I've been looking at a lot of different earthworm related books, and this one is well written, without a lot of fluff. These folks have been raising worms for nearly 50 years, and they've put some good guidelines down in a small book with good illustrations. It's a bargain!

      Book Description

The book exposes contemporary analytical and semianalytical techniques for solving typical celestial mechanics problems by computer. It presents new algorithms of perturbation theory and helps to develop, on the basis of some general computer algebra systems, specialized software enabling one to construct analytical theories of the motion of celestial objects. Particular attention is paid to applying the elliptic functions expansions to economize on the number of terms in the resulting series in problems with large values of parameters. Even problems considered as intractable may now be treated efficiently.
The author addresses not only astronomers but also amateurs interested in orbit calculations for celestial objects or satellites.

          Description:
Organizations are making substantial investments in information security to reduce the risk presented by vulnerabilities in their information technology (IT) infrastructure. However, each security technology only addresses specific vulnerabilities and potentially creates additional vulnerabilities. The objective of this research is to present and evaluate a Genetic Algorithm (GA)-based approach enabling organizations to choose the minimal-cost security profile providing the maximal vulnerability coverage. This approach is compared to an enumerative approach for a given test set. The GA-based approach provides favorable results, eventually leading to improved tools for supporting information security investment decisions.

                  Description:
Teece's complementary asset framework explains how firms use assets to appropriate the benefits of innovation. This paper extends Teece's framework to show how firms also use complementary assets to disappropriate the risks of technical change. Based on case studies of the commercialisation of genetic testing in the UK the paper shows how firms can strategically alter the social distribution of risk to their advantage by managing distinct types of risk using different institutions with diverse risk management capabilities. We highlight the specific risk management capabilities of the state that are not available to either firms or markets, and their role in supporting technical change. Implications for policy and the academic understanding of technical change are discussed.

                      Book Description

MARINE CORPS BOOT relives, through naive but likable Chris Madeira, Parris Island's look-the-other-way training during the Korean Crisis of 1954. At PI, Chris faces not only the unchecked harassments of that notorious Carolina hell-hole, but also the double jeopardy of a home-town rival as Commanding Officer.

Highlighting his darkest days are letters from "Irish" Morgenstern and his kinship with Leatherneck Leon, a kinky loner destined for global in-famy. (Try guessing his identity.)

Ending the story--and nearly Chris's life--is the midnight maneuver of an out-of-control DI.

Serio-comically, this novel remains the only full-length treatment ever published on "politically incorrect" boot-camp discipline.

3 out of 5 stars Parris Island Re-visited.......2007-01-16

This book brings back several memories of my boot camp days at Parris Island. It has some interesting reading. It does include most of the training we went through but it has more liberties included that we did not have privilege to. There is a lot of truth to it but I would have to call it fiction reading. I can't believe the training had changed that much. We didn't go to the PX or movies or snack bar during training. I'm sure anyone who went through Parris Island will enjoy reading it.

                      5 out of 5 stars Once A Marine Always A Marine.......2003-12-11

As famous ex-Marine Art Art Buchwald stated: "You cannot make up anything anymore. The world itself is a satire. All you are doing is recording it." Indeed, Parris Island was (is?) a hell-hole, and author Chris Madeira, Jr. records that fact. Other books by authors like Zell Miller focus on how marines gain human values at boot camp, but Madeira records the reality of the follies that have occured there. I think this is a "must read" for any leatherneck, parents whose children are contemplating a tour of duty in the Corps, and for the rest of us to develop an understanding of what being a U. S. Marine really means.

                            Book Description

In 1838 James Brooke left England in search of adventure in the far-off lands of Southeast Asia. Armed with a dream of expelling the Dutch and establishing enlightened British rule in the region, he undertook missions for the Sultan of Brunei, pursuing pirate raiders and battling rebels. As a reward, he was offered Sarawak, a Malay territory in the northwest of the island of Borneo, inhabited by diverse tribes and cultures, notably the head-hunting Dayaks. The dynasty of the White Rajahs of Sarawak began in 1841, was shattered by the Japanese invasion in 1941 and ended in 1946 with Sarawak¹s annexation as a British Crown Colony. James, the charismatic founder; Charles, the astute administrator; and Vyner, the irresponsible hedonist, are the principal players in this incredible family saga. This richly illustrated book relives the heady mix of exoticism, violence, courage and romance of this extraordinary adventure. Highlights: Intriguing story of one family¹s rule of Sarawak, Well-documented, Numerous pictures and illustrations to accompany the story.

                            Book Description

Sir James Brooke's curious career began in 1841, when he was caught up in a war in Brunei. He was an opportunist who, with the Sultan's backing, made war on the Dayaks tribespeople and as a result found himself ruling over Sarawak—a kingdom the size of England. How he achieved it is a romantic, sometimes horrifying story. This historical biography recalls the best and the worst of the British Imperial character.

4 out of 5 stars A well written retelling of a legendary story........2004-08-24

The book tells the life story of Sir James Brooke, the British-born rajah of the kingdom of Sarawak in Northern Borneo (today part of Malaysia). Brooke's life has been told many times and this retelling does not shed much new light to it, except for the unabashed recognition of the fact that, by all indications, Brooke was homosexual (probably not latent), and especially attracted to handsome young men. Otherwise, it's an easy-to-read, well written retelling of a story which, at a closer look, actually proves a lot less interesting and adventureous than you'd think if you only know the bare skeleton of it.

This book, first published in 1909, is the offical history of Sarawak (which now forms a part of Malaysia) during the rule of Rajah James and Rajah Charles. Although, as Nicholas Tarling emphasizes in his introduction, professional historians have reinterpreted Sarawak's history more
completely in recent years, this classic work not only captures the spirit of the times, it allows the facts to speak for themselves.

4 out of 5 stars The Strange Story of Sarawak.......2005-05-06

This is a nicely done bio of the three white rulers of Sarawak that will appeal to those who enjoy biographies and history. J.B. Brooke, the first white rajah, is a character that today could only exist in a work of fiction. At the time, however, he was typical of a small group of British adventurers and explorers who sought out intrigue in the remote corners of the earth. Unfortunately, since the book covers the lives of all three white rajahs (they ruled altogether for almost exactly 100 years), it lack's sufficient detail of the lives of each of its three subjects. But overall: well-done and well-written.

4 out of 5 stars Concise and informative.......2004-11-19

Robert Payne has produce a short history of the Broke dinasty in Sarawak (in todays Malaysian part of Borneo). The book in a concise and complete manner narrates the events that took place since James Broke first set his feet in the island of Borneo in the mid-XIX until the territory joined the Malaysian Federation after World War II.

The story is fascinating enough and Payne simply states general facts in quite a neutral manner. Maybe the book lacks some footnotes and references but is well written and clear. A few photos (not as many as it would be desired) complete the text
