Book Description
This widely acclaimed book analyzes the political effects of scientific research as exemplified by one field, economic botany, during one epoch, the nineteenth century, when Great Britain was the world's most powerful nation. Lucile Brockway examines how the British botanic garden network developed and transferred economically important plants to different parts of the world to promote the prosperity of the Empire.
In this classic work, available once again after many years out of print, Brockway examines in detail three cases in which British scientists transferred important crop plants -- cinchona (a source of quinine), rubber and sisal -- to new continents. Weaving together botanical, historical, economic, political and ethnographic findings, the author illuminates the remarkable social role of botany and the entwined relation between science and politics in an imperial era.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent book.......2004-09-04
This is an excellent book, very easy to read and covering the colonial economic botany (rubber, quinin, sisal) in a true apealing way.
Best book my mom ever wrote.......1997-07-31
The author was my mother. The book, based on her anthropology thesis, applied anthropological concepts to the sweeping GLOBAL influence and changes of Western colonization using the British empire as the model. Its a ground breaking book, easy and interesting to read (don't mind the implicit occasional politics). "The best part" (that's an inside family joke) is learning about the relationship between colonial expansion, Kew Gardens, rubber plantations, malaria, chinchona (sp?) and Gin and Tonics. I actually typed an early version of this chapter and couldn't have been happier with the content

Recommend.......2007-03-22
A dr. friend loaned me this book - but I liked it so much I am buying a copy for future reference. I found the reference material presented in an unusual but interesting way. Complex concepts on coral life cycles were simplified (and nicely illustrated) so that laymen could understand the topic without insulting the minds of the more advanced / trained biologist.
It may not be perfect in every way - but I liked it, I learned from it and I am buying a personal copy even after reading a loaned one. It has a wealth of information that taught me things that over 20 years of scuba diving, spending over 2 weeks of my life underwater and many years of being a scuba instructor have not. Testimony enough?
Coral Reef Review.......2004-02-08
This book's format does not fit in any "box", hence the wide range of reviews.
Though an unorthodox presentation in a paperback comic book style, it's a well thought out and clear presentation.
The author has distilled much into an easily comprehended book, suitable for adults to teens.
I am a diver and have a zoology degree, and view this from a different and more favorable light than perhaps another. It makes it easy to get one "up to speed" on a watery world.
I shall be getting another copy as a gift for a new diver..as a shortcut to explaining the unique creatures of the sea, and how they interact.
jam-packed with knowledge hard to find elsewhere.......2002-05-02
This is an unusual work because of its partly textbook, partly "comic book" format, but don't let that fool you. The author presents a wealth of information on the extremely complex, multi-faceted animal and plant interrelationships of Hawaii's coral reef ecosystem. He has pulled together an enormous amount of data from the scientific journal literature (where it is widely scattered and basically unavailable to lay readers) and has organized and presented this knowledge in his own unique, original and easy-to-assimilate style. From some of the comments below, it is clear that some people don't take to his style, but I found it refreshing, amusing at times, and certainly easier to read than a standard textbook. He has simplified, but not dumbed down the information, and illustrated it with numerous photographs and drawings. This book is really jam packed with illustrative material. (If you are looking for a lot of gorgeous underwater photographs, however, this book will disappoint. These are working photos, not pretty pictures for the most part.) For solid information on how a reef ecosystem works this is as good an introduction as you are likely to get. In fact, it's pretty much unique. I know of nothing else like it and I learned a tremendous amount by reading it. I should mention that, as the title indicates, the book is limited pretty much to Hawaiian reefs, which have fewer species and are probably less complex than reefs in the Caribbean or western Pacific. But the basic relationships and ideas hold true for all coral reefs. Yes, perhaps the author could be seen as a bit preachy, but he is devoted to protecting Hawaii's reefs and shouldn't be faulted for that. I give this book high marks for its originality and for the sheer amount of complex information the author has managed to present. If you are deeply interested in the subject of coral reef ecology, definitely get this book. If you are only marginally interested in coral reefs, well--you may find the book only marginally interesting. That's my take.
Pretty good........2001-11-02
I am in love with tropical marine life, but this is the first book about reef ecology I've read so I'm not exactly sure how to judge it. I've read the whole book, cover to cover, in about two weeks for offhand studies, maybe 10-15 pages a day, on average, all week. The first part of the book is a little interesting, talking about the structure of jellyfish, or more correctly 'sea jellies', but not much for me to give the book rapt attention. Some parts are just plain boring to be honest. The pictures are good, but not a lot of text, most of the time just a third or a half of the page is text.
I think the most interesting part is the last half where it talks about coral reef predators and the impact of human life on the Hawaiian reefs. It's not exactly a book that you can't put down, but it has some fascinating information that I think any marine life lover should know, so all in all I think it's a pretty good book.
Not a good buy.......2001-08-14
I don't think this book is quite as bad as the one star the first reviewer gave it, but the second reviewer must be kidding. Five stars?! Terrific graphic design?! Fun to read?! I give it two stars, and that's being on the generous side. I would not recommend it.

hawaii's reefs.......2000-09-06
This book is very informative on general species a snorkeler or diver might encounter. The book gives pictures, names, and general information about the animals. This book covers coral, invertebrates, and fish. It also shows some rare species that are rarely encountered. This book is a definite buy if you're looking for good knowledge. ENJOY!

Book Description
"We live in what may be the most consumer-oriented society in history. . . .Once a purely utilitarian chore, shopping has been elevated to the status of a national passion."--Juliet B. Schor, The Overworked American. A unique and definitive reader on our "national passion"--buying stuff--and its consequences for American society. We are citizens, owners and workers, believers and heathens, but today more than anything else we are consumers. How this came to be and its consequences for us all is the subject of this pioneering reader on the rise--and continued rise--of consumerism. The Consumer Society Reader features a range of key works on the nature and evolution of consumer society. It includes classics such as the Frankfurt School writers Adorno, Horkheimer, and Marcuse on the Culture Industry; Thorstein Veblen's oft-cited writings on "conspicuous consumption"; Betty Friedan on the housewife's central role in consumer society; and John Kenneth Galbraith's influential analysis of the "affluent society." The book also includes much-discussed recent work by such leading critics as Pierre Bourdieu, Thomas Frank, bell hooks, Bill McKibben, and Janice Radway. A landmark in social criticism, The Consumer Society Reader is sure to become the standard book on the subject.
Customer Reviews:
May have bitten off more than I could chew =).......2001-01-16
I have read numerous books regarding consumption, simplicity, etc. I have read all of Juliet Schor's books also. This books is an excellent thought provoking book, HOWEVER, be sure that you have a clear mind and a good chunk of time on your hands. Yes, the book is long, but that's not really the issue. It's a compilation of essays, some quite old. They do offer a lot of insight, but it tends to be more economic insight. If you enjoy reading about environmental issues and voluntary simplicity, this does have some of that, but much of it is information about things like trends in buying, capitalism and advertising. While it's an interesting read, I would advise checking it out of the library and reading the essays that interest you. Keeping this book in your library doesn't serve much of a purpose. Not even for inspiration and motivation, which is a reason I keep many of the simplicity books that I enjoy. Bottom line... pretty good read, but borrow, don't buy it.

Book Description
Consumption has often been called America's true national pastime. From the earliest European explorers trading with Native Americans to today's Internet shoppers, consumerism has driven American society. Until recent years, however, consumerism has received little serious attention from historians and other scholars.
This welcome volume offers the most comprehensive and incisive exploration of American consumer history to date. The first book on this topic to span the four centuries from the colonial era to the present, and the first to propose theoretical frameworks, the volume brings consumer society to the center of American history. Indeed, its authors demonstrate the many ways their research enhances knowledge of a broad range of historical topics, such as politics, labor ideology, immigrant life, and race, gender, and class relations. By including types of consumer studies which are seldom linked, this volume offers both a basis for historical synthesis and a springboard for further inquiry.
With contributions by Raymond Williams, Jean Baudrillard, Juliet B. Schor, Kim Moody, Jean-Christophe Agnew, and many others, plus the most comprehensive bibliographical essay ever produced on the historiography of American consumption, Consumer Society in American History will take its place as the definitive sourcebook for this emerging field.

Book Description
The Consumer Society Reader is the most substantial collection to date on contemporary and classic literature on consumption and consumer society. It introduces students and researchers to the topics, themes, and preoccupations of twentieth-century consumer culture. Part I introduces some of the important theoretical and conceptual material through which we have come to appreciate the dominant themes of our consumer society. Contributions from a range of thinkers - Pierre Bourdieu, Dick Hebdige, and Michel de Certeau, among others - give special attention to the nature of human needs, their satisfaction, and the broad implications of the provision of social and material goods by a capitalist means of production. Part II chronicles the evolution of the modern consumer society from its inception to the present day. Contemporary and popular writers, including John Kenneth Galbraith, Vance Packard, and Jean Baudrillard chart the dynamism of consumer society; its many changing social, cultural, economic, and political turns over time; and the spirited responses it has provoked from critics.

Book Description
This volume merges four streams of inquiry and interpretation in a study of the evolution and emergence of Japan's leading industrial firms during the twentieth century. First, it is a historical study of how the industrial institutions of modern Japan appeared and matured. Second, it is an organization study of the basic forms of social and economic interaction in Japan. Third, it is a development study of how circumstances of rapid technical and economic change have shaped the Japanese business system. It is also a strategy study of how Japanese managers have responded to and shaped these circumstances. This fourfold synthesis offers a model of institutional development under conditions of late economic development and private initiative that falls somewhere between a capitalist development state and a free market economy. Business policy rather than industrial policy is accentuated, revealing a set of robust institutions and a dynamic to activate and interrelate them.

Becoming Animal - wise!.......2007-01-12
Ted Andrews has put alot of research & dedication into this resource.
Fantastic info on all animals included & excellent sections on how to incorporate animal wisdom into your life.
An excellent resource for healers & Kinesiologists when balancing or for anyone who loves animals & nature.
Highly recommended buy.
More of the same from Ted.......2006-09-24
Another cover that suggests things Native American, another round of clip-art-type illos, another dose of the "New Age" (see my review for Animal-Speak).
This book is interesting in that it lists scores of less-popular, less-cuddly critters: insects, arachnids, arthropods, reptiles, amphibians, and fish. (Where else ya' gonna go if you think you have a Crayfish totem?)
Animal-Wise: The Spirit Language and Signs of Nature........2005-08-16
Truley another wonderful book on the subject of animal magic and totems. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in finding out what animal(s) is their totem or just to find out what each animal that comes into their life means amd how it relates to them.
A good companion to Animal-Speak.......2005-08-13
I'm glad I snagged a copy of this book. Usually when an author puts out another book on the same topic as before it ends up being flogge past redemption. This one, though, is a good expansion on what Animal-Speak contained. I'm especially happy about the continuation of the animal totem dictionary, primarily because it reminds readers that there are animals beyond North America ;)
I wouldn't really recommend it as a stand-alone book for a beginner because you really do need a lot of the material from Animal-Speak for betetr context, but if you really, really like Andrews' work go ahead and get this. If you're more independent, you can probably pass it up since it's pretty much the second half of a very large book.
Good for reading about less popular animals.......2005-06-04
Animal-Wise expands on Ted Andrews first book, Animal-Speak, and is also a companion to Animal-Wise Tarot. A New Age shaman, Ted Andrews gained his knowledge of animals as a wildlife rehabilitator of birds of prey and small mammals. In writing this book on animals, he states, "My approach is universal, drawing upon my own naturalistic and mystical experiences and education. I have tried to incorporate the science with the mystical, the zoology with mythology, seeking out the common threads running through all traditions about the animals." He partly succeeds in his efforts, but often veers off by presenting contradicatory information about the animals.
Mr. Andrews first discusses how to understand the language of nature. He offers suggestions on how to learn about and from animals, such as quietly watch the animals as they go about their activities. The author writes, "Feel and imagine yourself as part of the environment, a part of the natural surroundings. Quietly observe the various sounds." He stresses that by observing, the reader can begin to know the natural world.
Since Mr. Andrews is familiar with shamanistic practices, he presumes that the reader is also. Also, the author assumes that the reader understands New Age concepts, as well. For example, in the section on creating "your inner totem pole" by associating animals to human charkas, he takes for granted that the reader follows what he is doing.
Mr. Andrews has a propensity to leap from one unrelated concept to another in an animal's teaching. For example, he starts one of his teachings, "Snail has often been associated with the death (sic) and the spirits of the dead." At the end of Snail's lesson, with little transition, Ted Andrews writes, "Snails as messengers remind us that the Holy Child (inner child) still lives with in us. It is often a sign that it is time to bring that child out once more. Remember that all is possible to the Holy Child within."
Animal-Wise is one of the few "animal wisdom" books that features a full complement of Crawling Ones, Cold-Blooded Ones, and Finned and Water Ones. Ted Andrews has a wide assortment of Cold-Blooded Ones ranging from Snapping Turtle to Sea Turtle to Salamander. This book will complete a reader's "animal wisdom" library.
