    Book Description

OSHA views safety committees as critical to the development of sound "safety cultures" in U.S. companies. But while 92% of U.S. companies have safety committees, there has been very little information published on how to improve their effectiveness or on how start a new committee. The author wrote this book based on survey information collected by the New Hamphsire Safety Council of employees at over 1000 companies, following that state's reform of Worker's Compensation. He also drew on his own 20-years' experience of working with a variety of safety committees in different industries.

Many of the issues explored can be used either by existing or new committees. Separate chapters discuss committe leadership, training committee members in conducting meetings, supplying and gathering information, and the legal issues confronting companies with a collective-bargaining agreement.

Excellent piece of work. Mr. Spath assessed the qualities of numerous functioning safety committees in New England and reports on the key qualities that make the successful committees function well. Although the assessments were largely performed in non-union shops, the qualities of successful committees are universal. This book is an excellent resource for committee members wanting to start a new committee or members who want to make an existing committee be the best.

After the vast plateau called Yellowstone became a national park in 1872, dozens of federally sponsored scientists entered the area to record details of the region's natural history and ecology. As part of that project, photographers made hundreds of images of the park's most significant features. Research scientists Meagher and Houston have studied these photographs from the 1870s and 1880s and then rephotographed the same scenes, first in the 1970s, then after the great fires of 1988, and then again in the mid-1990s. The resulting sequences of photographs offer a detailed record of ecological change in the park. At the time of the first survey, for instance, the region was seeded with native grasses and only lightly grazed by cattle; in later years, cattle grazing had caused the removal of those native grasses, which were supplanted by nonnative vegetation, including many grasses brought in from Central Asia. (One series of views taken near the park's north entrance at Gardiner, Montana, shows a marked decline, for instance, in sagebrush but an increase in Douglas fir.) Meagher and Houston offer interesting asides throughout on the natural and human history of Yellowstone; for example, they note that meat was transported to the hotels scattered through the national park in metal-sheathed wagons to protect it from marauding bears. As the views show, some things never change: then, as now, Yellowstone was rich in those bears, and in antelope, elk, bison, moose, and other large species. --Gregory McNamee

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant and wonderful.......2005-08-15

What a great book about one of our greatest National Parks. The major section consists of a series of 100 photographs presented in a Then & Now format: photos taken in the 1880's are compared with exact shots (same angle, location, etc.) taken roughly 100 years later. All of the photos depict various views of Yellowstone N.P. Comparisons are amazing: sometimes differences are subtle, other times very dramatic. (All are black & white.) It's amazing that the exact locations could be found, and the author declares that sometimes it was very difficult, requiring much detective work. The results are stunning. There are also chapters dealing with Yellowstone's geology, climate, vegetation, and the effect of human presence in the park. The book is truly monumental, worthy of its subject matter. Highly recommended.

                Book Description

We are at the beginning of a new era, a lifestyle revolution that will transform who we are and what we do, as people and as consumers. The predictable linear, chronological life pathways of past generations -- from school, to marriage, to work, to children, to retirement -- made sense when the average human life span was shorter. Now, life expectancy has soared to age seventy-seven and promises to rise further, and we are starting to make decisions based less on age and more on lifestyle and life stage. Maddy Dychtwald, a leading expert on generational marketing, offers a radical new view of how Americans live, work, and buy according to the new freedoms and responsibilities of our shifting age demographics, and the staggering implications for the marketplace, the workplace, and our lives.

Longer, healthier lifetimes have resulted in a dramatic change in the way we perceive our options. Highly educated and independent men and women are finding adventure, challenge, connection, and a sense of purpose at all ages. People now return to school at age thirty-five, have children at forty-five, start new careers at fifty, remarry at seventy. This cyclic approach to life, Dychtwald observes, has begun to replace the old linear path.

Drawing on her studies of demographics, Dychtwald examines how age is becoming less and less of a determining factor in our choices, and less relevant to how we are defined in our own eyes and by society at large. She brings into focus the wealth of opportunities opened up by the new cyclic approach. Providing examples of pioneers on nonlinear life paths, the author explores increasingly widespread phenomena such as lifelong learning, serial careers, the revamped institutions of marriage and the family, expanded recreational pursuits, healthy aging, and "nonretirement."

Based on her years of experience in generational marketing, Dychtwald also investigates how companies might best respond to the ways our new lifestyles are reshaping the workplace and the economy. How can a business satisfy and profit from the new ageless consumer? How can companies benefit from a cyclic workforce?

For individuals and companies alike, Dychtwald's groundbreaking book will open up exhilarating new possibilities.

3 out of 5 stars An optimistic view of a changing society.......2004-08-25

"Cycles" is about how newer generations of Americans are living a different pattern of life than their parents. In contrast to the linear life pattern of education first, followed by marriage, career, and retirement, newer generations are juggling this process by restarting their life cycle at later ages. This cyclic pattern of life enables people to experience new ideas and interests. College education is no longer just for people in their late teens and early twenties, more people wed several times in their life, and no longer is retirement permanent. This redefinition of life affects the way people structure their families and purchase services.

This book is interesting because is provides a unique thesis of its kind. Although much of the information is derived from demographics, the reader is not bombarded with meaningless statistical numbers.

However, this book has some major flaws. I feel that it is too optimistic about the cyclic life pattern. It does not investigate problems associated with this radical lifestyle, such as the impact divorce has children. At times it makes changing careers sound quite simple. Most importantly, each chapter has a segment on "Buying Implications." Many of the ideas presented align very well with the cyclic lifestyle, but I feel few of the ideas present potential long lasting, stable industries.

The focus is almost exclusively for the Baby Boomer generation, which would probably make it an interesting read for any Baby Boomer. It does provide some food for thought on future buying trends. Best of all, reading this book may even help you out of a midlife crisis!

5 out of 5 stars Chockful of information and insight.......2003-02-18

Maddy Dychtwald's book Cycles arrived on my doorstep at a time of enormous change for my husband and me. We met in college and married a year after graduation. We supported each other emotionally through law school and graduate school. We then both got wonderful jobs and spent 5 years living life to the fullest, with no obligations except to each other. We built up savings and bought our first house. With the birth of our first son, after 7 years of marriage, we finally felt like grownups and set about the business of raising him and his brother, with all the ups and downs and joys and sorrows that parenthood entails. Now, 21 years later, we have made it through 3 life cycles together - that of students, young professionals and parents. When our younger son leaves the nest for college this August, we will be cycling into another phase of our lives - one that I couldn't foresee arriving at when I went out of my first date with him way back when. We have talked long and often about ways to structure this next phase of ours - both as individuals and as a couple. In addition, I am embarking upon a totally new career, after spending the last ten years trying to find my niche. I was pleased to see Maddy's remarks on distance learning, as the certification program that I am enrolled is given online through a major university. It is much easier to fit this kind of learning into a busy lifestyle. I am energized through taking these classes and love the learning they afford me. I greet this time with excitement as well as a bit of trepidation. Reading Maddy's wonderful book I find that I have lots of company - in both my journey through my marriage and my quest for a new form of identity. Cycles answered lots of questions as well as gave me lots to ponder. I recommend this book for all readers - no matter their age. Life is an incredible journey and this book serves as a wonderful road map to help navigate your way through it.

5 out of 5 stars From an Ageless Perspective.......2003-02-15

Maddy Dychtwald has written a powerful and insightful analysis of modern American lifestyles that turns many of our traditional assumptions about successful marketing upside down. In Cycles, her comparison between the "linear" view of life from our grandparents' generation and the new "cyclic" patterns of life today profoundly changes how we view business decisions as well as our own lives. I found her chapter on emerging workforce trends particularly fascinating, with its provocative forecasts for free agent labor and cyclic careers. And her argument is convincing! The old attachments and expectations about life at a certain age are out. What is in? A spirit for personal reinvention at every age and unexpected business opportunities a thousand times over in the second half of life.

5 out of 5 stars Cyclic Lifestyle Provides Exciting Opportunites.......2003-02-14

"Cycles", is an enticing, informative book with a positive message for an aging population. The book provides the Baby Boom generation with insight on leading a cyclic lifestyle instead of the linear one of past generations. This new lifestyle approach provides Boomers with a plethora of opportunites for living, working, and buying. Ms. Dychtwald assures us that we are living longer and healthier and that we can continue to have challenges, adventures and interesting career opportunites throughout our lives.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Blueprint for Future Marketplace.......2003-02-04

Cycles is the essential blueprint for navigating the future marketplace. Ms. Dychtwald has done a great job in laying out what the challenges, opportunities and risks that may define Baby Boomers and society. She adds fresh insight into understanding how the Baby Boomers lives are changing and what executives, leaders and marketers need to know to turn these trends into competitive advantage. Cycles best part are the stories of individuals as they deal with the personal choices that will confront us all. As we all grow older we may be wiser from reading Cycles. This is an informative and engaging book that will give anyone from a personal or a professional viewpoint an in depth look at how to examine their life with more meaning and relevance. I would forecast that Cycles will be the New Passages, helping Baby Boomers--and those that would market to the Boomers--better understand the Cycles that will define our lives.

                      Book Description

Business firms are currently being forced to make a variety of changes to respond to both threats and opportunities in the international economy. This volume examines in detail the many ways successful companies extablish a presence in overseas markets. The authors classify operations in the international environment into four categories. First, companies that do not want to actually establish local production facilities can export directly to targeted markets or engage in turnkey operations. Historically, this has been one of the most important means of acquiring international markets and continues to be a viable strategy today. Second, establishing contractual relationships with foreign companies is effective when a firm does not want to operate a wholly earned subsidy. Third, operating wholly owned facilities in other nations is one of the most preferred methods of gaining and maintaining a presence overseas. Firms typically employ this strategy either by building new facilities or by merging with or acquiring existing companies. The authors demonstrate how the approach used by business depends on the nature of the obstacles a host government places before foreign commerce.

Finally, a how-to guide, in the guise of a Q&A advice column, for marching, flying, or slithering into the battle of the sexes, whatever your species. In this entertaining and informative book, evolutionary biologist Olivia Judson presents "letters" from sexually frustrated animals, birds, and insects who ask "Dr. Tatiana" to explain some sexual oddity. For example, "Don't Wanna Be Butch in Botswana" writes, "I'm a spotted hyena, a girl. The only trouble is, I've got a large phallus. I can't help feeling that this is unladylike. What's wrong with me?" Each question leads Dr. T. into a fascinating explanation about the sex life of this species, sprinkled with sprightly stories about other species with similar attributes or behavior.

You'll learn why one stick-insect copulation lasts for 10 weeks (to prevent other males from gaining access to the fertile female) and why the black-winged damselfly's penis has bristles (to scrape out his rival's sperm). You'll learn that male and female orangutans masturbate with sex toys fashioned from leaves and twigs, that slugs are hermaphrodites with penises on their heads, and that females in more than 80 species eat their lovers before, during, or after sex. You'll also ponder human sexuality when you learn that "monogamy is one of the most deviant behaviors in biology" (although jackdaws, chinstrap penguins, California mice, and some termites swear by it) and "natural selection, it seems, often smiles on strumpets."

Highly recommended--you'll read this through just for the fun of it and have plenty of odd facts with which to dazzle your dinner companions. --Joan Price

                            Book Description

Dr. Tatianas Sex Advice to All Creation is a unique guidebook to sex. It reveals, for example, when necrophilia is acceptable and who should commit bestiality with whom. It discloses the best time to have a sex change, how to have a virgin birth, and when to eat your lover. It also advises on more mundane matterssuch as male pregnancy and the joys of a detachable penis.Entertaining, funny, and marvelously illuminating, the book comprises letters from all creatures worried about their bizarre sex lives to the wise Dr. Tatiana, the only sex columnist in creation with a prodigious knowledge of evolutionary biology. Fusing natural history with advice to the lovelorn, blending wit and rigor, she is able to reassure her anxious correspondents that although the acts they describe might sound appalling and unnatural, they are all perfectly normalso long as you are not a human. In the process, she explains the science behind it all, from Darwins theory of sexual selection to why sexual reproduction exists at all. Applying human standards to the natural world, in the end she reveals the wonders of both.

                            5 out of 5 stars Sex Advice.......2007-09-27

What do you get when you cross a biology textbook, a Dr. Ruth show, a Dear Abby column, and a "Far Side" cartoon? Well, the offspring might be a brilliantly original book named Dr. Tatiana's Sex Advice to All Creation. This collection answers the desperate questions from species as varied as the Australian redback spider to the Louisiana black vulture with Dr. Tatiana's practical, reassuring, detailed explanations. It seems the worry on everyone's mind is, "Am I normal?"

Move over, Dr. Phil. Author Olivia Judson is an evolutionary biologist, award-winning science journalist, graduate of Stanford, and doctorate of Oxford University. Writing as Dr. Tatiana, Judson transforms both difficult scientific ideas and the sometimes-awkward discussion of the (ah-hem!) birds and the bees into accessible, often hilarious reading material. Evidently, virgin births, homosexuality, variety in size and shape of genitalia, elaborate courtship rituals, and cannibalism are not so unusual in nature as one may think. Dr. Tatiana gives her readers - be they insect, animal or human - a sigh of relief along with a much-needed chuckle at our own foibles as she explains, from her expert but kind perspective, why we do the things we do.

And herein lies the rub. While I see Dr. Tatiana's Sex Advice ...as a clever way to teach a wealth of knowledge about natural science, biology, animal behavior, and genetics, I know there are many folks who would balk. The first time I read this book, I wished it could have been included in my high school science class, and fondly remembered time spent in the classrooms of Mr. and Mrs. Puskar, where quirky often served as mnemonic. But I know, especially now, that eyebrows would go way up, and corners of mouths would go way down, at the words "SEX ADVICE", let alone that the subtitle, which announces this little volume as "The Definitive Guide to the Evolutionary Biology of Sex." If "sex advice" in any classroom context is murky ground, then "evolutionary" anything these days is a cause for all-out war.

At the end of September of each year, the American Library Association reminds us to celebrate our freedom to read by marking "Banned Book Week." If Dr. Tatiana isn't on the list of banned books, I'm sure it easily could be. That makes me sad, because I don't like that learning details about the stunning array of life on earth could be seen as bad, harmful, or sinful. Whether you believe it's God's creation or just critters, they still do the things so deliciously described here. Few people have a problem with their kids watching a Discovery channel special about the Lamprologus ocellatus, a fish that lives in one of the Great Lakes of tropical Africa? Somehow, this is different. I guess the real debate comes when Dr. Tatiana (or any biology professor) starts explaining the WHY behind behavior in terms of evolution. Then, the main "worry" of living beings is not, as the cute letters of bugs and fish may suggest, about being normal, but about reproducing and spreading your genes. That does shoot a big hole in the theories espoused in Rick Warren's best-selling book, "The Purpose Driven Life". Not to mention some religious texts, like the best-selling book of all time.

I'm not going to provide a neat little resolution to this debate, not that I could even if I wrote a dissertation instead of a book review. I'm just going to recommend that you grab a copy of Dr. Tatiana and take yourself, the whimsical and weird of nature, and the evolutionary debate on the light side for a few hours. Learn a lot, laugh a lot, and celebrate the fact that in the United States, you can read about a subject from all different angles.

This was just fun to read. And it taught so much. This is a textbook that you gobble up- a rare find indeed. Well, in truth, one can handle only so much sex at one time- the book is excellent, but in small doses. It has provocative imagery, and is jam-packed with both information and theory, requiring a lot of deep thought and contemplation. Judson has the capacity to turn your world upside-down, and make you rethink all of your notions of reproduction and sexuality. She brings in a host of scholarly knowledge and *the* latest research. She also provides a feminine touch, exposing some of the inherent masculine biases that have been in this field for the last few centuries, such as women are not promiscuous, and men are.

This is a truly creative work, formatted in a style to teach and bring enjoyment. Recommended for serious biologists, people who know nothing about biology, people who hate biology, people interested in sex, and those who like the gossip columns. If you're not in one of those categories, you probably won't like this book. Or any other.

Endlessly fascinating, erudite, stylish and, at times rib-crackingly funny. Olivia Judson somehow manages to successfully interpolate "bonking", "copulating", "successful reproductive strategies" and "sexual cannibalism"--practically in the same sentence!--while wisely posing as many (or more) questions as she is answering, and does it with totally engaging wit and style!.

This was an excellent nature book for two reasons - first the content, we learn about the wide breadth of reproduction schemes in nature. Secondly, the structure of the book - as an advice column to creatures with great insight and humor by the author, made this a fun and informative read.
