A Publication of The Management Center

This is the first and only guide to creating personnel policies specifically tailored to the needs of nonprofit organizations in California. Best Practices is designed to help readers produce their own employee handbooks, update existing policies, and identify new and innovative ones. This step-by-step handbook features sample policies in a unique three-level approach. Each policy is presented in three versions to correspond to nonprofits of different sizes. Sample policies illustrate key issues such as Employment and Employee Development, Benefits, Financial Benefits, Unpaid Leaves of Absences, Other Time Off, Workplace Health and Safety, Work Hours and Pay, Work Practices and Work Environment, Information and Communication, Standards of Conduct, and Ending Employment. For each policy, readers can choose the language, form, and style best suited to their organization's needs, mission, and work culture. The book also comes with a 3.5 inch diskette for quick and easy implementation of potential policies and updates.

        Book Description

Once touted as the bright hope for feeding the world's growing population, desert irrigation now threatens to destroy the very prosperity it was meant to create.

Sounding the alarm, Mirage traces the development of desert farming, successfully initiated in British India and the American West, and shows the startling, calamitous results of this shortsighted enterprise. With monumental dams and complex technology we have made the desert bloom, only to see those labors eventually poison the land, ruining it for future cultivation and devastating fragile ecosystems.

Chronicling the history of desert agriculture and irrigation in India and the later application of these techniques in the western United States and elsewhere, Clemings portrays ecosystems assaulted by invasive practices and crop irrigation methods designed without heed to the consequences. From the canal colonies of the Indus River basin to the massive dams of the lower Colorado River, we see the disastrous results of bringing and lands under the agricultural yoke at any cost.

              Book Description

The book is an introduction to practical astrometry, dealing with the determination of positions, motions, distances and dimensions of celestial bodies ranging from quasars to artificial satellites. The main part is devoted to the description of instruments and observing techniques, and also includes the basic properties of optical instruments and a detailed description of the atmospheric effects on observations. A brief summary of the main phenomena in positional astronomy and of data treatment is given. Although classical astrometric methods are described, emphasis is put on new, more precise techniques such as CCD, optical and radio interferometry, space astrometry, etc. For this 2nd edition, the release of the Hipparcos and Tycho catalogs, the rise in CCD astrometry and the adoption of a new celestial reference frame by the IAU led to a significant modification of the text. And, especially, the outlook for astrometry has been completely rewritten.

                            Book Description

The main objective of the book is to provide an up-to-date examination of the possible roles of plant hormones during the cytodifferentiation of xylem and phloem elements in higher plants. Various facets of vascular differentiation, as cell determination, cell cycle activity, and the biochemical events in xylogenesis, are analyzed. Furthermore, the latest information on the roles of auxins, cytokinins, gibberellins, ethylene, and abscisic acid during vascular cell formation are summarized. A theoretical discussion of the six-point hypothesis and the vascular adaptation hypothesis is included. The experimental induction of vascular differentiation under tissue culture conditions is critically appraised and a concluding chapter covers the interactions between physical factors, growth regulators, and differentiation.

                              Description:
The temporal patterns of growth and nutrient accumulation into above-ground biomass of two annual coexisting plant species were studied in a semi-arid unfertile grassland. The hypothesis that temporal differences in growth and in nutrient accumulation into above-ground biomass facilitate species coexistence was also tested. Of the annual species identified, only the growth data of Vulpia myuros (L.) C.C. Gmel. and Trifolium campestre Schreb., for two growing seasons, 1991 (wet) and 1993 (dry) were used. The timing of maximum rates were estimated for above-ground biomass growth and accumulation of N, P, and K in above-ground biomass, as well as for the respective rates from the best fitted curves to data of the seven harvests for 1991 and six for 1993 made. The mean timing of maximum rates for the species, averaged over all growth parameters (absolute growth rates, and rates of nutrient accumulation) and years were significantly earlier for the Vulpia. Mean maximum rates of growth parameters, averaged over all species and years followed this order: significantly earlier K The Control of Growth and Differentiation in Plants

Craig Luebben has taught rock climbing basics to hundreds of clients and has conducted self-rescue clinics across the U.S. Here he presents the most common foot positions, hand grips, and body positions and how to use them precisely, from the smear to the crimp to the twistlock. Going beyond static moves, he emphasizes a dynamic style of movement for the greatest climbing efficiency--a style that makes the most of your strength and your time on the rock.

With an emphasis on safety and how to stay within your abilities, Luebben teaches how to evaluate potential hazards and then avoid them. Topics addressed include: risk management, face climbing, crack climbing, gear, knots, anchors, belaying, toproping, sport climbing, trad climbing, multi-pitch free climbs, rappelling, aid climbing, bouldering, training, and self-rescue.

5 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Rock Climbing Guide.......2007-04-12

From beginner through intermediate, this guide to rock climbing will not only teach you the basics, but provide you with exercises to help you improve your technique.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent How-to Book for Climbers.......2007-02-09

Buy it, read it, use it! Mastering Basic Skills should be purchased at the same time as one's first pair of rock shoes. This book is as comprehensive as Freedom of the Hills but written for the rock climbing niche. It delivers a full spectrum of skills and knowledge every climber should develop. From placing protection to footwork to knots and anchors to self-rescue techniques, it's in there. The way information is parceled makes the entire book easy to comprehend, and to consult topic by topic. It's illustrated throughout with crisp photos. Receiving the benefit of the author's guide experience is a bonus; he's added advanced tips and exercises, as well as his own insights. This makes the material less dry, more practical and personal.

If you've mastered everything in Mastering Basic Skills, you truly are an advanced climber. Chances are good, though, that plenty of climbers who've been at it for while could learn something from this book, too.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful for All Levels of Experience.......2006-11-06

A professional guide and industry innovator for over 20 years, Craig is an incredible resource for expert instruction. The updated techniques presented in this manual have been great for me, a climber for 8 years. There are beautiful climbing photos and close-up explanatory photos. This book won the National Book Award.

5 out of 5 stars Basic climbing Skills in a clear and accessible format.......2005-01-13

Craig Luebben's new book represents a huge leap forward in climbing skills manuals. Though many excellent skills manuals exist (including Luebben's past works and the vaunted but unweildy Freedom of the Hills which goes beyond rock climbing into aplinism and mountaineering) this manual really sepetrates itself with its patient explanations and particularly with its photo instructions with added graphics for clarity. Many books of this genre have struggled with the clarity involved with diagramming knots and sysytems and Craig obviously went to great lengths to rectify this issue. The book is organized well and is easy to follow. It is nice to have these smaller manuals which focus on a specific discipline in the sport. As a climbing guide and instructor I am frequently asked to suggest learning manuals. This one will now be at the top of the list.

                                        Book Description

Designed for easy use, The American Marketplace gives readers a population profile of the United States in one handy volume. Its 255 tables are organized into nine chapters on education, health, housing, income, labor force, living arrangements, population, spending, and wealth. New to the sixth edition is analysis of data on volunteering and the work-at-home population. The expanded housing chapter includes data on appliance ownership and energy-use indicators. The chapter on the labor force shows the latest data on child and after-school care arrangements, while the health chapter provides new data on chronic conditions, obesity, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. New Strategist's own projections of the population by age, sex, and race to 2010 appear in the chapter on population.

                                                  Book Description

Studies on the merits of early euroization of the new EU member states from Central Europe suggest that potential gains from adopting the euro for trade and growth are substantial. This claim is bolstered by generalized gravity equation models estimating the effect of common currencies on trade. This book argues in favor of a sophisticated and statistically more robust form of the gravity equation than the traditional ordinary least square model used in other studies. It is argued that a Poisson likelihood regression model is better suited to estimate the impact of common currencies on bilateral trade. The dataset used includes information for 150 countries, dependencies, and territories. The study estimates and compares potential effects of euroization on bilateral trade with the Eurozone and national incomes of Albania, Serbia, and Macedonia using three different gravity estimates. Following that, it analyzes the potential effects of euroization on intra regional trade and economic integration in Western Balkans.

From the supplier: The factors that have inhibited or facilitated the economic growth of the transition countries in Central and Eastern Europe, the Balkan Peninsula and the former Soviet Union were examined. Although no one pattern was found to characterize the growth experience of these economies, several conditions appeared to impact economic expansion. These include a country's ability to control expansion, the degree of reform or market liberalization, the share of the private sector in GDP, the level of foreign direct investment and the level of success in implementing IMF programs. The experiences of the transition economies offer lessons for other countries seeking to achieve consistent and sustainable growth. These lessons are discussed.

                                                        Book Description

In this wide-ranging exploration of the role of forests in Western thought, Robert Pogue Harrison enriches our understanding not only of the forest's place in the cultural imagination of the West, but also of the ecological dilemmas that now confront us so urgently. Consistently insightful and beautifully written, this work is especially compelling at a time when the forest, as a source of wonder, respect, and meaning, disappears daily from the earth.

"Forests is one of the most remarkable essays on the human place in nature I have ever read, and belongs on the small shelf that includes Raymond Williams' masterpiece, The Country and the City. Elegantly conceived, beautifully written, and powerfully argued, [Forests] is a model of scholarship at its passionate best. No one who cares about cultural history, about the human place in nature, or about the future of our earthly home, should miss it.—William Cronon, Yale Review

"Forests is, among other things, a work of scholarship, and one of immense value . . . one that we have needed. It can be read and reread, added to and commented on for some time to come."—John Haines, The New York Times Book Review

Harrison's book is exquisitely written, filled with both startling and subtle insights about how Westerners since the Greeks and Romans have imagined the nature and role of the wild places that lie always around the far edge of the cleared, cultivated, well-ordered places where civilized humans dwell. Harrison combines philosophy, history, and literature seamlessly. When you are finished reading this book, then read his later equally wonderful book: The Dominion of the Dead.

5 out of 5 stars An important work with appeal to several fields.......2003-12-07

Although this is clearly a work in literary criticism, it is one that will appeal to those working in other areas. For instance, those working on Environmental Ethics will find a great deal of very information about how forests have been conceived in a great deal of the literature of the greater European world throughout history. Intellectual historians with an interest in how Europeans have conceived nature as a whole will find a great deal to interest them in this book that deals with forests in particular. But the primary audience is students of literature.

The narrative of the book runs chronologically to the dawn of written history to Frank Lloyd Wright, though the vast majority of figures discusses are writers, and of those primarily writers of nonfictional literature. Harrison discusses an immense range of writers and works, from the EPIC OF GILGAMESH to Chaucer to Dante to Shakespeare to Descartes to Rousseau to Wordsworth to the Brothers Grimm to Thoreau. Although Harrison's prose style is not exhilarating, I never found the book to be less than interesting.

Whether someone will find this interesting will depend on whether they want to know more about the way that forests have been conceived in European history. At various periods of time they have been view as scared, as dark places of fear, as resources for human exploitation, or as ecosystems valuable in their own right. Harrison does not touch upon all these aspects, but I don't think anyone interested in Western attitudes towards nature could help but find this book to be of the greatest help.

3 out of 5 stars Link between culture and action by society?.......2002-08-01

Harrison explains that he is writing a "a physic history from which empirical history derives its inspiration." It is a history of the place of forests in the western psyche. For example, Harrison writes, "But why should forests haunt the mind like some mystical dream or nightmare that every now and then spreads its long, prehisotrical shadows over the ordinary clarity of things modern? On the basis of what "data of prehistory,"...does the forest become dense with associations and monstrous fears?"

His meta narrative is as follows: "Civilization define[s] itself at the outset over and against the forests." There has always been an antagonism between human culture centers and forests. Forests are a huge part of today's cultural memory.

His method is to scan works of culture, namely literature, for expressions of an attitude towards forests. His "ages" include your basic Greeks, Romans, medieval, Renaissance/humanism, Enlightenment, Romanticism, Modernity.

Criticisms: Frequently looks at a bit of literature and concludes "forests were..." or "forests were becoming..." Harrison doesn't make explicit to whom they were "becoming..." That is, he is not too critical about the authors of his sources or the nature of their audiences. Did the limited reading audiences cut down the trees? If not, what were the concrete mechanisms of deforestation? He writes, here is the attitude, then, here is the scope of deforestation, there's no connection in between.
Harrison also has little respect for chronology; for example, Moses becomes an example of the medieval mindset.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and impressive, but quite a reading to tackle.......1999-11-30

I was assigned portions of "Forests" for a research writing class. The writing is beautiful; the work as a whole is nearly overwhelming. Usually a difficult work does not have such a large payoff. The discussion on Walden in the fifth chapter is not to be missed.

My old Cambridge tutor said that the only works of modern literary criticism he'd sell his shirt for were *Seven Types of Ambiguity* and *The Wheel of Fire*. For a long time I agreed. Then I read *Forests*. It is quite simply the most profound, the most moving, the best-written, the most important work of literary criticism of the late twentieth century.
