Should be on every managerýs desk and well worn!.......1998-10-14
There's an old song that has a line: It's so easy to fall in love... it's so easy, it's so easy. It's a shame that managers around the world seem incapable of singing: It's so easy to say thank you; it's so easy to say, good job! It's so easy, it's so easy.
Pat and Joan hit the soft spot again. In our false Puritanical and strong silent type corporate culture, the hardest thing to get them to do sincerely, should be the easiest and natural thing to do. So read this book and be reminded that good leadership and management begins with the basics of civil and human behavior. And if you still find it doesn't fit well with your strong silent type suit you wear at work, try the Navy and Marine short but emotion filled way of saying thanks and good job: Well done, Jones, well done... keep it up! See that's not so hard is it? You would even smile if your boss said that to you wouldn't you? Ned Hamson

Book Description
This textbook develops the foundations of Lewis- and Pauling-like localized structural and hybridization concepts to present the first modernized overview of chemical valency and bonding theory. Directly based on current computational technology, it serves as both a general textbook exposition of modern Lewis, hybridization, and resonance concepts and a comprehensive compilation of NBO-based bonding descriptors--for prototype molecular and supramolecular organic and inorganic species.
Download Description
This graduate level text presents the first comprehensive overview of modern chemical valency and bonding theory, written by internationally recognised experts in the field. The authors build on the foundation of Lewis- and Pauling-like localized structural and hybridization concepts to present a book that is directly based on current ab-initio computational technology. The presentation is highly visual and intuitive throughout, based on the recognizable and transferable graphical forms of natural bond orbitals (NBOs) and their spatial overlaps in the molecular environment. The book shows applications to a broad range of molecular and supramolecular species of organic, inorganic and bioorganic interest. Hundreds of orbital illustrations help to convey the essence of modern NBO concepts for those with no extensive background in the mathematical machinery of the Schr

Is it Madness or Reality?.......2007-07-29
I find "The Madwoman of Chaillot" contemporary and current. It describes the disillusions, falsness and corruption in a political world gone astray. Anyone who wants to understand the current situation of any government whether a democracy, a republic, a dictatorship, King, Czar, or madmen will identify with this play, and strive to undue the injustices that prevail throughout our modern 21st century world.
The Madwoman and The Oil Drillers.......2000-06-29
The Madwoman of Chaillot ( as portrayed by Katharine Hepburn in the movie version) is a two-act play about the destruction of the forces of evil by one older, senile woman - the Madwoman. A group of money-hungry corporation presidents team up with prospectors who claim to have found oil right beneath the streets of Paris's Chaillot suburb, and the Madwoman rallies her bohemian friends and neighbors to stop them from destroying the city. The play is very dramatic and also humorous in parts; it seems primarily a fantasy, but has several fantastic parts for female characters, among them the Madwoman and her group of eccentric, delightful fellow Madwomen. I recommend it highly to any group of adolescent/young adult actors who are looking for a challenge.
Although It's Been Many Years.......2000-03-03
I believe this is the play in which the role "Countess" appears...and if it is, I would like to write my opinion based upon performing in the role of Countess many years ago. This play is hysterical, entertaining, and a joy for those performing it as well as those seeing or reading it. It involves eccentric, rich old ladies who try to carry on with afternoon tea despite thier various quirky personalities(mainly quirky due to senility and the hallucinations that accompany it). A great play for adolescent through adult actors. It is worth having on your shelf if you instruct drama in any way.
Customer Reviews:
A terrible translation of a beautiful play.......2005-02-01
Friedrich Dürrenmatt's play Der Besuch der alten Dame is a milestone in German language drama, one of the most significant pieces in the twentieth century. The Maurice Valency "adaptation" is barely a suggestion of the original. Obviously some things must be lost in the translation, but Valency makes unjustifiable decisions: entire scenes are excised, a great deal of dialogue has been trimmed from scenes that didn't need it, Valency has written his own scenes in, he's moved things around, and then on top of all of that he changed the main character's name for reasons that elude me. If at all possible, find another translation of this play, whether you intend to perform it or just to read it; the Valency version is a sin.

Book Description
This book presents a wealth of information on some of the most interesting languages in the world, most of them little-known in the linguistics literature. The distinguished team of authors have each examined "valency-changing mechanisms" (phenomena including passives and causatives) in languages ranging from Amazonian Tariana to Alaskan Eskimo, from Australian Ngan'gityemerri to Tsez from the Caucasus. R. M. W. Dixon has also contributed a comprehensive chapter on causatives across the languages of the world. The volume will provide valuable insights both for formal theoreticians and for linguistic typologists.

"I'll show you the life of the mind!".......1998-07-07
Four short plays, seductive and fickle water nymphs with the visage of Audrey Hepburn, love that can animate sculpted statues, madwomen and the ghosts of those who've loved them... a universal celebration and recognition of small sacrifices and gestures hidden within grand tales of mythic proportions. Keep this book close for the rest of your eventful life.

Book Description
I am just one of those rare and probably defective people who really enjoy the company of teenagers.
Brendan Halpin’s It Takes a Worried Man—a memoir of how he and his family dealt with his wife’s battle against breast cancer—was praised for its can-dor, raw humor, and riveting voice. Halpin now turns his unique talent to an unforgettable account of the pursuit of his true calling: teaching.
Losing My Faculties follows Halpin through teaching jobs in an economically depressed white ethnic town, a middle-class suburb, a last-chance truancy prevention program in the inner city, and an ambitious college-prep urban charter school. In the same cuttingly observant voice that marked It Takes a Worried Man, Halpin tells us what it really means to be a teacher—the ups and downs in the classroom, the battles with administrators and colleagues, and the joy of doing a job that matters. Not the tale of a hero who changes his troubled students’ lives in one year, Losing My Faculties is, rather, the story of an all-too-fallible teacher who persists in spite of the frustrations that have driven so many others from the profession. After nine years of teaching, Halpin finds his idealism in shreds but his sense of humor and love for his work blessedly intact.
From the Hardcover edition.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Education.......2007-07-31
Books about urban education tend to be self serving, dishonest, terribly sad, and/or boring. This autobiographical account of a teacher in the schools of urban and suburban Boston is none of those things. It honestly provides readers with a first-person account of how tough it is and how glorious it can be to teach kids -- even kids who often don't want to learn.
This is no sugar-coated, feel-good account. Halpin is honest about the warts he sees -- especially his own. Teachers, students, administrators, teachers unions, politicians, and surely educational consultants all take their fair share of skewering. But it strikes me as the brutally honest not the gratuitous type. In the process of shining a clear light and a wonderfully penetrating lens on schools and on himself, Brendan Halpin takes us on a surprisingly amusing, poignant, and insightful ride.
I am a union representative for teachers. As such I can say that teachers (at least open minded ones) will find this book delightful and touching, laughing as they nod their heads in agreement with so much of what Halpin writes.
School sucks.......2006-02-20
Reading Faculties I was reminded of something Kurt Vonnegut said of Hunter Thompson: " I am told that {Thompson}...is being eaten alive by tinhorn politicians. The disease is fatal. There is no know cure...let all those who feel that Americans can be easily led to beauty as to ugliness, to truth as to public relations, to joy as to bitterness, be said to be suffering from Hunter Thompson's disease."
Brendan Halpin spent {at least} eight years in the Massachusetts public schools believing in the salutary effects of education on the teenage soul. That alone qualifies him as a Hunter Thompson disease carrier.
As a teacher I found Faculties a gripping read, filled with all the familiar feelings (sleepless weekday nights; fury at lazy, self-important administrators; bewilderment at colleagues more interested in real estate than real teaching). I rooted for the author to find the Holy Grail, the school with good people doing good.
Halpin tells the story as if he'd channeled one of the teenagers in his Boston-area classrooms. It's full of profanity and slang and long parenthetical asides that almost sidetrack the narrative. But he, mostly, pulls it off. Enough that anyone interested in being the fly-on-the-wall of a high school will find this account compelling.
Ironically Halpin cites the very characteristic that undermines the power of his story: "The {kids} papers kind of suck...mostly because they are long on opinions and short on evidence," he laments early in his career. We meet myriad characters in Halpin's world but very few, if any, are painted with enough detail for the reader to feel confident that they should share the author's {often-scathing} judgments. On almost every page I found myself talking to the print, saying, "Yeah, I know that jerk. We have one of those in my school, too!" And yet, despite Halpin's repeated confessions of his own failings the reader still is left with a nagging feeling that some of his villains might really be heroes (and Halpin occasionally switches sides himself, condemning people in later pages who were allies in earlier episodes).
For anyone who likes this kind of thing I'd recommend four other books of similar theme:
Shut up and Let the Lady Teach by a Newsday reporter, Emily Sachar covers the New York City school woes with lots more detail. True Notebooks by Mark Salzman spells out one year in a Los Angeles school by a teacher of writing. Another Planet is writer Elinor Burkett's year in a Minnesota suburban high school. None of these has Halpin's energy but each has the advantage of greater specificity.
And if you are looking for prescriptions for ameliorating the messes detailed in these books I'd tell you to read anything by John Taylor Gatto, John Holt or Frank Smith.
But don't hold your breath. Neither Halpin's book, nor the American secondary education system have, at present, a happy ending.
?.......2005-05-27
As a teacher, I read this book eagerly, hoping for some validation of the frustrations and joys that teaching entails. Here are some thoughts on this read:
a. The author takes you inside his mind, the writing is raw- making it an easy and enjoyable read, while getting some deep points about the state of education across.
b. Why the need for at least one foul word on each page? (if not more!) This point turned me off completely, as I do not need every single four letter word to be resounded every few paragraphs!
c. The lows are focused on a lot more than the highs- I know this is reality, but this guy is a teacher???
Chicken soup for the teacher's soul............2005-02-26
While Halpin's candid account of teaching in the public schools of Massachusetts is by no means all warm and fuzzy, it is a poignant testament of one man's love of teaching. As a public school music teacher (and a first year at that), I found constant affirmation in reading Halpin's stories of the rollercoaster ride of American education. From student teaching dramas and locating a first job to dealing with administrative conflicts and parents, this book covers it all...and in a very informal, interior monologue kind of way. It is this journal-esque way of writing that really drives the story. I was pleased that despite Halpin's english teacher credentials, he was more than comfortable to write the book in a more relaxed style, complete with slang, colloquialisms, and less-than-perfect grammar. The book, despite its non-heroic ending, has inspired me and my teaching.
interesting...........2004-10-01
This is an interesting book.... I have two points to make about it.
1. I thought it would be about a teacher who had some tough trials but came through them, inspiring, yada yada yada. It's not. I think maybe Mr. Halpin wanted it to be about that but to me, it has a different point. I see this as an accurate memoir of how many teachers become so negative and jaded. Mr. Halpin starts out the story with his first teaching experience. He recounts how enthusiastic he was and how dismayed he was by the other teachers' negativity and lack of enthusiasm. He talks about other teachers who gossip and don't care about the kids in the same way he does. As the years progress, he goes to different schools, meets with changing and unsupportive administration, etc. By the end, he seems as old and crotchety and negative as all the rest. But, he doesn't think he's being negative. By the end of the book, he really annoys me. That being said, this is not necessarily a bad thing because its honest and real. I enjoyed understanding why some teachers become the way they do.
Second point: Considering Mr. Halpin is an English teacher, he has the worst grammar and sentence structure I have ever seen in a book. I'm not sure how he ever taught English. His sentences run on, are filled with tangents, he doesn't focus on one topic in his paragraphs. I don't know whether he did this on purpose or not. However, it makes the book interesting. It's like you are inside his brain and hearing everything exactly how he thinks it, unedited.
This book is interesting because it is honest and raw. It doesn't really have much of an ending and sometimes Mr. Halpin grates on you, but it is truthful and real and gives you a good look into his life.
