          Book Description

The first edition of this book, published in 1963, presented a mass of critically analyzed material on the agrarian condition of pre-colonial India--a subject which until then had received little attention. Many of its key findings, particularly those concerning administrative institutions
and the position of the zamindars, have become standard tools in the field. This revised and updated edition draws on extensive new research by the author and others, and it presents much that is new in both description and perception. It also includes an expanded bibliography, a new descriptive
index, and new illustrations and maps.

5 out of 5 stars Knowledge Diffusion in the U.S. Aerospace Industry: Managing Knowledge for Competitive Advantage.......2007-06-03

How does the aerospace community--particularly the large commercial aircraft (LCA) sector--effectively spur economic competitiveness on a global scale? Taking a multidisciplinary approach, the authors identify knowledge as an essential element in innovation and technological progress, and attempt to explain how the industry's disproportionately large population of highly skilled and highly paid workers, engineers, and scientists impact the global economy. Based on the results of more than a decade of work under the NASA/DoD Aerospace Knowledge Diffusion Research Project, the book contemplates how individuals and companies recognize, process, and exploit knowledge. The authors evaluate LCA sectors in the United States, Western Europe, and Japan; explore how knowledge diffusion and public policy shape research, development, and production; and summarize how the race for new technology sparks economic competition in this scholarly volume geared for students, scientists and researchers, and practitioners shaping public policy.

4 out of 5 stars Canadian Maritimes guide.......2002-03-13

I am planning a trip to the Canadian Maritimes the summer of 2002. I purchased Fodors Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, PEI guide to assist in my plans. So far, I have found this book to be a valuable resource. It is arranged first by province, then by towns/sites within each area. For example, in the Nova Scotia section, there is basic opening information about the province (its history, culture, climate, etc), then there is a large section just for Halifax. Within that listing, you find numerous places for site seeing, place to eat, to lodge, to shop. One aspect of the book I especially like is called "Off the beaten path", where you can find unusual places worth visiting. The guide is print-only, with maps, so the only thing that could make it better would be a few photographs. I would recommend this book for anyone planning a visit to the Maritimes this year.

As usual, Fodor's Gold has the best in guide books for visiting away from home. My copy is well thumbed and much used (if not abused). I strongly recommend this guide and all others like it.

If you're in the business of marketing or developing products and programs for kids, What Kids Buy and Why belongs in your office.

How can you create outstanding products and programs that will win in the marketplace and in the hearts of kids and parents? Dan S. Acuff and Robert H. Reiher have invented a development and marketing process called Youth Market Systems that puts the needs, abilities, and interests of kids first. This system makes sure you won't miss the mark whether you're trying to reach young children or teens, boys or girls, or whether you're selling toys, sports equipment, snacks, school supplies, or software.

Based on the latest child development research, What Kids Buy and Why is chock-full of provocative information about the cognitive, emotional, and social needs of each age group. This book tells you among other things—why 3-through-7-year-olds love things that transform, why 8-through-12-year-olds love to collect stuff, how the play patterns of boys and girls differ, and why kids of all ages love slapstick.

What Kids Buy and Why is the result of Acuff and Reiher's almost twenty years of consulting with high-profile clients including Johnson & Johnson, Nike, Microsoft, Nestlé, Tyco, Disney, Pepsi, Warner Brothers, LucasFilm, Amblin/Spielberg, Mattel, Hasbro, Kraft, Coca-Cola, Quaker Oats, General Mills, Broderbund, Bandai, Sega, ABC, CBS, I-HOP, Domino's, Hardee's, and Kellogg's.

                                      Special features include:

                                    • an innovative matrix for speedy, accurate product analysis and program development
                                    • a clear, step-by-step process for making decisions that increase your product's appeal to kids
                                    • tools and techniques for creating characters that kids love

Here is the complete one-stop tool for understanding what children of all ages want to buy.

5 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for.......2002-11-13

I've been on a quest to figure out of the optimal youth age breaks based on cognitive abilities, and this book gave me exactly what I was looking for. I was fascinated by the content on both a professional and personal level...I would love to see the authors update the book with some more current product examples (it was published in 1997) and to see what further impact the growth of Internet usage since 1997 has had on the market.

I finished this book last night without regrets. It lit up many ideas that could be realized into revenue generating opportunities. Although the book doesn't encourage the sales of 'disempowering' products, services and programs for 0-19 year kids, it does give you insights as to why kids love 'bad' stuff too. I would have wanted more info on the 16-19 year olds though. But the author did state that these 'kids' consider themselves as adults and recommended marketing to adult books. Perhaps, the books The $100 Billion Allowance and Wise Up to Teens would help expand on what this book already taught me.

Although this book approaches the child marketing area from a unique view (developmentally), what I found refreshing was the attention to responsible marketing according to children's ages (chpt. 2!

Acuff and Reiher are two of the best practitioners in the kids market today. They combine tremendous experience across a number of kid categories with a discipline and method that are unique. Their book What Kids Buy and Why offers many of their important insights and trends about kids. Their approach is developmental and psychological. Their perspective is grounded in brain development with a sound underpinning of why kids behave as they do at specific ages and across gender. This is stuff that is critical to marketers in understanding how kids behave. Their work offers the long view of child development brought up to date with important marketplace developments that are showing how kids are changing even as the biology that shapes behavior has a constancy. There are too few books -- let along quality ones -- in the kids market today. Acuff and Reiher's offering is a must read for anyone interested in kids marketing. More interesting as a primer for what different age children are "into" (or could be into) than for the step-by-step how-to sections.

I agree with the reviewer who notes that it reads a bit too much like a sales pitch; I don't think it detracts too much from the observations.

                                        Book Description

These Western Civilization, Second Edition books explain why western civilization is worth knowing about. Taking a topical approach, they stress social and cultural themes, they ask, “What is the West?”, and incorporate significant discussion of peoples and civilizations outside the boundaries of the West. Provides a more coherent introduction to global issues than a world history presentation. Western Civilization, 2/e is accompanied by rich visual images, numerous textual excerpts, provocative special features, and timelines, charts and maps that make the narrative even more accessible. Each chapter now includes internet resources for research. Examines the French Revolution and 19th-century social and political movements in depth. Discussion of religion now occurs at key junctures in each chapter. Updated first chapter reflects the latest findings in paleoanthropology. Epilogue includes recent events such as global terrorism. Covers Social/economic history—e.g., gender roles, family and children, elite groups, urban/rural contrasts, cities and associations, commerce and manufacturing, and technological innovation. Book Description

Practical, concise, and easy to use, Simon & Schuster's Guide to Rocks and Minerals contains everything that the rock and mineral enthusiast needs to know. This field guide is divided into two large sections -- one devoted to minerals and one to rocks, each prefaced by a comprehensive introduction that discusses formation, chemistry, and more. All 377 entries, beautifully illustrated with color photographs and helpful visual symbols, provide descriptions and practical information about appearance, classification, rarity, crystal formation, mode of occurrence, gravity of mineral, rock chemistry, modal classification fields, formational environments, grain sizes of rocks, and much more.

Whether you are a serious collector or an information-seeking amateur, this incomparably beautiful, authoritative guide will prove an invaluable reference.

This is a thick little book. The introduction is detailed, informative, mathematic, and scientific. I learned a lot about how minerals are formed and grow by just reading the intro. The book has great color pictures and the descriptions are placed on the facing pages next to the pics. Shows the mineral's form, specific gravity, rarity, and where the specimen in the pic was found. Also describes the physical properties, occurrence, environment, and uses of the mineral. I especially like the back section 'Introduction to Rocks'. There they talk about the earth's layers of crust, sedimentary processes, volcanic activity, rock collection, meteorites, and generally a whole lot about rocks! Then there is a bunch of pictures of rocks with their descriptions like the mineral section. This is a very handy guide whether collecting in the field, or if you just want to learn about rocks and minerals. Would recommend.

While a reasonably good reference guide, it makes the grievous error of claiming Franklinite and Zincite from Franklin, NJ are "rare". True only if you consider a mineral that was estimated to be "around 800 million tons" to be rare. It was mined in both Franklin and Ogdensburg {Sterling Hill} for over 100 years because it was so plentiful.

These minerals are only rare in the same sense that a Brooklyn, NY phone book is rare.........OUTSIDE of Brooklyn, NY! People on eBay reference this guide to "prove" the rarity of the minerals and it's just WRONG!

S&S Guide to Rocks and Minerals is a very worthwhile purchase for experienced collectors. The usual Simon and Schuster system is here, but used in an excellent way. The descriptions are the best that could ever be in a Simon and Schuster guide. The gemstones and minerals pictured are beautiful and clearly photographed. There are hundreds upon hundreds of rocks and minerals listed, which makes it one of the best companions in the field. It isn't bulky, and the correct size to carry with you on a mountain trip or archaeological dig. The rarity and value is also given, including the luster, weight, and durability of a particular rock.
The two editions released on the market today do not differ noticeably, as in every edition of a Simon and Schuster guide. The "Fireside Book" press is less complete than the newly revised edition, but not in a large way. A serious collector should purchase any edition quickly along with the Audubon Society guide.

It would be especially useful to students interested in the scientific properties of gems. I found it useful because it describes where gemstones are found and how and when they were discovered. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the subject.

and it is a little more technical than the rest (explains things like twinning, establishment of density, calculating specific gravity, cleavage, moh's scale, refractive indices, law of refraction, genesis, cutting, cutting styles etc).
it includes gem descriptions in much detail (thou the order in which they are arranged is a mystery to me and really bugs me, as i have to flip and flip until i find what i need).
for diamond it includes a table comparing 4 color grading systems used (which is cool).
large section on organic gems and synthetics.
all in all i see it as a really good (almost) professional level book on gems and precious stones.

Well, I had to go into a real bookstore to check out dinosaur books. The one drawback about shopping online, you really can't be sure what you're getting unless someone tells you. Well THIS book is great. Where most of the books I flipped through had an all around discussion of when, when, and how of dinosaurs, most of them didn't really show you many of the actual dinosaurs! I'll tell you what this book HAS. First, a really quick grouping of the different types of dinosaurs. At the beginning of each time period, you get a summary of what life was like at that time, a picture of the earth's continents, and who was where. After that it's ALL DINOSAURS! You get a well illustrated pic of each dinosuar listed, its size with comparison to an average height human, and it shows which period they lived in and where. There is a short one paragraph summary of the life and habits of each dinosaur. This is a really great book that gives you a lot of dinosaurs with info to help you understand. Not much about their digestive systems or how many leaves where on the plants around them. This- is a DINOSAUR BOOK!

5 out of 5 stars Had to own it!.......2004-08-12

We checked this out at the library. My nearly-three "read" it so often that he wound up tearing a page. We got it fixed up and then checked it out again. Finally, we decided to buy it. He loves the detailed drawings and illustrations. I like that there are lots of pages of drawings so he has something to look at for a good while. It is a "real" book, so it's a little dangerous in toddler hands. If they enjoy dinosaurs, though, this one should take you through the years. There's enough science info to be interesting through the middle school years.
This book is a great addition to your dinosaur lover's library.

This was a great book. I got it in 1993 and have liked it ever since. It lists every dinosaur from Nodosaurus, to Dryosaurus. It's got about two-hundred pages, and gives information on every animal and dinosaur in the book. It shows animals that aren't even dinosaurs, and if you like dinosaurs (Who Doesn't?), you will certainly enjoy this book.
