            Book Description

In the period since the publication of the first edition of this work there have been many important developments in EC and EU law. The intervening years have seen the Intergovernmental Conference leading to the revision now encapsulated in the Amsterdam Treaty. There has also been much important Community legislation. The European Court of Justice has produced a number of seminal judgments in areas as diverse as state liability in damages, indirect effect, equality and standing to challenge the legality of Community action. The second edition of this leading text has been fully revised to take account of these developments, as well as including some of the innovative secondary literature which has been written since the publication of the first edition. It preserves the same structure which made the first edition so successful, and includes a new chapter on capital and EMU, ensuring that students of EU law have comprehensive and up to date text and materials for their study of this fast moving area of law.

4 out of 5 stars Definitive but boring.......2006-04-02

I bought this book because it was recommended by the University of Maastricht (Netherlands) as a textbook to study for the entrance exam that must be passed for non-lawyers to take their Master's course in European Law. I also recently saw it as part of the library of the Munich Intellectual Property Law institute - a program I am also considering.

This book provides definitive coverage of European law and some community institutions. The index, table of cases and acronym definitions are thorough. The history of the European Union and European institutions is laid out and important paragraphs from numerous European Court decisions are quoted and their implications are analyzed.

It is also incredibly boring to read. No author can save the mind-numbing decisions of the European Court. The convoluted and nearly impenetrable language is almost beyond mortal understanding. However, the analysis is also very dry - and while the cause of objectivity is a noble one, an occasional subjective opinion can make a book far more readable. The authors also occasionally refer to cases before explaining them - giving the impression that the book was, at least partially, compiled from previously written articles. This is a bit irritating - particularly in a 3rd edition, you would think that sort of thing would have been filtered out in the previous two versions.

Despite its flaws, this book is useful as a reference and has value for anyone making a serious study of European Law. I would not recommend trying to read it cover-to-cover. How about taking a stand in the next edition? Spice things up a little. In Hartley's, European Union Law in a Global Context, the author makes his point of view known throughout the book, and while the reader may not always agree - it makes the material ever so much more interesting. It would be nice to see something similar from Craig and De Burca, particularly since this book appears to be considered definitive by at least 2 European academic institutions.

5 out of 5 stars Simply The Best.......2004-02-04

I used this book in England where it is the standard text. I'm now studying EU law in the US and am struggling through Bermann, Goebal et al (West 2002). Craig & De Burca is a clear and comprehensive exposition of all the substantive EU law. It also provides some structural background on the EU, though admittedly not as much as the Bermann book and therefore possibly not as much as is necessary for a standard US law school course. Nevertheless for anyone who wants a clearer understanding of EU law, I cannot recommend this book more highly.

            5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2001-07-18

This is the most detailed and best written textbook on EU law that I have seen so far. I use it as a reference all the time.

            3 out of 5 stars usefull.......2000-11-01

i found the book very usefull and helpfull in my EU law graduate studies and i wish we will have a new updated edition of the book.

5 out of 5 stars Academic witch-hunt of the century.......2003-11-29

This book outlines what will probably, in future times, be regarded as about the worst example of scientific suppression ever to take place. After being vetted and passed by a number of scientists, Velikovsky's first book (Worlds in Collision) became a bestseller overnight. No sooner had it been released however than a group of scientists, led by Professor Harlow Shapley of Harvard, threatened the publishers (Macmillan) with a boycott of their books if they did not get rid of the offending title. Since Macmillan made about 80% of their profits from textbook sales, they were forced to ask Velikovsky to take his book elsewhere. (Shapley and co had earlier attempted to prevent the book being published at all). Having threatened his publisher, they then embarked on a sustained campaign of misrepresentation, designed to destroy Velikovsky's reputation. Since Shapley and co controlled the media organs of academia, this campaign succeeded. Velikovsky was never allowed to reply to the grotesque caracatures of his theories which appeared regularly in such journals as Nature and Scientific American. It soon then became part of "accepted wisdom" that Velikovsky had been diproved - which he had not. In contrast to the petty-mindedness of Shapley and co (many of whom boasted of never having read the book they criticised), Albert Einstein remained a close friend of Velikovsky, agreed with him that he had proved beyond question that world-wide catastrophes had affected the early development of civilisation, and died with a heavily-annotated copy of "Worlds in Collision" on his desk.

                Book Description

This book brings together in one volume the most important papers of Robert S. Mulliken, who was awarded the 1966 Nobel Prize in chemistry for his seminal work on chemical bonds and the electronic structures of molecules. The papers collected here range from suggestive to closely detailed analyses of various topics in the theory of spectra and electronic structure of diatomic and polyatomic molecules. Professor Mulliken has written introductory commentaries on each of the volume's seven parts.

Included in the volume are essays of general as well as scientific interest; they are grouped under thematic headings. Part I contains those papers which are of historical significance. An autobiographical piece by Dr. Mulliken offers a glimpse of the many famous people whom he has known. Also reprinted is the text of his Nobel Prize acceptance speech. At the end is a list of his students and other co-workers, and a complete bibliography of his papers.

Part II includes Mulliken's work on band spectra and chemistry as well as his research on the assignment of quantum numbers for electrons in molecules. Part III surveys the author's early work on the bonding power of electrons and the method of molecular orbitals. Included is a discussion of the structure and spectra of a number of important types of molecules. The papers in part IV focus on the intensities of electronic transitions in molecular spectra. This incorporates Mulliken's work on charge transfer and the halogen molecule spectra.

The problems addressed in part V center on the spectra and structure of polyatomic molecules. Reprinted here is a report which Mulliken prepared on notation for polyatomic molecules. Part VI is devoted to the problem of hyperconjugation. These papers develop and apply the concept of hyperconjugation and explore its relation to the concept of conjugation. The last part offers some of the most important papers from the author's postwar publications. The central focus is on molecular orbital theory, the area in which Mulliken's Nobel-winning discoveries were made.

U.S. trade policy significantly affects both domestic and world economic conditions, though a gap exists between large political issues of trade policy and day-to-day corporate business decisions in America. This collection provides a bridge between U.S. trade policies (actual and expected) and the financial, marketing, operations, organizational, and strategic aspects of corporate business policy, presenting analysis of trade policy and its volatility, and exploring its effects on the functional activities of corporations.

                      Book Description

Benson Roe relates his emergence from a mundane, comfortable, middle-class background and education into an exciting and unexpected career in the hallowed halls of medicine and surgery. A career highlighted by the development of open-heart surgery spans the Great Depression, World War II, the earliest phases of modern intensive surgery, and the explosive growth of the new specialty.

In a setting devoid of textbooks, professional mentors and previous experience, Roe forged ahead in his quest to learn new ways of saving lives during the postwar era, when more people in America were dying of heart disease than ever before. Trained as a thoracic surgeon, Benson Roe took on the burgeoning need for cardiac surgery when procedures were in their infancy. Innovative and problem-solving talents provided the basis for the author's many technical contributions and research projects. Academic and professional roles in national surgical politics allowed Dr. Roe the freedom to tackle controversial issues, earning him the reputation of a "boat rocker." His innovative and organizational skills helped shape the character and integrity of the new specialty of cardiothoracic surgery. Dr. Benson Roe was one of an adventurous, risk-taking cadre of surgeons who eschewed safe elitism for dedication.

                      Book Description

One of Stalin's most heinous acts was the ruthless repression of millions of peasants in the early 1930s, an act that established the very foundations of the gulag. Solzhenitsyn barely touched upon this brutal episode in his magisterial Gulag Archipelago and subsequent writers passed over the subject in silence. Now, with the opening of Soviet archives, an entirely new dimension of Stalin's brutality has been uncovered. The Unknown Gulag is the first book in English to explore this untold story. Historian Lynne Viola reveals how, in one of the most egregious episodes of Soviet repression, Stalin drove two million peasants into internal exile, to work as forced laborers. The book shows how entire families were callously thrown out of their homes, banished from their villages, and sent to the icy hinterlands of the Soviet Union, where in the course of a decade, almost a half million would die as a result of disease, starvation, or exhaustion. Drawing on pioneering research in the previously closed archives of the central and provincial Communist Party, the Soviet state, and the secret police, Viola documents the history of this tragic episode. She delves into what long remained an entirely hidden world within the gulag, throwing new light on Stalin's consolidation of power, the rise of the secret police as a state within the state, and the complex workings of the Soviet system. But first and foremost, she movingly captures the day-to-day life of Stalin's first victims, telling the stories of the peasant families who experienced one of the twentieth century's most horrific instances of mass repression. A compelling story of human suffering and survival in Stalin's Soviet Union, here is a new chapter in the history of the gulag, virtually hidden from sight until now.

I got interested in the subject of the gulag by reading a book called "Cannibal Island" which told the horrifying story of one settlement in the gulag.

This book is a more scholarly and detailed examination of the gulag. It is a truth "that was suppressed for nearly sixty years, locked in Soviet archives and buried in the memories of frightened survivors" (p 2).

The communist party, and Stalin in particular, declared war on the kulak class during the 1930's. A kulak was a slang word for a tightfisted person, and the communists were certain that the country would flourish if only they could be rid of those peasants who hoarded food and goods.

In fact, the country was in a state of chaos and the people who were branded kulaks were as likely to be already starving as hoarding anything.
Yet, "In the violent context of the First Five-Year Plan, the countryside became a foreign country to be invaded, occupied, and conquered" (p 32).

Millions were swept up, wrenched from their families and their land, sent in over packed trains to the gulags. And millions died. Typhus and smallpox, exhaustion and starvation claimed the poor peasants who were sent to the gulag.

In their desperation, many tried to escape the gulag, only to perish in the vast emptiness of Siberia. Some rebellions occurred, and were swiftly put down. The dry reports from those in charge make for grim reading, containing such statistics as half of the women had ceased to menstruate due to hunger (p 133).

5 out of 5 stars Excellent scholarly work on the lost gulag.......2007-05-29

Gulag is the abbreviation for the vast agglomeration of prisons, penal camps and settlements that held the millions of citizens the Marxist/Leninist Communists enslaved. This scholarly work covers the establishment of the settlements populated by the expropriated "kulaks" -- rich peasants, the definition of which changed constantly.

Millions of people, mostly entirely families, denounced as enemies of the socialists were arrested because they owned a cow, a tractor, had employees, had more goods than a neighbor, were simply disliked or because a Communist functionary needed to meet a quota. They were forced into box cars without adequate food, water or sanitation and sent hundreds or thousands of miles away into exile. Thousands died enroute, still more thousands were executed. And many more thousands died when they were forced to labor in forests, mines and on primitive farms in the name of socialist glory.

Lynne Viola has conducted extensive research, including many hours in the formerly sealed archives of the security organs. Her unadorned prose is all the more horrifying: "The survivors noted that the people whom Soviet sources labeled non-able-bodied and who some of the bosses called "ballast" were the most vulnerable during the famine." There are extensive quotes from the letters of the exiled, letters which of course were confiscated by the socialist authorities. There are excerpts from the endless reports of the bureaucrats who spent enormous time blaming others for their failures to extract more work from their slaves.

Most people will be unable to tolerate reading "The Unknown Gulag". It is not likely to find favor among the left-wing who prefer to pretend that socialism didn't kill and enslave hundreds of millions of people in Europe, Asia and Africa. For the few who can deal with the truth, Lynne Viola has performed a great service.

                        Book Description

Giving the best and most informative explanation to date of the mystery of Stalin's death, renowned historians Roy and Zhores Medvedev have written a gripping new biography of Joseph Stalin, based on findings from research into archives only recently made available, as well as the Medvedev brothers' own experiences during and after Stalin's brutal regime.

Conventional beliefs and cliches are contradicted and disproved, inaccuracies and misconceptions are corrected, and the facts about Stalin's intellect, ancestry, and the fortunes of his personal effects after his death are fully examined. Perhaps most remarkable of all are the Medvedevs' revelations and contentions concerning Stalin's death: There has been much suspicion over whether he was assassinated or died of natural causes, and the authors go a long way toward resolving this question.

The Unknown Stalin resonates with particular intensity due to the personal detail and recollections of the two authors—each of whom has his own history as a Russian dissident and commentator. This startling new work represents one of the most significant contributions to the study of Russian history in decades, a book of vital interest to scholars and general readers.

2 out of 5 stars Stalin; Still Unknown.......2004-04-10

As my children are related to Molotov by marriage, I am always interested in new books about Russian figures, especially since the fall of communism. I will persevere with this book, but it is frustrating to be told "Stalin eliminated many rivals on his way to the top; historians know their names." Thanks; what about the rest of us? Also, Russian translations have a certain annoying quality bordering on condescension: "If you're reading this book you must be ignorant; otherwise you'd know it all and wouldn't have to read this book"! In general, are translators working from first to second language, or vice versa? That would affect their choice of words, and we should be told. There is still a lot of habitual excuse-making and spin control, even when one of the authors has been exiled since 1973! This must be part of the Slavic genome. But I still plan to finish it, and I think it's worth reading, especially if you are part of the Russian diaspora as I am.

This is a wonderful introduction into the life of Stalin and the history of the Russian Revolution. The author explains the difficulties involved with writing about a person like Stalin. The prejudices of writers, both within and without the Soviet Union, Communists and Non-Communists, believers and non-believers make for an interesting biography. Many questions will be unanwered for years to come. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Book on the Man of Steel.......2003-01-12

New books are still being written about Stalin, of course, incorporating new and interesting material from the newly opened files of the old Soviet Union. But none that I know of can compare with Hingley's.

Significantly, Hingley's most important facts concerning the dictator are still basically correct, while his judgment remains absolutely sterling. By all means read Volkogonov's new book - it's excellent - but there's not much in the newly discovered facts which renders Hingley's opinions and verdict wrong or obsolete. Don't forget, some of the mysteries surrounding Stalin's career, like the question of who really killed Kirov - probably Stalin did - will always remain unsolved because Stalin had all those involved put to death in the nick of time, while what files we may still have are merely those he had not destroyed. With his clerk-like mania for files, and his vampire-like bloodthirstiness, Stalin was very thorough in eliminating ALL evidence, whether in the form of paper.......or flesh and blood. So there's a real limit to how much new we can ever know.

I have most of the most important books ever written on Stalin in the English language, and none I know has managed to be so detached and objective on the one hand, and so devastatingly, gut-splittingly funny on the other, as Hingley's. Stalin's life is a deadly serious story if there ever was one, and Hingley manages to be humorous and scholarly at the same time - no mean feat. This book is a gem.

I think the three important things to remember about the little (he was 5'3", shorter than Napoleon) Georgian-turned-Russian Bolshevik is that he rose (contrary to his own and everyone's expectations) from nothing to become THE most powerful person who EVER lived in ALL human history, by far; that this murderous TYRANT played a key role (unwillingly at first) in the destruction of HITLER and Nazi Germany; and that he assisted (without desiring it) in the resurgence of CHINA. Of course he also gave a bad, bad name to Marxism......not that anyone else could have done any better!!

This is one of the finest books I've ever read and possessed. Finding it was a great stroke of luck.

Catherine, nineteen years old and suffering from severe schizophrenia, sat in a mental hospital—mute, catatonic, and hearing voices. Her psychiatrist, Dr. Daniel Dorman, was convinced that his patient's psychotic behavior was not merely rooted in chemical imbalances but rather in the dramatic circumstances of her family history. He was therefore determined to avoid the mind-numbing medications that had been so detrimental to Catherine's well being. Dorman fought adamant opposition and criticism from his peers and superiors for a chance to guide Catherine out of madness. Dante's Cure is the riveting true story of a woman's triumph over her schizophrenia without medication, written by the psychiatrist who helped her.

Dorman's book illuminates the inner world of a young girl with schizophrenia. Although there are no cut and dry explanations given for how she ended up the way she did, the book illustrates how life experiences can detour someone from the norm when they have never been exposed to a different social dynamic.
The final chapter alone is worth the purchase. Dorman grapples with the knowledge that modern medicine defies its own conviction in scientific methodology by putting the scraps of information about neurobiology into effect through the use of psychiartic medication, while completely ignoring the recovery of all schizophrenics who haven't used medication.
Dante's cure is a good read over all. It doesn't contain all of the answers one may be looking for but what it does contain will hopefully be common knowledge in the near future.

                                    1 out of 5 stars absolutely preposterous!.......2004-09-23

I wonder if schizophrenia is a correct diagnosis for this woman, it sounds more like a personality disorder. Schizophrenia is a REAL brain dysfunction that up to now, doesn't have a "cure" and medications help some symptoms but the illness doesn't go away. It is irresponsible of a physician to attribute his sessions "curative" powers without any clear methodology. Pharmacotherapy is not about drug companies, is about quality of life, I wonder who can wait 20 years and see someone 6 days a week to "improve". Again I doubt this person had schizophrenia.

5 out of 5 stars Valued contribution to psychiatric medicine .......2004-09-10

Dante's Cure: A Journey Out Of Madness by Daniel Dorman (Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, School of Medicine University of California at Los Angeles) traces the history of Catherine, a woman suffering from severe schizophrenia in the 1970s and was admitting at a UCLA hospital as an adolescent anorexic who was suicidal and heard murderous voices in her head. Dr. Dorman describe's Catherine's condition, her background, and moments of interpretative breakthroughs, and his work with her in resistance to collegial pressures to medicate Catherine. Dr. Dorman set up in private practice and continued his sessions with Catherine. Gradually she was able to begin a recovery, live in an apartment, attend college, and eventually qualified as a psychiatric nurse. Of special interest is Dr. Dorman's epilogue setting out his rationale in opposition to the dominant psychiatric view of schizophrenia as a "brain disorder" requiring medication. He persuasively advocates a humanist, patient-doctor collaborationist approach as illustrated by his years of work with Catherine. Dante's Cure is a welcome and valued contribution to psychiatric medicine and a recommended addition to personal, professional, and Mental Health Studies library collections.

                                    1 out of 5 stars Dangerous and self-deluded bunk.......2004-08-19

This book is dangerous and self-deluded bunk.

Dr. Dorman tells the story of a young woman patient he began treating when he was a psychiatric resident at UCLA in the 1970's. He was under thirty and she was nineteen. Apparently, after seven years, the patient, Catherine Penney, was cured by Dr. Dorman.

Dr. Dorman is still so in the thrall of his "curing" of this woman, that now some twenty-five years later he has written what amounts to a romance novel about this treatment. He has supposedly practiced psychiatry for 30 years. What has happened since? Has he "cured" anyone else? Perhaps he's had some failures? The rest of his practice is a blank slate.

It may be admirable to attempt to treat schizophrenia without "drugs," but perhaps it is only Dr. Dorman who can do this. Is this really a viable treatment paradigm? And based on this one case, Dr. Dorman seems to extrapolate that "chemical imbalances" relating to schizophrenia don't exist. Dr. Dorman comes across as downright dangerous in his rigidity and self-inflation, and seems to have skipped all his classes in medical school relating to scientific methodology.

In a recent publicity interview found online, Dr. Dorman claims that Catherine Penney is permanently cured, although, short of having God-like foresight, how he can make such a statement is mind-boggling. But Dr. Dorman does say that "he can't cure everyone." Really? Now there's humility for you.

                                    5 out of 5 stars Real non-drug cure.......2004-07-07

This book is an awe-inspiring account of a psychiatrist's refusal to do anything less than cure his patient. He did this without the use of drugs, in itself an amazing thing. It was not an easy road to a drugged recovery but a thorough, life-affirming process which allows his patient to live life as it is meant to be lived.

As a post graduate student facing an econometrics course for the first time I found this book to be invaluable. I found the delivery of material particularly in the `modern' topics to be much more accessible than in either Gujarati or Enders. Some knowledge of statistics and some elements of mathematics are required, but as I quickly learned, any text on econometrics at this level requires these skills. Some authors try to overcome this hurdle by including reviews of statistics and matrix algebra either in an appendix or in an introductory chapter. Watson & Teelucksingh do not do this. They present any required techniques in the body of the text . While for me in a few instances the necessary skills required reference to introductory statistics texts, I found this to be more convenient than the summaries that are found in the appendices or introductions of other econometrics texts. After all, such summaries are typically attempts to fit elegant theoretical constructs into a few bullet points. My recommendation to the post-grad student to whom econometrics is new is to use this text and where necessary support it with whatever statistics text you were comfortable with at undergrad level.

the book is simple and makes the tough parts of econometrics understandable.however some core background topics are lacking... statistical depth for persons without a solid background in statistics. such is found in other texts(see jonston, gujurati, koutsoyannis, intrilligator).furthermore the book assumes prior knowledge of matrices, hence those without a solid background herein,at left at a loss.
