Amino Acids in Farm Animal Nutrition
Manufacturer: CABI ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0851988814 |
Book Description
As the building blocks for proteins, dietary amino acids are of great importance in the feeding of farm animals produced for human consumption. Considerable research has been undertaken into the amino acid requirements of the various species of farm animals and there is now increased interest in the commercial production of pure amino acids as feed supplements. Written by leading authorities from the USA, UK, Australia and New Zealand, this book provides a comprehensive review of recent advances and current knowledge of amino acids in farm animal nutrition. The first five chapters consider general issues, such as methodology for amino acid analysis, utilization of precursors, ideal amino acid patterns and amino acid imbalances and toxicities. The remaining eleven chapters focus on particular species including pigs, poultry, ruminants and finfish. There is emphasis on modelling amino acid metabolism in various species and on determining optimum requirements and dietary balances. The book is aimed at advanced students and research workers in animal nutrition, for whom it represents a definitive work.

Egypt: Gift of the Nile: An Aerial Portrait
Max Rodenbeck Manufacturer: Harry N. Abrams ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0810932547 |
Book Description
Twenty-five centuries ago Herodotus proclaimed Egypt "the Gift of the Nile." Imagine if he had enjoyed the perspective available in this outstanding book: the unparalleled view from the air. Here is Egypt as it is rarely seen, in 178 remarkable color images by Guido Alberto Rossi, an Italian photographer well known for his aerial pictures, and lively and informative text by Max Rodenbeck, an American writer who has lived in Egypt for more than 25 years. Together, they bring to light the heritage of a great ancient civilization-and the beauty of a modern land.
Few places are as alive in the collective imagination as Egypt. Here is the valley of the Nile, with its temples and tombs of the pharaohs, the desert monasteries of the early Christians, the mosques and palaces of caliphs, sultans, kings, and presidents. Here too is modern Cairo, with its teeming throngs. Luminous colorplates display an extraordinary variety of desert landscapes, from sensuous dunes to ragged cliffs to gemlike oases, from the mountains of Sinai to the barren shore of the Red Sea. Only when seen from the air, as in the pages of this book, do Egypt's mystery and magic come completely to life.
GUIDO ALBERTO ROSSI covered the Middle East and Indochina for Italian magazines and newspapers until 1973. Since then, his work has focused on sports and travel, and he has been acclaimed for his aerial photographs of Florence, Venice, Rome, Tuscany, Mauritius, and Malaysia. Rossi is a director of The Image Bank, Italy, a photographic cooperative.
MAX RODENBECK moved from the United States to Egypt as a teenager. He has written short stories, feature articles, and guidebooks. Rodenbeck is Middle East correspondent for The Economist, and author of the recent well-reviewed Cairo: The City Victorious.

Not worth the shelf space........2002-07-25
Only about one-third of the book is devoted to pharaonic Egypt.
The photographs are very grainy. Many were taken in the early morning and/or late afternoon and therefore have a pinkish hue.
The text is journalistic.
Flick through a library copy before you even consider buying this book.

The United Nations and Business: A Partnership Recovered
Sandrine Tesner , and George Kell Manufacturer: Palgrave Macmillan ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0312230710 |
Book Description
Customer Reviews:
A must read for anyone in international business.......2000-10-18
As business people we have the tendency to regard the UN as an international organization involved in the "big" issues.
Sandrine makes very clear in her book on how the world is becoming together and how a truly partnership is needed. Yes, business contribution individually can be regarded very small but as is rightly pointed is a very powerful mechanism to make small contributions to a better world.
The book is direct, very well written and ilustrates the powerful instrument that the UN can, and should be.
A must to any international business people.

The Secret Knowledge of Water : Discovering the Essence of the American Desert
Craig Childs Manufacturer: Back Bay Books ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0316610690 |
Amazon.com
The "essence of the American desert," as the subtitle of Craig Childs's book has it, is water. A desert, by definition, lacks it, but when water does come, it comes in torrential, sometimes devastating abundance. Childs, a thirtysomething desert rat with a vast knowledge of the Southwest's remote corners, knows this fact well. "Most rain falling anywhere but the desert comes slow enough that it is swallowed by the soil without comment," he observes. "Desert rains, powerful and sporadic, tend to hit the ground, gather into floods, and are gone before the water can sink five inches into the ground."The travels that Childs recounts in this vivid narrative take him from places sometimes parched, sometimes swimming, from the depths of the Grand Canyon to the dry limestone tanks of the lava-strewn Sonoran Desert. As he travels, Childs gives a close reading of the desert landscape ("the moral," he writes at one point, "is that if you know the land and its maps, you might live"), observing the rocks, plants, animals, and people that call it home. Some of his adventures will remind readers of Edward Abbey's Desert Solitaire--save that Childs writes without Abbey's bluster, and with a measured lyricism that well suits the achingly lovely back canyons and cactus forests of the Southwest. By turns travelogue, ecological treatise, and meditative essay, Childs's book will speak to anyone who has spent time under desert skies, wondering when the next drop of rain might fall. --Gregory McNamee
