The collapse in the US of Enron and Worldcom, together with their auditors, Arthur Andersen, has focused the public spotlight on the company audit and made it a highly controversial aspect of the accountant's work. In Britain, the recent legal action by Equitable Life against Ernst and Young is only the latest in a long line of scandals at BCCI, Maxwell, and the Barings bank, among many others. A History of Auditing for the first time lifts the lid off the work of the auditors, and details how historically they have got themselves into the present situation.
The book draws on new evidence generated by a postal questionnaire and oral history among auditors both past and present, together with an analysis of company reports and exhaustive use of contemporary textbooks and articles, making frequent frequent comparisons with American practice. The resulting history traces the evolution of the auditing process from its leisurely Victorian beginnings where armies of clerks checked and ticked everything intheir client's books, to the transformation in the 1960s when, with the growing scale of clients auditing became more a matter of checking a client's systems rather than the records themselves. The changes in the 1980s are also documented when because of the growing pressure on audit fees from clients meeting the threat of global competition, auditors began to put their faith in such nebulous techniques as risk assessment. Alongside all these changes auditors also had to cope with the advent of computerization which robbed them of the audit trail.
This comprehensive history will be a useful reference tool for accounting, business and economic historians and will also be an enlightening read for all those with an interest in auditing procedures.

The California experience provides a graphic demonstration of the successes and failures of both the tobacco industry and public health forces. It shows how public health advocates slowly learned to control the terms of the debate and how they discovered that simply establishing tobacco control programs was not enough, that constant vigilance was necessary to protect programs from a hostile legislature and governor. In the end, the California experience proves that it is possible to dramatically change how people think about tobacco and the tobacco industry and to rapidly reduce tobacco consumption. Best Political Science Book of the Year.......2000-05-08

I could hardly put this book down. The battle being fought is truly a life and death matter, alliances and strategies evolve on both sides, and the Tobacco Industry uses their multi-million war chests to mislead the public over and over and over again. Even when you think you can relax after a victory by the anti-tobacco forces, in the next chapter the Tobacco Industry is lurking behind yet another door with a butcher's cleaver, which ends up being wielded by tobacco funded politicians and the California Medical Association to cut tobacco education funds and to weaken the anti-tobacco media campaign. Really this book is about much more than California and its battle with the tobacco industry. It is the best book I've ever read about why we need campaign finance reform and effective sunshine laws. You are shown all the nitty-gritty details, the back room deals, the closed-door bargaining. You'll emerge from this book well-prepared to detect lies in future wars, and to read between-the-lines in daily newspaper coverage.

Really nice book!.......2007-08-02

The book shows step-by-step instructions on how to do the katas. If you've learned the katas before, you will love it. If you've never learned them before, you may find a little difficult to do the more advanced ones. A video will help you more in those cases because of the details that even well described are hard to do without watching someone doing it in front of you. I can't think of a better way to teach katas using a book, though and because of that, I think it's still worth buying the book and if you feel that you need, buy a video to help with the harder katas. Good luck!

Necessary to keep tradition.......2007-06-08

If nothing else, the kata should be the common factor between schools of the same type. The 25 Shotokan Kata book by Shojiro Sugiyama serves as the guideline for Shotokan karate-ka. Nishiyama sensei gives approval to the forms and explains a few nuances that articulate his concepts of body mechanics. The book is a treasure.

This is an excellent resource to support lessons taught in class. The presentation of the kata in clear and easily understood drawings with supporting text is the best I have found in various books on kata from the Shotokan school. I recommend it to anyone looking for a text to support their study of kata or simply as an addition to your martial arts library.

Master Sugiyama illustrations are easy to follow. I especially like that the transitional hand/foot preparation into each move are shown. The use of compass direction also makes clear which direction you are supposed to be facing at any given point. I often use this book for self-teaching or reviewing upper level black belt katas such as gojushiho sho & dai, unsu etcetera.
It's almost time for me to get a fresh copy of this book. I've taped my current copy one too many times!!

Couldn't Put it Down.......2005-12-05

Even though I didn't read The Evil Twin first (and still haven't), I loved this book. I honestly couldn't put it down. It was just impossible, especially since I was a little scared. I started on it in the afternoon and honestly stayed up late in the night reading it because I knew that if I didn't read the ending first, I'd be too scared to sleep. When the ending of the book finally came up, a huge grin broke out over my face, and I was so happy that I talked to my dad about it because he was up too. I hadn't talked to him for a while before that. Lol, it makes you do things you wouldn't normally do. The ending just had me so freakin' relieved. I love this book!

ok usually i just read sweet valley jr. high but i found this in my school library and omg! i loved it i couldnt put it down ! this is the best book iv ever read iv never read the first eveil twin but im going too anyway fans this book rocks you HAVE to read it even my mom read it and she bawled! whoo!

Good book, too many plotholes though............2002-04-18

This book is the sequel for "The Evil Twin" It's about Margo's twin sister Nora who comes to Sweet Valley at first to search for her twin and then she realizes she is actually dead, but by some reason, that can only happen on books and movies, Margo is really alive and they both plot to take over both of the teens lives!

This book was okay not as good as the original, though plus there was too many plotholes from the first book:

1. This is really 2 years after the Margo thing, not one year, last year was the year Jessica was engaged to that Jeremy guy and he tried to kill her or something.

2. Even if this book takes place one year after the Margo thing, why are the twins still 16 year old high school juniors??

3. When Nora's stepmom is telling her the history about her and Margo, she says Margo was given away when she was 3 or 4, but in the original book, it states Margo was abandoned as a baby.

4. Since Nora is supposed to be just 17, wasn't it illegal for her stepmom to throw her out the way she did?

5. If Margo could have survived the way she did, which in reality is not possible, where had she been the past year(s)? That wasn't explained at all

Other then that the book is not bad, but not up to the original either.

The Best Sweet Valley Book Ever!!!.......2001-10-10

This is probably the best Sweet Valley book ever! It has everything-romance, suspence, drama. I just couldn't put it down and have read it multiple times. It is definately a book you just can't miss, especially if you are a Sweet Valley fan.

great medical research, and a devastating critique of "production line" medicine.......2007-03-03

Roger Williams was a professor of Medicine at the University of Texas - Austin, who wrote this book about the differences that pathologists and other doctors routinely find in human beings.

Unless you have a rather uncommon interest in anatomical or biochemical trivia, the literal contents of this book will probably not interest you. After all, how many people are interested by how many different stomach shapes there are, and how common they are? But if you are -at all- interested by medicine, and the more philosophical questions that medicine raises, the implications of the contents of this book will probably be of great interest to you, and quite likely prompt you to reconsider some of your beliefs and understanding of medicine.

Williams' exhaustive lists of all the differences in the human body is in stark contradiction to the reductionistic medical thinking, where diseases are often diagnosed by checklist-based symptom clusters and then treated with one size fits all "blockbuster" drugs. After having read, perhaps at times even slogged through, all the differences that Williams lists, you are left with no room to doubt that the differences among human beings are so great that medicine ought to be geared towards noting the differences among humans, and devising individualized treatment regimens that take advantage of these differences, rather than forcing human beings into "one size fits all" "production line" medicine, as often happens when medicine is reduced to standardized treatment algorithms that (sometimes) flowchart into one of a handful of "blockbuster" medications, based on studies reported by researchers oftentimes wearing the rosiest of sunglasses. If you base an endeavor on flawed or inadequate premises, the results of your efforts can only transcend these flaws through serendipitous (and unlikely) errors.

Medicine, as Hippocrates already wrote, is ultimately an art, and not a science; this book provides a timely and useful reminder of this fact of life to anyone with a true interest in or passion for medicine. Heartily recommended.

Biochemical Individuality.......2001-03-01

Biochemical Individuality was first published by Dr. Roger J. Williams in 1956. It has just been reissued with a new introduction by Jeffrey S. Bland, Ph.D. Dr. Bland explains that Dr. Williams was the first to recognize all humans differ biochemically from others. He says that Dr. Williams was also the first to recognize that "nutritional status can influence the expression of genetic characteristics."

Dr. Williams conducted his own studies, as well as drawing on the work of others, to show that each of us is different. One chapter describes differences in anatomy, outlining how even such vital organs as hearts and stomachs vary in size, shape, and physical location from person to person.

The chapter on pharmacology explains how, even though the chemistry of each is known, drugs effect people in different ways, due to differences in body chemistry. That's why what works for one person doesn't necessarily work for another.

Dr. Williams says that "while the same physical mechanisms and the same metabolic processes are operating in all human bodies, the structures are sufficiently diverse [that] the sum total of all the reactions taking place in one individual's body may be very different from those taking place in the body of another individual of the same age, sex, and body size."

His observations led Dr. Williams to theorize that each individual also had unique nutritional needs, and that determining and meeting those needs would help combat disease.

Although written in academic language, Biochemical Individuality is of interest all readers who recognize "there is no such thing as a truly 'normal' individual" and that people have "unique biochemical profiles based upon their own genetic structure, nutrition, and environment."

A Nutrition Classic That Everyone Should Read.......1999-03-19

This is one of the most important books written in the history of nutrition. A must for everyone who wants to appreciate how one diet, one supplement regime, and one food pyramid do not fit all. We all have greatly differing needs, and Dr. Williams documents all of this eloquently and convincingly. This book should be read by everyone who cares about their health. It will make them realize that only when they understand their individual nutrition needs and meet them can they have optimal health. Thank you, Keats, for reprinting this timeless book!
