Career Barriers: How People Experience, Overcome, and Avoid Failure
Manuel London Manufacturer: Lawrence Erlbaum ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0805825797 |
Book Description
This volume's goal is to help readers understand how people react to career barriers and how people develop constructive ways of coping with them. Drawing on original cases and data from interviews with people who faced different types of career barriers, the author describes how people react to, and make sense of, unfortunate events in their lives--and career barriers when they occur. He considers how and why some people cope constructively while others don't, and explores how resilience and support from others help get us through tough times and emerge with a sense of renewal and career growth. He suggests how we can manage career barriers and prepare for--or even prevent--career barriers through foresight, planning, and education. These methods also suggest what managers and organizations should do to help their employees who are or may soon be facing career barriers. br br People can learn while facing the stress and self-questioning that accompany career barriers, but this is not an easy process. Learning requires considerable self-understanding and environmental support. The organization can play a vital role in limiting people's pain and creating opportunities. However, despite generous severance packages and outplacement services, many organizations have been little help to people who lose their jobs, suffer job stress, face unreasonably demanding bosses, or suffer from physical handicaps or chronic illnesses. Most of the burden falls on individuals and their families. Assistance can and should come from employers, government agencies, educational institutions, and religious organizations. br br While the book focuses on the perspectives of people who have been or may be affected by career barriers, the material should be of interest to a broad range of readers --in particular, academics who study careers, practitioners in the fields of training and development, and government officials who set public policy that affects displaced workers. br

Representing Organization: Knowledge, Management, and the Information Age
Simon Lilley , Geoffrey Lightfoot , and Paulo Amaral Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0198775423 |
Book Description
This textbook provides an accessible theoretical analysis of the organizational impact of information technologies. It seeks to examine and comment upon the myriad ways in which actors, organizations, and environments are represented through these technologies. Contemporary threats to organizational form and stability are considered alongside the potential that information technologies offer to both exacerbate and overcome them. It examines, amongst others, issues surrounding the material and symbolic aspects of information systems; risk and prediction; systems implementation and systems success; knowledge management practices; accountability and other management practices; computerized modelling; and the virtual organization. To this end it deploys a number of different theoretical lenses including: DT systems theory DT social constructivism DT labour process theory DT post-structuralism DT actor network theory These offer complementary and contrasting insights into the computerization of managerial work. In order to ensure that the book is both relevant and approachable to students from a range of backgrounds these theories are applied to real examples of the development and implementation of information systems. This combination fosters practical knowledge that is theoretically informed. The book thus aims to bridge the gap between the abstractions of current theories of organization and the grounded material that forms the bulk of Information Systems literature. It thus offers a novel way into the ongoing debates surrounding technological change and the perennial problems of managerial control. It has been designed to support theoretically informed Information and Technology courses at the advanced undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and will also be of interest to academics in the fields of Management, Information Technology, Sociological, and Cultural studies.

Roger Morriss Manufacturer: Collins & Brown ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1855852993 |
Book Description
The brilliant career and controversial personal life of the great British naval hero are retraced in the richly illustrated selection of his letters. Now in paperback, featuring 140 prints, paintings, and maps, as well as memorabilia. Horatio Nelson is England's greatest naval hero. The fame he sought and won--at the Battles of the Nile, Copenhagen, and Trafalgar--has endured for 200 years. This lavish volume interweaves the remarkable story of his valor at sea with the colorful and controversial events of his personal life--in particular, his long love affair with the spirited and kind-hearted Emma Hamilton. Through his letters to his wife, his fellow officers, and Emma, Nelson emerges not only as a man of ambition and a great leader but as a fragile and emotional personality who followed the dictates of his heart. Handsomely illustrated with paintings, maps, prints, and commemorative items.Customer Reviews:

Doc: Memories from a Life in Public Service (Indiana)
Otis R. Bowen , and William Du Bois Manufacturer: Indiana University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0253337674 |
Book Description
No Indiana governor in the 20th century has been more popular or successful than Otis R. Bowen. This small-town doctor, who grew up poor in Fulton County but was rich in the things that mattered, served on the field of combat in World War II. After being elected Marshall County coroner in 1952, he went on to serve in the Indiana House of Representatives, eventually becoming Speaker, and then to the governor's office in 1973. "Doc" Bowen became a member of President Ronald Reagan's cabinet in 1985, as Secretary of Health and Human Services. The first person to serve eight consecutive years as Indiana's governor, Bowen candidly explores the challenges, crises and triumphs of that period. We also learn of his personal life and his struggles after the deaths of his first two wives and how his third wife, Carol, has helped fill that void. As warm, down-to-earth, and genuine as its subject, Doc, will be welcomed by all Hoosiers, no matter their political stripe.

The Pelican's Briefs: Revealing Reminisces of a Boomer's Hometown
Mark Joneschiet Manufacturer: Writer's Showcase Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0595186718 |
Book Description
Come celebrate a town, Klamath Falls, Oregon; official population 18,538 (people, that is; the cows you will have to count yourself). Join the author in a homespun journey through the past in a town that is the epitome of all hometowns. Located on a route that is the shortest distance between Los Angeles and Seattle, this town seems innocuous enough, however, a peek beneath its exterior reveals enough oddities, quirks and interesting characters to fuel the tabloids for centuries. This rendering of the author's memoirs offers shameless name-dropping of well-known personalities, recounts of events that have local, near-legendary status (among those involved at least) and some actual history that didn't quite make it into the history books.
Fade into the past to an era devoid of terms such as "Duuuude," "Sweeeeet" and "Da Bomb!" Words that will characterize this world are more like "Golly," "Gosh," "Gee Whiz" and "Shucky-Darn". Let a mildly embarrassed pelican guide you on this tongue-in-cheek and often, ironic visit to a place that isn't too far from everyone's growing up experience.
