The Role of Corporate Reputation for Multinational Firms: Accounting, Organizational, and Market Considerations

Among many factors contributing to a corporation's success, none is more crucial than reputation. It affects the way management makes decisions and the positions it takes, and how it takes them, on critical issues. A good reputation is also a signal to the market--one way that stakeholders will know that a corporation is successful. Riahi-Belkaoui looks at the most crucial functions and influences that determine corporate reputation, among them, the way it affects a firm's market value; the quality of its disclosures; how well its earnings are managed, how its executives are compensated. He also addresses other processes, such as international production, the informativeness of earnings, accounting choices, and the characteristics of earnings forecasts. The result is a succinct, readable, probing study for corporate decision makers in various functions of the firm, their academic colleagues, and knowledgeable onlookers who need ways to evaluate and buttress their investment decisions. Riahi-Belkaoui examines the process of reputation-building first, then the role of corporate reputation and how market value and accounting value differ. He moves to the impact of contextual factors of multinationality and corporate reputation on accrual and cash flow valuation models. In Chapter Four he shows how corporate audiences construct the reputations of firms by interpreting information signals about the firms from various monitors. He then reports the result of an empirical study of the 100 most international firms, which supports the general hypothesis that corporate audiences construct reputations on the basis of information and firms' earnings management. In Chapter Six he turns to the relationship between the level of corporate reputation and managers' ccounting choices, and in Chapter Seven examines the value relevance of earnings, cash flows, multinationality, and corporate reputation. Chapter Eight advances the hypothesis that corporate boards control top management behavior by means of compensation, but also by judging them on organizational effectiveness and social performance. He restates a general model of international production, and in Chapter 10, hypothesizes that the level of corporate reputation affects both the informativeness of earnings and the magnitude of discretionary accounting accrual adjustments. He ends the book by providing empirical evidence of the relationship between economic performance and organizational effectiveness, a measure of overall social performance.

All written by the same author.)

Because of my deep passion for books on study skills among other subjects, & also in the light of my consultancy work in the schools, & success coaching with kids/teens/adults, this wonderful book naturally caught my eye.

In essence, & for the purpose of completion, this Resource Specialist Guide is part of a systemic package that also includes the Consumable Student Workbook (or edition). You may also need to access the Reproducible Student Workbook (or edition) or the Reproducible Student Edition in the form of a CD-Rom.

The entire package is targeted primarily at teachers (as well as parents who yearn to become learning facilitators at home) in "special education" from grades 6 to 11 (middle school to high school). In this context, here lies its strength, although the stuff inside is suitable for those in general education.

In reality, the resource guide provides an incisive overview of the educational issues (or the instructional components) addressed in the student workbook. It has a primary focus on helping struggling students in meeting the demands of the mainstream curriculum.

Content-wise, from the perspective of study & thinking skills, this book is similar to `Study Max: Improving Study Skills', also by the same author, but the latter is targeted at students in grades 9-12 (high school). This book is structured in such a way that both teacher & student can make use of the book.

From the organizational standpoint, the chapters in this books are systematically arranged as follows:

Part 1: Learning styles & preferences (1 chapter);
Part 2: Getting organized (4 chapters);
Part 3: Turbo charging reading & studying (5 chapters);

There is another book, `Study Wise: A Program for Maximising Your Learning Potential', also by the same author, which is targeted at college students. In this particular book, & with a slight twist, there is a greater emphasis on developing critical thinking skills in the content areas & in the real world!.

From the organizational standpoint, the chapters in this books are systematically arranged as follows:

Part 1: Maximising your learning potential: figuring how to win in school (4 chapters);
Part 2: Developing school success system: learning how to study productively (5 chapters);
Part 3: Applying strategic intelligence: getting what you want, need & deserve (5 chapters);

Strategy-wise, all three books share a common thread: they help students acquire the basic & advanced study & thinking skills that will allow them to develop their full academic & vocational capabilities. They also provide step by step procedures for functioning more productively not only in school, but also in life.

In each case, students learn how to study efficiently & effectively, & they learn how to handle real- world challenges, deal with setbacks, solve problems, and avoid miscalculations that could be potentially life altering. In effect, they learn to think strategically, act smart, and study wise.

The author strongly believes in one fundamental premise in writing the books, which I fully concur: the difference between successful students & struggling students usually boils down to one basic thing:

`effectiveness & efficiency in their learning & studying strategies'.

Judging from his credentials, the author has apparently an impeccable track record with a field experience of more than 30 years. With a stable of 18 books, he certainly has an in-depth knowledge about learning as well as learning difficulties.

For the teacher as well as parent, I would also recommend you to read another of the author's books:

`Roadblocks to Learning: Understanding the obstacles that can sabotage your child's academic success'

This book, just like the above three books, has also been very well-written.

To sum up, each of the earlier three books has engaging, applicable techniques for student achievement, as well as hundreds of realistic activities & practical exercises, plus case studies, for immediate application.

I personally like Study Max over the other two, in terms of reader friendliness & action-packed learning. However, I rate 5 for all of them.

Yet, with the entry of many new small airlines and trucking firms facing the financial pressures of competition, many legislators fear that public safety will be reduced due to compromises in maintenance, equipment replacement, recruitment and training. This volume examines the theoretical and empirical issues involved in the debate on the relationship between safety and economic performance in the airline and trucking industries. Contributors discuss such factors as the role of government as provider of safety oversight personnel and airport and road space quality, and conclude that the government has not acted quickly enough to provide the additional safety resources to meet the changed needs of the two industries, though the evidence does not support the notion that deregulation has compromised safety.

General's son writes his biography.......2005-01-05

This is a biography of an American soldier, not one of the first rank in prominence, but still an important figure and an interesting man. Maxwell D. Taylor was assistant division commander of the 82nd Airborne Division through the Mediterranean campaign, visiting Rome incognito to scope out the prospects for the proposed airdrop on the Italian capitol in 1943. When the commander of the 101st Airborne fell ill early in '44, Taylor was the obvious successor, and he led that division through Normandy, Holland, the Ardennes, right up to the end of the war.

There was more to Maxwell Taylor than soldiering, though. He spoke half a dozen languages fluently (oddly, given where he served in the War, one of the languages was Japanese) and spent some time as director of the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City. After the war, he rose to prominent rank in the army, commanding the forces in Korea in the last days of the conflict there, then serving as the Chief of Staff of the Army. He broke with the Eisenhower administration over policy issues, entered the private sector, and only returned when President Kennedy asked him to head up an inquiry into the Bay of Pigs fiasco. He served as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs under Kennedy, and as Ambassador to Viet Nam, before finally retiring.

The author of this book is John M. Taylor, who happens to be the General's son. The book is therefor an interesting study in how analytical an author can be when writing about his own father. Frankly I think Taylor does a good job with Taylor, being relatively objective when he needs to be, and stating what the General thought about a particular issue intelligently.

This is a relatively good biography of a relatively obscure figure. I don't imagine there will be another bio for a good long time, and that's fine, because this book will suffice.

Life as an Ambassador.......2000-06-18

This book is brimming with facts that although sometimes aren't necessary, but all in good standards. What I enjoyed most about this book was the road he took in order to become an ambassador. It is one of the more detailed journies of this type that is written in a book. Some of the parts in this book that deal with his diplomatic policy are hard to understand, but for the most part i was able to understand somewhat what he was trying to convey. This book did lag in a few parts, it is less entertaining and more informative...it did take me a while to finish reading the book. I woudl recommend it because it seems to give a true heart felt perspective on what life is like to be a career ambassador.

Video pornography has been a staple of gay male culture for decades, but there is little written about the people who perform or produce this entertainment. Charles Isherwood has written a modern tragedy about the life and death of porn star Joey Stefano. After a rapid climb to the top, Stefano died of an overdose at age 26. Isherwood is a good reporter who holds no illusions about the porn industry. Ecstasy and Wonder Bread is both a hard-hitting exposé of an industry that uses people up and then spits them out and a sympathetic portrait of a young man whose desire for attention and fame was equaled only by his inability to say no.

A Parable for Our Gay Times.......2006-11-10

With the explosion of porn distribution on the net and the constant rise and fall of "stars" being basically anyone paid to be naked for an orgasm in front of a camera at any time in their lives, the story of Joey Stefano is a cautionary tale that many ought heed. This entertainingly written and fairly well researched biography is a brief but revealing text. Perhaps Stefano's life could not carry a longer book, either. In any event, the reader will join him on a fast down escalator into self-destruction that shows the reality of low self-esteem, emotional insecurity, and short life span (in the marketplace or, like Stefano, literally) that often marks the human fabric of this industry. Well worth the investment of time and money, not least because a number of the people in the book, like Chi Chi LaRue, continue as active presences in the business of the meat market.

Why?.......2006-09-18

The only thing that I got out of this book what that Joey Stefano broke the glass celing in the porn world for being a bottom. It is his life story but it is just the same: A troubled kid with a drug, sex, and alcohol problem. I would have like to have read a store where he turned his life around and made an impact. I dont recommend this book.

Sad story. Not a tragedy..........2006-01-05

What I got out of this was a portrait of a beautiful, self-involved, rather self-indulgent young man who gave in to his weaknesses and lack of motivation or ability to do anything aside from relying on his looks and sexual prowess. As such stories usually go, this mindset led Stefano down a road of self-destruction and eventually death. It's certainly a fascinating portrait of a time and place very specific in Gay pop culture and adult-film history; this is a must-read for any porn aficianado for the very colorful events and characters that pop up in Joey Stefano's story. The author does a good job of outllining the events of his life and contextualizing them in the gay-porn scene of the late '80s to early '90s when gay video really came of age.

However, i must again disagree with those who characterize this story as a "tragedy". A tragedy implies that the participants had no choice or fought valiantly against the forces which eventually overwhelmed them. Joey Stefano made his own choices and was clearly not willing to own up to them---yes he was gorgeous and had great sexual mystique but he was all too willing to squander his gifts in a morass of drugs and self-degradation which he enthusiastically participated in. Clearly he was too willing to buy into the myth that you are only worth as much as your beauty allows (a too-prevalent attitude in the gay world) and his unfortunate lack of self-awareness was his ultimate undoing.

Compare and contrast him with the story of his mentor, Chi Chi LaRue---a large, homely man who became one the most successful business people in the porn world. LaRue had enough character and self-awareness to realize that looks would not get him along in the world---hard work, character, and a willingness to confront harsh realities are all necessary qualities for anyone but especially to those not gifted with dazzling good looks. LaRue becomes the de facto hero of "Wonder Bread and Ecstasy", especially considering that although Stefano barely gave him the time of day during their friendship/collaboration LaRue stood by him through anything and everything. That Stefano perished at an early age, burnt out and used, and LaRue emerged successful and thriving to this day, says much about the vagaries of vanity, empty self-gratification and excessive worship of beauty in the gay mainstream media.

A Tragic Life Revealed........2005-08-06

The first time I saw Joey Stefano in film I was overwhelmed by his beauty, his body, his sexual appetite, and his vulnerability. I think that vulnerability; that good boy/bad boy persona that was able to reach out beyond the screen is what made him into the "star" he became. Those who saw him fantasized being with him, and in the process, perhaps to protect him from all those things that could and would hurt him. His meteoric rise to fame, and his tragic demise are recounted in this sad tale about a man who became a legend in his own time.
One thinks of stars who's greatness was cut short...Kurt Cobain, Judy Garland, Carole Lombard, among others...and then there too was Joey Stefano.

You sir are no Norma Jean........2005-03-11

I'll cut some slack for this being Isherwoods first book but alas ther is nothing to see here. His Norma Jean approach to Nick Iaconna life is cliche' at best. To Isherwoods credit he does include morsels of what was going on in gay culture at the time of the early nineties which are genuinely intresting observations. Isherwoods took the E! true hollywood story approach to this bio and quite frankly been there done that.There are no new insights or revelations about the porn industry or gay culture.

In the last two decades of the 20th century, China stood out as the world's star performer in economic growth, thanks to the market-oriented reform that started in 1978. At the turn of the century, the Chinese economy faces a series of challenges to sustain its growth and stability. The two-decade-long rapid growth has effectively strengthened China's economic power and raised its people's standard of living. It has also transformed China from a centrally planned command economy into a "socialist market economy", which operates increasingly in line with capitalist norms. Major structural problems, however, remain and are growing acute. Weakness in the fiscal system breeds rent seeking at the local level and causes tension in the state budget. The flawed financial institutions and the biased ownership structure continue to distort resource allocation and cause huge efficiency losses. Inter-provincial and inter-regional disparity is reaching a level that threatens national unity and social stability. As China joins the World Trade Organization and becomes more integrated into the world economy, it urgently needs to improve the domestic business environment and to beef up indigenous industries for foreign competition.

This volume is a collection of papers written by scholars at the East Asian Institute to address those problems during the period 1999-2001. The authors, with their knowledge and experience in China studies, provide in-depth observations and professional analyses of some of the most important issues for the Chinese economy at the turn of the century.
