Book Description
The 186th IAU Symposium came at an exciting and perhaps even historic time for extragalactic astronomy. New spacecraft observations plumbed the depths of the Universe out to redshifts of five, while revealing astounding details of nearby galaxies and AGN at intermediate redshifts. Theoretical ideas on structure formation, together with results from detailed numerical modeling, created a comprehensive framework for modeling the formation of galaxies and the transformation of galaxies by interactions and mergers. All these strands came together at the Symposium, as participants glimpsed a developing synthesis highlighting galactic encounters and their role in the history of the Universe. This volume offers professional astronomers, including PhD students, an overview of the rapidly advancing subject of galaxy interactions at low and high redshifts.

Book Description
Anyone who has sailed small boats has surely experienced the romantic dream of crossing an ocean or even sailing around the world. But what was once fantasy is now reality. With a growing glut of good used boats on the market, its possible to sail around the world in a boat that costs less than a car.
In this fascinating book, well-known boating author John Vigor turns the spotlight on 20 seaworthy sailboats that are at home on the ocean. These are old fiberglass boats, mostly of traditional design and strong construction. All are small their sizes range from 20 feet to 32 feet overall but all have crossed oceans. Many have circumnavigated the world. And all are inexpensive.
There are many hundreds of small cruising boats sailing the seven seas at this moment. They explore everywhere, from the ice-bound shores of Antarctica to the high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere. Most, however, ply the tradewind routes where flying fish play. The water is warm, and coconut trees line calm lagoons bounded by beaches of pure white sand.
But choosing the right boat to cross an ocean or go around the world can be a confusing and exasperating experience, particularly if your budget is tight. Its well-nigh impossible to find objective comparisons.
Vigor sets out to remedy that in this book. He compares the designs and handling characteristics of 20 different boats whose prices on the secondhand market start at about $3,000. Interviews with experienced owners (featuring valuable tips about handling each boat in heavy weather) are interspersed with line drawings of hulls, sailplans, and accommodations. Vigor has unearthed the known weaknesses of each boat and explains how to deal with them. He rates their comparative seaworthiness, their speed, and the number of people they can carry in comfort.
If you have ever dreamed the dream, this is the book that will turn it into reality.
Customer Reviews:
Helping narrow down the small solo sailing boat choices!.......2007-09-09
I have been looking for a small seaworthy sailboat to single hand, if necessary. Discovering this book made my searching easier! Vigor gives a wonderfully thorough description of each of the 20 boats he reviews. He offers his opinion, the opinion of others, and gives both the positive and negative points of each boat from all perspectives. I found this book very informative, very accurate, and it introduced me to several wonderful boats I never new existed...of which I hope to be an owner of one in the near future!
If you want a cruising boat: start here!.......2007-06-24
After spending years and years devouring sailing magazines and other information sources, I was trying to get serious on finding a cruising boat. Not being independently wealthy, I tried to find quality information on proven designs which were 'large enough' to cruise, but 'small enough' to afford.
John Vigor's book was a god-sent. It provided me with a starting point and the information on each boat which allowed me the necessary pre-selection for a more detailed search. As pointed out in other reviews, the reports from actual boat owners are invaluable.
.... by the way, I ended up purchasing a Westsail 32
Dreams in paper form.......2007-05-15
This book took hold of my imagination and such that I actually went out and got me a small boat that can take me anywhere! With any luck, perhaps I can eventually try a few of the other inspiring little boats Mr Vigor so painstakingly described in this little tome!
Really, this has become my favourite book - which I actually carry around with me; if I'm ever feeling down, I can just pull out the dog-eared little paperback and wistfully dream about Bristol Channel Cutters and Pearson Tritons and Folkboats and cetera!
Always entertaining.......2007-04-01
I bought this book years ago and still pick it up occasionally. Always entertaining. I had dreams, long since abandoned, of adventure on the high seas and this book always sparks them back up.
A Great Book.......2006-11-06
Vigor's book is an excellent place to start for anyone looking for a good, cheap world cruiser. It would take an adventurous spirit to cross oceans in any of these boats, particularly the two Cals mentioned, but one would not have to live a cruelly Spartan existence aboard them. The simplicity of traveling small eliminates the constant hassle of ice makers, generators and other expensive, power-hungry, time-consuming gear that will likely break down anyway. As I read, I found myself falling in love with whichever design Vigor was speaking of at the moment. I think there would be a real audience for another book, a book covering the small sailboats he doesn't mention here, the Bayfield 25 the Cheoy Lee, and others that one reviewer suggested. He could call it: Twenty MORE Small Sailboats to Take You Anywhere. I'm sure Vigor could come up with more suggestions many haven't considered. Probably everyone who bought the first book would buy the second. I know I would as I plan an upgrade from my small Vagabond sloop. By the way, Vigor has a charming writing style which makes the book fun to read whether you're an experienced offshore sailor or just a dreamer.

Customer Reviews:
Save your Money.......2004-07-15
We bought this map because of the wonderful map they had for Paris. This map was terrible. It did not have many of the smaller streets. Do yourself a favor, by a "Time Out" guidebook for London. Their map was excellent; as it should be Time Out is headquartered there.
Not Worth It!.......2004-02-18
Having been to London twice and still not seeing it all, I bought this map after losing my trusted map. It is sturdy and easy to handle, but very confusing and not in any georaphical order. I would hate to be a lost tourist in London for the first time relying on this unreliable map.
Concise and Very Useful.......2004-01-15
This is an excellent map of London. Evidently some of the tube information is a bit out of date, but aside from that minor quibble, it is a very sturdy and utilitarian map. I like that it is an accordion fold laminated card format, as it is eminently durable and near waterproof. It would be very difficult to damage.
It is particularly good to gain a 'lay of the land', particularly in the planning stages of a trip. It is quite easy to visualize where you will want to stay, visit, walk and ride. I like that it has a nice 'London walking tour' outlined, and has all prominent landmarks and points of interest clearly labeled. There is also an excellent and complete index, map of West End theatres, an inset map of inner London, and an underground map.
Overall, for initial trip and route planning as well as navigating London's sights, this is an excellent map at a bargain price!
Must Have.......2003-11-21
Just got back from London. I thought the map was excellent. It's very durable and fits in your pocket. All sights are laid out and it also includes a tube map. I also was in Paris and had that Lonely Planet map too. Both were indispensible.
Older map but still pretty good.......2003-03-27
The map is a fantastic map for your first time in London. The only gripes are that the map is 4 years old, and doesn't reflect London's new area code, nor does it have updated Tube maps. The solution is to just grab an updated Tube map from any Underground station. Not a big deal, but still a major gripe.
But Lonely Planet maps are fantastic - they include walking tours and every major point of interest is covered.

Book Description
"This book tries to understand the rise and fall of consumerism. For marketers and service providers alike, a consuming read." --Business Today "The Unmanageable Consumer is an excellent volume that guides the reader through some of the most impenetrable thickets of consumer theory, safely negotiating the weird as well as the familiar. It is often engrossing, never lifeless, and always illuminating." --Colin Brown in Consumer Policy Review Consumption and concepts of "the consumer" sit at the center of current academic, political, and environmental debates. The premise of this provocative book, a tour-de-force in its breadth of coverage and analysis, focuses on the fact that different traditions have constructed different representations of the consumer, each having its own specificity. Beginning with a historical overview of the evolution of contemporary Western consumerism, The Unmanageable Consumer successfully analyzes the different meanings of consumerism over time. Succeeding chapters then present distinctive portraits of "the consumer," including the consumer as chooser, communicator, identity-seeker, and rebel. In an informative discussion of the fragmentation, volatility, and confusions of Western consumerism, the authors achieve their goal of defining "the unmanageable consumer." This book is essential reading for courses in marketing, organization theory, management studies, and cultural studies. The Unmanageable Consumer is a timely and accessible volume covering a wide range of perspectives.

Book Description
By the late 1970s, scholars and journalists were quick to proclaim the dawn of a new era--the Age of the Pacific. The 1980s--with the economic growth of Japan and the "Four Dragons," the industrialization of several Southeast Asian states, the growth of new industries on the West Coast of North America and decline of industry in the U.S. Midwest and Northeast, and the collapse of centrally planned economies--seemed to confirm this prognosis. Yet, despite consensus on these issues, there are still questions regarding the future directions of an impending Pacific Century. This contributed volume considers those questions from a world-historical perspective, with one chapter from the viewpoint of a friendly critic of that perspective. The work opens with an introductory section, including Palat's introductory overview and a consideration of the amorphous nature of the term "Pacific Rim." Part II continues to analyze the changing patterns of the relational networks along Asia's Pacific parimeters as integral parts of the ongoing restructuring of the capitalist world-economy, while Part III examines the individual trajectories of two Asian giants--India and China. The final section explores how changes in the patterning of production processes have contoured the nature of antisystemic movements in the 1980s.
Customer Reviews:
Thick, yet perceptive.......2005-10-29
I have found this book not only hard to read but also spattered with tones of religion that were disturbing. It was difficult to wade through. And yet I have to say that Schauberger's theories about a natural energy in water are very perceptive and demonstrate an awareness of river systems and water movement understood by only a handful of people still today. I have worked on river restoration and with water and have done so for a number of years (...) and was looking to increase my understanding of the natural energy in water. Does it absorb into the body more readily? Is it healthier for us to drink? Does it cleanse itself of pollutants as some suggest? I didn't find the answers int this though I found these suggestions. I have since experimented with products based on Schauberger's work and am most intrigued with what I experience.
As I say the book is thick and deep and difficult to read, at least that's my experience of it. And yet it contains perceptions that the serious student of water will wish to learn. Not for the novice or casual inquisitor.
Another Great Book about Viktor Schauberger.......2002-04-06
This book has more details in it than Living Energies but by no means does it explain exactly how Viktor created his mystical healing water that cured many disorders. If anyone wants to be a great water researcher or just knowledgeable on water they should read and re-read this book 4-5 times and then read in-between the lines. A great book if you want to learn about water. No-ONE today even comes close to Viktor Schauberger, he was the Water King.
The nature of water.......2001-05-24
This is the first book of the "Eco-Technology" series, and as so, gives you the foundation of the therories presented by Vikto Schauberger, and amplified by Callum Coats. It DOES contain quite alot of previous information written in Living Energies (Coat's first Schauberger book), however, the discussion and the text is much more thoroughly covered. The substance of water, water supply, deep-sea water, the consequences of drinking purely mechanically treated water, notes on the secrets of water, high-frequency water, the pulsation and healing power of water, river regulation, groundwater tables, temperature and movement of water...notice my use of the word WATER. Yes, this book is about water, but, by reading it, just wait until you discover what you DID NOT know about "water". It is a very good start, and as I said, a foundation for understanding the theories of Viktor Schauberger.
Long on Theory, Short on Practicality.......2000-02-25
I enjoyed the book, but was looking for information on purification of water with a vortex. From the table of contents, it seemed to be present. I found no practical, hands-on advice. I'm a MotherEarthNews type, not NewAge, so I was disappointed.
