This book is a great book to help those preparing for the CPA exam. It is helpful with outlines organized by topic with questions following each section. They also provide techniques for passing this horrible test!!

Book Description
Deep-Sky Name Index 2000.0 pulls names of clusters, galaxies, nebulae, and stars together in a handy reference book. It lists all names in an easy-to-use index format with the type of object, constellation in which the object is located, synonyms if any, and accurate epoch 2000.0 coordinates for use with star atlases and telescopes.
Customer Reviews:
Our "Dirty Little Book"........2001-12-30
Many observers refer to certain deep sky objects by their common names. Some objects are referred to by more names than just one. For instance, if you saw a reference to the "Cygnus Loop" in Sky & Telescope magazine, would you know they were talking about the Veil Nebula? Can you recall the NGC numbers associated with the Whirlpool Galaxy? The Messier number? How about the NGC number of Hubble's Variable Nebula (along with its coordinates)? For some advanced and veteran observers these things are seemingly second hand knowledge, and with some degree of cordial jealousy we salute their powers of retention.
It's always an impressive occasion at a star party when someone calls out from the darkness for an NGC number, and a correct response promptly resonates from somewhere else. Things like that usually draw muttered comments from everyone that the responder's brain must be wired with microchips and diodes.
If you're searching through a star chart for an object by its common name, you're going to have a problem. Virtually all charts show objects only by their catalog numbers. So if you need to know the designation for the California Nebula, you'll have to summon help. Call out through the darkness, and hope somebody remembers. But that gets old after a while, and the answers may stop coming back. Does it matter? If it does, and if you have difficulty remembering this kind of stuff (and who doesn't?) then this index will be an important tool for you, and for many others.
The Deep Sky Name Index lists all the common objects, i.e.: - all of the Messiers, their NGC numbers, their coordinates, and common names. It also lists all the most prominent NGC objects, with cross-references to any others, plus their common names and coordinates. Ditto for prominent IC objects. In addition, it lists all the brighter stars by common names, Arabic names, and Bayer designations. Objects are listed both alphabetically, and by their numeric designations. Redundancies are included so you aren't often confronted with "Bode's Galaxy; see M-51".
Objects are listed by type, constellation, synonyms, and epoch 2000 coordinates. At the alphabetic location of each constellation is an itemized list of all common and popular objects, all the brighter stars, their coordinates, and all the different spellings of their Arabic and common names. Moreover, there's the Greek alphabet on page 4, and a complete list of constellations by both nominative and genitive forms starting on page 5. Extremely handy.
The book allows almost any common object to be cross-referenced to its constellation, and to any of its other numeric or common designations. Not every known object is there of course, but the ones of common and popular interest are all represented (a very extensive list).
(NOTE: As an unfair test, I looked for the "Whale Galaxy", a rather esoteric object in Canes Venatici. It was not listed by either its common name or by NGC #4631. There are other omissions, but you're not likely to find another work this handy that includes much more. It would not be possible to include everything, and still be convenient or "handy").
The Deep Sky Name Index can be an extremely useful tool. So useful in fact, that we've assigned it a place on our "Honorable Mention List" of Required Reading for the amateur astronomer. We call it our "Dirty Little Book" because it gets so much use, and is ragged and worn almost beyond recognition. Beginners and novices will appreciate its educational value in bringing to light all the various object names that confront them, and where they are located. Observers more advanced will find it useful for working with charts, and converting familiar but meaningless "names" into proper designations and vital statistics.
Very highly recommended.
Excellent for what it is........2001-10-24
I doubt you'll find yourself reading through this book for entertainment, but it is a very useful book for the amateur astronomer. Can't remember the name of Beta-Algol? Just look it up. Can't remember the Bayer's designation for Alnitak? Its in there. I guess this is the real strength of the book. Being able to crossreference from one catalog designation to another. Stars dominate the book (I would guess because they dominate the other astronomical objects,) but you can find stuff about the more common nebulae and galaxies. I can't remember if the entire NGC catalog is represented at the moment or not. I don't, however, ever remember looking one up in the book and not finding it.
My only complaint would be the cover and binding. As you can see this is a spiral bound notebook (about 6"x8"?), and the cover is a posterboard-like material. I have my doubts as to how well this book is going to hold up for very long.
The book is a handy tool to have, and it is certainly worth the nominal cost.

It includes easy strolls and multiday backbreakers for Bryce, Capital Reef, Arches, Canyonlands, and Zion. In all, it describes 123 hikes in a user-friendly format. Easy-to-read info blips provide data for hike distances, elevations, difficulty ratings, hazards, and in-seasons. Each hike also includes an ample route description and a few tips thrown in for good measure.
Book Description
Zion, Bryce, Capitol Reef, Arches, and Canyonlands offer remote and unspoiled wilderness and perhaps the finest backcountry recreation in the nation. Detailed descriptions of 125 hikes, ranging from brief strolls to demanding, cross-country backpack treks. All are shown on topographic route maps.
Customer Reviews:
Good, but trying to cover too many areas.......2007-01-30
This was a decent guide book, but it really tried to cover too many parks at once. It seems like it covers more family type day hikes and not a lot of backcountry and backpacking trails. We used it to plan hikes in Zion National park and Canyonlands - Needles District. The book recommended a hike in Canyonlands National park that did turn out to be awesome (Chesler Park/Elephant Canyon to Druid Arch).
We also used it to plan a hike to the Subway in Zion. In this case, I wish it had given more detail, as we ended up a little over our heads on this hike. The water was a LOT higher than we expected based on the pics we had seen and information we had. Apparently, the water levels tend to be higher in April due to snow runoff. If the book had given more information, we probably would have never attempted the hike at that time of year to begin with. Oh well, I guess you live and learn, right?
In conclusion, I would recommend this to anyone who is planning to visit one or more of the parks for a short period and wants to hit the hightlights. If you want a more in depth hiking trip to one of the parks, I would recommend getting a more detailed guide book specific to that park.
book for foreigners.......2006-02-28
This book is very usefull for a foreigner travelling throughout USA especially as it's almost impossible to find such a book (in France) that focuses on one US state.
The book contains detailed informations concerning Utah's National Parks. Hikers should appreciate it.
I recommand it with pleasure.
Hikes for evey level of experience.......2002-05-28
We have just returned from hiking & camping in Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Arches And Canyonlands (Island in the Sky area), and found this book to be one of the best of any guide book we have used (over 30 years of hiking). The hike descriptions were so interesting I read them again after doing the hike! The description of how one gets to the trailhead in in a separate section titled "driving to the trailheads", which may cause problems for individuals who don't read scan through the chapters first before deciding on a hike. We found the descriptions of the trees and plantlife on each trail very useful and I would not hesitate to buy another of Ron Atkinson's guide books, they are obviously very well researched.
Wow- Beg, steal or borrow another guidebook.......2001-05-22
Just back from a 9 day backpacking trip in Utah, using both this book and Adkison's book on Escalante. It left me with poor trail descriptions, (scarily) poor or wholly incorrect maps, and an "interesting" (read: madman-style insane) style of giving directions to trailheads. I am by no means new to the outdoors, nor to getting to remote trailheads, routefinding, etc; I can say with a degree of confidence that this is the poorest guidebook I have ever purchased. The second star is given for his "reccomended" hikes, which were, on the whole, generally right on.
Ron Atkinson's Hiking Guide to Utah's Canyon Country.......2000-05-16
Many people think that the best way to experience the unique landscapes of canyon lands parks is to drive through them. But you will have no sense of these places unless you get out of your car and take a walk. You don't have to be a backpacker to experience these places on foot. This is a great book for learning about the opportunities for short, medium and long hikes and for finding the hike that is best for you and your physical condition in Utah's great canyon country parks.

Customer Reviews:
Excelent. .......2007-08-16
It is really the definitive guide for climbing performance. Looks like "how to climb 5.12" with a lot more things. No doubt it is a good guide for who wants to upgrade his/her climb level.
Excellent training book.......2006-02-01
This book delivers what it says, "Training for Climbing". It is not a technique book but very specifically a guide to training most efficiently for climbing. If you want to climber harder, this book provides lots of good advice.
Thank you for this book!.......2005-11-19
I am an intermediate climber and have been searching for a good source of training techniques to better myself and accomplish more advanced climbs. "Training for Climbing" was suggested by the folks that work at my gym, so I ran out and bought it. This book is so full of information, that I'll be devouring it for weeks! Everything I've read so far is very fact based and straight forward. The parts on developing mental skills are especially interesting to me, as concentration is one of my biggest areas to work on.
My trainer at the gym has requested to look over the book and then we will formulate a work out program to get me in top shape for climbing. I can't wait! Thank you to Eric J. Horst for this comprehensive book on Training for Climbing.
Just what I was looking for..........2004-08-28
I've been climbing for a few years and I wanted to begin a more serious, structured training program to help me break through to the higher grades. Training For Climbing is the book I was looking for, given its scientific look at improving technique, strength and the mind. While such a detailed, measured approach to training may not be for everyone, it has great appeal to me as a longtime athlete who engaged in formal training for other sports. Training For Climbing helped me understand the many unique aspects to, well, training for climbing, which I found to be much different than what I had been used to from my previous sports experience. Furthermore, I enjoyed seeing the many research references and footnotes, and more importantly I was pleased by the overall LACK of "do as so-and-so hot-shot climber does" or "train like I train." Training For Climbing helped me diagnose and design the best training program for me, and I sense that the book will remain a key resource for me for many years to come.
Good book (but heed the warnings).......2003-12-31
First off you must know that this is a book for a hardcore athletic climber. If you are a novice or a weekend climber you may want to start with something lighter.
This book treats climbing from a super-athletic perspective - covering exercise, nutrition and climbing techniques. Some of the info was way too heavy on the anatomy and physiology.
Still, this book focuses on improving your physical and (often not mentioned in any other book) mental technique. It breaks down skills into physical strength, mental and technique areas. Even though much of the training was over my head, this helped me focus on mental hindrances that were inhibiting my performance and had tests which illuminated my weaknesses and then helped me to focus on strength building exercises to work on those weaknesses (like forearm burn and elbow pain after climbing hard).

Book Description
Nature is full of fascinating stories, stories that attract our attention at a young age and keep us amazed throughout our entire lives. The need to understand nature draws us back to its simple beauty again and again, yet underneath this simplicity lies a complex web of associations and patterns. The Nature Handbook does what no other field guide does: explores and explains nature through these connecting patterns, revealing them to the many different types of nature lovers. All naturalists-- from birders to gardeners, hikers to environmentalists, wildflower enthusiasts to butterfliers-- will appreciate the different approach of the Handbook, even those whose interest in the natural world is just beginning to develop. Naturalists who are already well versed in one group of organisms--birders, for example--will find new explanations and patterns for their favorite group, as well as new patterns all around them that they had previously overlooked. Observations in the Handbook are arranged in the three main sections of plants, animals, and habitats. These sections are then connected through discussions of the relationship of size and shape, adaptations, distribution patterns, behavior, and diversity of life. Since the emphasis is on patterns rather than individual species, each chapter has cross-references to related topics. For example, tree-related topics such as leaf shape, treelines, and fall colors, are all discussed in different chapters even though they are related. Leaf shape is associated with trees as organisms, and therefore is in Chapter 2: Trees; treelines are most associated with mountains, so their description is in Chapter 8: Mountains; fall colors apply more broadly to forests than to individual trees, and they are discussed in Chapter 9,Forests. Approximately 500 color photographs help make the more than 200 patterns apparent and recognizable for readers, and each pattern is accompanied by a detailed description and a brief list of sources. The book is designed to invite browsing, and readers will gain a rich ecological perspective and insight. Curiosity about the world around us is a basis for human learning; The Nature Handbook serves to aid all nature lovers in their quest for understanding the many stories that our living world provides.
Customer Reviews:
Nature Studies.......2007-07-18
This handbook fills a space between the field guids and a class with a teacher. It gives you things to look at and see how they could have came about. You may not always agree with what is said, but it will give you a place to start working on your own ideas. A really helpful book to have on the shelf. Covers many different areas of study.
Unique nature guide.......2005-11-14
This handbook is unlike any other nature guide, instead of the usual book which is limited to a single aspect of nature, Ernest Williams has collected 227 descriptions of his observations in the field over the past several decades. The topics are wide ranging, with five general themes: relationship of size and shape, adaptations, distributional patterns, behavior and diverstiy of life. It is organized in three chapters: plants, animals and habitats. The topics are interesting little morsels, 1-2 pages each, illustrated by 500 excellent photos. It makes great bedside or bathroom reading! But I read most of the book on a day of travel. This will be a great addition to any nature observer's library.
One of a kind.......2005-09-30
This book is a comprehensive guide to the world around us. It has everything and anything you might want to discover in the great outdoors.
