    Book Description

Teaching Common Sense: Seven Simple Principles For Nurturing Those Around You and Reaping The Harvest of Your Life is based upon the following premises: we are all born with a unique, special life to live; we learn more each day how to best fulfill that purpose; we are all connected, therefore we learn and grow toward that fulfillment together, or not, it is our choice; since we are continually learning from and through one another, we are all teachers, regardless of our profession; and we will all achieve a higher level of fulfillment together in this life if we focus on being the best teachers we can be. Teaching Common Sense leads readers on a journey to this awareness facilitated by the true stories of the author's great teachers who embodied the seven principles: Be Inspiring; Be Committed to a Vision; Give Unconditional Love and Acceptance; Make a Connection; Be Structured and Organized; Be a Good Coach and Lifelong Learner; and Believe in Others. Teaching Common Sense shows readers how simple it is to transform themselves into great teachers, and in so doing, transform their own lives. Webster describes common sense as sound and prudent judgment derived from every day experiences. In like manner, the author's unique brand of down to earth common sense wisdom combines physiology, spirituality, and psychology with experiences common to us all to provide a simple, yet compelling, start-tomorrow guide to living the life readers were born to live.

5 out of 5 stars Wow, Worth the effort!.......2005-08-15

I am Chairman and CEO of a US company. I am also a voracious reader. I must admit to being really surprised. Pleasantly so! Anybody with the guts to suggest they are going to teach me common sense after all my years ...or at least teach me how to apply common sense...well, she must have known my grandfather!

The acknowledgements scared me at first. It sounded like it was going to be a very academic read, though it has a "Common Sense" title. Don't worry, it is not. But you will learn that the author certainly built her common sense on many well-grounded theories and brilliant scientists that came before her. Without giving anything away I would mention that the simple pie chart at the end of that section thankfully renewed my expectation of a straight-forward and interesting experience.

This book had some of the "ahas" that I got from reading Echart Tolle, but in the end it made me work harder than Tolle did, and I certainly learned more about myself than I ever expected. It was actually a great follow-up to "The Power of Now" for me in fact. The author may not have Tolle's reputation, but she has the same common sense! (I suppose it is not the author's fault that Oprah hasn't discovered her yet.) Early in the book I saw that she intended to take on the challenge of explaining to me why we humans are here. I thought: "Now that's a very ambitious task for an author I've never read." She actually did it, and did it well. And her perspective doesn't require you to be a Christian, Muslim, Creationist, Darwninist, or any other label. You just have to be human.

This should be a 'must read' for all teachers or would-be teachers. My advice to other possible readers would be this. If you are willing to apply yourself by reading and working through the personal exercises provided in the book - (don't worry they are not strenuous)- you will be amazed at what you discover about yourself. I was. And I am still learning ...and teaching...which was, by the way, the point. Read it!

"Good Morning--But the Nightmares Never End" is one combat soldier's experience as an infantryman on the front lines of World War II Europe, as a prisoner of war in a German work camp, then as a prisoner of another sort in a Russian detention camp and as a displaced, disillusioned veteran after the war's end. This is author Charlie Dukes' own story of his perilous, horrific and heart-breaking journey, but one that was also, ultimately, triumphant.

                        By Charlie Dukes
                        Review written by Shane

Giving in is easy, but surviving isn't. Good Morning: But the Nightmares Never End written by Charlie Dukes is Duke's story of his seven-month nightmarish experience as a American POW who must survive each day's starvation with the help of his Canadian friends in a German POW camp. While being held against his will in an oppressive and rank smelling prison camp, Dukes begins to worry if he will ever be able to overcome his impending death and his nightmares worsen when he overhears a rumor that he and many other fragile-spirited and feeble prisoners are about to be moved to a death camp in Germany. With the help of the Canadians, other friendly and courageous prisoners, and the allied Russian prisoners, Dukes survives his life-threatening experience as a prisoner and makes it to freedom. Dukes amazing novel comes to life with pictures of him in uniform and the actual telegrams sent to his parents telling them that he had been captured. But, even after his survival, will the nightmares ever end? If you' re looking for a heroic book about one Central Illinois man's experience as a POW in World War II, find a copy of Good Morning: But the Nightmares Never End by Charlie Dukes.

This book shows the reader the horrors of prison camps and the joy of coming home. Read it and be grateful for men like Mr. Dukes who never gave up.

5 out of 5 stars Compeling, hard hitting, gut wrenching, can't put down book!.......1999-09-29

The nightmares have ended for Charlie, and I am so glad they have. I grew up knowing Charlie and had heard only pieces on this story. Until I read the book, I had no idea the terrible hurt this or any war really inflicts on a person. I always thought how great is must have been just to survive and return home as I did. Many of my high school friends did return from Vietnam, the other war, but they just were not the same. After reading the book, I now understand. This is a must read for any veteran. It is well written and clearly good medicine.

This book should be required reading for every high school kid in the country. Maybe they would understand and care about the freedom they have because someone else paid a terrible price and still survived.

This book gave the horrors of war and soldiering a human face and name. It was a compelling read that told of one man's struggle to stay alive, and then to return to society.

5 out of 5 stars could not put this book down. feel need to meet this man........1998-01-31

Good Morning--but the nightmares never end, is a gripping story of one man's escapes from dangers of war and capitivity and his eventual return to society. This book is as necessary to read as it is necessary to acknowledge the infamous Nazi death camps. On reflection we must acknowledge that the forces of hate, problems of class and national resentments, as well a basic human nature are always with us. This book helps with that perspective.

                        Book Description

This book provides a unique presentation of Simone WeilÆs life, work, and her contributions to feminist thought. Long before postmodern or deconstructionist ideas became current, Weil was concerned with recognizing the absence of consistency and the continual presence of reversals and contradictions in life. The struggle to clarify her "reading" of reality and her perceptions of meaning was an ongoing one and she challenged contemporary views on complex issues such as human nature, good and evil, divinity, and truth. In this introduction to Simone WeilÆs ideas, and the political and intellectual circumstances of her work, the authors make WeilÆs complex and at times elusive ideas accessible to readers. They offer their own interpretation of her work and delineate how WeilÆs ideas evolved, while providing compelling excerpts from WeilÆs writings to let her speak for herself. Her work offers a voice for those segments of society that are generally underrepresented, misrepresented, or totally silent in conventional historical and philosophical writings. Simone Weil will be valuable reading for students and academics involved in womenÆs studies, philosophy, psychology, political and social theory, and for anyone with an interest in the life and work of this passionate individual.

This slim volume on Weil is unlike all others (and there are many others) I've read. Frost and Bell-Metereau have obviously read Weil quite extensively and have a good working knowledge of the important secondary literature (but in English only it seems). Their selection of quotes are quite a propos, too. What I found odd about the book was its apologist tone. The authors seem overly eager to "justify" Weil's views, especially her spiritual/religious views, to what they evidently sense may be a hostile post-modern audience. Hence one gets the impression that Simone Weil needs somehow to be "rehabilitated" to reach the now-sophisticated post-Y2K reader. I'm not sure that's necessary (or appropriate), but their attempt is interesting nonetheless for the light it sheds on just how far foundational philosophical and metaphysical discourse has evidently fallen into embarrassing disrepute these days. Perhaps theirs is the only way to present such thinkers as Weil to the cyber generation. But I hope not.

John Abt lived one of the more interesting lives of the twentieth century. As a secret member of the Communist Party and espionage agent, he could tell a whale of a story. As someone who watched the rise and fall of American and Soviet Communism, he might reflect on what happened, and why a movement that once looked so succesful fell apart. If nothing else, he might at least have told some interesting lies.

                          He doesn't.

Instead, he spends over three hundred pages carefully avoiding the main themes of his life: what he really did as a Communist, why he felt it necessary to conceal his membership in the Party, what it was like inside the Party, and what, if anything, he learned from it all.

The advanced student of communist propoganda will learn a few things, and those who know of Abt from Elizabeth Bentley's and Whittaker Chambers memoirs, the Venona decrypts, and other sources can glean a few interesting facts here and there, but mostly, Abt says nothing about himself, his life, his movement, or his century, and takes three hundred pages to avoid saying it.

A wasted life, and a waste of money. Don't buy it.

John Abt's autobiography follows the distinctive pattern set over the years by similar Communist dissimulations in print. That is, his smooth lies are very much like those of Ring Lardner, Jr., Lillian Hellman, Alger Hiss, Dorothy Healey, Vladimir Posner, Armand Hammer, Emmanuel Fried, and a devil's host of others. Abt's life 'explained' is an exercise in 1) that which he does NOT explain, 2) attempts at outright Soviet Agitprop, and 3) a profound anti-Americanism. Abt was one of a rather large number of 'secret' party members. In his case, secret for 50 years (he 'came out' at his 80th birthday party). Truly a man who lived a lie all of his adult life. Along with "fellow travelers" ("Sputniki", from the Russian of Trotsky's political term), the Communist movement set out to destroy America by "any means possible". Then to deliver it to the Lenin-Stalin-Khrushchev-Bresznev regime - the largest mass murder machine in human history. (See: "The Black Book of Communism", elsewhere on Amazon.Com). Abt mumbles on about the "Marxist study group" he belonged to in the1930's, which included Alger Hiss and several other Soviet espionage agents. After the Whittaker Chambers defection affair, Abt, not himself a 'source', became eventually its head, turning the ring over to the NKVD (in '44), later called the "Perlo Group". The group's members, were denounced by Perlo's ex-wife, who named Abt as an espionage agent. (see the "Venona" transcripts elsewhere on Amazon.Com for Abt as a spy) Abt mentions many other communists and fellow travelers (carefully, sure that they had been already identified elsewhere) in this autobiography completed after his death in '91. All these should be of interest to anyone interested in friends of Stalin, from Pete Seeger to Studs Terkel. He is very obtuse about other friends, as is his co-author Michael Myerson about himself, a guy who writes for 'various publications', ' organizes political campaigns', 'teaches in NYC', had been "a National Director of a Peace Organization" (all unamed), ie., Myerson is a cypher. But Abt's agitprop work must be read with great care. Do keep in mind that the CPUSA (and Abt) was wholly controlled by the Soviet butchers from Moscow. Abt's legal career is a sort of ultimate dark lawyer joke. Published by the U. of Illinois (what could they have been thinking?). Minus 5 stars and therefore recommended for that very reason.

It is sad that Sidney Huntingtons book had to be sooo different than his brother's. Jimmy Huntington's book was so much more down to earth.

I loved this book. I am not much on reviews, but I had to speak my mind on this one. Sidney Huntington was born to an English-Scot father and a Athapaskan Indian mother in 1915 in Hughes Alaska. This is on the Koyukuk River in central Alaska. These were hard times, but these were very hardy people. The likes of which you do not see anymore. This story is of Sidney's life growing up there as told to Jim Rearden, who did a great job in telling this story. It is filled with adventure, heart ache, even death, but it is a great story. If you love adventure and Alaska this is the book for you. I highly recommed it. He is a truly great man..

                                          Book Description

This systematic analysis of the lessons learned at Mibanco-a microfinance bank in Peru designed to provide sophisticated banking services to poor and low-income households-provides an example for microfinance banks in Asia. Mibanco's successes, which managed to successfully blend aid to large segments of society that badly needed financial services with profitability-are potentially very instructive for an Asian private sector that has not yet been convinced of the profitability of microfinance banks. Among the lessons highlighted for microfinance banks and economic scholars is the usefulness of balancing rural investment and aid with delivering services to urban regions.
