Book Description
Many companies invest substantial time in administering employee surveys and generating feedback reports, but they rarely see meaningful change as a result. Employee surveys can provide much information about an organization's strengths and opportunities for improvement. The key to successful surveys is not simply gathering information, but using the information to foster changes and improvement in the organization. Folkman provides insight into how managers can accept negative feedback and prioritize issues to take action in areas that provide maximum leverage. He supplies proven techniques that help companies and teams create meaningful change. This book is a great follow-on book for companies using employees surveys.

Book Description
The story of a man in love with a place, a woman, and a dream.
Tom Stone went to Greece one summer to write a novel -- and stayed twenty-two years. On Patmos, he fell in love with Danielle, a beautiful French painter. His novel completed and sold, he decided to stay a little longer.
Seven idyllic years later, they left Patmos for Crete. When a Patmian friend Theológos called and offered him a summer partnership in his beach tavérna, The Beautiful Helen, Stone jumped at the chance -- much to the dismay of his wife, who cautioned him not to forget the old adage about Greeks bearing gifts.
Her warning was well-founded: when back on Patmos, Stone quickly discovered that he was no longer a friend or patron but a competitor. He learned hard lessons about the Greeks' skill at bargaining and business while reluctantly coming to the realization that Theológos's offer of a partnership was indeed a Trojan horse.
Featuring Stone's recipes, including his own Chicken Retsina and the ultimate moussaka, The Summer of My Greek Tavérna is as much a love story as it is the grand, humorous, and sometimes bittersweet adventures of an American pursuing his dreams in a foreign land, a modern-day innocent abroad.
Customer Reviews:
Very enjoyable read.......2006-11-13
The writer has a very straightforward style that I truly enjoyed. The fact that this was a true story kept my interest and made me put the Greek Isles high on the list of places to visit in the next few years.
The author's sense of adventure and risk taking appeals to me.
At the end of this book, I felt that i had acquired a good bit of knowledge of the physical aspects of the islands and even more so about the culture.
A bittersweet summer on the Isle of Patmos .......2006-07-24
You laugh and then you cry when you read this bittersweet memoir. The Summer of my Greek Taverna is a funny, poignant saga of a naive American, whose Greek friend, Theologos, offers him a "summer partnership" in The Beautiful Helen Taverna, located on the small Aegean Island of Patmos. Although his wife and Greek friends caution him to be aware of "Greeks bearing gifts," Stone jumps at the offer. His life is never the same, arriving home at night, at three or four in the morning, completely spent, with no time for sex or even a cuddle, and up at dawn to start another day at the restaurant, only to have his partner swindle him of the profits.
Stone captures the essense of the Greek people and writes lovingly of them, the good ones and the not-so-good ones. My Taverna is reminiscent of many excellent books of American expatriates living in foreign countries, all with their own unique experiences. Memoirs of an American Housewife in Japan is one of many. In spite of his trials and tribulations, Tom Stone survives his ordeal and returns to the states. He opens his own successful restaurant in Southern California. At the end the book, Stone lists "The Menu of the Beautiful Helen," with 20 recipes of his favorite Greek dishes in full detail. If the story doesn't stimulate you, the recipes will. A good read, bon appetit. Yassou.
breath of fresh air.......2005-08-30
Reading these little expat memoirs used to be a pleasure, but now there are so many self-congratulatory accounts that they've long since begun to pall. Greek Taverna is a welcome exception. Stone manages to convey the essence of Greek island life, geography, and ambience without attempting to convince the reader that life in those parts is idyllic and carefree. Indeed, Tom and his family encounter as many problems and stumbling blocks as they might have in NYC, as well as enjoying the beauty and simplicity (all is relative). Reading his experiences is as refreshing as a dip in the Aegean. Bravo to Tom Stone for his honesty, sense of humor, and willingness to remain in Greece despite the bursting of the bubble of his dream.
Stone's book on Greece is right on target in every way.......2005-01-25
As a Greek-American who was born, and lives in the US, but also lived in Greece for 12 years, I am always very interested in reading the experiences of expatriates, especially those from the US. I took some time to read through the other reviews here, especially focusing on the ones with negative things to say. I must say this, because I like to keep my reviews brief: Tom Stone did not produce the perfect book here, nor do I think we should expect that from him---what he did do was absolutely capture both the Greek mentality and spirit, the beauty of the land and its culture, and the very difficult divide in which foreigners who live in Greece full-time find themselves. I highly recommend this book not just for Greek diaspora who want to wax nostalgic of the mother country, but for ANY American heading over for a visit, if not a longer stay. I recently recommended this book to two proteges of mine who were headed to Greece for a short stay, and a semester abroad respectively, and both told me upon their returns that it was a priceless learning tool which enhanced their visits, as well as a very enjoyable read. I cant think of any higher recommendation than that of didacticism and real world, in-country experience. Well done, Mr Stone!
The Summer of my Greek Taverna.......2003-03-18
Save your money and read "Extra Virgin" instead.
In a book about someone opening a greek restaurant, it takes the author half the pages to even begin cooking his first meal. Much of the book is given to the author's whining about money, unfair deals and his struggles.
And to Tom (the author), thanks for reminding us that you sleep in the nude. That added so much to the book.
No laugh out loud moments here and the recipes are just really filler to pad the book.
Book Description
Irene's got big dreamssomeday she'll own a sun-kissed salon in L.A. where her specialty will be recreating the hairstyles of famous literary heroines. And it's a good thing she has dreams, since reality is harsh. She's just been fired from her mom's beauty salon for her tear-jerking shampooing technique, and is forced to take the only other job she can findbabysitting. Now she's stuck at the beach entertaining kids while everyone else is having a glamorous summer. Will she ever get a life?
Then she meets Starla, a mind-bogglingly beautiful lifeguard whose diva attitude, dangerous obsessions, male admirers and cringe-worthy blog supply Irene with enough real-life drama and romance to fill a book. Amidst the complicated friendships, inconvenient crushes and occupational mishaps that seem to define this summer, Irene suddenly and unexpectedly finds that the countdown to real life is over and her fate is in her hands.
Customer Reviews:
a great summer read.......2006-06-22
After being fired from her mother's salon, Irene has to find a summer job quickly. She'd rather be drawing the hairstyles of heroines from literature, her passion. She carries her notebook and a few classic books everywhere, looking for inspiration.
However, the job she ends up taking doesn't seem to provide much inspiration. She will be spending the summer babysitting young siblings Lanie and Evan in a house that only has television for one hour a day.
Luckily, Irene is creative. She comes up with Food Chicken, a dare-style game where each person puts a food item into a bowl, mixes it up and takes turns taking a couple of bites. But getting sick is not her plan for the summer, especially as she continues to receive emails from her far-away friends about all the acquaintances and boyfriends they're making at their camps and relatives' houses.
At the beach, where Irene and the kids bike to in the afternoons, Evan is "rescued" from a fake injury by gorgeous Starla, the lifeguard. Starla has the nerve to ask Irene for $10 to pose for a drawing in her notebook. Then she starts telling Irene about her love gone wrong, D., who dumped Starla at the end of the school year. She's out for revenge and wants Irene to be a witness to the nasty things she does to get his attention. Then she posts information about these actions on her blog along with her horrible poetry. Is this the kind of friend Irene wanted to make?
As she grows more uncomfortable with Starla, she becomes sort of comfortable with D., who turns out to be Drew, a boy she knew in grammar school. Irene thinks he's a hottie --- and he's interested in Irene, too.
Watching the kids, keeping Starla from going too crazy, and maintaining Drew's attention make for a busy and exciting summer after all. Irene quickly makes decisions about what --- and who --- are most important to her and why.
Adele Griffin is a National Book Award Finalist who has created a fun and very human character in Irene. MY ALMOST EPIC SUMMER will be a hit with anyone who worries about having a boring summer.

Irene has a dream--to one day open a beauty salon specializing in the hairstyles of famous book heroines. You know, Great Women in Literature, like Franny Glass, Shug Avery, Janie from Their Eyes Were Watching God. The only problem is, she's just been fired from her own mother's hair salon. Fired. By her own mother. Clearly, this hairstyling business is going to need a bit of work.
But her mother and Judith Prior, owner of a secondhand shop a few doors down from her mom's shop, approach her with a proposition for a summer job-- Judith will pay Irene to babysit her two children, Lainie and Evan, for the summer. Suddenly Irene's plans of drawing more hairstyles in her Heroine Heads notebook, of sunning herself on the beach, are thrown out the window in return for watching two kids.
She's relegated herself to a boring summer when she meets Starla, a new lifeguard at Larkin's Pond, and suddenly Irene's days are looking up. Starla is everything that Irene is not--beautiful, outspoken, brazen, and obsessed with boys. As Starla appears to take Irene under her wings, other things begin to fall by the wayside--like Irene's responsibility towards Lainie and Evan, her good sense, and her easygoing nature.
MY ALMOST EPIC SUMMER is a quick, entertaining read that will have you both laughing and cringing at the situations Irene finds herself in. Although not as emotionally involved as most of Ms. Griffin's previous releases, this is a great book for summer reading!

A clear and compelling guide to the complex world of counterfeiting
This book provides readers with an overview of the complex subject of counterfeiting in the twenty-first century-not the traditional notion of counterfeiting fake currency, but the counterfeiting of luxury goods, pharmaceuticals, engine parts, etc. Filled with compelling stories such as how Glad trash bags have been faked as part of a scheme to launder drug money, this book offers real-world examples of how counterfeiting can occur and how readers can protect their products and brands from it. Leaving no stone unturned, this valuable resource also provides legal remedies, authentication guidance, and digital measures companies can use to fight the effects of counterfeiting on their bottom line.
David M. Hopkins (Denver, CO) is Director of International Business Programs in the Daniels College of Business at the University of Denver. Lewis T. Kontnik (Greenwood Village, CO) is principal and founder of Reconnaissance International, the publisher of Authentication News, an international newsletter that covers counterfeiting prevention issues.
Mark Turnage (Denver, CO) is the CEO of Applied Optical Technologies PLC, one of the largest providers of anti-counterfeiting technology to governments and companies worldwide.
Customer Reviews:
A handbook for businesses trying to understand how counterfeiting works.......2007-01-12
I recently finished Counterfeiting Exposed, Protecting Your Brand and Customers. Unlike Knockoff, The Deadly Trade in Counterfeit Goods, which is a readable introduction to the subject, Counterfeiting Exposed is more of a handbook for businesses trying to understand how counterfeiting works, the damage it does to a brand, and how to stop counterfeiters.
Counterfeiting Exposed includes a lot of useful information, including the names of service providers and tables showing the return on investment that a company can realistically achieve with an anti-counterfeiting program.
I had a couple of quibbles with the editing, though. References to the Virgin Group's "crossover from airlines to music" (page 33) might come as a surprise to anyone who followed the UK punk scene in its heyday. The authors also quote conflicting figures for Proctor & Gamble's counterfeiting losses, at one point saying P&G was losing $300 million a year in China, in another saying the company was losing $150 million a year, overall. And many of the claimed counterfeiting losses are stated as a matter of fact, without any supporting data, which detracts from their credibility.
These criticisms aside, Counterfeiting Exposed covers a lot of ground and is worth a look if you're planning a program to protect your brand.
Practical steps to protect against fraud.......2003-08-29
If you think your product is immune to counterfeit, think again and read this book. It provides practical steps you can use to protect against this dangerous international problem.
It is very insightful and thoughtfully written.

Women who would be kings and their soap opera lives........2002-11-19
I read this book for a history class I was taking. My assignment was to write a book review. My paper was 5 pages. So I will try to keep it short. This book is easy to read for enjoyment, it only took me a few days to finish. However, if you are reading it for research purposes, forget it. You truly need to be familiar with the genealogy of the royals in the 16th century to follow the author. I found myself trying to sketch out family trees for all the characters involved so I could keep up with which Henry was related to which Mary. Don't be turned off, it is enjoyable and interesting to read about the real lives of these women and their true ambitions.
Women Who Would Be Kings and Why They Often Were Not!.......2000-05-04
Lisa Hopkins gives us history from a different point of view in this unique book that focuses on the noble women of the sixteenth century. The book is, of course, nonfiction, but it reads like a soap opera complete with women who have affairs, go crazy, experience failed marriages, miscarriages and every emotional crisis you can imagine. Hopkins gives us a new perspective on how women were used to consolidate the power of the patriarchal male hierarchy of the time. She illustrates how instrumental some women were. She tells the story of women who were the sisters, mothers and daughters of kings and finishes with the unique and diverse histories of women who were rulers in their own right. This book is an enjoyable read for anyone interested in the history of the time. It is integral for the bookshelf of anyone that values women's history in particular.

Book Description
In a rapidly shrinking world, governments everywhere find themselves increasingly obliged to deal with international economic issues. When dealing with such issues, their processes of decisionmaking prove strikingly different from those employed in the handling of political or strategic problems. This unique volume by Raymond Vernon, Debora L. Spar, and Glenn Tobin provides a close-up view of the decisionmaking process within the U.S. establishment as it has wrestled with a series of greatly publicized economic issues in recent years. The book synthesizes a literature that has been accumulating over three decades, deriving from this literature a model of the processes of decisionmaking in the field of U.S. foreign economic policy. Five detailed case studies are presented, each covering a major economic plan or agreement that raised significant controversy. Since the process by which economic decisions are reached involves institutions and characteristics quite different from those encountered in political decisionmaking, Iron Triangles and Revolving Doors emphasizes the persistent regularities to be found in the United States when it comes to economic decisionmaking. The opening chapter offers a model of the characteristics of the foreign economic policymaking process. The next five chapters examine the U.S.-Canada Free Trade Agreement; the battle over the codevelopment of the FSX fighter plane with Japan; the problem of international debt and the creation of the Brady plan; and U.S. trade policy and security export controls in light of the Toshiba-Kongsberg affair. Each of these cases is linked to the overall model of U.S. economic policy presented by the authors. This volume will be an excellent text for university or graduate courses in foreign economic policy, U.S. foreign policy, and international political economy. It will also be of interest to political scientists, economists, government officials, policy analysts, and others looking for insights into economic decisionmaking.

Definitely a Good Read.......2007-09-17
I purchased this book as I like to read about TRUE life adventures. This book will not disappoint. I cringed with a couple of the stories as they are true and one wonders how human beings can survive sometimes. Definitely worth purchasing. I am going to see about other books by this author. Buy it, you won't be disappointed.
Best "bathroom book" ever written!.......2007-09-01
Great for the short of time or attention span as it's a bunch of 1-5 page stories. I call it, "Bad *&@#$% that can happen to you if you visit Alaska". It's one of my favorite books for entertainment & I bought this one as a birthday present for my brother. Great gift item. The stories are riveting.
MORE BIG GUYS, .......2007-07-09
MORE BEARS AND SURVIVAL STORIES..READING THESE GIVES YOU AN EDGE...I NEVER GO OUT IN THE BUSH WITHOUT A WEAPON AND A FIRE STARTER...
Alaskan Melodrama in the Style of Reader's Digest.......2006-07-18
I think reading any work should teach you something, and tales of wilderness incidents should not simply be armchair rubbernecking. This book is a collection of true incidents involving sportsman, backcountry travelers, and bush pilots. Their misfortunes could have been models for preventing readers from finding themselves in similar situations. Kaniut misses this opportunity. Instead of an analysis of the actions that saved the subjects (or cost them their lives), most stories are just circular and pointless recollections of how scary it was having a bear drag you around/being submerged in freezing water/crashing a plane in the backcountry, etc. According to this book, surviving these incidents simply requires some really hard praying, but reaffirms one's love of life and/or faith in god. It's akin to seeing dozens of people pulled from a wrecked plane and saying "WOW, what a miracle!!" while ignoring what the pilot did in the last seconds, recognizing the crew for an efficient evacuation, and acknowledging the skill and training of the ground emergency response crews. Kaniut would relate being mauled by a bear, the conclusion being that this was a terrible attack by a viscous animal, but god smiled and saved the day. In contrast, an NGS story I read after Danger Stalks about several bear attacks on hunters taught me (if I was inclined) how not to handle kills and seasonal factors that could emerge in the future that would make bears more aggressive, all the while infusing the human emotional element of these attacks. A serious missed opportunity is analyzing bush pilots' incidents. This book could have served as an excellent resource for this otherwise dry and difficult to find info (you can read FAA/NASA reports, but they often lack analysis, can be hard to sort through, and often simply blame "pilot error leading to..."); but the reader will have to find their own lessons in the aircraft incidents, if Kaniut provided enough detail between the sermons and anecdotes. Thus distilled, Danger Stalks is either just reflective of the human fascination with other's bad luck or a fluffy triumph of the human spirit book.
Pass on "Danger stalks the Land...".......2006-06-14
First of all, let me just say that I read a lot of non-fiction books about adventure (Jon Krakauer's books, Spike Walker's "Working on the Edge", Greg Child, etc.). I found this book to be boring and uninspiring. The problem is this:
Most of the stories are either far too short to get into (some are even comprised of 2 pages) or just plain boring. The overtly religious overtones of each story were kind of an annoyance, but easy to overlook, and stick with the story. Had I been Mr. Kanuit, I would have chosen 6 of the best stories, (if indeed there were 6 decent stories in here) and written them with far more detail than he does (some stories of lost persons jump from day 1 to day 5, and so on). The few decent stories are hard to come by. I would liken this book to buying a CD for 2 or 3 good songs, with the rest being just filler.
Another annoyance of Mr. Kanuit's writing style is his use of words to describe certain things (he constantly refers to snowmobiles as "snowmachines". Is he from the 19th century or something)?
I feel that I really gave this book a chance, but wouldnt recommend it to anyone. There are just far too many better written and more entertaining books about adventure out there to choose from, rather than settling for this mish-mash.
