The book is "The Interviewers Handbook"
I purchased this book to help me in future interviews, the content goes over the basics in a HR environment. Conducting Interviews, Salary etc... There is a section for Interview's some of the content goes over eye contact where the potential candidate look while answering the questions. The Author states somewhere that women have a better gut Instinct than men when it comes to interviewing potential interviewee. This has to be total %$$&. It has some of the content I was looking for just not as much.

"an area where the earth and its community of life are untrammeled by man, where man himself is a visitor who does not remain." — 1964 Wilderness Act

In this thoughtful assessment of wilderness management policy and practice, geographer Gundars Rudzitis explores the ongoing conflicts over the protection/exploitation of our western wilderness areas. He separates the romantic myth of the Wild West from past and present realities, and considers the influence of the traditional self-image of the Westerner on wilderness management policy. Rudzitis also explores the role of Native Americans and what their traditions can teach us about wilderness management.

While clearly on the side of preservation—he rails against the practice of placing wilderness areas in the care of government agencies that also promote the interests of the corporate resource industries—Professor Rudzitis approaches the subject with a scientist's devotion to the facts. He assesses crucial issues evenhandedly and offers honest appraisals of new and emerging land management trends, including ecosystem management and the privatization of public lands. He calls for the dramatic and controversial changes necessary to protect our wilderness heritage.

Wilderness and the Changing American West is essential reading for public policymakers; land management, wildlife, park and recreation, and economic development officials; environmentalists; and everyone interested in the preservation and/or use of this precious national treasure.

            Book Description

Some think it's a job, but when we join an organization, we enter a new world with its own culture, language, behavior and taboos. Peddy, who prospered in the corporate jungle for 19 years, explains this world to us, through the story of Sandra, a young woman who is coached by Jack, a knowledgeable "insider." Using the jungle tribe as a metaphor for organizations, Jack debunks the "myth of hard work" as the key to success, instead helping Sandra learn and apply over 125 unspoken rules of the jungle to every day work life.

5 out of 5 stars A Unique and Informative Book that also Entertains.......1999-07-26

This book is so different from others in its genre! It is both captivating and informative, not boring and stuffy. It is not a "laundry list" of do's and don'ts, but actually explains WHY through characters and stories that anyone can relate to. The story within the story is quite amazing in the way it relates to today's business climate. I highly recommend this book as a must read for anyone who wants to understand how things work, and get ahead, in any organization.

5 out of 5 stars Tojo: misunderstood or monster.......2007-07-18

I had read an earlier biography some years ago, and was looking for it when I came across this volume. A good, factual account of Tojo's rise to power, it also covers the political situation within the Japanese military leading up to, and during WW2. It is far from an apology, being instead a well constructed insight into a period many Japanese tend to ignore, and many foreigners would rather forget. Tojo rose to power in no small part due to his abilities as an organiser, and through his position in the Kwangtung Army. However, the book offers the opinion that he was as much a victim of the flows of policy as an instigator, and suggests he was of limited intelligence. Notwithstanding, he was the prime orchestrator of many Japanese atrocities, and was deservedly hung as a war criminal.

It provides insights into Japanese Strategic thinking and planning, and the machinations behind the scenes. A good read for those interested in this controversial period, and most certainly not revisionist.

4 out of 5 stars A biography of the spokesman for the militarists of Japan........2003-09-29

Hoyt does a good job detailing the political life of the wartime leader of Japan. As one of the previous reviewers noted, there is little personal information on Tojo here. What is detailed is the struggle for the control of Japan from 1936-1945. Tojo came out on top four months prior to Pearl Harbor. He was not completely to blame for what happened in Japan and her conquered territories, but his guilt was great. Hoyt does a good job of detailing why Hirohito was less to blame for the outcome of the war.
Tojo was basically a spokeman for the Generals of the Army who guided the country from the early thirties. He was the son of a samarai who made the transition to the Army. Hirohito's rule was basically like the shogun ruled Japan. The Generals had the veto power over all decisions of the government. The Emperor participated very little in the decisions. Tojo was the spokesman who ultimately pushed all contenders to the side. In 1944, he was deposed himself.
Hoyt tackles some serious issues in this book such as the mistreatment of prisoners of war(POWs) and European civilians, the war of conquest in China, and the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity League. This book may not be the leading authority on Tojo or what happened in military Japan, but it is a great summary of some difficult history.

2 out of 5 stars Reasonable overview, but could have been much better.......2003-07-16

Hoyt's book provides an acceptable overview of a section of Tojo's life, but the book suffers because it does not delve deeper. Hoyt fails to provide any explanation as to why Tojo developed his beliefs or why he acted as he did. For example, there is no discussion of Tojo's childhood, and very little information regarding his family life. While these need not be key to Tojo's biography, such facts might have provided more insight into the man.

Hoyt also seems driven to prove that Hirohito was not responsible for the war; in fact, he begins the book commenting on a BBC documentary which argued that Hirohito was a war criminal. Placing this view at the beginning of the book casts doubt on everything that follows, making the reader wonder if the author is attempting to shift blame to Tojo in order to exonerate Hirohito.

              5 out of 5 stars Tojo-and the Japanese Culture.......2002-09-16

              Great Book, Interesting Man
I find it funny that to THIS DAY, people still have the nerve to consider men like this admirable or interesting. This whole country, as well as Tojo were the most cruel, racist, and inhumane people known to man. I hate to totally lay all this blame on Tojo himself but rather the whole country of Japan. Many people aren't even allowed to go into their chatrooms on the net as I type this review. Many times when visiting their country you can try to eat or go into a bar and if you are white they will immediately intervene telling you "This is a Private Club" and not let you enter because of the color of your skin. I'm not making this up. To me they seem to be the most racist people in the world. Of course this is rarely pointed out on television.

In my opinion the Nazis got many of their codes and policies from these people. I think the Nazis were highly influenced in how in conducted things in relation to the Japanese people.

In a nutshell I don't see why people like this are considered any different than Hitler. Of course, the Jewish community was unaffected by the Japanese so therefore you don't hear about it as often. (Just my opinion)

In the eyes of the Japanese, you're either one of two things, Japanese or Gai-Jin meaning that you're nothing more than a barbarian. That crosses all religions, races, and genders.

The things this country beliefs are shocking, and the public should be made aware of how they are.

For some unknown reason in today's society, a group of people who're not caucasian are often made to look a bit romantic and intriguing when they display this form of violence. Yet Germany because they're like you and I are considered monsters. This troubles me. There's not a difference.

I rate this book 5 stars, yes it's very good, but it's very shocking to me how people don't consider this culture barbaric and cruel. The Jewish community of all people usually seem very in awe of the Asian culture while these people are simply the most racist people on the planet. This is not just because we're different than the east, the Japanese feel the same way about their surrounding countries. As far as the Japanese society is concerned, if you're Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, etc., you might has well be smothered at birth.

These people fight dogs, fight horses, beat up their women and children, pedophilia was legal until 95. If any country in this world were similar in their behavior and IF they were white, they'd be shunned by everyone.

I know this is off subject, and I have no problem with the author. However many people who want to study this culture and read many books about Japan need to be aware of the their REAL culture and history. There's not much talk about it.

This man isn't too far from the modern day Japense citizen. Many will feel I'm wrong but I feel this needs to be put out there for people looking to learn the history of Japan.

4 out of 5 stars Absorbing & Provocative Look At Imperial Japan's Bad Boy!.......2000-07-19

It is a curious truth that while much is popularly known about Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, and other European "bad boy" potentates, little if anything is popularly known about the architect and antagonist of the Japanese military state, Hideki Tojo. Yet he was Japan's premier for the greater part of World War Two, the front man for the militarists who had seized real control of the government in the mid 1930s. Unlike either Hitler or Mussolini, Tojo did not escape the judgment of the victorious allies, for he was one of the relatively few Japanese tried for war crimes after the war, and was hanged in disgrace and humiliation. This, then, is an absorbing story of the ultimate true believer hung on the petard of his own fanaticism.

Renowned historian Edwin P. Hoyt does an admirable job detailing the rise and corruption of this enigmatic and often phlegmatic leader, a modern day samurai who simply did not understand the tenor of his times, and who was instrumental in ushering Japan into a disastrous and suicidal conflict with the United States, even though a number of authorities with Japan such as Yamamoto warned an all-out war with the Americans would not likely be successful. Hoyt draws from an impressive array of little known documents from Japanese military archives, and from a number of recorded interviews with Japanese-American guards who came to know Tojo quite well during his captivity and trial at the infamous Sagumo Prison just outside Tokyo.

Hoyt takes incredible care detailing Tojo's rapid rise to become the outspoken and imperious front-man for the militarists within the Army, those young but career-oriented officers seeking the rapid expansion of the burgeoning Japanese empire throughout Asia to fulfill what they felt to be Japan's destiny based on their own racist and fascist notions about the Japanese being a master race naturally destined to rule their part of the world. Hoyt describes the early successes in the first few months of the war, when Tojo's stock was rising and his prestige was rising as well. The book also details his hopes and tentative operational plans regarding an eventual invasion of the American mainland, and this more than anything indicates just how provincial and misinformed he was regarding the power, strengths, and capabilities of his opponents.

Soon, however, the victories turned to defeats, and in a stunning string of setbacks and losses the course of the war changed fatefully, as did Japan's dreams of empire and future fortune. Eventually all this caught up with Tojo, and he was forced from power in the summer of 1944. Eventually, he was arrested by the Allies, tried, and hanged. This is an provocative look at a man who balanced the surging forces of the Army, Navy and civil authorities during the war, but who profoundly and fatefully misunderstood the nature of the forces of the 20th century, and so was personally responsible for the death of millions of combatants and noncombatants, and who by prosecuting the war in such a savage way also played a key role in bringing the sting of the Allies wrath home to the people to Japan. I recommend this book for anyone interested in learning more about this tragic and misguided figure that was so instrumental in the unfolding of the Pacific part of the Second World War.

              Book Description

Strings is an extraordinary odyssey told with sensitive passion by John Robbins, former University professor, peace activist, Buddhist monk and current marathon runner. The book, a medical narrative full of human drama and rare suspense is packed with keen insights and subtle, but profound teachings on the human condition. Robbins uses his training as a professional historian to piece together a fantastic thirty-six hours in which a liver is found a thousand miles away, a plane chartered and a medical team assembled to attempt a-never-before-successful liver transplant on a Hepatitis B patient. He describes in a suspense-packed narrative an 18 hour operation and a six month hospitalization in which he learned how to live again.

But this book is much more than an account of a liver transplant. It's a page turning medical thriller in the tradition of a Michael Crichton novel with the narrative and teaching power of Normal Cousins. It's an unusually fast paced, but richly detailed account. Despite knowing that Robbins survived the ordeal, the reader inevitably becomes caught up in the suspense of the transplant process. Drawing upon his years spent as a Buddhist monk, Robbins has created a spiritual teaching classic for the nineties in the sixties tradition of Robert Pirsig's Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I knew John and this was his story........1999-06-11

It was with great saddness that I recently learned of the passing of Dr. John Robbins from one of his Thai friends.

I knew John in Bangkok prior to his illness and saw him in Washington, D.C. both while he was waiting for the transplant and later after he received it. My last conversation with him was at the time his book was published and he was so excited by the possibilities.

John's use of the Buddhist "stings" to hold the book together is wonderful. His "rat-a-tat" writing style in describing the fast pace of medical events is attention-getting.

John changed the world a bit with his book. I regret I will not be able to tell him how much it meant to me.

5 out of 5 stars This book is the best non-fiction book I have ever read.......1998-07-27

Mr. Robbins takes the reader, grabs them quickly, and doesn't let go until the end. You know he survives his ordeal, but you are still in tears in the middle wondering "is he going to make it?"

Thanks for writing this valuable book.

5 out of 5 stars An inpiring near death story about "effortless effort"........1998-07-16

John Robbins uses a mix of Buddhaism and basketball (effortless effort) to tell how he survived and prospered after a near death experience. Part medical thriller and part spiritual exploration, he tells his story of surviving a liver transplant. His recollections about his surgeon alone are worth the read. A very good writer, he tells his story without without self-pity or fatalism. Inspiring is perhaps an over-used word in book reviews, but you will agree it applies to Strings.

5 out of 5 stars A tango between the protagonists of Coma and D.O.A.!.......1998-07-13

This is a nonfiction book that baby boomers facing health crises--their own or their parents'--should read. But this tale of miraculous recovery from life-threatening illness feels more like a Vonnegut novel than the standard human interest story you might expect.

It cuts elegantly between the tense and fast-paced action of a quite miraculous liver transplant and sophisticated spiritual and philosophical questions about ethical issues in life and medicine. There is a wonderful section that presents the disorientation of a type A personality in a medical crisis--mental confusion due to prolonged illness, lack of control, medical complications, frustration at the slow pace of recovery--and reads like a primer for 50-somethings who are facing their first serious illness or surgery or trying to understand the growing frailty and increasing health care needs of their aging parents.

It weaves the varied and sometimes conflicting perspectives of patient, family, and med! ! ical professionals into the most complete picture of a modern medical crisis I've seen.

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating account of one man's spiritual journey........1998-07-09

This book demonstrates that Robbins, better than most, understands the tentative hold we have on life, and how quickly, and unexpectedly, it can slip away. Dr. Robbins description of his near death experience, his subsequent recovery, and the personal growth both provoked, is a truly remarkable piece of writing. Anyone seeking to understand the connection between spirituality, and catastrophic life events, will find this a must read.

                Book Description

The Rants, Raves & Thoughts of Slobodan Milosevic is the latest title in a brand new series of thoughtful, and thought-provoking titles dealing with some of the less appealing dictators and terrorists of our time. The goals and inspirations of this new series on the modern world's terrorists and dictators is to explain, in their own words and in the words of others, what makes them so ruthless. The books demonstrate what a talented group of free-thinking writers and graphic designers can do with access to a database of information and a limitless imagination about how to let the words of these powerful, psychotic people reveal who they are, what they believe and what they hope to achieve. The Rants, Raves & Thoughts of Slobodan Milosevic lets you step inside the head of this Yugoslavian dictator, from his views on NATO, Serbia, his trial, and America.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent and moving.......2002-06-25

This books represents one of the finest collections of essays I have ever read. Incredibly moving and filled with the intense passion of a man dying and yet gripped by life, this book has blown me away every time I've read it -- and that's been several times. I'm not sure which essay I like best but at the moment "My Priests" stands out, as it certainly ties in to certain news regarding the Catholic clergy. I wonder what Paul Monette would have had to say about it. Absolutely a must read for anyone with a feeling heart.

                4 out of 5 stars Easily Monette's best book.......1998-09-25

"Last Watch of the Night" gets unjustly forgotten in the light of Monette's more famous "Borrowed Time" and "Becoming a Man," but this collection of essays is a better book than either of them. This is what should have been up for the National Book Award, not "Becoming a Man."

The flaws in the book: some of the essays, especially near the end, seem to drift, and are not particularly engaging. These include the soporific "Sleeping Under a Tree." Also, Monette's observations about graves of famous people in "3275" are not even close to as important and insightful as his look at his lovers' and friends' plots.

However, the majority of the book shines true. Alternately bitter, angry, hopeful, and amazed, Monette's words have tremendous emotional force. He is at his best in "The Politics of Silence" and "My Priests," sometimes combining all these emotions in a single paragraph. He sees the dying all around, but can still find glimmers of hope in the conduct of those fighting AIDS. His depictions of the "last watch of the night," where he cares for his sick lover, are heart-breaking.

Although Monette does tend to go off on rages or streaks of uncontained sentimentality, something which marred some otherwise stellar poetry in his book "Love Alone," most often he controls his use of language to the extent where he is able to use forceful emotional passages without drowning his readers. He does this especially well in his essay about his lover's dog, "Puck."

"Last Watch of the Night" stands with his volume of poetry, "Love Alone" and non-fiction, "Borrowed Time," as essential texts of both Paul Monette and the AIDS crisis.

5 out of 5 stars Words to *live* by!.......1998-03-27

Despite and perhaps *because* of the fact that this book is written by someone in the midst of a life or death struggle with AIDS, this book is one of the most moving odes to *life* I have ever come across. From meditations on the importance (or lack thereof) of possessions to thoughts on death and dying, Monette presents a worldview, philosophy, and perspective that is rich and wise. The language he employs is beautiful, poetic, precise, serene... amazing. Some of the topics covered are disturbing and he does speak some angry words, but every one of them is just and every one of them is life-affirming.
