Book Description
Seaweeds are members of intertidal and subtidal marine communities of organisms that have been subjects of intensive academic investigation over several decades. This work has contributed greatly to our understanding of community ecology, physiology, phylogeny and taxonomy. In addition to their academic significance, seaweeds and their products have enormous economic importance, generating in excess of US$3 billion per year in revenues. The International Seaweed Symposia are unique gatherings of industrialists and academics who are interested in sharing the findings of their research on marine macroalgae. The papers in these Proceedings represent the majority of communications presented at the 17th symposium held in Cape Town in 2001. The selection of articles covers technical aspects of the seaweed industry including extraction, processing, utilization and marketing of products. Of particular importance is the wide range of papers on seaweed farming. The Proceedings also includes several papers that deal with management of wild resources. In addition to industrial utilization of seaweeds and their products, current studies within the academic fields of taxonomy, ecology, phylogeny and physiology are included. Some of these papers seem remote from any industrial perspective, but, in fact, utilization of living organisms must depend on an adequate knowledge of biology. Among living organisms, seaweeds are a very under-studied group and this almost certainly acts as barrier to further industrial production.

Best guide book on the market.......2000-12-08
I travelled to Syria and Jordan this November, armed with my first Footprint guide book, and I'm now a convert. It is especially good in giving out well written historical background and cultural titbids that just make the trip so much more rewarding. Lonely Planet and Rough Guides are sooooo shallow by comparison.

New Love Old Problems, Part 6.......2006-04-17
Momo has walked in on a strange scene. Misao is asleep on the break room's couch, and Kiley is kissing her on her face. This is all the proof she needs to know that she can never replace Misao in Kiley's heart so she heads home to find Sae there, and horror of horrors, finds herself confessing her misery to her former enemy. Momo actually derives some comfort from Sae, especially when she tells Kiley that he should make his feelings knows to Misao...give her the chance to weigh in on his attraction.
Well, once Misao turns him down he discovers his heart is heavy with grief and that he can't quite face Momo at work. So, without further adieu, Kiley embarks on a walking quest to sort out his feelings. Meanwhile, Sae has suggested to Toji that the convenience store Momo works at has an opening, and she finds working beside her former lover to be...challenging, especially when he starts making advances on her.
Well, one would hope now that Kiley has confessed his love to Misao and has been shot down that he will move on and be able to be with Momo... but now with Toji in the picture again that looks next to impossible. But this ambivalence makes Kiley all the more likeable... if he just accepted things without second guessing he would be a dullard. Toji I can't quite wrap my brain out, it's been a year since the break up and he wants back with Momo like nothing happened, like he didn't' break up badly with her because of Sae... it's all too much to process, but it's still very good. Quite a worthwhile read.

"Primary age group: 35-64... Median household income: $80,600... Median home value: $247,000... Predominant ideology: moderate Republican... Preferences: car phones, domestic wine, Land Rovers."
If this sounds like you, then you're a part of what's known as the "Winner's Circle" cluster. If not, then you probably fall into one of 61 other lifestyle clusters with names such as "Urban Gold Coast," "Pools & Patios," "God's Country," "Golden Ponds," and "Shotguns & Pickups." In The Clustered World, demographic detective Michael Weiss draws on the work of market research firm Claritas and its PRIZM cluster system to render a richly detailed view of the many neighborhoods and demographic segments that make up the United States. According to Weiss, the image of America as a melting pot is simply inaccurate--think salad bar, instead. He writes, "For a nation that's always valued community, this breakup of the mass market into balkanized population segments is as momentous as the collapse of Communism.... Today, the country's new motto should be 'E pluribus pluriba': 'Out of many, many.'"
In addition to explaining the cluster concept, Weiss shows how marketers can put clusters to work to understand consumers better and sell everything from college educations to Dodge Caravans. Weiss also looks beyond the U.S. population to lifestyle clusters in Canada, France, Germany, Great Britain, South Africa, and Spain. Marketers and social observers will find this pointillist view incredibly useful and perhaps a little disturbing. The overriding truth behind The Clustered World is that, like it or not, "You are like your neighbors." And in case you're wondering what cluster you belong to, Weiss includes the URL for the Claritas Web site (yawyl.claritas.com), where you can enter your ZIP code to find out more about you and your neighbors. --Harry C. Edwards
Book Description
Michael Weiss expands on the geodemographics of The Clustering of America with this fascinating look at the sixty-two new lifestyle clusters that define Americans and their parallels in other countries. Today, the concept of clustering has spread throughout the world, revealing a global village made up of Long Distance Commuters in Japan and Chattering Classes in England who have more in common with Americans of the same cluster than they do with fellow countrymen. In The Clustered World, Weiss unveils how businesses and bureaucrats utilize clustering systems to influence our opinions and choices about bowling alleys in Florida, vending machines in Japan, and so forth.

Political Dynamic, Missing the Fuse or the Future.......2003-11-09
When Howard Dean used the shorthand expression "guys with confederate flags on their pick-ups" he was actually talking about what some call "NASCAR dads" and Michael Weiss calls the "Shotguns & Pickups" cluster (number 29 in his first book, number 43 in this advanced and improved edition).
Although others have written about the nine nations of North America (Joel Garreau), various "tribes" across the nation, and demographics in general, Michael Weiss stands head and shoulders above all of them in providing the definitive reference work that is also a form of novel about America.
With this book he also begins the process of extending his ideas to he world, showing how neighborhoods in 19 countries can be classified into 14 common lifestyles, the bottom three being Lower Income Elderly, Hardened Dependency, and Shack & Shanty....billions of people disenfranchised by amoral capitalism, whose desperate circumstances have not quite made themselves felt, yet, in America.
I have only one major criticism of this book, apart from its obsession with understanding people in order to sell to them--it fails to go the extra mile in understanding the future consequences of each group's economic status and consumer preferences. Although the book very specifically addresses the politics of each group (predominant ideology, 1996 presidential vote, key issues), it lacks the transformation analysis that might be helpful in understanding the political economy dynamics of each group, and what might be required to craft a new national progressive consensus that reduces materialism, corruption, waste, and restores democracy, community, and sustainable national security and prosperity.
Regardless of this modest shortfall, this is an extraordinary book, as was the first that I also own ("The Clustering of America"). Those interested in how these clusters are coalescing into a new progressive movement that is in-front, deep green, against big business, big money in politics, and amoral globalization, might wish to read Paul Ray and Sherry Ruth Anderson "The Cultural Creatives", Google for "Cultural Creatives" or visit culturalcreatives.org. America is changing. This book by Michael Weiss is a brilliant snapshot of where we are today.
Useful look at how geodemographic clustering works.......2002-06-28
Weiss gives an entertaining and well-written overview of how geodemographic profiling works. He explains the concept, compares the US profiling to other countries, and talks about its applications in marketing. Finally, he provides a breakdown of the 62 PRIZM clusters that existed at the time that the book was written. It may not be the book to learn about the US (but I don't think it's useless in that regard) but it's definitely the book to learn how marketers see the US.
Maybe as a reference book.......2002-05-11
I expected something a little more from this book. It breaks down groups of people/markets into clusters and gives descriptions of the clusters one by one. There is not a lot threading it together. Granted, I gave it a quick look and put it on the coffee table for a couple of months. But, I was underwhelmed. I suspect it may be useful for a pure marketing type instead of an armchair sociologist like myself.
Insightful!.......2001-05-16
Michael J. Weiss documents the way populations have fractured into different demographic and lifestyle groups, or clusters. He gives these clusters catchy names that describe the key lifestyle features which influence their buying behavior, voting, and other choices. This excellent, original, well-researched book focuses on clusters in the U.S., though Canada and Europe are sometimes cited. The book is written in an easy-to-read style, but some may find it difficult to read because of the wealth of detail. Sometimes, it is hard to keep the various clusters straight, particularly in the first few chapters when Weiss refers to them without defining them. However, definition is difficult. These groups are composed of many characteristics, as becomes clear in the last chapter describing the United States' 62 clusters. We [...] recommend this book to those in management or marketing who are developing products, services, and programs for particular niche groups.
Seductively interesting.......2000-10-21
I never thought I would find this book as fascinating as it turns out to be. I first saw it on a friend's coffee table, and started paging through it. Then I had to borrow it. The next thing I knew, I was buying a copy for myself. Michael Weiss writes about a demographic analysis technique which explains a strange thing I noticed 20 years ago. I had moved from a a neighborhood full of 20-something recent college graduates in entry-level professional jobs into a tiny little used-to-be-the-butler's-apartment in a very ritzy neighborhood in San Francisco. All of a sudden my junk mail changed. Instead of credit card offers and Book-of-the-Month Club shills, I started getting letters that said things like "We know all about you. When you want to get away for the weekend, you shun Paris and go right to Morocco." Right.
This book explains what had happened to me: I had moved from one cluster's neighborhood into another. My address now suggested things about my income, lifestyle and assets that just weren't true.
The maps and prose in this book combine to provide a very interesting analysis of how wealth, values and lifestyle are dispersed in this country (and around the world). Clustering was first developed as a marketing tool, and it's undoubtedly a powerful one, but the book works as social commentary, as well. This book is one of the best case studies I've ever laid eyes on of how to make statistical analysis meaningful to the average reader.

The other side of those "British abroad" Movies........2000-09-10
It is good to see that Mr. Judd's survey of 19th Century British military disasters has been returned to print. Although it has often been said that history is written by the victors, this book demonstrates it is far more true that history is written by the side with the printing press and mass media, regardless of whether it won or not. Recall all those "British abroad" type movies of yesteryear, "The Drums", "Gunga Din", "Beyond Mombasa", etc., in which it appeared that a pith helmet, the Union Jack and, possibly, bagpipes were all that was needed to tame savage races. Mr. Judd's book goes far towards refuting that Elstree/Hollywood image.
The book covers six significant British military campaigns/wars from the dawn to the twilight of the Victorian era. Included are such well-known events as the Crimean War to considerably more obscure ones, such as the Zulu War of 1879. In all cases, Mr. Judd has done an excellent job of researching the subject matter and he provides many interesting insights. For example, the inital campaign of the Zulu War was lost in large part due to a shortage of screwdrivers. (You will have to read the book to learn the full story behind that!) There is also considerable discussion about the various efforts at reorganizing the British Army to rectify the errors of previous campaigns.
My only complaint with the book (and hence my 4 star rating) is that it is awfully short (189 pages) for such a rich subject. I would have liked to either have more information about the campaigns/wars already presented, or more such events could have been included. For example, the Riel Rebellion of 1885 would have been an excellent choice for inclusion in a work like this. The book is, however, a terrific introduction to a largely ignored subject area of military history. If this book interests you in the Boer Wars, I would recommend that you follow up with "The Boer War" by Thomas Pakenham.

My 6 yr old really enjoyed this intro book on rain forests. One of the off-shore excursions on our upcoming cruise is the Costa Rican rain forest and I purchased several books on rain forests to get him familiar with the topic This one was the perfect intro book for him. It was written in classic Seuss rhyming style which was engaging for my son. The illustrations were colorful and eye-catching and the information about rain forests was just enough for a 6yr old to understand and digest. We read it while also listening to a "Relax with Tropical Rain Forest" audio CD which provided an added dimension to the rain forest learning experience. I plan on reading the other books on rain forests to him but selectively as they contain much more advanced information.
Not impressed.......2007-01-18
This is the first time I've read a book from the Cat in the Hat Learning Library, so I wasn't sure what to expect. But I wasn't expecting this.
The illustrations make it look like the kids and the cat are having an adventure in the rainforest. But they aren't. They're just on a field trip, I guess.
The book goes over the four levels of the rainforest and names the different types of animals, plants, and people you would find in a rainforest. The main focus of the book seems to be maintaining the rhyme scheme rather than giving detailed information. At times, clarity is even sacrificed in order to maintain the rhyme. For example, "Millions of acres of land every year are cut down..." Cutting down land is confusing to a child. Usually trees or plants are cut down.
One funny thing was that the cat in the hat says he will give you a prize if you find these six things. Well, he's talking to the kids he is traveling with, not "you" the reader. So my 5-year-old son jumped in and named the things, then said "Where's my prize?"
So after around 40 pages of naming and discussing rainforest plants, animals, and people, a bulldozer showed up on the second to last page and the animals are running for their lives. On the last page the cat in the hat says "Save these trees please!" The end. Well, I like the environmental theme, but I had an awful lot of explaining to do when the bulldozer showed up. I think the book should have begun where it ended, because that is where the real story is. I buy books for my kids in the hope that the author can explain and illustrate a topic better than I can.
My son only asked me to read this book once, then never picked it up again.
I gave the book two stars for the unusual format. The novelty might appeal to some kids.
Interesting way to introduce rain forests to children.......2004-10-25
This is one of the best of The Cat in the Hat's Learning Library. The rhyming style is excellent. This book introduces such concepts as four levels of the rain forest, transpiration, animals in the forest, pollination, and camouflage.
