                  Book Description

How did electrons in the high atmosphere and space around the Earth come to acquire their speeds and energies? This intriguing question lies at the heart of understanding how high-energy electrons create the spectacular displays of the ^IAurora Borealis and ^IAurora Australis. Electron Acceleration in the Aurora and Beyond explores the mysteries of these phenomena and others involving the acceleration of electrons in the magnetosphere, in the solar wind, at the Sun and in the Cosmos. This book presents a new approach to understanding this fascinating subject by treating the acceleration medium as a plasma. Using this new insight we can see that electron acceleration may well be caused by waves rather than steady potential differences. This unique approach is clearly explained in a lively and engaging style. Quantitative formulae, experiments, practical demonstrations and computer programs enable us to investigate for ourselves how the model works. The theory is further illustrated by comparing acceleration in space with particle accelerators in the nuclear physics laboratory (and even on the sports field!) Questions and exercises with answers are supplied to stimulate further thinking. ^IElectron Acceleration in the Aurora and Beyond is a thought-provoking book for graduate and post-doctoral space scientists.

The subtitle of Stop Pretending says it all: "What Happened When My Big Sister Went Crazy." In a sequence of short, intense poems based on the author's own experiences, a 13-year-old girl suffers through her shifting feelings about her sibling's mental illness. She recalls the terror of the Christmas Eve when Sister was suddenly transformed into a stranger; the horror of visiting Sister in the hospital and finding her rocking on all fours; the fear that her friends will find out; her own worry that she, too, may lose her mind; and her wistful memories of Sister as she was before. More complex emotions are also explored, such as her irrational suspicion that Sister may be deliberately acting crazy, as poignantly expressed in the title poem: "Stop pretending./ Right this minute./ Don't you tell me/ you don't know me./ Stop this crazy act/ and show me/ that you haven't changed./ Stop pretending/ you're deranged." Gradually, as Sister begins to recover, the girl is able to find hope and again take pleasure in her own life. Blank verse is perfect for a story with such heightened emotion, and is a format that has been used with great success in other fine novels for teens, notably the Newbery-award winning Out of the Dust, by Karen Hesse, and Robert Cormier's boyhood memoir, Frenchtown Summer. Teen readers may even be so inspired as to try their own hand at this challenging but satisfying form. (Ages 10 and older) --Patty Campbell

                            Book Description

It happens just like that, in the blink of an eye. An older sister has a mental breakdown and has to be hospitalized. A younger sister is left behind to cope with a family torn apart by grief and friends who turn their backs on her. But worst of all is the loss of her big sister, her confidante, her best friend, who has gone someplace no one can reach.

In the tradition of The Bell Jar, I Never Promised You a Rose Garden, and Lisa, Bright and Dark comes this haunting first book told in poems, and based on the true story of the author's life.

i read it in like 45 minutes.

its a book you can't put down.

                            4 out of 5 stars Stop Pretending.......2007-02-24

Stop Pretending is a simple read. It would only take a fast reader probably about only an hour to read. It's one of those books you can't put down. This novel does start out boring in the beginning, but it does get more and more interesting as the story goes on. Basically, it starts out with the a girl who's big sister when crazy one night. Later in the book it talks about how she dealt with it.

I'd say that some kids can relate to this girl, otherwise some people know some friends who have had a loved one gone crazy, or been in jail. This book is quite interesting, which is why i gave it a four stars. I would have given it five, but the novel didn't have the extra star that I wanted. I belive that the in verse novel could have used a little more detail. I would recommend this book more often to young readers. This book keeps you on your feet, which is why I would recommend it to many people.

                            4 out of 5 stars Mental Illness.......2007-02-23

This book is about the author's real life experience of her sister's mental breakdown that happened when the author was twelve and her sister was nineteen. The book is written entirely in poems. These poems don't tell the story from start to finish, but instead they show brief moments in the life of he narrator as she talks about visiting her sister or telling her friends that her sister is in a mental hospital, or when she talks about starting to date a new boy at school. Everything in her life is affected by her sister and the unhappiness and guilt she feels about her sister's condition.

Reading this story in poem form made it more powerful for me. I felt like so much was said in a small amount of space; it was better than a narrative and seemed to me to get across more feeling than a regular book would have. I felt like I really knew these sisters. I liked how many of the poems were flashbacks. I also liked the metamorphosis of the narrator who was eventually able to grow cofident and positive. I felt like the narrator's parents should have been able to help her out more, instead of being wrapped up in their own thoughts.

                            4 out of 5 stars "Stop Pretending".......2006-10-04

This Book "Stop Pretending" was excellent. It was about this young girl who has a older sister that is in the mental hospital. The older sister is in the hospital because she is crazy. She loved hr sister so much she always went to visit her and talked to her about her life, friends, love life..everything. Then when she tells her friends about her they turn her back on her and pick on her because her sister is crazy. This book was also terribly sad because of her sisters illness and how she was so depressed about it.The book was written in free verse poetry but it happened to not ryhme. Everyone who needs a book to read and enjoy I would recomend this.

                              Book Description

A revolutionary new approach to unearthing business opportunities, from the father of the data warehouseLet Bill Inmon, the father of the data warehouse, along with Robert Terdeman and Claudia Imhoff, introduce you to exploration warehousing, an innovative new approach to finding business opportunities hidden in patterns of data. In this groundbreaking book, they clearly explain the exploration process and identify the types of data warehouse designs best suited for exploration. They then outline the steps that must be followed in order to turn data into a competitive advantage.

Using numerous case examples, the authors describe original exploration techniques and demonstrate how IT managers can work together with business managers to identify significant value in the data. These patterns can reveal opportunities in the marketplace for new products and services, when to discontinue products and services, where to streamline operations, and much more. To verify the strength and accuracy of these patterns, they show you how to use exploration with data mining techniques to assure business value.

With this book, you'll gain a better understanding of:
                              - The process of exploring data
                              - The infrastructure of exploration
                              - The roles that analysts play in your organization
                              - How to form a basis of data that can be used for analysis
                              - How patterns in data can be turned into business opportunity
                              - When patterns should not be turned into business opportunity
                              - The role of data mining

Those who are interested in building their knowledge of how to exploit their data warehousing resources, and collaborating with the business stakeholders, Inmon provides some great examples and great suggetions for design.

2 out of 5 stars Better to look elsewhere.......2000-09-26

Obviously, you have to respect Bill Inmon's work in the Data Warehouse industry but I don't consider this book one of his better efforts. It's rather short at 250 pages and there is plenty of filler from the oversize glossary to weak chapters on data mining and the politics of exploration processing. There are also a couple of chapters(Corporate Information Factory description, Chain of Beneficence)devoted to topics that have been published in many places and can be easily found, for free, on the net. The core Exploration Warehouse technology chapters are a bit dated as this technology is rapidly expanding. Overall, a very valuable technology but most of the same information can be found somewhere else on the Web.

                                    Book Description

This text presents a critical survey of the burgeoning field of political ecology, an interdisciplinary area of research which connects politics and economy to problems of environmental control and ecological change. Written to be accessible to students at all levels and from different disciplines, it provides an entertaining and rigorous synthesis of the achievements and shortcomings of the field to date. The book is divided into four sections: the history and emergence of political ecology over the last century; the conceptual and methodological challenges facing political ecologists; the major questions that political ecology has addressed and, to varying degrees, answered; and the major challenges that face the field now and for the future. Throughout, the author uses case examples to explore abstract, theoretical issues in a down-to-earth way. He also draws on real life details from his own experience, in order to offer a personal glimpse into political ecology research.

4 out of 5 stars Read on Robbins.......2007-01-04

Not a bad text for advanced environmental studies students. The layperson outside of the classroom may have some difficulty identifying the underlying structure, and deeper meaning of political ecology, which I find to be a radical de-constructionist perspective.

                                    5 out of 5 stars The "A" standard.......2004-08-26

Robbins has provided the new standard for political ecology texts, at least in geography, although this book is far different from a mundane "textbook." He summarizes both the thrust of what political ecology, what political ecologists do, and the shifting ground beneath our feet as we all struggle to understand and explain human-environment relationships in a political and economically complex world. Some readers and reviewers have fairly pointed out that the volume is too accommodating to perspectives that traditionally clash, or don't mesh very well, to the point of neglecting important differences in how political ecologists conduct research and how they frame it in a particular body of ideas.
I am not sure how some of the authors of past works in cultural, human and political ecology (or anthropology) would view Robbins' interpretation of their work, either in the time-line diagrams of how the sub-discipline has evolved or in the sense of being lumped with other practitioners with whom they shared little in common.
So, while the book is exceptional, the volume can be critiqued for being a bit too inclusive: Robbins has tried to build a tent large enough to house all of the bickering schools, personalities and research approaches...that rarely agree to enter the same tent.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent overview of the work of Andre Gorz.......1998-03-30

This is the only book concerned with charting Gorz's philosophical and political development from the 1950's to the present. Tatman and Lodziak sympathetically examine these developments in relation to the changing social and political context, and challenge common misrepresentations of Gorz's work. They also highlight the relevance of Gorz's contemporary proposals within a context of growing unemployment.
