            <>

Part of the “Reacting to the Past” series, this text consists of a game in which students are assigned roles, informed by classic texts, set in a particular moment of intellectual and social ferment. The issues range from the nature of faith and the meaning of the Bible to the scientific principles and methods as advanced by Copernicus, Tycho Brahe, Giordano Bruno, and Galileo. The game includes several optional science labs in optics and astronomy.

The Trial of Galileo shows the confrontation between Copernicanism, as brilliantly propounded by Galileo, and the elegant cosmology of Aristotle, as defended energetically by conservatives within the Inquisition.

                Book Description

The artist John Taylor has been attracted all his life to the luminous beauty and extraordinary vitality of the Chesapeake Bay. He has won wide acclaim for his paintings of the region's wildlife and landscape. Taylor not only draws and paints the Bay but for years has kept a journal recording a naturalist's observations through an artist's eye. In Chesapeake Spring he gathers his paintings and writings into a single record, giving us an engaging portrait of the Bay from late December through June in all its splendor and variety. "In Chesapeake latitudes," writes Taylor, "the first day of winter might well count as the first day of spring. Already there are indications of an awakening, a renewal, despite the extreme cold or deep snow that is to come."

A unique blend of weather, water, and foliage gives the Chesapeake not only an unusually long spring, but a breathtakingly beautiful one. In sixty-five color paintings, Taylor reveals the signs of spring that emerge as early as the winter solstice, as soon as days begin to lengthen. He shows the bolder contrasts of color and texture that appear in late winter as life returns to the landscape. And he captures the exuberance of the Chesapeake spring in all its glory -- bursts of color on branch and stem, layers of clouds reflecting the warming sun, wave upon wave of birds returning to their homes, and the host of other animals that make the Bay and its watershed their home.

Following the progress of the season at sites throughout the region, Taylor's journal entries complement his paintings and describe each scene with a naturalist's insight and an artist's eye for detail. From bald eagles gliding over West River to mud turtles crawling the sandy roads near Hill's Bridge, from ospreys and owls to alewives and fiddler crabs, Taylor's Chesapeake is a place of ceaseless inspiration. In paintings and words, he offers us a charming account of the emerging wonders of a typical Chesapeake spring. But here, too, is a lifetime of springs -- the eloquent expression of one man's ties to a place he loves and his dedication to recording its beauty.

                From Chesapeake Spring:

"This is a book about convergence, about the coming together of a particular time and a special place. The time is spring... The place is the Chesapeake Bay, an especially favored body of water known for its beauty and bounty." -- for the Introduction

"The sun had the afternoon sky to itself but for a lone swirl of high cloud, pale against the deep azure. The river rested unruffled, touched by the same blue. Across its broad reaches, near the far shore, a raft of ducks relaxed, most of them sleeping, heads tucked into back feathers." -- West River, December 26

"It grew cold last night, well below freezing, and I had expected the little blue speedwell to be closed or shriveled. But this morning the delicate flowers were still open, made even lovelier by a coating of frosty rime." -- Beverly Beach County Park, February 12

"The day passed without a cloud. The temperature reached 70 degrees, rousing the spring peepers to a concert that lasted well into the night. Above their babel, I could hear the calls of old squaws migrating in the darkness." -- Turkey Point, March 13

"Dark clouds tumbled low across the morning sky, following a windy front that had brought rain most of the night. Wraiths of driven mist veiled the river shore, blending the yellowish haze of willow with the tawny red of maple. Other bankside vegetation merged in a formless mass of pastel green." -- Hill's Bridge, April 15

"A monster snapping turtle, its head the size of a baseball, blocked a sandy road. I would have thought it the granddaddy of all snapping turtles, except that it was a mama. She had apparently lumbered up from the marsh to lay her eggs in the soft mud of a drying puddle." -- Deal Island, May 11

"White flecks against the green grasses, the gulls showed little concern as our small boat neared shore. Quite suspicious, however, were the half dozen oystercatchers that rushed out to greet us with raucous complaint. Clownish in appearance, with oversized scarlet bills, pink feet, and bold black and white plumage, they were nevertheless quite serious in their intent. They mobbed us as fearlessly as they would a passing hawk." -- Spring Island, June 20

Tiernay Markowitz, pseudonym Tiernay West, is an adventurer. She moves with the stealth of a great cat of the African plains and can track a bicycle on dry pavement. She has no use for ballet, fancy dresses, her mother's new--and frankly very dull--boyfriend or his nerdy, computer obsessed son, Kevin. When Tiernay catches wind of possible buried treasure in her very own town, she's on the case. Little does she know where this will lead--was running for her life, scaling cliffs in the middle of the night, or getting trapped underground really part of the plan?

Tiernay West, whose business card reads: "Professional Adventurer," isn't your average girl. When she hears about a mystery in her hometown, she's on the case, even if she would rather be riding the Orient Express or searching for a crumbling scroll in the lost library of Alexandria. Because when you begin an adventure, "you have to start somewhere." Indeed. With her sidekick, allergy-ridden Kevin (the son of her mother's boyfriend), Tiernay solves the mystery her way. This is a very funny book, about a girl whose imaginative inner life swamps her real one, and her determination to live on her own terms.

Fans of the Sammy Keyes series should love this one, and I hope to see more of Tiernay's adventures in print!

4 out of 5 stars Great fun for younger readers.......2006-05-05

Tiernay West is a marvelous character, overflowing with imagination, courage, and a love of adventure. Her sidekick in this adventure, Kevin, is your normal nerd-in-training, more comfortable with computers than a search for gold. Together they make a good team, cracking a mystery hundreds of years old even though the adults hardly even notice that there is a mystery. Tiernay's total faith in herself as an adventurer carries her through when anyone else would give up and go home to bed.

The best thing about this book, though, is its humor. I loved Tiernay's watch, given to her by her divorced, adventurer father. It shows the time in different cities around the world, and she's always reporting the time in Kabul or Toronto or Singapore, rather than in her home town. That's suits her just fine, because she lives more in her imagination than in the real world. The humor isn't mean; it doesn't make fun of anyone, and that's the best (and hardest) humor there is.

The great characters and humor easily carry the reader through a conclusion that is a bit pat and coincidental. All in all, though, a recommended read!

This is truly a fine investigation into the design, construction, and experience of sales environments -- not just in the physical world, but also in the virtual worlds of TV, radio, print media, and the Internet. Sherry is an anthropologist who, together with the other contributors, paints a complex portrait of what it means to create a sales environment, what it means to experience one, and how the two processes relate. No marketing ace or designer can afford to do without Sevicescapes!

                                          Book Description

In 1939 there were ten million Jews in Europe. After Hitler there were four million. Today in 1996 there are under two million. On current projections the Jews will become virtually extinct as a significant element in European society over the course of the twenty-first century. Now, in the first comprehensive social and political history of the experience and fate of European Jews during the last fifty years, Bernard Wasserstein sheds light on the reasons for this dire demographic projection.

Drawing on a rich variety of sources, many hitherto unpublished, Wasserstein begins with the painful years of liberation after World War II when Jews tried to recover from the destruction of their people and communities, then traces the Jewish experience in Eastern and Western Europe in different national and ideological contexts. His important and original inquiry covers the impact on Jews of postwar reconstruction, Soviet occupation, the Cold War, and the collapse of communism. These, combined with the memory of Nazi genocide, the persistence of antisemitism, the development of Israel, and the Middle East conflicts, shaped the history of European Jewry in the second half of the twentieth century.

With exceptional eloquence and conviction, Vanishing Diaspora argues that survival for European Jews ultimately will depend on choices they themselves make to reverse trends. They have an alarmingly imbalanced death-to-birth ratio, and many have jettisoned religious observance in the spirit of a secular Europe, losing their cultural distinctiveness as well as their numbers. This often painful story of destruction, irreparable loss, and the shattering of ties thus serves as a wake-up call and a dramatic warning.

                                                Book Description

People's basic values are shaped by major changes in environmental conditions, such as scarcity of resources and hostility in the political and socioeconomic system. Based on the extensive research of the International Consortium for Management Studies, this work examines the values and perceptions of a variety of issues in eight countries with different socioeconomic and political systems. Cultural, family, and workplace values are among some of the critical issues discussed. A sequel to Cross-Cultural Analysis of Values and Political Economy Issues (Praeger, 1994), specialists in developmental, regional, and political economics will find this a timely contribution to understanding emerging developments in diverse cultures.

The first part of the work deals with definition of terms and theories that are to be used in the work. The second part of the work deals with individual representative countries in Europe and Latin America, and the third part of the work describes future work needed in the area.

3 out of 5 stars Great info if you can find it........2007-07-30

The book contains a lot of information. It has a lot of good pictures of plants and animals found in the Southeastern States. The info is difficult to access because not all entries a listed in the index. If you are willing to read the entire book you will gain much. But if you want to use it to identify animals and plants you have seen you have to go through each section page by page. A little intelligent thought about providing a proper index would have helped greatly.

This is the BEST nature guide I have found for the southeast, but unfortunately that is not saying much. I have been spoiled by the wealth of naturalist and natural history books available for all different parts of the west, books which not only tell you how to ID a species, but which also give you enough information to feel like you know it afterwards.

I take young people on wilderness trips for a living, and enjoy sharing with them my love of nature. I especially enjoy introducing them to members of the natural community, neighbors they have had all their lives but probably have never taken time to become aquainted with. I grew up in the southeast, before heading west in search of adventure. Now I am back, working with at-risk and adjudicated youth, taking them on canoe paddles in old cypress swamps and along inter-coastal waterways. I normally find a variety of great books to take on trips for my kids to consult when they spot something new. But here in my old stomping grounds, this is the best I could come up with.

The National Audubon guides are great for covering a wide range of information, from weather to constellations to identifying plants and animals. But they won't tell you much of anything about those plants and animals. I know there are naturalists and writers in the south who can do better. Would love to find them (in print) someday soon.

5 out of 5 stars The best resource for nature walks.......2005-04-15

We do nature walks for homeschooling, and I have to say this is the best guide to carry with you. It covers so many plants, animals, reptiles that are easy to find and identfy. The descriptions are concise and informative. I do think it's best to have other books at home for looking up more detailed info at home (or use the internet).

4 out of 5 stars Probably the Best All-Around Field Guide for the South.......2002-05-29

I live out of this book. A must for anyone going outdoors in the South. I continue to impress my friends with the knowledge I retain from this book. If you are packing on the trail this is the book for you. Don't carry 10 different books. This is the only one you need.

5 out of 5 stars nifty, all encompassing field guide for the not so patient.......2000-05-12

This field guid is really easy to extract information from. My sister-inlaw, who lives on a boat traveling all around the southeastern states, absconded with mine and I was left in the dark. I own many audubon field guides but I truely like the format of this one because all aspects are under one cover. It makes my pack much lighter! Alden and Nelson do a wonderful job for introducing the newcomer to the southern states. Thank you, JE Rifkin
