Proceedings of the 17th International Seaweed Symposium: Cape Town 2001 (International Seaweed Symposium//Proceedings)
Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0198507429 |
Book Description
Seaweeds are members of intertidal and subtidal marine communities of organisms that have been subjects of intensive academic investigation over several decades. This work has contributed greatly to our understanding of community ecology, physiology, phylogeny and taxonomy. In addition to their academic significance, seaweeds and their products have enormous economic importance, generating in excess of US$3 billion per year in revenues. The International Seaweed Symposia are unique gatherings of industrialists and academics who are interested in sharing the findings of their research on marine macroalgae. The papers in these Proceedings represent the majority of communications presented at the 17th symposium held in Cape Town in 2001. The selection of articles covers technical aspects of the seaweed industry including extraction, processing, utilization and marketing of products. Of particular importance is the wide range of papers on seaweed farming. The Proceedings also includes several papers that deal with management of wild resources. In addition to industrial utilization of seaweeds and their products, current studies within the academic fields of taxonomy, ecology, phylogeny and physiology are included. Some of these papers seem remote from any industrial perspective, but, in fact, utilization of living organisms must depend on an adequate knowledge of biology. Among living organisms, seaweeds are a very under-studied group and this almost certainly acts as barrier to further industrial production.

The Clustered World : How We Live, What We Buy, and What It All Means About Who We Are

"Primary age group: 35-64... Median household income: $80,600... Median home value: $247,000... Predominant ideology: moderate Republican... Preferences: car phones, domestic wine, Land Rovers."If this sounds like you, then you're a part of what's known as the "Winner's Circle" cluster. If not, then you probably fall into one of 61 other lifestyle clusters with names such as "Urban Gold Coast," "Pools & Patios," "God's Country," "Golden Ponds," and "Shotguns & Pickups." In The Clustered World, demographic detective Michael Weiss draws on the work of market research firm Claritas and its PRIZM cluster system to render a richly detailed view of the many neighborhoods and demographic segments that make up the United States. According to Weiss, the image of America as a melting pot is simply inaccurate--think salad bar, instead. He writes, "For a nation that's always valued community, this breakup of the mass market into balkanized population segments is as momentous as the collapse of Communism.... Today, the country's new motto should be 'E pluribus pluriba': 'Out of many, many.'"
In addition to explaining the cluster concept, Weiss shows how marketers can put clusters to work to understand consumers better and sell everything from college educations to Dodge Caravans. Weiss also looks beyond the U.S. population to lifestyle clusters in Canada, France, Germany, Great Britain, South Africa, and Spain. Marketers and social observers will find this pointillist view incredibly useful and perhaps a little disturbing. The overriding truth behind The Clustered World is that, like it or not, "You are like your neighbors." And in case you're wondering what cluster you belong to, Weiss includes the URL for the Claritas Web site (yawyl.claritas.com), where you can enter your ZIP code to find out more about you and your neighbors. --Harry C. Edwards
Book Description
Michael Weiss expands on the geodemographics of The Clustering of America with this fascinating look at the sixty-two new lifestyle clusters that define Americans and their parallels in other countries. Today, the concept of clustering has spread throughout the world, revealing a global village made up of Long Distance Commuters in Japan and Chattering Classes in England who have more in common with Americans of the same cluster than they do with fellow countrymen. In The Clustered World, Weiss unveils how businesses and bureaucrats utilize clustering systems to influence our opinions and choices about bowling alleys in Florida, vending machines in Japan, and so forth.Customer Reviews:
Political Dynamic, Missing the Fuse or the Future.......2003-11-09
When Howard Dean used the shorthand expression "guys with confederate flags on their pick-ups" he was actually talking about what some call "NASCAR dads" and Michael Weiss calls the "Shotguns & Pickups" cluster (number 29 in his first book, number 43 in this advanced and improved edition).
Although others have written about the nine nations of North America (Joel Garreau), various "tribes" across the nation, and demographics in general, Michael Weiss stands head and shoulders above all of them in providing the definitive reference work that is also a form of novel about America.
With this book he also begins the process of extending his ideas to he world, showing how neighborhoods in 19 countries can be classified into 14 common lifestyles, the bottom three being Lower Income Elderly, Hardened Dependency, and Shack & Shanty....billions of people disenfranchised by amoral capitalism, whose desperate circumstances have not quite made themselves felt, yet, in America.
I have only one major criticism of this book, apart from its obsession with understanding people in order to sell to them--it fails to go the extra mile in understanding the future consequences of each group's economic status and consumer preferences. Although the book very specifically addresses the politics of each group (predominant ideology, 1996 presidential vote, key issues), it lacks the transformation analysis that might be helpful in understanding the political economy dynamics of each group, and what might be required to craft a new national progressive consensus that reduces materialism, corruption, waste, and restores democracy, community, and sustainable national security and prosperity.
Regardless of this modest shortfall, this is an extraordinary book, as was the first that I also own ("The Clustering of America"). Those interested in how these clusters are coalescing into a new progressive movement that is in-front, deep green, against big business, big money in politics, and amoral globalization, might wish to read Paul Ray and Sherry Ruth Anderson "The Cultural Creatives", Google for "Cultural Creatives" or visit culturalcreatives.org. America is changing. This book by Michael Weiss is a brilliant snapshot of where we are today.

Seductively interesting.......2000-10-21
This book explains what had happened to me: I had moved from one cluster's neighborhood into another. My address now suggested things about my income, lifestyle and assets that just weren't true.
The maps and prose in this book combine to provide a very interesting analysis of how wealth, values and lifestyle are dispersed in this country (and around the world). Clustering was first developed as a marketing tool, and it's undoubtedly a powerful one, but the book works as social commentary, as well. This book is one of the best case studies I've ever laid eyes on of how to make statistical analysis meaningful to the average reader.

Someone Has Blundered: Calamities of the British Army in the Victorian Age

The other side of those "British abroad" Movies........2000-09-10
The book covers six significant British military campaigns/wars from the dawn to the twilight of the Victorian era. Included are such well-known events as the Crimean War to considerably more obscure ones, such as the Zulu War of 1879. In all cases, Mr. Judd has done an excellent job of researching the subject matter and he provides many interesting insights. For example, the inital campaign of the Zulu War was lost in large part due to a shortage of screwdrivers. (You will have to read the book to learn the full story behind that!) There is also considerable discussion about the various efforts at reorganizing the British Army to rectify the errors of previous campaigns.
My only complaint with the book (and hence my 4 star rating) is that it is awfully short (189 pages) for such a rich subject. I would have liked to either have more information about the campaigns/wars already presented, or more such events could have been included. For example, the Riel Rebellion of 1885 would have been an excellent choice for inclusion in a work like this. The book is, however, a terrific introduction to a largely ignored subject area of military history. If this book interests you in the Boer Wars, I would recommend that you follow up with "The Boer War" by Thomas Pakenham.
