    Book Description

The Sixth International Conference on Accounting Education was held just prior to the Thirteenth World Congress of Accountants. Hosted by the Science Council of Japan, the Japan Accounting Association, and the Union of National Economics Associations in Japan, in cooperation with the International Association on Accounting Education and Research, the 1987 conference marked the 25th anniversary of the founding of such conferences. The main theme of this conference was Accounting Education and Research Toward the Promotion of International Understanding of Economic Progress. The twentieth century has seen increasing interaction and growing interdependency between the various nations of the world, stressing the need for greater cooperation at the international level. At the same time, however, individual nations have their own particular sociocultural identities, making for differences that must not be overlooked. The purpose of the conference was to provide an opportunity for an exchange of ideas to serve as an impetus to a greater flow of information resulting in better understanding and increased respect on an international level.

              Book Description

Since its launch in 1991, the Yohkoh satellite has been returning unprecedented observations of solar flares and the dynamic solar corona. This book is a collection of papers presented at a meeting held in: Yoyogi, Tokyo, on the occasion of Yohkoh's fifth anniversary of operation. The papers constitute a summary of observations and results over the five years, including contributions based on data from Yohkoh's hard and soft X-ray telescopes and its spectrometer experiments. The five years of data, covering approximately one-half of a solar cycle, reveal a fresh perspective on solar science, with a new picture of solar flares and the active Sun emerging. Also, for the first time there are extensive results from Yohkoh observations of the Sun during the solar minimum period.
This wide-ranging volume will be of interest to workers in solar physics and X-ray astronomy. It also contains material appropriate for supplemental reading for graduate students in solar physics.

I was looking for more specific information about individual animals/wildlife. This book is more general in it's information.

4 out of 5 stars He loved it-.......2000-08-17

I bought this book as a gift for my 9 year old nephew. When it arrived, I was pleased to see that it was a hard cover book, and the color photographs and maps were great. It seemed to me that kids would have a pretty easy time finding what they're looking for. The information is presented in short segments with headings so you can pick and choose what you want to read. Jack had wanted a book on animals, but I wasn't sure if there would be enough "animal" information in it for him.

As it turned out, he loved the book. He especially liked the variety of maps (which were easy to follow), as well as the photos of animals (both familiar and unfamiliar to him). The book was organized by area of the world, and he seemed to like that organization. He and his brother spent quite a bit of time looking through it, and he said he'd be able to use it for school projects.

Does a trip to the Maruba Resort & Jungle Spa in Belize sound appealing? Or the Grand Lido Sans Souci in Jamaica? How about the Breitenbush Hot Springs Retreat in Oregon, known as the "Esalen of the Northwest," with reiki, Thai massage, herbal wraps, hydrotherapy, and craniosacral therapy available to soothe your soul? Fodor's Healthy Escapes, here in its sixth edition, is your ticket to feeling pampered, healthy, and fit. Spas across the U.S. and the Caribbean are profiled, including facilities, services available, accommodations, rates, descriptions of atmosphere and typical meals, and directions.

Not every spa is geared toward solipsistic luxury; many offer hard-core conditioning programs for athletes in training or nutritional and lifestyle counseling for those struggling with cardiac disease, obesity, or other serious conditions. To help you find the retreat that best meets your needs, the editors have therefore separated them into six classifications: luxury pampering, nutrition and diet, sports conditioning, holistic health, medical wellness, and mineral springs. While many of the spas profiled here are pricey, keeping with what you'd expect from a Fodor's guide, some are more low key, such as Maine's Northern Pines Health Resort, which starts at $115 per person. Maps to help you locate the spas come in handy. The glossary is an added bonus, with definitions of healing modalities you may never have heard of (such as panchakarma), massage techniques (including shiroabhyanganasya), and schools of fitness (the increasingly popular Pilates Method). --Erica Jorgensen

4 out of 5 stars Best spa book ever!!.......2001-07-28

I can't tell you how often I have used this book in the year I've owned it. It describes every major spa in the US and Mexico so well. The categories is uses to classify are great. I've sent copies to several friends so we can plan getaways together. Even if you just want to fantasize about going to a spa, it's a great reference.

                              2 out of 5 stars Fodor's Healthy Escapes.......2000-07-19

I purchased this book based on previous experience with Fodor's books. The categories were helpful for a quick determination of the type of facility. The descriptions however seemed more like advertisements from the various facilities rather than informed experiences from the writers. The rates were not up to date and there are no web sites listed. Unbelievable for a travel book published in 2000!

                                  Book Description

In the present electronic torrent of MTV and teen flicks, Nintendo and Air Jordan advertisements, consumer culture is an unmistakably important -- and controversial -- dimension of modern childhood. Historians and social commentators have typically assumed that the child consumer became significant during the postwar television age. But the child consumer was already an important phenomenon in the early twentieth century. The family, traditionally the primary institution of child socialization, began to face an array of new competitors who sought to put their own imprint on children's acculturation to consumer capitalism. Advertisers, children's magazine publishers, public schools, child experts, and children's peer groups alternately collaborated with, and competed against, the family in their quest to define children's identities.

At stake in these conflicts and collaborations was no less than the direction of American consumer society -- would children's consumer training rein in hedonistic excesses or contribute to the spread of hollow, commercial values? Not simply a new player in the economy, the child consumer became a lightning rod for broader concerns about the sanctity of the family and the authority of the market in modern capitalist culture. Lisa Jacobson reveals how changing conceptions of masculinity and femininity shaped the ways Americans understood the virtues and vices of boy and girl consumers -- and why boys in particular emerged as the heroes of the new consumer age. She also analyzes how children's own behavior, peer culture, and emotional investment in goods influenced the dynamics of the new consumer culture.

Raising Consumers is a provocative examination of the social, economic, and cultural forces that produced and ultimately legitimized a distinctive children's consumer culture in the early twentieth century.

                                      Book Description

"The only way the masses seem to be able to identify with [Indians] is in the past. My idea is, we're still here, we're a viable people, we have the same heartbreaks, the same successes, the same failures as everybody else does.... We're here yet, but it's like we're invisible, and it seems like it's always kind of been that way."

—Brent Florendo, a Wasco from the Warm Springs Reservation

Established in 1855 on an area one-fifteenth the size of the lands relinquished in return for it, the Warm Springs Reservation in north central Oregon is home to some 3,600 Warm Springs, Wasco, and Paiute Indians, half of whom are under twenty. This book seeks to understand the reservation's inhabitants as a "viable people" who are both visible and vocal as they reflect on their daily lives, their struggles and successes, and their hopes for the future.

Michael Baughman and Charlotte Hadella present extended interviews with seven Indian and two non-Indian members of the community. They discuss issues such as the difficulty of maintaining traditional lifeways centered around hunting, fishing, and gathering; the disruptions caused by alcoholism and diseases such as diabetes; and the need for culturally appropriate education for the young. The authors frame the interviews with explanatory material that covers the reservation's history and relations with white society and its efforts to transmit native languages and cultural traditions to its children.

This book provided a view into the Warm Springs Reservation, whether or not it is a realistic view remains to be seen. The "voices" the authors chose to include in the book were not the best "voices". Some of the people interviewed were newcomers to the reservation, had only lived on the reservation for a short period of time years ago, and a couple were bigots who lived in the border town. Since the authors seemed to focus a lot on educational issues and youth issues, it would make sense to include interviews of youth. None were included. Also lacking in the book were the "voices" of tribal elders and leaders. Where were they? The authors give no explanation for the lack of these "voices". I believe that they would have provided important and informative viewpoints. Perhaps if the authors had included a list of interviews they tried to obtain, I might not have such a harsh opinion of the authors and their work.

                                          Book Description

The ecosystem approach to ecology treats organisms and the physical elements of their environment as components of a single, integrated system. This comprehensive textbook outlines the central processes that characterize terrestrial ecosystems, tracing the flow of water, carbon, and nutrients from their abiotic origins to their cycles through plants, animals, and decomposer organisms. As human activity becomes an increasingly dominant factor in natural processes around the globe, landscape dynamics over time and space have become the focus of recent attention. This book synthesizes current advances in ecology with established theory to offer a complete survey of ecosystem pattern and process in the terrestrial environment. Featuring review questions at the end of each chapter, suggestions for recommended reading, and a glossary of ecological terms, Principles of Terrestrial Ecosystem Ecology will be an important text suitable for use in all courses on ecosystem ecology. Resource managers, land use managers, and researchers will also welcome its thorough presentation of ecosystem essentials. About the Authors F. Stuart Chapin, III is Professor of Ecology at the Institute for Arctic Biology, University of Alaska at Fairbanks. Pamela Matson is Professor in the Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences and the Institute of International Studies, Stanford University; Director of the Earth Systems Degree Program and co-director of the Center for Environmental Science and Policy, Stanford University; and currently serves as president of the Ecological Society of America. Harold A. Mooney is Professor of Environmental Biology at Stanford University.

This textbook is excellent for life science students who want to approach ecology from the point of view of ecosystem functioning. A precise and clear systematic description of ecosystems organisazion is given, from physiology to complex communities organization. It also focuses on the emrgence of new functions and features every time the complexity level increases, which is essential to have a full systematic comprehension of ecosystems. Underlying physical-chemical processes are always taken into considaration, which contributes to easily understand all the general aspects of ecosystem functions. A must read.

a technical book written for ecosystem ecologists but easy to read. I had to get it for a class, but it was well put-together and organized.

This is one heck of a book! I'm very, very impressed. I'm certainly going to use for my courses, and I think it will be used by many others teachers and professor. I think it will find itself along side Schlesinger's Biogeochemistry as a standard textbook for ecologists and global change scientists.

The text is written by some of the best ecologists on the planet, and is very complete and up-to-date. Amazingly, it is also very well written and completely understandable to the average biology student.

I especially like the organization of the book into four major sections: context, mechanisms, patterns, and integration. This works very, very well.

Each chapter is about the right length, with the right level of detail. I also like the use of highlighting, and the list of suggested readings. They work very well.

Overall, this is a fantastic book -- destined to become a classic in the field.

My research is on integration of terrestrial carbon modelling with remote sensing and I was looking for a book which explains different aspects of the terrestrial ecosystem along with latest research results. This book by some of the famous researchers on the subject explains in a very lucid way every aspects of the terrestrial ecosystem while not failing to include the minute yet important details of the same. I found the chapters on carbon input to terrestrial ecosystems, terrestrial production processes and global biogeochemical cycle very stimulating. The book starts with the basic concepts and then go on to dig deeper to help nourish the curiosity with latest findings and reports. Best for begineers in ecosystem ecology or related field to get a crisp and clear idea on complex interlinking of different processes of the earth's terrestrial ecosystem. Additional readings at the end of each chapter would cater the need for the more hungry ones to go deeper. very nicely sequenced and fun to read with excellent drawings/diagrams.
