Book Description

"SuperLeadership" was coined by authors Charles Manz and Henry Sims to describe a management style that focuses on "leading others to lead themselves". In their earlier book of that title, they established a philosophy that moves away from the typical hierarchical models (the traditional autocratic, heroic, or directive approach to leadership) to show how to utilize the richest resource a company can have: employees who are empowered and transformed from followers into "follower self-leaders", or superleaders.

In The New SuperLeadership, the authors bring this philosophy into the real world with contemporary examples and profiles from the high-tech and knowledge-based business sectors. Special emphasis is given to how organizations and managers can undertake the transition to this new management style.

5 out of 5 stars BUY THIS BOOK, NOW!.......2001-05-12

Finally, a book has come along that can truly make you a better leader. Over the years, I have bought a plethora of leadership books and this is the first one that is not just a rehash of the same old material. The authors provide sound arguments as to why a SUPERLEADER approach to leadership is the ultimate form of leadership. And they do not stop there. They also provide the reader with a detailed description of the steps necessary to practice SUPERLEADERSHIP.

If you want to learn how to lead yourself as well as lead others, then this book is a must for your library.

5 out of 5 stars This book rocks.......2000-05-15

This book is the Holy Grail of leadership principles, as far as I'm concerned. If I could just sneak a copy into my boss's mailbox... The thing I like about it is that it gives you real concrete examples of how you can give subordinates max freedom (and thus max satisfaction) while maintaining your goals as a leader. The only problem is I just cringe whenever I go to work and see my superiors violating the principles of the book. I am amazed this book hasn't sold more copies.

        Book Description

A delightful book recording the pleasures and pitfalls of daily life on the family dairy farms in upstate New York.

Part biography, part chronicle of social life and customs, part memoir, the pieces in this collection draw heavily on Richard Triumpho's experiences as a farmer, but he also wrote for Hoard's Dairyman on a wealth of other subjects, including his trips to Russia, China, Switzerland and New Zealand. The essays here reflect the diversity of his interests, from artificial breeding in dairy cows to taking a banya (steam bath) in Siberia.

5 out of 5 stars Comforting For All Ages and Reminds Us We're Not Alone.......2007-04-03

This book is written in such a poetic way that it makes it an easy read. It's like you're reading someones diary. Yet, it offers words of comfort and inspiration. It gives parents the words to explain war to children and provides understanding for the loved ones of soldiers. I could read it over and over (sometimes I do!).

3 out of 5 stars Title is misleading.......2007-03-12

The book is filled with pretty interesting poetry. The fact that that's all there is is what's misleading. I was expecting more of a diary, not a collection of poems. If you'd rather read poems you'll definitly like it.

                                Book Description

This in-depth examination of a compelling public health case takes you step-by-step through the world of medical detective work, as the Centers for Disease Control determine whether Dr. Acer did infect Kimberly Bergalis and other patients, and, if so, whether Acer's actions were accidents or acts of premeditated murder. At the same time, it raises a myriad of public health issues that are of concern to us all.

Fatal Extraction clearly shows how the Centers for Disease Control--and other government agencies--respond to the Bergalis case and similar incidents, examines why government officials act as they do, and questions what they can do differently. As the book unravels the mysteries surrounding Kimberly Bergalis's tragic infection, it informs readers of the actions we can expect (and should demand) our government to take to protect the health of patients, medical workers, and all citizens.

Mark Carl Rom is assistant professor of Government and Public Policy, Georgetown University, and a Robert Wood Johnson Scholar of Health Policy and Research at the University of California, Berkeley. Rom also served as Project Manager of the U.S. General Accounting Office's inquiry into the CDC's handling of the Bergalis/Acer case.

A wonderfully written memoir, overflowing with miraculous stories, of a Buddhist private eye who vows to heal her community's suffering from violence and racism.

Altars in the Street is for people who live in cities and those who have fled them. It will speak to anyone who cares about the future of our children, our neighborhoods, and our nation, as well as anyone who wants to look truthfully at the relationship between poverty and prisons and between community and education. Drawing on deep reserves of good humor, common sense, and practical experience of nonviolent action, Melody Ermachild Chavis has written a moving testament to the power of spirit in today's often cynical world.

Altars in The Street is one of the best books I've read in a long time, because it demonstrates what can be done to counter the degradation crime and drug abuse bring to a city neighborhood. I found the book very hard to put down--not only because it reveals the workings of an inner city neighborhood, but also due to the autobiographical account of one family's courage in staying put on their street despite often overwhelming adversity. Melody Chavis shows how all available resources could be marshalled to try to restore a peaceful, caring environment for families and children of different races and economic backgrounds. Whether this completely succeeded or not, the book shows in a practical way how a sense of community and neighbor helping neighbor work to maintain a safe and viable place to live--wherever one may be.

5 out of 5 stars An emotional masterpiece to bind the gaps of race & religion.......1998-11-13

Chavis' book is one of the few to literally draw tears from my eyes. It is a beautiful life story of one woman's difference in both race and spirituality, and her ability to make a difference by them. I truly believe that if word of mouth could only get around, it is deserving of the NY Times Bestseller. This book should be read as a novel, as well as a handbook on how to make a differnce in the world...in society...in your life.

                                  5 out of 5 stars Memories.......2006-07-12

I am writing this before I have finished reading Atomic Farmgirl. I am a product of an era just before Teri Hein so some of my memories are slightly different. But, I grew up on a farm in northwest Iowa. Instead of wheat and peas, we grew corn and soy beans. Her descriptions of the very simple events of any given day are so clearly described that they evoke very strong memories for me of my childhood. Learning to drive the tractor during the haying season; helping hold a piece of metal while Dad was welding (though my father insisted we wear the special mask to protect our eyes); the smell of the horse stalls and tack room were most evocative. The lunches in the field, the "party" telephone line; the balky Shetland pony and the wonderful replacement horse... Unless one has experienced these things, it is probably pretty boring, but for one who lived a similar childhood, I am loving it!

The importance of family lineage and the naming of farmsteads by the original owner is so typical of rural America. Even 15 years ago living in a small town in Iowa, our home was known by the name of the owner during the 20's-50's, not as our home. Who your grandparents were was very important, and sometimes created social strains over issues as insignificant as a dead dog incident that happened 50 years before!

The underlying theme of the leakage from the plutonium plant is not within my experience, but is certianly an interesting focus for this story.

So read Atomic Farmgirl and learn about life in rural America during the 50's. It's not that way now, to a great extent, though our son, his wife, and 8 children are still trying to live out that wonderful farming dream.

5 out of 5 stars extraordinary and haunting.......2003-05-27

I got this book because of a great review in Creative Loafing that called it "extraordinary and haunting." I couldn't agree more. It's literary, it's historical, it's funny, it's tragic, it's good. And talk about timely.....in these days of warped homeland security, this book gives a birds eye view of what that is all about. The new foreward for the paperback version is , in two words, very concerning.

Apart from having a terrific title, this book is not very good. Teri Hein clearly loves the land on which she was raised. The personal stories she tells, as well as the extensive research she seems to have conducted into the region's history, do show as much.

But the information is jumbled and formless. The book has no shape; the chapters tumble along, one after the other, with no apparent thought to how they're ordered.

We're subjected to pages and pages of the Chief Qualchan story and other historical information, and then even more pages and pages of mildly cute stories about Hein's childhood, and there's not enough language or skill present here to tie it all together to make an interesting whole.

A really good editor and a lot of rewriting might have made this an actual book. As the volume stands now, it reads like a history report by an extremely bright eighth grader.

I am a sucker for any book that caters to the Northwest. I grew up in Richland, Washington within the shadow of the Hanford Nuclear site. When I saw that first-time writer Hein had written about growing up in the Palouse country of Eastern Washington and, even more consequential to me, being impacted by the radioactive fallout of the Hanford, this became a must read.
Hein is a teacher of children with cancer at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle. Her writing experience before this book seems to have consisted of college essays. However, the experience of her family and her neighbors growing up on farms around Fairfield, Washington, approximately 25 miles south of Spokane emboldened her to write. In summary, of the ten farm families living in her extended neighborhood, seven of them had cases of cancer, thyroid malfunctions, lupus and other ailments that have taken the lives of many people. A not insignificant number of them were younger than fifty when they died. While never proven to be directly caused by the leak of radioactive material from Hanford, the density and severity of medical conditions led her and others to ask the obvious questions.
Within her immediate family, Hein's father suffered a brain hemmorage that almost killed him in 1967, when the author was 15 years old. In the fifties he had radical surgery to remove a cancerous thyroid, leaving him with a limp in his left leg and amoung other side effects. All of her three sisters and her mother take medication to compliment damaged thyroid glands. This is not uncommon in their area. The author herself has escaped any noticable illnesses.
While the connection between Hanford and public health has long been debated and studied over the years, this book does little to add to the data. Instead, Hein has written a memior that, through anectodal stories that are near and dear to her, tries to convey a sense of what it is like to see many around you afflicted in ways that are mysterious and frightening.
Unfortunately, while her motives are sound and honorable, Hein misses the mark. She spends far too much time writing about the commonplace life experiences of a farmgirl in the Palouse and not enough time writing about the illnesses and the connection with Hanford. For extended stretches of this book, I thought I was reading an essay entitled "How I Spent my First Sixteen Years of Life". While she writes with some decent passion and has some amusing stories to tell, she seems to have forgotten that the reason for writing this book is to describe the unusual and tragic consequences of the illnesses all around her. I wanted to stand on a soapbox and tell her, "Get to the point!". Page after page after page of describing the Flag Day parade in Fairfield, picnics to the creek, grooming horses, driving the farm machinery and other sundry memories did nothing to move the story along. This could have been a much more important book if Hein had balanced it with some research into Hanford and if she would have taken more time to not write about herself.

                                            Book Description

Commercial Data International's (CDI) Country Reviews are concise, up-to-date sources for political and economic information on the 190 nations defined by the U.S. State Department as Independent States of the World, plus Serbia and Montenegro. In addition, data on Hong Kong and Taiwan are included in the Country Review for China.

Each Country Review begins with an overview which provides key demographic and geographic information as well as full color regional and country maps by Magellan Geographix. Government and political information is provided in a format which enables the Reader to get an overview of the organization of the various branches of the government, a brief summary of current political conditions, and a list of current leaders, including a biography of the head of government/state. Economic information, compiled and condensed from a large number of reliable sources, is presented in the Country Reviews in statistical tables on key macroeconomic ! trends and economic sectors. The economic data is organized in an easy-to-understand format. Foreign investment conditions are also covered along with a capsule description of stock market trends, for those countries where major stock markets exist, a listing of key enterprises. Also included is a summary of current environmental issues, natural hazards, international environmental agreements, and, for most countries, a table with time trends in Greenhouse Gas emissions.
