            Book Description

Step outside the pressures of modern life, and join Michael and Kathleens quest for isolation, beauty, solitude and adventure as they travel alone across the Barren Grounds of Canada. Their journey begins camped amid the decaying ice of a new Arctic spring, and ends 37 days later as they harvest blueberries before a final descent to Baker Lake at the head of Chesterfield Inlet on Hudson Bay.

Simply, yet eloquently written, Three Seasons in the Wind transports the readers imagination to the very banks of the magical Thelon River. By so doing, your heart will awaken to an ancient, nomadic lifestyle of physical challenge and timeless joy that is available to all who dare to pursue their dreams in Canadas pristine Northern landscape.

            Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Honest, Intriguing True Adventure.......2003-07-11

My only real complaint about this book is that I wish it were longer and had more photos. The style is a combination of the authors' personal diaries they kept while on their month-long voyage down the wild Thelon River in far northern Canada where the open tundra dominates. Their writing was very honest, and I felt intrigued to be reading a firsthand account instead of a recollection that you feel was written and embellished after their trip. At the end of the book, one of the authors describes a portage in great detail and provides a play-by-play of the physical rigors and also the emotional state during this long and arduous portage. This is a wonderful and memorable piece of writing, and I wish that they had given that level of detail to the entire trip. Nonetheless, highly recommended for those who love true adventure stories and who have any interest in a long wilderness canoe trip.

5 out of 5 stars Both the how and why for time spent in the wilderness........1999-10-16

This book succeeds through its unpretentious and honest description of a journey well taken. The concurrent use of diary entries from both of the Pitts gives the narrative a nice balanced feel. The details of how to prepare and do what is required by a trip such as this are very clearly explained without bogging down the story. The canoe seems to represent chiefly a means, rather than an end, because the authors are best at defining why they did this in the first place. Their story provides inspiration particularly to those of us who have not been there before.

4 out of 5 stars Not just a canoeing book - a personal perspective on life.......1999-09-30

I anticipated that this book might be just another canoe guidebook about a northern Canadian river since its size and layout indicated that it wasn't a coffee table photo collection - except for the striking cover photograph. The contents were, therefore, an unexpected and pleasant surprise. Yes - the book does describe a canoe journey - but it seems to me that this is primarily a narrative of personal development. The effective use of their diaries to evoke the experience of the landscape, and the insights of this husband and wife partnership about their experiences and feelings make the book far more than a story about canoeing. The story uses their experience to give the reader some direct insight into the personal development of two apparently ordinary people who undertake what to many of us would be an unthinkable challenge. In our modern, urbanized society, there is little opportunity to experience the spirit of the early North American explorers - the Pitts manage to deliver that sense of discovery (both personal and geographic) in the telling of their journey through their respective diaries. This is not a "canoe book" - it is tale of two people confronting the challenges of life - who just happened to be canoeing at the time. One was left wishing the river had been longer so that we could share their experience for a few more pages.

                Product Description

The bustling city of New Delhi is a place where eating out has increasingly become a way of life. New Delhi is known for its exquisite Mughlai cuisine (introduced by the early Islamic rulers) and an extraordinary range of vegetarian fare. But did you know that Chinese food - tempered in true Indian inimitable style - is the second most popular cuisine in the country? It all began in the late 18th century with a failed business by a Chinese immigrant. Today, authentic and 'Indianised' Chinese food is available all over the city - in high-end restaurants, mid-range eateries, mobile vans and small kiosks.

Not Just A Good Food Guide: New Delhi introduces readers to the best of the better-known south and north Indian cusines, the traditional Mughlai food (introduced by the early Islamic rulers), the mainly non-vegetarian Kashmiri palates, food from other but lesser-known parts of India, the many foreign dishes available here, the local food chains and, of course, the ubiquitous street food of Delhi.

This guide also contains a short note about the health hazards that, unfortunately, are so vital to know in a place like Delhi. It will take readers through the many places and streets of Delhi where a multitude of eateries and restaurants, mostly in residential and shopping complexes and also in luxury hotels, provide mouth-watering delicacies that originate in the different parts of the enchanting sub-continent called India.

                Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Melissa has redeemed herself!.......2007-01-19

After being oh-so-disappointed with Melissa's book The Breakup Club, I was thrilled to read this charming novel about two teenage girls who, in a way, switch places for six weeks. Theodora is a teen actress headed down Lindsay Lohan's path and fast. Emily is an invisible sixteen year old living in Dora's hometown. When Dora's publicist arranges for her to live with Emily's family for six weeks to film a reality show, both girls' lives change and they're forced to re-examine everything and learn a lot about themselves. I absolutely loved this book and couldn't put it down. I think she could even pull out a sequel!

5 out of 5 stars great teen read.......2006-09-12

Meet Emily Fine. She's as exciting as her name. That is, not very. The boy she spent two years loving from afar dates her for two weeks before dumping her. She wears boring clothes, does all her homework, is respectful to her mother and new step-father, helps with her new baby sister, and never gets into trouble. Now meet Theodora Twist. She's... well, she's Theodora Twist! The hottest sixteen-year-old actress ever to come out of Nowheresville, New Jersey. Nearly every high school boy in America has a crush on her, but she can't be bother with them. Not when she has twin hottie boyfriends of her own. So what do these two girls have in common? Well, Emily lives in Theodora's old house. And, once upon a time, for about four weeks, the two girls were friends. But that was years ago. Forgotten. What they have in common now is that Theodora is going to be living with Emily and her family for a month, for her new reality show, Theodora Twist: Just a Regular Teen. After some scandalous photos of Theodora are taken, her agent decides that she needs to re-invent her image. And what could be better than as a regular teen? Especially with Emily for a surrogate sister, how could she possibly get into trouble? Emily and Theodora are both a little weary about this arrangement, because it seems they have nothing in common. But they agree, and as the show progresses, they realize that they have more in common than they may initially think. This story about unexpected friendship is far from cheesy. It is written so realistically that you can't help but believe it. Emily is likeable right away, and Theodora grows on the reader as she reveals her true self to Emily, bit by bit. Poignant, touching, and true, you won't want to put this book down.

                5 out of 5 stars kewl.......2006-08-01

I bought this book at a Borders at an airport to read on the plane. I finished the book way before we landed. It was that good. It's true that it has a bit of inappropiateness, but overall, it was great. Melissa Senate portays her characters well and she did a great job.

                5 out of 5 stars A must read!.......2006-07-20

I absolutely LOVED this book. I've read Melissa Senate's chick lit and wasn't sure how well she'd write a teen book.
I loved reading about both Theodora and Emily and how things were going to turn out between the former friends. Even though Theodora was a top teen actress who acted poorly, Emily saw the good in her anyways.
I think this is a must read for any teen reader.

5 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2006-05-31

I admit it--I'm a sucker for light, fun, fast reads that deal with situations I would never in a million years find myself in. Such is the case of THEODORA TWIST, a book that deals with a sixteen-year old Hollywood starlet, a beautiful teen who has experienced more in her young life than I'll ever experience in mine.

The problem starts when Theodora Twist, young star and Hollywood's darling, gets caught one too many times in a scandalous situation. Since she's dating both of the twin Bellini brothers (and by dating, I also mean sleeping with), her many endorsers aren't so sure of her wholesome appeal to the tweens and teens that they're looking to rope into the theaters. Her agent-slash-talent manager, Ashley Bean, has schooled her in the art of being cheerfully untruthful, but Theodora once again lets her stubbornness get in the way of good acting--not only does she kiss both Bo and Brandon Bellini for the benefit of a reporter, but she's later caught cavorting with them in the ocean half-naked.

Ashley's job is damage control, and she comes up with what she believes is the perfect resolution to Theodora's wild child image. She'll be the star of her own reality show, Theodora Twist: Just a Regular Teen! The goal of the show is simple--prove to the world's population that Theodora isn't the spoiled, pampered, sexually-active teen that she really is, but the down-to-earth, normal teenager that you don't get to see on television and the big screen. Although Theodora was born Dora Twistler, she has no intention of ever being that person again. And spending a month living in her childhood home with Emily Fine and her family, going to high school, hanging out at the mall, and going to prom is not her idea of fun.

For Emily, she's not sure what to think about having the elusive and mysterious Theodora Twist in her house, sharing her bedroom, having her every move and conversation taped for possible broadcast on television. Sure, she's now popular and in-demand, but that's only destined to last as long as Theodora is in town. When she leaves, Emily knows she'll go back to the boring, nobody girl she's always been.

But Emily and Theodora both have a lot to learn, about friendship, self-esteem, and family. As Theodora learns that the death of her father is still haunting her, and Emily realizes that being famous might not be all it's cracked up to be, a friendship is born that has nothing to do with fame and fortune.

THEODORA TWIST is a quick, fun read that will appeal to readers on many levels. The sexuality of Theodora may bother some, but it's never shown as a preferable lifestyle, but rather the results of a life lived in Hollywood's spotlight. I truly enjoyed this quick read, and guarantee that others will, as well.

4 out of 5 stars A Little Book Packed with Many Layers.......2007-07-29

This like book turned out to be a pleasant little surprise. Normally I would not have picked up a book like this because the title advertises itself as a potential tool to manipulate people, but as a teacher, I thought maybe it would help me understand where some of my students are coming from.

On one level, the book does exactly what it advertises by describing and cataloging behaviors observed in others.

On another level, the book teaches you to recognize when others are trying to manipulate you.

On a much deeper level, the true beauty of this book lies in the fact that it holds up a mirror to see ourselves. It collects a vocabulary to label traits we observe in others, and in turn, we recognize them in ourselves. In discovering how others attempt to manipulate others, we discover how we try to manipulate others, often unconsciously to protect our own hidden needs and fears.

In the end, this little book provides a few tools to help dig through the many layers of tarnish the false self builds up so that we may risk being our true self.

4 out of 5 stars Viewing the World from the Inside Out.......2007-06-29

This book was not what I thought it would be. That was a pleasant surprise. I bought the book thinking it would be a self-help book about reading other people and characterizing them. It turns out, the book is more about self-evaluation - what you project outwards and what you allow in.

"How to Read People..." is a thought-provoking book. It is short. Many of its chapters are short. The ideas presented are short. None of the means it is it is not meaningful or helpful, however.

This is the type of book that can be read over and over. In fact, in the beginning of the book, it advises the reader to do so. Each reading will produce another revelation depending on the frame of mind the reader has at the time of the reading.

The ideas and philosophy professed in the book are almost Eastern mysticism. The book teaches "wholeness" with the Universe and obeying the practice of being oneself by following one's true feelings.

The book is very portable. It is a small hardcover. It can easily fit into a jacket pocket or purse.

                1 out of 5 stars Worthless.......2007-06-04

This book is nothing more than a marketing ploy. It consists of 86 pages of pure nonsense...most pages consist of only a few sentences. This book should not be confused with "How to Read a Person like a Book." the two are not even on the same planet.

                complete waste of money.

Reconstructing Russia focuses on the Wilson administrations efforts to provide economic support to Russian Siberia as a counterpoint to German economic influence. The connection between the Wilson administrations efforts in Siberia and the Marshall Plan becomes even more significant at the close of the 20th century as debates are waged over the issue of economic assistance to the former Soviet Union.

                    5 out of 5 stars Pondering Nature.......2007-08-31

Most of us do not spend our days thinking about the magic of nature. In fact, it is rare that we stop and wonder at the unique qualities of life and evolution. This book is a collection of short essays which seem to take a walk through nature, pondering its interesting and beautiful idiosyncrasies. Without going into too much detail, Eiseley helps us to stop and look at the seemingly small things and understand their vast importance. This is not a complicated book designed for naturalists, but a fairly straightforward and engaging book for those who simply enjoy nature. A high school student interested in studying anthropology or environmental science in college would be wise to read this as inspiration.

5 out of 5 stars one of the little known great writers........2007-02-10

the title, i suppose, could lead one to think that this book might be too heavily on the new-agey side of things for one's taste. not so! mr eiseley is one of the most profound thinkers i have come across over the years, and his writing is spectacular. i have seldom come across a non-fiction writer with such a marvellous prose style (lytton strachey comes to mind as an equivilant). this great book had me looking at life past and present in ways and from angles i had never considered. the authors wonder at existence in all its mystery, joy, and sorrow, made for some of the most moving reading i have ever encountered. this, and other works by mr eiseley, i will be reading and rereading throughout my lifetime.

5 out of 5 stars Great book arrived in great shape.......2006-03-20

Great book, it arrived in great shape in a timely manner

3 out of 5 stars scholarly treatment of Darwin's ideas - and textual analysis.......2004-05-23

Eiseley has read all of the different editions of "Origin," and in that way traces the evolution of Darwin's thought in the context of his times and in how he re-edited his books as his opinion changed. It is well written and argued and somewhat better than normal academic writing, but it still reads like a pedantic text. Perhaps it was too advanced, or simply too detailed, for the level of my interest, but I found a lot of this somewhat boring - and I admit that that is as personal as a reflection on the text. Eiseley is a world-class science writer, up there with Sagan and Gould, and explains with great clarity, etc. You get to know Darwin's mind, his many doubts, and the way he constantly hedged and worried about his reception.

Recommended with this in mind. It really depends on what you are looking for.

4 out of 5 stars "...Lie Awake While the Meteors Whisper Greenly Overhead.".......2003-10-17

This is a very unusual book. It is ostensibly about the "Immense Journey" of man along his long evolutionary trail. But, in the same way that "The Odyssey" is not just an historical travel tale, Eiseley's book is much more. This is a work about the wonders of life, the joys of curiosity, the rewards from solitary time spent in the natural world and the transitory nature of all existence.

This one must have been just fantastic when it was published in 1957. It's still very good in 2003 despite the passage of time, which has exposed several of Eiseley's scientific beliefs and musings to be erroneous. Keep in mind the tremendous advancements in archeology, molecular biology and all other fields of science over the last 46 years and don't get hung up on these anachronisms. Instead, revel in the beautiful language Eiseley uses and the imagery he evokes: "Some lands are flat and grass-covered, and smile so evenly up at the sun that they seem forever youthful, untouched by man or time." Or another favorite: "Tyrannosaurs, enormous bipedal caricatures of men, would stalk mindlessly across the sites of future cities and go their slow way down into the dark of geologic time."

Read this book and you'll want to dig up fossils, listen to the wind, watch other animals and soak up life. And you will probably want to read it again.
