The tone may be cutesy but the information is solid. The authors cover everything from compost history to the national garbage problem. And in between there's a little science and plenty of how-to on constructing your pile, what to put in it, the pros and cons of commercial composting products, and using the finished product. The text is sprinkled with trivia and suggestions, from cutting your water bills to heating a greenhouse with compost heat.

This book manages to give lots of great "how-to" information and still keep a sense of humor about itself. After all, that's more than 200 pages on encouraging stuff to rot. Every serious gardner should have a good composting book and I would highly recommend this one.

excellent critical review of progress under CWA........1999-10-27

CWA literature is overwhelming, dense, and confusing. This book is a refreshing change - the progress under the Clean Water Act is presented in a very simple manner. Good for basic technical and legal understanding of the subject. EPA and state-level programs and reports are brilliantly critiqued (no wonder, the book is produced by NRDC!). The text is supported by excellent research of legislative history of the CWA.

Only Chapter 2 (out of 8 chapters) is a little dull. In Chapter 2, the figures could have been more illustrative, and the discussion of numbers could have been livelier. Overall, the most interesting and understandable book on CWA.

Great Gift for anyone who likes fishing.......2007-10-04

I got this as a birthday present for my mother, who is an art teacher. She likes to go fishing, but is obviously a novice. This book was supposed to teach you everything you need to know about fishing, and after talking to her about it, it certainly does! The best thing about this book is that it is easy to read, and enjoyable. Unlike a manual or guide, this book is fun to read. The author connects to the reader through stories and jokes, while at the same time providing vital information that only a fishing guru can provide. My mother read this book very quickly and easily, and is actually reading it again out of enjoyment. She always tells me how much she likes it and what a great book it is. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for good advice on everything concerned with freshwater fishing, or for anyone looking for a gift for someone they know who likes fishing. This book will turn them into experts! The book has wonderful pictures and a very easy-to-read layout. I am very satisfied with the purchase, and I know you will be too. A+. 5 stars!

Loose lines do catch more fish!.......2007-03-29

I loved this book. I bought this book and actually took it camping with me on a trip last year. I went fishing, which I am very new at. In fact it was the first time I had been fishing in years. I was skunked. When I got back to camp I picked up the book and on a cursory glance found the tip about loose lines catch more fish. The next day I had caught my limit within three hours. There were seasoned old guys at the lake that day that kept asking, "What are you using?" They were using the same powerbait that I was. Then they'd say, "You found a hole." Before I knew it I was surrounded by old guys with tight lines. They'd get the occasional bite, but I was getting the fish. After I read then entire book I learned plenty that I didn't know. Since then I have been back to that lake three or four times and I was skunked only once after a flashflood had turned the lake over. Other than that I have caught my limit everytime.
After seeing how easy it is to catch fish, even my wife wants a license this year! I can't wait to go fishing.

Short and Sweet.......2007-01-01

One might think that there would be a spectrum of introductory fishing books running from lengthy books dense with information to shorter books with less information but still reasonably useful. I have not found that to be the case until now. This is a short and sweet introduction to fishing that still somehow manages to be well rounded. The book covers, probably as painlessly as is possible, almost all the topics one needs to know something about in order to experience some fun and success as a fisherman. I think that says a lot for the book.

The tone of the book is what one might describe as jovial, but I was not laughing at any time while reading this book. Many fishing books have a special area where they excel; for this book, it is the topic of fishing vests. I appreciated that because often it is the small logistical matters that don't get discussed in fishing introductions.

Pretty good........2006-09-01

I am a novice angler and I thought this book might help a bit. And I believe that it did. It definitely kept my attention and I did learn a few things, but there's not a lot of specifics. It's pretty basic fishing. I was hoping to learn a bit more about catfish, their habits, and how to catch them. But that info was not to be found. Overall I would recommend this book I'm sure you will learn something and it's definitely worth the price, but when you're done reading it you'll probably want something more in depth.

What's not to like?!.......2003-07-29

Billboard called it "wonderfully entertaining." The Chicago Tribune lauded it as "one of the most addictively fascinating travel books to come our way." But the essence of this awesome book can't be summed up in mere phrases; it has to be experienced through pilgrimages to the good, great, and moribund rock shrines of Britain and Ireland. Indeed, in that quest, Perry and Glinert's revue is essential.

I purchased this book before spending a half-year in London and definitely got my money's worth. The section for England's capital city is divided into the many different neighborhoods that make it up, subtely augmented by clever quotes from Jimi Hendrix to Mother Goose, as well as pictures of the bands and locales discussed. Each listing gives the standard who-what-where sort of information in Fodor's classic, super-clear style; but the excellence of the book lies in the casually-written bios of each club or shop. Glinert & Perry give complete but concise histories of every place of interest along with judgements as to the current "coolness" of each, opinions that helped me narrow-down the spots to check out (after all, with at least 500 places listed in the London section alone, I knew I couldn't make it to each one).

So believe the hype. And if you love music, don't head for Britain or Ireland without this book.

Conditional Engagement as a Substitute.......2000-06-05

In 1996 a collection of essays examining the intricacies of China-United States relations was published by The Council on Foreign Relations bearing the title, Weaving the Net: Conditional engagement of China. This American-oriented set of policies, ¡®conditional engagement¡¯, is comprised of ten points:

THE TEN PRINCIPLES OF CONDITIONAL ENGAGEMENT 1. No unilateral use of offensive military force 2. Peaceful resolution of territorial disputes 3. Respect for national sovereignty 4. Freedom of navigation 5. Moderation in military force buildup 6. Transparency of military forces 7. Nonproliferation of weapons of mass destruction 8. Market access for trade and investment 9. Cooperative solutions for transnational problems 10. Respect for basic human rights (Shinn 1996)

This paper shall scrutinize and critique these ten points while, at the same time, consider both the American and Chinese positions.

Numerous credible sources have made claims to the effect that China is to be the next powerhouse of the world. For the U.S., in particular, the importance of China could very well outweigh any other country (Sharp 1997). As such, a look at the origin and nature of Sino-American relations is necessary. From 1949 to 1971 the relationship between these two countries was essentially antagonistic. However, three points of change may be recognized. Firstly, in 1969, Sino-Soviet relations soured with border skirmishes as well as an invasion attempt by the Soviets. With a strategic focus in mind, China decided to open up to the West. The second point of change was in 1979, when post-Cultural Revolution reforms initiated such projects as special economic zones, private enterprises, and the abolishment of communes, amongst others. Finally, in June 1989, with the Tiananmen Square massacre, Sino-American relations took a downward turn. Further, the collapse of the Soviet Union removed the impetus for a strategic alliance between the U.S. and China. After 1989, there has been general disruption and disregard of the previously set arrangements between the U.S. and China. Based on this set of past and future circumstances, three different stances concerning the nature of Sino-American relations have arisen in Washington. The first, unconditional engagement, claims that a gradual integration into the global trading and financial systems will abate China¡¯s behavior. On the other side of the spectrum, preemptive containment supporters uneasily view China¡¯s potential to spread its control throughout the region and, in the future, the world. The two components of preemptive containment are, thus, to contain and undermine the pseudo-Marxist dictatorship (Shinn 1996). Essentially, these two assemblages of policies have significantly narrowed the options: Should the U.S. deal with China as a threat or as a non-threat?

Conditional engagement, under the organizational efforts of James Shinn and the related task force, was designed as an alternative to those two schools of thought. He defines it as ¡®a moderate, rules-based, essentially empirical strategy for dealing with China¡¯ In essence, the possibilities of conditional engagement are far greater than any method of containment. Yet, with the recent approval of the PNTR by the U.S. House of Representatives, certain points of order must be reconsidered. Nevertheless, James Shinn has truly exerted himself and his task force to come up with a viable option to containment or unrestricted engagement. Further, the Chinese views included in the book only serve to prove how practical conditional engagement is, in light of the lack of options.

This astonishing compilation of a life's work left me amazed and grateful. The photographs--some of them already iconic--will fill you with awe, and the accompanying prose adds color and poignancy to this photographic journey. I cannot recommend this book highly enough!

Extreme Nature by Bill Curtsinger.......2005-11-18

I loved this book of photographs and suggest it ought to go on everybody's Christmas and Hannukah lists. Curtsinger was one of the pioneers of underwater photography (he's shot something like 35 National Geographic articles and six covers), specializing in the strange and marvelous polar regions. The cover alone is worth the price of the book. It's a shot of two penguins, not cuddly tuxedoed stuffy toys, which we've seen a lot of lately, but two rockets jetting down through the water amid a stream of bubbles. Amazing. Curtsinger is a wonderful writer, too, so after looking at the pictures, plan on spending plenty of time on the text.

This book is so much more than a book of pretty underwater photographs. Mr. Curtsinger shares with us his view of the world in places where other-worldly things live. Many of these photographs were the first of their kind; from the first pictures from beneath the Antarctic ice, to the first images of many elusive mammals like the leopard seal and the walrus, all in their secretive, hostile marine habitats. What is astonishing and powerful about these images, many now decades old, is that they are more than just documents from a wild unseen, uncelebrated world; they are artful and aesthetically moving images that capture attention in form and composition; they are timeless in their beauty and truth. Incredible Gift.......2005-11-15

This book is wonderful visually and has a real story to tell. Mr Curtsinger captures many creatures in their natural habitat - things I could never dream of seeing. This diversity makes it an appealing book for multiple ages and family members. My teenagers have even shared it with friends.It will make a lasting impression on anyone - more than just a pretty coffee-table book. Glad I bought it and I will be giving it as a gift this season.
