Successful experiment design starts with a statement of aims. The authors guide the reader through planning an experiment, including defining objectives, considering treatments, measurements of interest and the time and timing of assessments. Advantages and disadvantages of different experiment designs and the importance of data exploration and graphical presentation are covered, as are data collection, storage, validation and verification. Statistical techniques include the t-test, anlaysis of variance, basic regression analysis and non-parametric techniques. Assumptions inherent to these techniques are clearly identified (bearing in mind the principles and aims) without losing the reader in statistical theory. All of the techniques are illustrated with worked examples and give full interpretation of the results. Formulae are kept to a minimum in the main text, but are given in full in the appendix.

Propelled by deep technical, economic, and cultural changes, network utilities have, in the last twenty years, entered a new era. Since competition has been widely introduced and promoted, we have experienced a radical change in the structure of the industries and the role of the state authorities. Their role in managing monopolies has evolved into regulating new forms of markets, which has resulted in the creation of independent regulatory authorities. These new public bodies work with governments to try and reconcile the needs of competition and public service missions. This suggests the use of recent developments in economic theory to handle complex problems. This volume offers an exploration by scholars and regulators of the new regulatory regimes across Europe. The first part presents the pioneering experiences of the United Kingdom and Sweden. The United Kingdom has quickly chosen to establish powerful and independent individual regulators. Reforms in Sweden have been more gradual and regulators have, in the first instance, acted mainly as mediators. Part two is devoted to second wave developments that took place in various European countries, i.e. France, Germany, Italy, and Spain, countries where the legal tradition is less conducive to the concept of independent regulators. There the regulators are often (but not always) less powerful and meet more obstacles in their efforts to prevent either the formation of oligopolies or the resistance of incumbent monopolies. In Germany another problem has emerged as the federal tradition prevents the creation of independent regulators in certain key sectors. The contributions in the third part of the volume throw some light on the problems of coordinating national regulations. One can observe the continuous emergence of modes of cooperation between national regulators, as well as European authorities. Faced with certain categories of problem, the European authorities are themselves led to act as common regulators. The countries of central and eastern Europe, which are progressively converging towards the general economic model of the West, are more and more concerned with the accompanying regulation problems. Last but not least, the Internet raises worldwide problems of regulation that are beginning to be seriously considered.

My favorite of the Rebel Lives series.......2007-02-26

This biography of Cuban revolutionary Haydee Santamaria was my favorite volume of Ocean Press's "Rebel Lives" series. More than any other of them, it best accomplishes the goal of introducing an important and interesting -- even inspiring -- figure who is almost completely unknown to English-speaking audiences.

Haydee Santamaria was one of the leaders of the Cuban Revolution of the 1950s, one of only two women to take part in Fidel Castro's ill-fated assault on a government garrison on 26 July 1953. Her brother and fiance both died in the attack, and she herself was jailed. After her release, she rejoined Castro, working undercover for his guerrilla fighters and even travelling to the United States to raise funds and purchase equipment.

Following the victory of the revolution on New Year's Day 1959, Santamaria became director of the Casa de las Americas, a cultural institution that supported Latin American art and literature. By focusing on promoting Latin American culture and assisting victims of persecution by military regimes in the region, she had an unambiguously positive role. Unlike other, better known Cuban revolutionaries such as Castro and Che Guevara, she was not tainted by Cuba's development into a single-party state with serious deficiencies in democracy and human rights.

After a 13 page introduction, chronology and biographical sketch by editor Betsy Maclean, the remaining 110 pages are divided into two sections of roughly equal length. The first, "Fire", consists of a few long interviews with Santamaria and essays by her, about her role in the Cuban revolution and the Casa de las Americas. The second section, "Light", is filled with a large number of short tributes to her (mostly on the occasion of her death in 1980), including contributions from Juan Almeida, Alejandro Obregon, Silvio Rodriguez, and of course Castro and Che.

The image that emerges both from Santamaria's own words and the tributes of her friends and comrades is of a determined, dedicated, profoundly human being, open and kind, but principled and passionate, deeply scarred by tragedy throughout her life, nevertheless continuing on as long as she could. I had never heard of Santamaria before picking up this book, which showed me a truly inspiring figure. By the end I was deeply interested in Maclean's discussion of why "this giant of revolutionary history, this shining example of feminism and internationalism, [has] been relegated to the shadowy corners of Latin American political memory".

Recommended for all those who have not yet heard of Haydee Santamaria, especially teachers interested in obtaining primary sources relating to the Cuban revolution.

Enlightening and thought-provoking .......2007-09-01

I have suffered with major depression for over 16 years now, but was officially diagnosed with depression just a couple short weeks ago. The title of this book is what immediately caught my attention. I knew I had to find a way to read it. I decided to check to see if my local library had a copy. It didn't. But I was able to get a copy from a public library in another city through inter-library loan.

I saw myself so often in this pages of this book. It made me feel less alone. Reading Ms. Thompson's book was like having an intense personal conversation. This book is extremely well written. Ms. Thompson has some great insights. I love her brutal honest. She gives an honest and complete disclosure. She talks openly about the good, the bad, and the ugly. I would highly recommend this book to people who suffer with depression themselves. But I would also recommend it to those who are struggling to understand the struggles of a friend or family member who struggles with depression. There are things in this book that caused me to think about my own situation in a new way. Some of her insights are profound. It couldn't have been easy for Ms. Thompson to write this book. After all, she was a well-known journalist. She was risking her career by writing with such brutal honesty. But I am so glad that she was able to overcome her fear of rejection. She has done all of us, especially those of us who suffer with major depression, a great service. I am so thankful for this book.

Best personal account of depression I've ever read.......2007-06-30

Like other great heroes, Tracy Thompson probably does not consider herself heroic. Nonetheless, she is very much a hero of mine. "The Beast" helped me soldier through the blackest days of my life, for which I will be forever grateful to Ms. Thompson.

"The Beast" is an exceptional and excellently written description of a deeply private, highly accomplished woman's journey out of a dark night of her soul.

If you suffer from depression or if you wish to better understand depression in order to support a loved one, I encourage you to read "The Beast."

One of the best books abot Depression I have ever read.......2006-10-07

This is a book from the inside out, meaning the author writes well about the subject because it comes from within. I have read several books about depression, and this is the one that has impressed me the most. Honest, well-written, and it tells it like it is. At times I found myself disagreeing with the author's actions (but who am I to judge) as if she was a character (see, it reads like a good book, a novel even, definitely not self-help and never ever patronizing), but I always appreciated her honesty and "straightford-ness." Somehow I found this book at the time I needed it the most, when I had given up all hope of getting better. I'm still not convinced I will, but this book has me rooting for the author. I am ever grateful and thankful it exists.

If you suffer from depression, just want to know more about it, or someone you love suffers from it, please READ THIS BOOK. Most of the time, in anthologies and even some "memoirs," I think: this person has no idea what they are talking about, I can't relate. Not here. This book is accessible and, I truly believe, helpful to anyone who reads it. Do yourself a favor and read this book. It is an asset to the field. And, subject not withstanding, it's a good book on its own. In other words, as a memoir it is interesting, entertaining, and you'll slow down your reading just to make it last longer (and to me, that's often the mark of a good book and an excellent storyteller). Best of luck to the author. And for anyone who reads this book because they "need" it, I get it. More importantly, so does the author. Good luck, then, to all of us.

Hope for those who suffer.......2006-08-11

I read this book shortly after it was released. My first thought was "Wow, someone understands how I feel." It is an excellent book for those around us who do not understand depression and the mental and physical problems that accompany it. I have read this book several times. I have also recommended it to many including my counselor. Tracy Thompson helped remove the stigma associated with mentai illness.

A great book about a personal struggle........2006-07-28

This is a great book about a personal struggle with depression and it might help those who love someone with this disease understand just a bit about the daily struggle and battle with the beast. It is a good title and you want to turn the page and see how things work out and you hope that it will work out, but you know that it doesn't always work out in the way in which you hope for.
