Book Description
In cross-cultural settings, the author suggests it is not enough to know that behavior differs across cultures, but also how differences in values drive behaviors. To truly understand the differences among cultures, one must understand their origins, how they emerged on the world stage and the various economic, political, physical, social, and religious forces that shaped them. This is a unique book in that it traces the antecedents of people's behavior and shows readers why cultures differ and includes suggestions for adjusting to these differences. Engrossing and revealing, Scarborough's book will be essential for corporate management and others involved in international commerce, but also for their counterparts in the public sector, who also understand why it is necessary to get along with people from other cultures in the pursuit of mutually beneficial goals. Scarborough says, "There may be no greater, more significant void in the knowledge of educated adults than cross-cultural understanding. My book advances that understanding by explaining the reasons why behavior, attitudes, beliefs, and values differ across specific cultures. Its premise is that people who interact with others with different cultural backgrounds, whether in international or culturally diverse domestic settings, are much better prepared if they understand the reasons why people act, talk, think and feel as they do. Instead of being left with just lessons on behavior, to be learned by rote, readers will be able to rely on a substantive understanding of the cultures and societies in which they find themselves, as well as their own good common sense, and in this way work more productively and harmoniously with their counterparts abroad."

...and I would add to the above review: the startling omission of Taiwan and Taiwanese culture -- quite distinct from the Mainland Chinese.
Better Buy Another Book.......2005-08-12
This is a book with an ambitious and interesting title that falls far below the expectations it raises. The author does not have any expert knowledge of the subjects he ventures to treat whatsoever, but only, as he admits, made some reading specifically in order to write this single work. The result is full of hilarious mistakes and blatant inaccuracies: While the author aspires no less that to offer a brief historical overview of all world regions, he is not even able to get names correct, as he confuses Sophocles with Socrates, Diocletian with Constantine, he mixes the order of events, he raises questions that have been settled more than half a century ago (for instance, he thinks the the identity of Mycenaean civilization is "uknown", a question answered in the 1950s), and so on. Definitely a project like this requires far more time, seriousness and ability that this author was able to provide. Therefore, this book is definitely not worth the money and the time invested to read it. The subject can be covered far more satisfactorily by some of the classic book on it, such as those of Edward Hall, Geert Hofstede, Fons Trompenaars and Richard D. Lewis.

Poultry Standard of Perfection.......2006-06-15
This is the book you have to have if you want to breed and sell or show poultry. This is **the** standard. This is the book that tells everybody what each breed is supposed to look like. This is the book the judges refer to, and the standard to which your buyers will expect you to be selecting.
Poultry Standard of, Bantam or Standard, INcludes Waterfowl*.......2003-04-01
Excellent Book. A MUST Have for a Poultry Fancier. This book is great for the Hobbiest, or the serious Showman. Gives detailed pictures, and great Illustrtations of skelton, combs, faults and defects of Birds. Includes all Waterfowl, but not Wilds. No Guineas YET,,, but hopefully SOON*Be VERY careful,,as some of the sellers are selling the Yearbooks, NOT the actual Standard of Perfections, and they are NOT what you want, they simply list breeders names .NO color pictures, NO discriptions. They are Free to club members.
Standard of Perfection 2001.......2002-04-07
This is a very good book to have for any person who is interested in poultry. If you are showing it is a great way to know if you have a goos show bird, and it also very fun just to look at!

Book Description
In vivid prose, Vietnam Vignettes discloses the author's innermost feelings about his experiences as an advisor and an infantry commander in Vietnam in the late sixties and early seventies.
Writing with the clarity of a seasoned journalist and with the insight of a soldier who came up through the ranks, Lee Basnar describes the war's horrific impact on Vietnamese peasants, and details his soldiers' daily struggle to survive. He presents a new perspective on what it meant to be an infantryman in the longest war in our nation's history.
From searching for missing soldiers upon taking command of Charlie Company to leading his troops in a night combat air assault to rescue a beleaguered platoon, the author immerses the reader in each scene. He explains why a top-secret operation in North Vietnam drowned four of his soldiers. He skillfully conveys tension, fear, and courage as his infantrymen engage in a series of firefights across the coastal plain and in the jungled mountains west of Chu Lai.
This collection of tales goes far beyond the mines, booby traps, snipers, and spider holes that his soldiers encountered almost daily. The author decries the unreasonable rules of engagement regarding the use of indirect fire when enemy bullets wounded his warriors in open rice paddies. He voices his thoughts about a staff officer who tragically diverted helicopters to the wrong landing zone - helicopters that transported Charlie Company during one of its many combat air assaults.
He depicts flying with an air force forward air controller on a combat mission. When the pilot dived the OV-10 Bronco spotter plane and fired a white phosphorous rocket to mark the enemy base camp as a target for an Australian bomber crew, the enemy responded.
While a truck convoy that he commanded delivered artillery pieces to the isolated Tra Bong firebase, Captain Lee Basnar rode above the column in a helicopter. When rocket-propelled grenades slammed into the convoy during the return trip to Chu Lai, the infantry officer and his pilot each earned a Distinguished Flying Cross for evacuating wounded soldiers while under intense enemy fire.
Vietnam Vignettes tells of the war's impact on the children who greeted the infantry company during some of its operations in villages near LZ Stinson. It portrays the beauty and the ugliness of Vietnam, the monsoons, the heat, the endless nights, the rattle of machine guns, the tracers lashing the darkness, the misery and the humor, and the tough life of an infantryman in Charlie Company.
The author's respect and admiration for his soldiers who fought well despite the lack of backing from many citizens at home is evident throughout the book.
Vietnam Vignettes is a tribute to all infantrymen who fought in Vietnam, to those who supported them on the battlefield, and to the Americans who welcomed the warriors home
Customer Reviews:
Vietnam Vignettes: Tales of an Infantryman.......2004-11-16
Vietnam Vignettes: Tales of an Infantryman gives a first hand view of the Vietnam War as described by Lee Basnar, an American infantry sergeant and then captain during two tours (1967-1968 and 1970-1971) in Vietnam. However, though the stories are based upon Basnar's experiences many of the stories and situations illustrating in this book are common to any infantry grunt completing a tour of duty during the Vietnam War.
This book contains three parts. The first section, Opening the Duffel Bag, includes background information about Vietnam and about Basnar's first impressions of the country during his first tour of duty in 1967-1968. Commanding Charlie Company, the section of this book, includes stories about Basnar's second tour of duty in 1970-1971. This section holds the bulk of the chapters and experiences of the infantry captain's experiences during this second tour. On the Way. Wait. is the final section of this book and contain accounts of Basnar's final days in Vietnam.
The stories contained in these sections range from comical through heroic to bone chilling. Many of these descriptions aim to educate readers about the cultural and lifestyle differences between regular American life and the life of a grunt during the Vietnam War. These differences are key in understanding the significant conflicts and experiences that these people had while in Vietnam and upon their arrival back to the United States. It is important to note, however, that the author has taken great pains not to preach either the ills or glories of the Vietnam War. His accounts are simply experiences that needed to be shared.
Vietnam Vignettes: Tales of an Infantryman is an extremely valuable work. Beyond the amazing insight into the lives of those serving in the Vietnam War, this book entertains, rivets, and terrifies the reader from start to finish. No matter what your personal opinion of the Vietnam War, this book is a must read.
Revives Memories Without Causing Harm.......2004-11-13
It was good to have some memories of Vietnam revived. Lee revived them without causing harm. Whether the reader was in Vietnam or not, this book offers a perspective on daily life in the war zone without saddling the reader with the a requirement to relive the politics. You can read this book without risk. Lee Basnar should be honored and thanked both for his service in Vietnam and for writing this book.
Honoring the efforts of our troops.......2004-09-12
When I read Vietnam Vignettes, I was transported back to my own two humanitarian trips to Vietnam in recent years. But what a difference! Though my friends and I were met with nothing but warm welcomes and shows of generosity, we tried to imagine what it must have been like thirty years before. Through the pages of Lee Basnar's book, I learned of the fear, the distrust, the misery, the bonding and the loneliness experienced by our young men and women in a land so far from home and loved ones. The book gave me a much better understanding of today's troops in foreign lands and of the scars left by such events.
Don't miss this one !.......2004-08-13
For those of us who served and the families of those who served, Mr. Basnar's vivid, factual, and emotional accounts of the dailey life of infantrymen in Vietnam will capture the imigination of all who read this outstanding book. "Vietnam Vignettes" will seize your attention with not only the life and death struggles of those in combat but will also share with you the tough, reasoned decisions of a rifle company commander who is entrusted with the lives of the American soldier.
Written from the heart.......2004-08-03
Vietnam Vignettes: Tales of an Infantryman by Lee Basnar is an exceptional book written from the heart. With staccato-like shifts of scenes, Basner's book resembles Vietnam War television news clips. However, Mr. Basnar's reporting goes far beyond the 1960's news clips. With his spare prose style, Mr. Basnar not only describes war scenes and events, he also evokes the physical sensation of the war, the incessant noise and the extreme physical discomforts, as well as "the odors. . .the heat, and the soil of Vietnam." The descriptions of violence are never gratuitous. Each vignette serves as a focal point for a particular feeling or experience that creates, for the reader, a mosaic of the entire war experience.
Despite the severe hardships of the war, Mr. Basnar never loses sight of the beauty of the landscape and laments, at one point, that, in the lull of the war's infernal noise, he does not hear the song of a bird. Most importantly, Mr. Basnar conveys the human feelings he experienced as the commander of Charlie Company.
The author's straightforward presentation and acceptance of his feelings puts a humanitarian face on the sometimes graphic war scenes. He describes the intense loyalty of his comrades and his troops' courage and toughness. He touches candidly on the futility of the war and explains the will to survive, not simply a sense of patriotism, as the primary motivation for himself and his troops to fulfill their duties. True victory was staying alive to return home to cherished families. He describes his feelings of fear in battle and the guilt, anguish and sense of failure when any of his men died or were wounded. At times he experienced these same feelings when he witnessed or was responsible for the deaths of the enemy. Despite the trauma and intensity of emotional hurt in the war, Mr. Basnar does not neglect the lighter moments of humor in the Vietnam experience, for example, being the honored guest of a Vietnamese family celebrating Tet.
Mr. Basnar has dedicated his book to his troops whom he decribes as "true warriors." He also seems to be making peace with the ghosts of the past that still haunt him. Vietnam Vignettes is a valuable book, not only for readers with a special interest in understanding the Vietnam War, but for any reader who has suffered any severe trauma. Mr. Basnar, I salute you. I, for one, am looking forward to your next book.

Product Description
The story of the world's newest nation and its incredible struggle to gain independence despite all odds. 'Last Flight out of Dili' is David Scott's remarkable story of East Timor's rise from 'hopeless cause' to freedom, giving us a unique insight into the people and events that have shaped East Timor's recent turbulent history. The book is also a rigorous, fully documented critique of Australian policies over 30 years. Australian humanitarian aid leader David Scott was in Dili on 28 November, 1975 at the swearing in of the cabinet of the Democratic Republic of East Timor. Next day he was ordered to leave by the Australian Government who were aware of the impending large-scale Indonesian invasion. Australia's role in these terrible events is critically documented. He uses personal correspondence with José Ramos-Horta to give immediacy to the story. His use of recently released Australian Government documents adds to the intrigue of these dramatic events. 'Last Flight out of Dili ' is also an account of the hardship, loneliness and dangers that the young José Ramos Horta experienced in his remarkable commitment to keeping East Timor on the United Nations' agenda for 24 years. The foreword is by José Ramos-Horta. David Scott uncovers evidence of Australian complicity in the Indonesian occupation of East Timor and his book is an indictment of the actions of successive Australian governments who abandoned East Timor to years of repression, destruction and mass killings. Why did successive Australian Governments betray the people of East Timor by supporting the Indonesian occupation? And how was it that ordinary Australian people including non government organizations continued through the long years to support the struggle for independence? David Scott answers these questions so that future generations of East Timorese and Australians will know what really happened and why. The book was launched by Nobel Laureate, Jose Ramos-Horta in November 2005.

After the 1994 elections, Newt's zealous promotion of "family values" made lesbian little sister Candace a prime media target. The attention she received not only embarrassed Newt and his cronies, it launched Candace on an unexpected career as a political activist. The Human Rights Campaign Fund recruited her as a spokesperson and for the last two years she's been traversing the country, speaking everywhere from rallies to gay bars and spearheading a voter registration effort. With Chris Bull, a correspondent for the Advocate, a national gay news magazine, Ms. Gingrich tells of her rise to fame and how she hopes it will undo the "accident" that put her in the spotlight in the first place.
Book Description
When the Republican landslide of 1994 propelled her brother, Newt Gingrich, to the top of national politics, Candace Gingrich knew her life would never be the same. Alarmed at the epidemic of gaybashing in America and her own brother's support for antigay legislation, Candace felt she had to act. The Accidental Activist chronicles her journey from being an unknown, part-time truck loader for UPS to a nationally renowned activist for gay rights.
Whether she is exposing the hypocrisy in Newt's "family values," discussing the experiences of famous families with gay members, or trying to reconcile her love for her brother with her hatred of his politics, Candace Gingrich's poignant memoir -- now updated with a new epilogue -- reflects her extraordinary candor and courage.
Customer Reviews:
Expected More.......2005-12-29
With states amending their constitutions to ban gay marriage, the media's fixation on "family values" and the Red state vs. Blue state dichotomy, it is welcome feeling to know that these issues did not spring today or ten years ago when Candace Gingrich wrote her personal and political memoir.
The Accidental Activist by Gingrich (Yes, she is related to the former Speaker of the House of Representatives) is an attempt to describe how she turned to campaigning for GLAAD in opposition to her brother's stand on gay issues.
If only Gingrich had settled on that.
Instead she uses the book as a sounding board to hurl invectives at critics. While she berates the Right for intolerance and hypocrisy, she condones it at her own end. The negative connotations for her opponents are too numerous to mention. Gingrich christens James Dobson's Focus on the Family and Pat Robertson's 700 Club as antigay organizations even though they harp toward abortion. (Not that there is much to like about Robertson).
Indeed just about anyone is termed antigay. Elsewhere she lashes out against "indiscriminate Republican budget slashers"; so much for decency in political discourse.
Other times she is content to leave certain statements that beg for explanation hanging. For example, "A spate of genetic research has shown we are the way we are by nature." What does "the way we are" mean? Or when a fan writes, "My straight daughter was born with rights. My gay daughter has to fight for them." Which rights are being talked about?
The harshest criticism would be on her portrayal of her brother. Lacking nuance, it is a facile attempt to play to his image as the far Right poster boy. She fails to acknowledge that political expediency demands an eschewal of libertarian ideals once in the mainstream. It is not admirable, but elections have never been won by being idealistic.
With Vice President Dick Cheney's daughter coming out as lesbian, the avalanche of events has overtaken this book. If you believe as US News and World Report does in its December 5, 2005 issue that Newt Gingrich is making a comeback, you might want to read the Accidental Activist. If not, there should be tons of good stuff out there, somewhere.
The Accidental Activist.......2002-05-30
This personal and political memoir clearly depicts the struggles and warmth of her experience. The determination to explain what it is like to live as a homosexual in America has been successful. One of the most heroic works I have read.
Radical Left-wing reading.......1998-07-04
The only people that could agree with this book are far, far left wing. Candence simply rides on her brother's fame and runs roughshoud over him. This is one book that should stay in the closet.
Absolutely Activating!.......1996-08-28
Candace Gingrich has in her own way scared me into becoming more
of an activist than I would ever have considered myself being.
Living my everyday life believing that I knew what was going on
in Washington has all changed thanks to the Accidental Activist.
Candace goes out of her way to give "Brother Newt" every oppurtunity
available to counter her words, but is always snubbed instead.
Critics blasting her for using Newt's "fame" as a way to boost her
own popularity obviously haven't read the book! Candace proves that she's
a leader in her own right, and obviously, this Gingrich knows the
true meaning of words such as "power" and "family values". A MUST READ for
ANY and ALL people interested in what's going on in government and
human rights today!
Book Description
P This book examines how and why mothers with disabled children became activists. Leading campaigns to close institutions and secure human rights, these women learned to mother as activists, struggling in their homes and communities against the debilitating and demoralizing effects of exclusion. Activist mothers recognized the importance of becoming advocates for change beyond their own families and contributed to building an organization to place their issues on a more public scale. In highlighting this under-examined movement, this book contributes to the scholarship on Disability Studies, Women's Students, Sociology, and Social Movement Studies. /P

An angel spreads his wings. . . .
Sonny Barger is the number-one spokesman for the motorcycle experience. His New York Times bestseller, Hell's Angel, was an exhilarating history of his adventures with the world's most notorious motorcycle club. Now he brings us rousing, moving, and wildly entertaining true stories of his renegade brothers and sisters in the relentless pursuit of liberty, individuality, and the "ultimate ride."
And what stories he has to tell -- freewheeling, bare-knuckle tales of brawls and battles, brotherhood, breathtaking adventures, crazy quests, and the inevitable classic scrapes with "John Law." The most colorful legends and unforgettable characters of biker lore come alive in this book. In addition, celebrities like Steve McQueen, Johnny Paycheck, and David Crosby thunder through these pages in a sensational collection of rebel tales that runs the gamut from poignant and inspiring to thrilling and utterly outrageous.
Whether you ride, have never ridden, or dream of riding, Ridin' High, Livin' Free is a reading experience you won't soon forget -- a fascinating glimpse into a unique culture of freedom that recognizes only one commandment: the code of the road.

Ridin' High, Livin' Free: Hell-Raising Motorcycle Stories.......2007-07-19
I bought this book for my brother-in-law. So I had to ask him what he thought. He told me how much he enjoyed the book. So buy this book for anybody that is a biker or a biker at heart.
Stories from the road. .......2006-12-31
This isn't really a biography, but more of a collection of stories from Sonny Barger. A lot of them are very funny, and some of them are tales from the road that would make anyone want to hop on a motorcycle. The problem with this book is the introduction when Sonny Barger tells you that some of the stories may be true, and some of them may not be true. He leaves it up to you as you read, but either way the stories are fun to read, and some of them will have you laughing for quite awhile. He even goes outside of the Hell's Angels into other clubs he's aware of and other people he knows sharing stores from them, one of them was on the Dragons leader who was about to buy a Honda until his club members knocked on his door and asked him if it was true.

Not as good as the first.......2005-10-13
Book of short stories of members and events. Kinda left me wanting more.
Not as bad as some, worse than others.......2005-04-26
I was excited when this came out, as I was going through a bit of hero worship regarding bikers. Of course, now years later and a motorcyclist myself, my awe of this life-style has paled.
Barger has to be given credit for where it is due. He's managed to make money of the Hell's Angels for fifty years now. That's pretty impressive. And to be willing to openly discuss portions of his life in that society takes guts. However, this book falls short in many areas.
One, the few stories that relate to the Hell's Angels are over-the-top. It's just too hard to believe these exploits.
Two, the non-Hell's Angels stories aren't any better. The picture painted of bikers throughout this book is that they are greasy, dirty, smelly and disgusting. Even the women profiled here are portrayed as little more than tramps.
Three, we're subjected to Barger's attempt at fiction. Atleast it's only boring, unlike his actual fiction book (DEAD IN FIVE HEARTBEATS), which is a fictionalization of his autobiography with some preposterous action sequences thrown in.
So, if you're really into juvenille biker stories, this is up your alley. If not, but you want to explore this genre, there are plenty of better books available.

Book Description
The efficiency of the process of trade liberalization and economic integration will determine the degree of success of Middle East and North Africa (MENA) countries in coping with global competition. The room for policy maneuvering is sufficiently wide to deserve attention, both externally in terms of negotiations on the terms of bilateral and multilateral trade agreements, and domestically with regards to policies, sequencing and incentives for restructuring and export growth. This volume provides an insightful analysis of the challenges and opportunities facing MENA in the light of multilateral and regional negotiations. Based on papers presented at the Fourth Mediterranean Development Forum, the volume highlights related tensions and tradeoffs, and proposes some policy directions to maximize on the potential gains from trade and Foreign Direct Investment in the context of the new economy.

Book Description
As a group, the developing countries represent the largest source of growth in global energy demand. In 1991, they accounted for about one quarter of global energy consumption and, by 2010, their share is expected to rise to over 35%. The implications of developments in these countries are, therefore, of special importance both for the global energy system and for the global environment. This study examines the recent trends in energy demand in a group of developing countries as well as the factors which underpin the growth in energy consumption. For this purpose, it considers energy demand on an end-use sectoral basis and examines the effects of a range of parameters including the changing levels and patterns of industrialisation, the increasing share of populations living in urban areas, and the rising demand for transport services, all of which are associated with growth and development.
