Exellent Book.......2004-01-06

I'm really impressed by Blake Gardner's new book Untamed Vermont for several reasons. First and foremost, Blake's photos of the Green Mountain State are outstanding. With his large format camera, he captures both grand scenic and intimate landscapes of Vermont's forests, mountains and lakes - everything from fiddleheads pushing themselves up through the oak leaves of a recently thawed ground to the sweeping vista of the Mountain State from atop Camel's Hump which adorns the cover of this book.

The second reason I like this book is that the photos are accompanied by some excellent text. Senator Patrick Leahy himself, whom has been a US Senator from Vermont since 1974, writes the Foreword. He not only takes this opportunity to boast of Vermont's "inspiring colored leaves in autumn, the rivers and lakes that dot the countryside, and the countless hiking trails that weave up and around the Green Mountains." He also takes this opportunity to tell of the importance of protecting Vermont's wilderness areas. "It is important to preserve Vermont's Wilderness for our enjoyment and that of generations to come," he writes. "Vermont's first-rate quality of life is partly due to the accessibility of open lands, mountains, lakes, and rivers. Being surrounded by nature offers a time for solitude and reflection, recreation and quality moments with loved ones." I can't agree more.

Most of the book's text is written by Tom Wessels. Tom is an ecologist, writer, and founding director of the Conservation Biology Program at Antioch New England Graduate School. Of course Tom's going to get points because Antioch is my wife's alma matter, but he also has written a beautiful narrative text which manages to add an additional layer of satisfaction to this great nature photography coffee-table book. The book is full of interesting facts about the Green Mountain State and it's ecology.

After gazing at the stunning vistas of nature transposed by Blake Gardner,I realized what a meditation these photos became for me. I was immersed in the depths of colors,shapes ,forms and the sensation of being there,standing next to this inspired artist,silent in the wonderment of the beauty and ancient stillnes that has been captured.

Stunning vision of Vermont.......2003-10-16

I have been visiting Vermont since the late 60s -- and every arrival is a fresh falling in love with its landscapes. Blake Gardner's new book, "Untamed Vermont," is an extraordinarily powerful evocation of the place at its best. It roams around and finds both the grand vistas and the quiet, small miraculous patches. Gardner's compositions are stunning. One of my favorites is a photo of wild grapes in the Big Branch Wilderness that has the serene lushness of a painted still life. Another one in the same woods: a portrait of a warbler's ground nest, half-hidden by ferns and browned leaves. He captures a forest coated with rime ice in the Camel's Hump area -- a wildly intricate, hypnotic vision. Though it's obvious that Gardner has hiked and climbed to some pretty remote spots to make these photographs, he also shows places that anyone can visit. If you're addicted to Vermont -- or wild lands anywhere -- you'll want to own this book.

Never again with footprint.......2003-01-23

Luckily we had a two year old lonely planet book about east Africa as well. The footprint is unreliable, maps are wrong, addresses are wrong, hotels non exist, ....
It was a disaster to travel with Footprint Uganda Handbook!!
Without the other east africa travle guide we would have been lost!

Best East Africa Travel Guide.......1999-12-13

I am planning a trip to Africa and have scoured many bookstores and shelves for THE BOOK. Footprints provides a wonderful book for those who really want to know EVERYTHING in preparation for their trip--from tipping guides to safari ratings to hotel guides to crime and embassy information--ad infinitim. This book is wealth of practical information and provides maps, history, culture and language information and even has a built in glossy color wildlife section on the flora and fauna one will encounter whilst in East Africa. Having a comprehensive guide in a small package (~6x4 in) is essential since travellers are limited to backage weight restrictions. (Books taken are thusly limited). This book will provides excellent reading material (as well as a travel resource) for all things East African before, during and after travel. Restaurants and hotels are rated by $ and quality, as are safari companies. Each page is double columned in small print, absolutely LOADED with essential information. The version offered for 1999 has a hardbinding, which is a plus. Unfortuantely, all post-1999 Footprint editions are now softcover. If you can take only one book, this is it. This one will be one of two books in my bag. The other one will be Hemingway's 'Green Hills of Africa.'

Writing e-mails has taken the place of forming friendships........2004-07-12

It is August 10th. Fourteen-year-old Chase Riley is online writing a heads-up newsletter to his old classmates in the big city of Columbus, Ohio. Chase is now living on a farm sixty miles away, so Chase's dad can have some peace and quiet to study and write after he comes home from his job at the lab. Peace and quiet are the buzzwords. Chase is feeling rebellious at having to be so far away from his friends, but his e-mails are still bright and funny.

It is not that quiet, Chase tells his buddies. The Cicadas in the daytime and the bullfrogs at night make ear-splitting noises. Is this what adults call "the joy of country living?" He knows that his two dogs are in heaven, free to run loose and chase anything that excites them. Unfortunately, they are also learning about skunks and tomato juice baths --- a bitter lesson. Even Chase smelled of skunk for awhile!

Then there is the matter of making new friends. Chase keeps to himself when school starts and spends his time writing e-mails to his newsletter group and his sister, Mallory, at Kent State. He doesn't seem to be settling in to his new school environment, and the school guidance counselor is becoming worried. For Chase, writing e-mails has taken the place of forming friendships.

I hope that most young readers will find the main character, Chase Riley, cool. He is an amazingly talented fourteen-year-old with obvious gifts in writing and computer literacy. His intelligence, fierce independence, and wry humor will help him to handle the adjustment of leaving the city for the country, making new friends, and coping with the other events in life's journey.

GREAT BOOK!!!!!.......2002-12-14

Here we are, Chase Riley (e-mail alias ChaseR), 14, moves 60 miles away from hometown Colombus to live hours from who-knows-where & five minutes from your neighbors (I'm five seconds away, if you're slow). His 90-acre land is being plagues by cicadias, mammoth bugs that come out once every 17 years. His e-mails to friends are often halarious, &, with Rosen's good writing skills, you, the reader, can easily dictate what life is like in the Riley house.

I have to admit, some of his newletters (letters in newspaper-like form to a wide selection of addresses) are HALARIOUS!!! I'm just wondering is that BEAVER CREEK BEACON stuff is true.

Although some of the stuff is funny, the actual plot isn't very exciting. I don't know how much more exciting it could get, given that the book was written in e-mails. That, however doesn't take away from the book's overall good-ness. (in my opinion)

Among other things, you can learn cool smileys.

An endearing portrait of youth culture and a great read..........2002-08-03

I too disagree with the Publisher's Weekly review of this book. I am a middle school educator. I know my students well, and this qualifies me to say that this book does a wonderful job of representing the adolescent mind. It is unfortunate that the reviewer from Publisher's Weekly disparages the impact of e-mail on young lives and fails to recognize its effectiveness in telling a unique story. E-mail is second only to verbalizing for communication (and in many cases, e-mail allows the expression of what cannot be communicated verbally). Therefore, the format of this novel WORKS. Young people will not only relate well to the novel's format, but they will enjoy reading the funny, brief, sometimes emotional chapters. This would be an especially effective book for resistant or struggling readers, as it is extremely engaging and easy to identify with.

The protagonist is endearing and his inner struggle is realistically portrayed. I believe that adolescents will relate to Chase's challenges, especially his feeling of isolation being so far from his friends and from what is familiar to him. I believe too that Chase's idealism is something that young readers will recognize as a quality that they share.

One of the most interesting aspects of this novel is its brilliance in convincingly representing one side of the conflict (the anti-hunting side), then putting the reader "into the shoes" of someone on the other side (the pro-hunting side). This sets up a situation where readers must examine their own stance on the issue, then weigh and evaluate both sides, as Chase (the protagonist) does. This process is an important developmental step for young people, one that they will be faced with throughout their lives. It is important for adolescents to have experiences that develop their ability to look at both sides of an issue and make informed choices for their own actions. The engaging story will lead readers into this learning process, leaving them with a more fully developed ability to look at similar difficult issues from a variety of perspectives. This also sets up a great forum for classroom discussion.

I am 34 years old and a professional, yet I enjoyed this book greatly. I read it to consider its inclusion in a unit I am designing for my classroom. I am looking forward to sharing this book with my students in the fall, and I hope that many other educators will do the same.

I don't exactly agree with the Publisher's Weekly review of this book, I thought the email form worked great. It was an inventive and dynamic way to express the mindset of a city kid readjusting to a rural environment. I found a review of this book in The Horn Book and I thought they put it nicely: "The book's email format work well, emphasizing the isolation and loneliness of a contemporary computer kid transplanted into a rustic, old-fashioned setting." At the heart of the book, though, is the conflict between us and nature, raising questions about what rights we have to exploit our surroundings. It is for this reason that I think this is an important book for kids to read, both city-slicker and rural alike.

This was a great read.

Using an unusual but effective narrative style, Rosen captures, in a series of emails, his characters and settings perfectly. From the way people in the rural midwest wave by lifting one finger off the steering wheel to the sudden and shocking blast of a 12-guage shotgun, the details make this book engagingly real.

Having moved from the city to the country, Chase's entire world changes. Where he once had friends, he now has only thousands of ciacadas (the emoticon representing the cicadas is the worth the cost of the book in and of itself). But what bothers him most about his new life is the hunting that goes on, particularly after one of his dogs is shot. The hunting debate becomes the central issue of the story, and Rosen explores it with tremendous wit and heart, asking all the right questions and never offering easy answers.

With complex and charming characters, a fascinating issue explored with great sensitivity, and some of the funniest emoticons I've ever seen, this one will grab your interest--and keep it.

easy to read but disappointing.......2001-09-27

I picked up this book as a preparation for the CLEP marketing exam. While it is easy to read, the layout is cluttered and distracting. The authors give a rah-rah treatment to e-commerce, presenting multiple .com case studies throughout the book (each chapter begins with an internet site and description).

It is clear that the authors were infatuated with the so-called "new economy," and the book suffers a lot as a result. Using it as a primer is tiring, as you have to separate the essentials of marketing from the e-commerce cheerleading.

The publisher's website does have quizzes to test on the material, which I like, but overall, I was still somewhat disappointed.

Easy to read, but a little disappointing.......2001-09-24

I purchased this book as a primer on Marketing, as a preparatory resource for the CLEP Principles of Marketing exam (3 semester hours). The book effectively presents the basic terms and ideas in an airy, easy to read manner. Also, the book's website contains quizzes that help reinforce the information, which is greatly appreciated.

However, I was somewhat disenchanted with the content which reaches for a "futuristic" flavor and misses something in the process. In my opinion, the book concentrates too heavily on .com companies (some of which are now bankrupt and defunct) and gives an overall rah-rah treatment towards e-commerce. Anecdotes abound and are used as filler in the main text, instead of informational sidebars. Every chapter is introduced with another website URL emblazoned across the top of the page in a putrid yellow color.

Thankfully, the authors did include a paragraph or two dissuading the reader from using SPAM (unsolicited email marketing), but it was a footnote in an otherwise verbose volume. I was somewhat offended that from the context of those paragraphs, and an anecdote about one company's 12% response rate (versus 1% for direct mail) which is misleading and would probably leave marketing students thinking that spam was effective.

For what I purchased the book for, it accomplishes the goals, albeit in a verbose manner.

I used this book as an introduction to marketing at the School of Management at Syracuse University. I found the to be thought out well, layed out in a logical format and it was current with all information. It was more interesting than most text books.

Throughout the book, I have found numerous typographic errors, and poor design and layout. The "real-world" examples of different issues and topics are an asset to the text, and save it from being COMPLETELY worthless. The index is not comprehensive. and when looking for clarification of terms, it is virtually useless.

Mr. Jefferson was a brilliant man. I enjoy reading his works and appreciate this opportunity to gain insight into his logic and thought process as it evolved throughout his lifetime. His intellectualism and that eternal curiosity about his world place him head and shoulders above those men of his time. He bought Louisiana upon the suggestion of Thomas Paine and our nation spread westward as a result. He no doubt made major contributions towards the creation and founding of this nation. Thousands of accolades for his brilliance and achievements are in order. I'm not putting him on a pedestal, there was a dark side. He did own slaves. He was however in many ways morally and intellectually bound by the time he lived in. His thoughts regarding the mentality of slaves scream racism. His solution was to abolish slavery and export them back to Africa. He believed most would never fit in to American culture based on their resentments against enslavement and the racism they endured from white society at the time. His letters to American Indians in which he addressed them as "My Children" and assured them of his eternal blessings belied the fact that their lands were being taken away from them and they were being forced to be assimilated or slaughtered. He did not foresee the industrialization of America and wanted to leave manufacturing to the Europeans to preserve the American way of life. In short, Mr. Jefferson was all too human, who no doubt would be appalled at the antics of modern day Republicans and Democrats.

I have this book (I checked the IBSN#). It's 32 pages of quotes, and that's it. No papers, no index, etc. I think the other customer reviews are innacurate in that they are probably about an entirely different book.

So about *THIS* book, I love it. It's got the well-known quotes like "Governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed." and lesser-known quotes like "When you reach the end of your rope, tie a knot in it and hang on."

It's not a scholarly work. It doesn't have citations to explain where the quotes came from, but it was exactly what I was looking for.

If you are a fan of Liberty, this book is a must buy.

What a difference of few decades make. When I was a youngster the founders were all revered and taught in school. Nowadays, they are almost ignored and condemned for not conforming to our modern view of morality. Of course, the present view is both arrogant and ignorant because we assume that future generations will believe as we do and lacks the humility to realize that the human condition is fraught with weakness and sin as well as triumph and wisdom.

Thomas Jefferson was one of the most remarkable men this country or any country has ever produced. All you need do is sample these writings and you will begin to understand the powers of his mind, the charisma he manifested, the range of his interests, and the paradoxical foibles as well. The writings included here are his autobiography, his Notes on Virginia, all kinds of essays, letters, speeches, and selected other papers.

He writes of philosophy, English prosody, natural history, political observations, the history of the Founding, theological beliefs, and many other topics. Both of his inaugural addresses are included as well has his notices to Congress (what we now call State of the Union Addresses used to be handled in a letter). There are also letters to Indian tribes that are quite interesting.

The idea that the Indian tribes would want to remain as they were seemed a mistaken to notion to Jefferson and his contemporaries. They needed to understand that realities of their world had changed forever and they had great opportunities for improving their lives (as he saw it). Their rejection of overtures to assimilate seemed evidence of an imprisoned mind rather than what we would call a "lifestyle choice".

This is another of the great volumes from the Library of America. It includes a chronology of Jefferson's life, great notes on the texts included, and an index.

Something you really should have on your shelf of American History and our Founding.

This edition of Jefferson's writings is an excellent comrehensive collection. Edited by Jefferson biographer Merrill Peterson this volume is a treasure.

Wow! This is not just your normal big photo book to set on the coffee table for an occasional browse through. This is a book to savor, page by page, slowly and with thoughtful contemplation of the stunning images presented both by the photographers and the author. From the first paragraphs of the introduction, I realized this book offers an unusual journey, as the author explains, in elegant prose, his reasoning for taking the reader UP the Colorado River rather than down. Here is a book worthy of being used as a reference in any historical geography or geology class, yet read from cover to cover for its literary appeal. Even those who have not visited the Grand Canyon in person will gain an awesome appreciation for this wonder of nature by traveling with the author and photographers through the pages of this masterpiece.
