Young adult fiction with gay or lesbian characters most often focuses on the emotional or social aspects of coming out. In a world in which gay teens have little support of visibility this focus is a good thing. But Whistle Me Home deals with gayness from another perspective. Noli, a smart, boyish teenage girl has fallen in love with T. J., the new boy at school. Cute, sensitive, and attentive, T. J. appears to be her soul mate, but much to Noli's dismay their intense relationship never becomes sexual. When T. J. finally confesses his homosexuality to her, Noli is both furious and crushed. Whistle Me Home deals carefully with people's secrets as well as with the pain that can be caused by unfulfilled sexual longing.

One Sided Love Story.......2007-02-03
Noli is a high school student unhappy with her life. She has nothing to talk about with her father, her parents are distant from each other, and she and her mother do nothing but fight. Mostly they fight about the way Noli looks. She is a tomboy and refuses to dress in frilly girly clothes or to grow her hair long. Recently she has started drinking in order to make things a little more bearable.
On her first day of her junior year, Noli meets TJ. He is new and he is absolutely beautiful. His father is an author, so TJ is also smart, well read and worldly. He seems to know everything about everything, and he is also an athlete. There seems to be nothing he can't do, and Noli finds herself falling in love with him.
It is shocking to Noli that TJ is just as taken with her as she is with him. Soon they are spending every moment together and Noli's life is much better. She is certain TJ is her soulmate. However, there is one problem. She would like their relationship to be more physical, but he doesn't seem to want to do more than kiss her on the cheek. Despite her happiness at finding someone so perfect, Noli begins to suspect that something might be wrong.
I liked the fact that over the course of the book Noli was able to take more control over her life and her happiness. She was a stronger character at the end than at the beginning. It was unfortunate, though, that she and TJ could not be friends again.
His Secret Will Change Her.......2005-02-08
Whistle me home was a great book. I gave this book four stars.Whistle me home is about a boy who is unsure about his sexuality, and a girl who is simply looking for love.TJ is new to schooland everyone finds him atractive.Nolli and TJ become fast friends and soon lovers. From the start Nolli thinks somthing is different about their relationship. She tinks they are in love but TJ acts very different around her. When they go out in public TJ makes her dress like a boy. They look more like twins than boyfriend and girlfriend.Soon Nolli figures out that TJ has a secert that will forever change their relationship.I gave this book four stars because it is a great love story with a twist.the ending was not exactly what i expected. It leaft me wondering.Over all it was a great book .I would recomend it for someone who is looking for a great love story
Whistle me home - for kids 14 and over........2003-09-13
Whistle me home is about a tomboyish girl named Noli who falls in love with TG, the cutest guy around. They start a relationship that Noli wants to include sex with but TG is unreluctant. She soon comes to realize that he is gay and he admits it. But he still insists that he still loves her {even though he is gay} though Noli cannot forgive him right away, she does eventually in the end. This novel has some rough language, mature subject matter which includes sexual talk and dealing with alcolholism. All in all I enjoyed this novel very much but recommend it to an older teenage audience.
A pretty good book.......2002-10-29
The name of the book I read is Whistle Me Home by Barbara Wersba. It is a romance story about a girl named Noli and a boy named T.j. They met the first day of the school year and they fell in love and started dating. Noli is kind of a tomboy and T.j. is the new cute kid in school. But soon Noli finds out the truth about t.j. and his homosexuality. In the beginning of the book you read through the narrators, Noli's point of view as she watches her ex-boyfriend T.j walking with his new friend Walker through the woods. After that the rest of the book is a flashback of Noli's memories. Noli is known as the outcast and has a drinking problem, which T.j. disapproves of. She is skinny and very insecure about herself. Her and her mother are always fighting about how she should like more girlish. As their relationship grows deeper, Noli wants to become more physical but T.j. seems satisfied with the way things are. This is a hint to her about his homosexuality. T.j. is a super athlete and the all around "cute kid" in school as everyone refers to him as. He is under a lot of stress at home from the pressure his parents put him under about having a straight life. T.j.'s and Noli's break up is a very emotional one. T.j. still wants to remain friends with her but she can't because her love for him is too great to just be friends. This book is not the greatest; it's pointed more towards female teens. It's very confusing, and jumps around a lot. But it's not completely horrible book.
Whistle Me Home.......2002-02-13
This book was ok. It was definitely not the best book ever. It had surprising elements, but the characters were dull. I wouldn't recommend to anyone who doesn't like to read. Find something else!

Book Description
French cuisine is such a staple in our understanding of fine food that we forget the accidents of history that led to its creation. Accounting for Taste brings these "accidents" to the surface, illuminating the magic of French cuisine and the mystery behind its historical development. Priscilla Parkhurst Ferguson explains how the food of France became French cuisine.
This momentous culinary journey begins with Ancien Régime cookbooks and ends with twenty-first-century cooking programs. It takes us from Carême, the "inventor" of modern French cuisine in the early nineteenth century, to top chefs today, such as Daniel Boulud and Jacques Pépin. Not a history of French cuisine, Accounting for Taste focuses on the people, places, and institutions that have made this cuisine what it is today: a privileged vehicle for national identity, a model of cultural ascendancy, and a pivotal site where practice and performance intersect. With sources as various as the novels of Balzac and Proust, interviews with contemporary chefs such as David Bouley and Charlie Trotter, and the film Babette's Feast, Ferguson maps the cultural field that structures culinary affairs in France and then exports its crucial ingredients. What's more, well beyond food, the intricate connections between cuisine and country, between local practice and national identity, illuminate the concept of culture itself.
To Brillat-Savarin's famous dictum—"Animals fill themselves, people eat, intelligent people alone know how to eat"—Priscilla Ferguson adds, and Accounting for Taste shows, how the truly intelligent also know why they eat the way they do.
“Parkhurst Ferguson has her nose in the right place, and an infectious lust for her subject that makes this trawl through the history and cultural significance of French food—from French Revolution to Babette’s Feast via Balzac’s suppers and Proust’s madeleines—a satisfying meal of varied courses.”—Ian Kelly, Times (UK)
Book Description
Economists generally accept as a given the old adage that there's no accounting for tastes. Nobel Laureate Gary Becker disagrees, and in this lively new collection he confronts the problem of preferences and values: how they are formed and how they affect our behavior. He argues that past experiences and social influences form two basic capital stocks: personal and social. He then applies these concepts to assessing the effects of advertising, the power of peer pressure, the nature of addiction, and the function of habits. This framework promises to illuminate many other realms of social life previously considered off-limits by economists.

Book Description
Accounting for Tastes is the most systematic and substantial study of Australian cultural tastes, preferences and activities ever published. While based on the findings of a survey, the book also includes transcripts from interviews where respondents talk freely about what governs their tastes and preferences in home furnishings, music, books, sports, television programs, and art. It is a book that makes a substantial contribution to the empirical and policy-oriented social inquiry into questions of cultural practices and preferences.

Aussie True Blue.......2000-09-03
Australia and Australians are truely unique to the world. They see things differently, express them differently and seem as laid back as their accent. This book lets you share in the Australian lifestyle and through images produced with Tony Bennet's words you can see, touch and taste the Australian lifestyle. Everyone should experience a little of the Land Down Under and if you can't afford the plane ticket this book is the next best thing. Sit back in a comfortable chair, take the phone off your hook and get lost in Australia. Share a few hours with the regular Aussie and relax.

Book Description
Mountain Light is the best-selling classic that captures the unique artistic vision of Galen Rowell, one of the world's most celebrated nature photographers. This remarkable collection offers 80 of Rowell's finest photographic images, as well as the stories behind them - what he was after and how he achieved it.
Rowell arranges the photographs, with details of their creation, in eight exhibits according to visual themes, reflecting his fascination with the infinitely varying qualities of light found in mountain landscapes. He recounts his development as a photographer, his philosophy and techniques for creating "dynamic landscapes," and his adventures in remote, dangerous, and beautiful places, from California's Yosemite Valley to almost inaccessible peaks in China.
Rowell also explains how film and the human eye see differently, how he selects and composes the content of his work, how to work with optical phenomena and natural light, and how equipment and adventure interact in the field.
Customer Reviews:
A Must Read For Landscape Photographers.......2007-07-23
This is a must read for anyone who likes to shoot landscape photography. This book doesn't go into a lot of technical details, and the author assumes the readers have a basic knowledge of how SLRs operate, but rather it deals more with the "why" of photography and "when", which I found to be very interesting and thought provoking. Galen Rowell shares his insights about mountain light and how his mind works when he is out with a camera along with what photography meant for him, and it changed my approach to landscape photography. He also shares his unsuccessful stories, which is not very usual for these types of books, and it's good to see that even for photographers of his level things have never come easy. Luck is a big part of it all, and he has a great essay there on how to be in a better position for its appearance. In addition, this book is full of his outstanding landscape art, and that alone is worth whatever the price you will pay for it.
A photography how-to book, not a camera manual.......2007-03-29
This is a book about making meaningful landscape photographs. This is not a book about which f/stop to use or how to adjust your depth of field or exposure. There are a ton of those types of books on the market. This book is about vision, learning to see and connecting personally with your images.
If you're comfortable with the mechanical aspects of your camera and are struggling with "technically well executed but lifeless images" this is your guide.
I highly recommend it.
Great Book.......2007-01-10
It's a great book ! you'll find all you need about photographing up in the mountains ! Galan Rowell was a great person ! A book worth reading by anybody who enjoys photography at high altitude.
What can I say.......2007-01-09
This is a beautiful book..full of amazing photos and will inspire you to take pictures like Galen.
Not many photographs.......2006-07-31
I have found suprising that there is a lot of text in this book and only few photographs. It is not an album - so don't expect one. However I enjoyed reading this book. Book is published on a thin paper (the same goes for cover) and seems not very solid.
