Customer Reviews:
Disappointed.......2001-11-08
As some of the other reviews have stated, this book is not a bad place to start, but it comes up well short of delivering on its promises. The highlights on the front cover of the book state that "advanced reporting concepts" are covered. I disagree. This book barely covers the basics. On page 239 the author briefly mentions Functional Areas without Logical Databases, but then claims that "advanced ABAP programming skills are required for this type of functional area creation." I have no ABAP programming experience but frequently use this method for my queries. If you have basic knowledge of the tables that contain your data its not that difficult. This is the true power of queries. A reasonably experienced user can meet his or her own reporting needs.
If you're just getting started with queries this book will give you the basics, but you'll need to find other sources (or teach yourself) to really take advantage of their potential.
Really good book, teaches you everything in a simple way.......2001-10-12
Hi, we tried to register for classes at SAP for the ABAP Query and we were told there were none. We bought 2 copies of the book and have properly setup the tool and are writing our own reports. It was very well written with good examples for both business readers and programmers (for the more advanced stuff). Would recommend A++
Not Bad for Beginers.......2001-03-22
This book is good to start with. However it spends too much space in getting people familiar with the SAP theory and does not do much for SAP practice. You learn how to build a query, which is not a report but a bunch of data. I left with the impression that if I want to build a report I have one of the tree options; Call a programmer Output the data into an external database (i.e. Access) Buy another software. Hope this is not true. Again getting familiar with concepts like functional areas and functional groups is important.
Expected more than I get.......2000-09-13
I have expected more from this book. I was especially interested in HR section (ABAP query for this module is slightly different than for others), but there was nothing more than just basic staff. If you don't know anything or very little about ABAP query you can buy it. There is just little bit about reporting tree, how to create, change, etc it, nothing about interesting reports you may use. Few paragraphs are just for SAP beginners and few about staff like creating form letters in Word or about add-ons reporting tools like ARGUS. I think that just half of this book is useful somehow - this is a part about ABAP query.
Wish SAP Offered a Class on This. . ........2000-07-03
We didn't even know that SAP had an end user reporting tool. We heard about the ABAP Query through the newgroups and we had trouble setting it up and SAP does not offer any training classes on it or on setting it up. Our company found this book (also on a recommendation from the newsgroup) and we were able to setup up the tool and teach all the end users (over 1800 in multiple locations in US and Malaysia) to write their own reports. Book is great I recommend it to all companies that have SAP and want their end users to be able to create their own reports.

These review articles by outstanding specialists cover the present status of the observations of the spectrum and of the anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background radiation. Experimental developments, data analysis and related theoretical aspects are also treated. The idea is to review and discuss at a level accessible to non-specialised astronomers and graduate students the most recent developments in this field as well as the future perspectives for astrophysics and cosmology in particular.

Great Guide to Fish behavior.......2000-08-27
This is a great condensed version of reef fish behavior. It is exceptionally well organized and easy to understand. I find it useful in guiding at the Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium, in Sarasota, FL. I am also a diver and appreciate knowing about the creatures I see on the reef. It makes the dives much more interesting and meaningful.
a brief but well-written introduction to the subject.......1998-12-04
This book will provide a basic scientific framework for tropical divers who want to be more than just diving tourists. It covers the different reef zones and the interaction between them, provides an overview of the different animal families, explains the food chain and the interaction between plant and animal life, and describes the differences in feeding behavior between grazers, bottom feeders, nighttime hunters, and daytime hunters. All in a compact, clear format that can be easily polished off in a 4 hour plane ride. My only criticism is that this book, like most of the Pisces guides, is no more substantial than an issue of a good magazine.

Also featured are great shopping destinations, from local craft shops and music stores to Cajun food finds and voodoo memorabilia, and a range of hotels for every budget, from five-star to hostel.

Book Description
Poor girls.
Lydia is not used to working for her money. But having money? She’s used to that—and lots of it. Now that she’s in La-La Land, Lydia will do whatever it takes to maintain the L.A. lifestyle she was born to have. If it means she has to tell a few little lies to get there, well, a Hollywood girl’s gotta do what a Hollywood girl’s gotta do, right?
Rich Boys.
Being with Jonathan is playing with fuego. Everything about him spells trouble for Esme, from his trendy hybrid car to his expensive clothes to his so-called ex, Mackenzie. What’s worse is it seems that he wants to keep Esme hidden away, a secret. Doesn’t a guy who likes you want to show you off? Unless you’re just being used.
Richer Girls.
Anyone who’s anyone will be at Fab, the exclusive party that wraps up L.A.’s fashion week. That’s why Platinum—neurotic music superstar and Kiley’s new boss—is desperate to snag an invite. Kiley has the unlikely power to make it happen . . . or say good-bye to her California summer.
Customer Reviews:
Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2007-01-21
As THE NANNIES series rolls along, seventeen-year-old Kiley finds herself struggling to survive the craziness of being the nanny employed by rock superstar Platinum. She must hang in there, however, lest her dream "to graduate from high school in California so that she can attend Scripps Institution of Oceanography as an in-state resident" be shattered.
Kiley's friends, Lydia and Esme, are nannies for other prominent families in L.A., and each girl faces her own difficulties. Lydia was born into money, but her parents decided to move the family from their home in Texas to the Amazon basin to do missionary work when she was only eight years old. Until she moved back to the United States to live with her aunt and her girlfriend, Lydia's only knowledge of the rich, famous, and shallow came from the magazines she was able to confiscate from visitors to the bush. Now, she isn't about to let her life in the States go, no matter what she has to do to keep it.
Esme, on the other hand, has a completely different problem: She is sleeping with her boss's son. Not only does the situation put her job in jeopardy, it is also a point of constant guilt for Esme, who has a boyfriend back home. Besides, she is only the hired help: sleeping with the boss's son is a degrading road to nowhere.
Mayer occasionally tries to make the point that money isn't everything: "She was willing to work. Marym was willing to get paid for the looks that she'd done nothing to earn. There was something very unfair about it" (p. 49). Overall, however, the story is shallow, name-dropping, and requires no real thought to read. But is that a bad thing?
THE NANNIES series is not meant to be ground-breaking literature. It is written to entertain, to be fun, and to be a series of lighthearted "dirt" novels for pre-Jackie Collins fans...and I happen to love Jackie Collins. Mayer accomplishes just what she intends, and she does it well; if I were a fifteen-year-old girl, I would read this, breathless, in one sitting.

The Nannies: Friends with Benefits.......2006-05-30
Just like the first book in the series, Friends with Benefits is filled with the same cliches found in The Clique, Gossip Girl, and The It Girl. Girls shop and go to parties, meet boys, have a misunderstanding, then get back together with said boys. However, I was still greatly entertained by the second novel, and read it in a couple hours. I highly recommend it, but read the first book first!
The nannies.......2006-05-24
This book was awesome! its was just as good as the first one, probably better. Theres a lot more action and a lot more problems. Platinum gets even crazier causing a whole lot of trouble at just the wrong time. Will Esme end up with Junior? or Jonathen? and what happens to Junior that makes Esme second guess Johnathen? Ready for the juicy details...read the nannies friends with benefits and find out. Youll be hooked!

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Managing Your Money shows that any numbskull can master personal finance. In this second edition, a father-and-daughter writing team, Robert K. Heady and Christy Heady, give readers the best advice culled from their many years of experience in consumer rights and money management. The Headys believe that money must be managed for the long haul and that there are no quick ways to build wealth. The guide is easy to read, witty, and scornful of the hype dished out by banks and other peddlers of personal finance. It provides a plethora of personal-finance tips for consumers, including how to get the best deal on a mortgage, pay off debt, and bank online. The authors expose financial pitfalls such as bank-sold mutual funds, dealer financing for motor vehicles, extended warranties, and those dreaded bank fees. A full chapter is devoted to the evils of credit cards, which they feel is the biggest ripoff in the financial world. The writers contend that the toughest thing about saving is making the decision to do it. You should get going by putting aside a little amount of money each month through a mutual fund or dividend reinvestment plan. "The whole idea of managing money is to save a dollar here and there and then take that dollar and build it into two," they write. It shouldn't take a rocket scientist to understand that. --Dan Ring

If You Know Nothing About Financing; Start Here..........2003-07-06
This has the basic knowledge need to manage your finacing ranging from simple budgeting, credit, stocks and mutual funds, Certificate of Deposit, how to read the market and the prime rate and what it all means. Also, it provides the mental mindset you need to manage and spend money properly, without resorting to short term spending splurges. There's tables for calcuating college funds, morgages, and retirements but most importantly how to avoid the many traps and scams many vendors use to make money off of you without providing any extra services. The one thing I found somewhat worrysome is the way the authors protrayed the banks and other institutions to the point of scaring the reader into being nearly paranoid of all financial instistutions. The fees these institutions charge are describe in the book with good details. A good "how to avoid pitfalls" book.
The Complete Idiot's Guide to Managing Your Money, Second Ed.......2001-06-04
I love this book! Before reading this book, I wondered how anyone could ever save money in the world today. It has helped me to mangage my money easily. An easy to read book, which I use now as a reference whenever I have a question concerning my personal finances. I finally started a 401K, bought a house, a new car, and I am finally learning to save some money, instead of living paycheck to paycheck.
Very Helpful!.......2001-05-25
This book gave me invaluable advice regarding my finances. I would highly recommend it to anyone and everyone! I have adopted many strategies in the book to save for a rainy day. Thank you, and when are you coming out with another edition?
The Complete Idiots Guide to Managing Your Money.......2001-05-25
This book did a great job of explaining to the average person how to save, invest and avoid the common financial pitfalls we so often make. It was done with humor and wit, which is a breath of fresh air in this often hard to understand, jargon loaded industry. This book is beneficial to anyone who has thought about developing a financial plan but does not know how or where to begin. It is an easy read, fun and should be a required reading for the masses of people buried in credit card debt! Great job!!
Highly Recommended for Everyone.......2001-05-25
Anyone can easily understand and make a decision about their personal financial future, and also what the best approach for getting out of debt. Good analogies-

Book Description
By adopting a wide-ranging perspective, this book addresses the key issues relevant to contemporary China, providing a valuable tool with which to understand the challenges and opportunities facing political and economic actors, both domestic and foreign, over the next decades. The book addresses key issues now subject to considerable debate, such as sustainable growth, the imbalances in society deriving from growing inequalities and environmental threats. Concluding this section is an overview of how Chinese-US relations, and China's geo-political role at the international level, have evolved at the turn of the 21st century. The book then goes on to analyze those issues linked to the impacts of recent welfare system reforms. In particular, those impacts on the health care and pension systems, growing unemployment deriving from reform of state-owned enterprises and the related phasing out of the `cradle-to-grave' welfare system. The closing chapter looks at the potential provided by a fast-growing insurance market in conjunction with WTO opening measures, to assess whether increased opportunities are likely to arise for foreign insurance suppliers. Scholars of political economy and international economics as well as academics and researchers of Asian - particularly Chinese- studies, will find this book of great value.

Book Description
All over the world proactive public policy in business is now under siege. Economists and policy-makers claim that the era of `Big Government' is over. However, nobody denies the fact that government has historically played a critical role in modern economic development. Given the profound changes of public policy agendas, this is an appropriate time to review the dynamic interaction between government policies and industrial developments from an international and historical perspective. Focusing on the so-called `Golden Age of Capitalism' the 1950s and 1960s and studying prime-mover countries (the US and the UK), followers (Germany, France, and Italy), and latecomers (Japan and Korea), Competing Policies for Competitiveness addresses the crucial questions to be asked; what appropriate roles should government be assigned, and which government actions are useful public policy and which represent unnecessary and harmful intervention? The book also attempts to utilize the Japanese case as an analytical reference against which experiences of other economies are examined.
Book Description
Clive PontingÂ's original and provocative history of human civilizationÂnow in a thoroughly revised, expanded, and updated edition
Years ahead of its time, Clive Ponting captivated readers with A Green History of the World, his study of great civilizations and the causes of their fall. Using the Roman empire as its central example, this classic work reveals how overexpansion and the exhaustion of available natural resources have played key roles in the collapse of all great cultures in human history. With an argument of urgent relevance to our modern society, A Green History of the World offers a provocative and illuminating view of human history and its relationship to the environment.

Haven't finished it yet. But I did stop in wonder for a good long while when I read that Plato (PLATO!) had given a good long description of the deforestation and erosion of Greece.
It covers more ground than the (similar point of view and many years later) Jared Diamond Collapse. For instance, in a later chapter that I skimmed early on, he talks about epidemics and sickness. Our best health care in the world, in Ponting's view, is mostly following, not altogether successfully, in the footsteps of basic sanitation--i.e., public health and nutrition trump treatment for disease.
I expect that I don't, and won't as I continue to read, agree with everything he says. But he does makes one think.
incomplete facts, needs an editor, cant stay on subject.......2004-11-30
man abuses our environment
there, now you dont have to sit throug 400 pages of ranting about how statistics are proving we destroy our environment. If you need this book to realize we are a destructive race; well then maybe you should read it, its so repetative you are bound to get the idea.
very good overview and introduction to the subject.......2004-02-04
Clive Ponting's book provides a very good introduction to the subject. It is well written and serves as an excellent starting point, introducing the important questions and providing thought provoking conclusions.
Comments that the book is inaccurate regarding Easter Island are illogical. As Ponting points out, the very first Europeans to arrive on the island found a society already devastated by the environmental degradation that it failed to prevent. The diseases inadvertantly spread to the Easter Islanders through this first European contact were not a primary cause of the downfall of the island civilization.
much good info, but incomplete facts.......2003-05-06
When I read this book for my college environmental science class, I thought it was fascinating and ground-breaking. Picking it up 6 years later, however, I realize how much is missing. I re-read the first chapter on Easter Island, and wondered, "where is the account of disease?" Contrary to Ponting's claims, the Easter Island civilization did NOT collapse as a result of over-use of resources! In fact, it recovered from this mistake, only to be devastated by syphilis and small pox, brought by the Europeans.
Instead of using Easter Island as a warning to the rest of the world, Ponting should use it as a message of hope. If Easter Islanders could recover from severe resource degradation- so could we. The key is recognizing the problem in time and working actively to resolve it.
History from the Environment's Point of View.......2002-03-20
Clive Ponting's subtitle is slightly misleading, as this book is less about the history of civilization's collapse than a history of civilization's influence on the environment. This is a thorough and interesting study of how humans have changed or damaged their natural surroundings from the earliest hunter-gatherer days through the modern post-Industrial world. It seems that any modification of the environment has unintended and unexpected consequences down the road. Of course in the past few had the time or the vision to anticipate these consequences, and we are now living with the results of centuries of pollution, salinization, and general degradation. This is not a polemic but a well-argued study which asks us to consider whether our effect on the natural world has been more for good or ill. It is a good precursor to ideas later developed further in Jared Diamond's Guns, Germs, and Steel, among others.
Customer Reviews:
Great Introduction to the world's environmental history.......2002-12-29
This is an excellent book for someone who wants to get a general overview of which human activities, at what time and region, have contributed and led to the current environmental situation. Ponting concentrates on a few topics, mainly agriculture and the rise of settled societies, industry, the rise of western civilization and the creation of the third world. Most of the book is very general, but some details are given with respect to dates, quantities of trade, acres of forest cleared, and other well publicized and known factors. All in all, it is an excellent read - although there is much criticism of Christian beliefs as a major factor in the beginnings of environmental destruction, which is an untrue statement. No one has ever lived on the planet without doing at least a minimal amount of direct or indirect environmental damage, no matter their religion. He doesn't address the fact that environmentalism is a relatively new science, and that all people up until 200 years ago viewed nature as something to overcome, not protect.
