A "Must Have" for Breeders.......2007-03-17

This book is a "must have" for breeding farms, whether you are just starting out or a veteran breeding farm manager. It is an excellent reference book, easy to read, lots of pictures and great practical advice from setting up a breeding farm to handling a foal.

Must have book for breeders.......2003-03-06

My friend gave me this book about 10 years ago. I had hoped that there was a newer edition out. I think every breeder should have this book on hand. It tells you everything you need to know about what to do if there is a problem with foaling. Easy to understand drawings of foal's positions and details about what to do if there is a problem. This could be a life saver if you ever have a problem. You don't have time to read and try to figure out what they are talking about. The pictures say it all and tell you how to reposition the foal and when to get the vet to do it. Many helpful feeding information charts on hays and grains, what size to expect your horse to grow up to be, lots of information of potential diseases, how to handle your new foal, feeding your nursing mare. Etc. Well worth the money.

This is an excellent source of information for breeding horses. It gives terrific information on stallion and broodmare management. It also gives information on diseases affecting the reproductive system in both mares and stallions. The foal development part of the book is also very informative and interesting. It discusses the different stages of foal development from the time of conception to the time of birth.

Very Paractical........1999-11-30

This is a great book that deals with all the aspects of owning/operating a breeding farm. There is more to professional breeding than having a few ponies in the backyard. I especially found the cost analyses and tax examples very useful.

This is the best book I've ever read on Equine Reproduction........1999-07-15

I've read many books regarding Equine Reproduction and this is by far the best book I have encountered. It covers all aspects of breeding and foaling. My copy was given to me by my mentor, to her by her mentor, and to her by her mentor. I have loaned it to many friends expecting a foal and make all of my foaling attendants read the foaling section. This book is a must for anyone who is contemplating breeding their mare or just curious about the miracle of life. Buy the book and you'll enjoy it as much as I have.

A great introduction.......2000-05-18

This is a nice introduction to the field of star and planet formation. It is a bit more instructive than the similar _Protostars and Planets IV_, meaning that many of the chapters are genuinely useful at the graduate student level. However not all of the chapters are written equally well. Some contain breath-takingly comprehensive looks at their subject matters (e.g., the chapters by Chris McKee, Telemachios Mouschovios, Rafael Bachiller), while others could have been fleshed out a little more. All in all though, the book is a great companion to the larger (but same priced) _PP IV_. Although it was published first and so is slightly more dated and it is not as comprehensive as that other volume, I would recommend this over _PP IV_ for students in astrophysics on a limited budget--mainly because of its readability for second year and above graduate students.

Best Book in Classical Analytical Chemistry........2000-06-04

It is somewhat difficult to understand this book at the first time. However, higher researcher will be satisfied with this incisive and clear explantion of classical analytical chemistry. Although this book was written about 40 years ago(for 1st edition), still it shows brilliant idea for the real experiment.

In Human Nature and Organization Theory, Sigmund Wagner-Tsukamoto challenges the conventional wisdom that (organizational) economics is an amoral and empirically incorrect science. He treads new ground regarding the behavioral portrayal of human nature in organization theory.

The book focuses on the works of Taylor, Simon and Williamson, reconstructing methods and variables of their organization theories in non-behavioral, institutional economic terms. Implications for institutional economic theory building and practical intervention are outlined. The book suggests that the image of human nature in organizational economics has to be deduced from theoretical and practical outcomes of economic analysis rather than from methods of economic analysis. If this is considered, organizational economics can make considerable moral claims, since it can generate socially desirable interaction outcomes even in the face of pluralism.

E. Tayloe Wise served in Vietnam from May 1969 through April 1970. During those 11 months, he wrote an estimated 750-800 letters home. This memoir is based on those letters, which recounted the details of his experiences and also served as an outlet where he could express the terror, tedium and even boredom of his daily life while in Vietnam. It tells the story of the Vietnam War as this foot soldier viewed it from the jungle, as both a rifleman and a combat medic who was forced to learn his medical skills under fire, and who later became a personal waiter in the private mess hall of Major General E.B. Roberts, the Commanding General of the 1st Cavalry Division (Air Mobile).

The story begins with a record of Wise's military history, his training as an infantryman in Leesville, Louisiana and his arrival in Vietnam on May 2, 1969. Chapter two details his first experience under enemy fire on May 11, when suicide squads penetrated their perimeter with the purpose of inflicting the maximum amount of damage with disregard to even the attackers' own lives. Chapters five and six recount the August 1969 battle of LZ Becky, a landing zone that was constructed just south of the Cambodian border and was destroyed only four weeks later. Chapter seven relates Wise's experiences after receiving a job as a waiter in the Commander General's mess hall. On April 9, 1970, his service ended and he headed home. The book contains diagrams of several battles and the author's personal photographs taken while he was in the jungle and in the rear echelon area of Phuoc Vinh.

A Year of Living Dangerously.......2004-10-12

Tayloe Wise's account of his year of living dangerously, 1969-1970, during the Vietnam War is a worthwhile addition to the genre of personal war stories. He was foot soldier, combat medic and later personal waiter for a Commanding General. Because this book is based on the letters Mr. Wise wrote to family and friends the narrative retains an immediacy not dulled by the passage of 30 years. The book is interesting from many perspectives: war history, social history and coming-of-age narrative. Eleven Bravo is one "grunt's" very personal account of the Vietnam war when a great nation became party to a great and tragic folly.

War from Inside the Tents of Grunts & Generals.......2004-09-21

If you want to appreciate the extremes of war as seen through the eyes of a decorated grunt on the battlefield who then goes on to become a witness to the egregious luxury experienced by the commanders in the rear, this book tells it like it is. Most grunts don't see the lavish lifestyles of their commanders nor do most people understand the horrors of war. In this book, both are present and accounted for.

I know several Viet Nam Vets. None of them want to talk about it. They tell stories when they're in the mood, but those are always impersonal. Fragging incidents, hot landing zones (LZ's) and R&R capers top the list. Their stories are always about someone or something else, not themselves. Eleven Bravo is different.

This is a first-hand account of one grunt's experiences as captured daily through letters sent back home to his parents and friends, preserved for this book that took over thrity years to write. The language seemed at times, repetitive, and there are times while reading it my inclination was to skip some of the material. Then I realized that the repetition is part of the story. War and its daily struggles are all about repetition and once I understood that it was an integral part of the experience, I began to appreciate it. It is honest and haunting. The story of a young man who could have been a commanding general in another era, toting a rifle in the infantry and learning too well the vicissitudes of war; and as if to taunt him with that knowledge of his lineage, also showing him the extremes between grunt and commander. Must read if you want to feel what war is like at the extremes.

Honest and Poignant.......2004-08-03

I am only halfway through this book but feel compelled to review it for those who are uncertain whether they should read it or not. Tayloe Wise has done us all a favor by giving us a brutally honest account of what the Vietnam war was really like for a combat soldier. War movies have left me numb and still unclear on what the day to days were really like. Perhaps it is Wise's accessible writing style, breath-taking detailed accounts, and refreshing honesty: Eleven Bravo has opened my eyes and made me rethink my assumptions on war, and given me a taste of the realities of the Vietnam war. I feel honored and privileged to be reading Tayloe Wise's memoir and even more so to know him. Good work, Professor.

A wonderful book written by an author who clearly understands human frailty, both mental and physical, and the fundamental difference a caring physician can make in the lives of those he touches. I was so impressed at the simple eloquence of the stories. Each one is affecting without any artifice and each character is hard to part with as the book progresses. A highly recommended and positive exploration of the human condition.

He and his wife homesteaded at the northern edge of Yellowstone National Park in the 1890s and eventually established a guest ranch there that reached its heyday in the 1920s. This book tells how the first dude ranch in Montana got its start in the 1920's and the people behind its beginning. It includes happenings with some of the "dudes" and is illustrated with pictures of ranch hands and guests. Read what happened when the wranglers decided to stage a holdup on one of the trail rides. My husband received this book for his birthday, but my son who spent his summer as a wrangler at a dude ranch in Colorado, was the first to read it.

"Stabilizing and Integrating the Balkans" is an extremely insightful and timely analysis of how-in a globalized world-national governments and international organizations can form a network to deal with regional conflicts. As the foundation for his analysis, Paul Welfens describes the conditions in the Balkans at the end of the Kosovo War and analyzes how the international community has tried to create the conditions for sustained economic growth and political stability in the region. In addition to providing relevant and detailed economic, political, and institutional information, Paul Welfens looks critically at the key actors of the Stability Pact. The book shows that the approached used in the Balkans could become a model for future cooperation among national governments and international organizations to deal with similar political and economic challenges in other parts of the world. Paul Welfens, however, also identifies inconsistencies that should be overcome. Areas of particular concern are the future transatlantic relationship between Europe and the U.S. as well as the enlargement of the European Union.

While the book focuses on the Balkans in the aftermath of the Kosovo crisis, the reader cannot avoid asking the question of how the experiences from the Balkans could also be used to overcome political instability and poor economic conditions in other conflict regions of the world. For example, in the aftermath of the events in the U.S. on September 11, the international community is confronted with a volatile situation in Afghanistan and the surrounding countries such as Pakistan and India. In many respect, a network approach similar to that in the Balkans will be required to stabilize the conditions in that part of the world as well.

The book is an extremely valuable source for anybody interested in the Balkans. However, it appeals to an even larger audience and is very useful for economic policymakers as well as political scientists. It is highly recommended.
