Fish Disease: Diagnosis and Treatment
ASIN: 0851997384 |
Book Description
The knowledge of isolation and identification of bacteria from aquatic animals and the aquatic environment is expanding at a rapid rate. New organisms, be they pathogens, environmental, normal flora, or potential probiotics, are being described and reported each month. This has resulted due to increases in aquaculture research, in intensive fish farming systems, and in the international trade of live aquatic animals and products as well as the emergence of new diseases. This manual provides a source that enables the identification of bacteria that may be found in animals (particularly fish) that inhabit the aquatic environment. The emphasis is on bacteria from farmed aquatic animals.

Space Weather: The Physics Behind a Slogan (Lecture Notes in Physics)
ASIN: 3540239073 |
Product Description
The editors present a state of the art overview on the Physics of Space Weather and its effects on technological and biological systems on the ground and in space. It opens with a general introduction on the subject, followed by a historical review on the major developments in the field of solar terrestrial relationships leading to its development into the up to-date field of space weather. Specific emphasis is placed on the technological effects that have impacted society in the past century at times of major solar activity. Chapter 2 summarizes key milestones, starting from the base of solar observations with classic telescopes up to recent space observations and new mission developments with EUV and X-ray telescopes (e.g., STEREO), yielding an unprecedented view of the Sun-Earth System. Chapter 3 provides a scientific summary of the present understanding of the physics of the Sun-Earth system based on the latest results from spacecraft designed to observe the Sun, the interplanetary medium and geospace. Chapter 4 describes how the plasma and magnetic field structure of the Earth?s magnetosphere is impacted by the variation of the solar and interplanetary conditions, providing the necessary science and technology background for missions in low and near earth? orbit. Chapter 5 elaborates the physics of the layer of the Earth?s upper atmosphere that is the cause of disruptions in radio-wave communications and GPS (Global Positioning System) errors, which is of crucial importance for projects like Galileo. In Chapters 6-10, the impacts of technology used up to now in space, on Earth and on life are reviewed. The book concludes with an outlook on the future of space weather research and projects in the timeframe until 2015.

Book Description
Space storms, the manifestation of bad weather in space, have a number of physical effects in the near-Earth environment: acceleration of charged particles in space, intensification of electric currents in space and on the ground, impressive aurora displays, and global magnetic disturbances on the Earth's surface. Space weather has been defined as `conditions on the Sun and in the solar wind, magnetosphere, ionosphere, and atmosphere that can influence the performance and reliability of space- and ground-based technological systems and can endanger human life'. The 19 chapters of this book, written by some of the foremost experts on the topic, present the most recent developments in space storm physics and related technological issues, such as malfunction of satellites, communication and navigation systems, and electric power distribution grids.Readership: researchers, teachers and graduate students in space physics, astronomy, geomagnetism, space technology, electric power and communication technology, and non-specialist physicists and engineers. As recommended in the United Nations Space & Atmospheric Science Education Curriculum booklet. Please find it amongst classics such as T.J.M. Boyd, J.J. Sanderson, J.K. Hargreaves and M.C. Kelly etc.

If you've ever wondered why..........2001-04-28
I've been to South Dakota a number of times and have had many questions about the landscape, etc. This book has the answers and the pictures to go with it. I especially appreciated the glossary and the further-reading list.
excellent book for travel, armchair or otherwise.......1998-08-24
I bought this book for a weeklong driving tour through North and South Dakota, and found this book invaluable. If you are interesting in the natural resources and park systems in these places, it has lotsa info you won't get in maps (especially many beautiful color photos) altho the advice given wasn't always useful.
Book Description
It’s difficult to imagine today–when the Super Bowl has virtually become a national holiday and the National Football League is the country’s dominant sports entity–but pro football was once a ramshackle afterthought on the margins of the American sports landscape. Yet in the span of a single generation in postwar America, the game charted an extraordinary rise in popularity, becoming a smartly managed, keenly marketed sports entertainment colossus whose action is ideally suited to television and whose sensibilities perfectly fit the modern age. Pro football’s ascent is an epic American story, and America’s Game does it full justice.
Beginning with the World War II years, when the NFL was fighting for its very existence, Michael MacCambridge traces the game’s grand transformation, with particular attention paid to six key franchises–the Rams, Browns, Colts, Cowboys, Chiefs, and Raiders–and how their fortunes reflected the larger growth of the game itself. Along the way we meet the sport’s legendary architects, men such as Pete Rozelle, George “Papa Bear” Halas, Bert Bell, Tex Schramm, and Lamar Hunt, as well as a wide range of its memorable characters–including Johnny Unitas, Paul Brown, Vince Lombardi, Jim Brown, Al Davis, Joe Namath, Bill Walsh, and Deion Sanders. In the process we witness the rivalries, the games themselves, and the passion that have made professional football the nation’s signature sport.
MacCambridge continues the story through the turbulent 1980s and 1990s, when labor disputes and off-field scandals shook the game to its core, and up to the sport’s present-day preeminence under Paul Tagliabue. The unique portrait of the modern game’s inner workings and relentless competitiveness sheds light on contemporary stars such as Ray Lewis and Peyton Manning, as well as on the men whose leadership skills are scrutinized and second-guessed by much of the country, celebrated coaches such as Bill Parcells, Dick Vermeil, Tony Dungy, and Brian Billick.
Magisterial and sweeping, definitive and unprecedented in scope, America’s Game is cultural history at its finest. A thoroughly entertaining account of the entire universe of professional football, from locker room to boardroom, from playing field to press box, it is a unique lens through which to view the past sixty years of American history.

A Must For All NFL Fans.......2007-06-27
An all encompassing book about the NFL, from its origins to present day - actually more attention is given to the early days of the league than the present, which is good becoz we all know what's going on in the NFL now - too many books don't provide enough detail about a sport's early days and devote too much print to the now. It has detailed chapters on people like Pete Rozelle and Bert Bell, and their influences, and this book also doesn't trudge through on a year by year basis - it gives an overall view of the NFL.
All football fans should read this book.......2006-09-07
If you follow the NFL, whether you're a die-hard or the casual fan, then Michael MacCambridge's book is a must read. The details of how the league became the force in sports and entertainment it is today is astounding. The anecdotes of the characters who helped shape the league are a joy to read. This one took awhile, as there is so much information to glean from it, from Bert Bell to Pete Tagliabue, Tex Schramm to Lamar Hunt, Dan Reeves to Jerry Jones, you will not be dissapointed.
Football History at it's Finest.......2006-08-01
America's Game is a cleverly weaved story that any football fan or sports historian should enjoy. Written by sports guru Michael MacCambridge, it brings you through several decades of football, from it's unrecognized start to it's modern day spectacle. The book itself is written beautifully- MacCambrige makes the strong, important parts stand out while still making sure the little details are noticed. America's Game: The Epic Story of how Football Captured a Nation is football history at it's finest.
Absouletly Incredible!.......2006-02-14
I could not put this book down! It gives one an amazingly detailed perspective of the history of pro football in America. This book has given me a far greater appreciation for football than I could have ever dreamed of. It is so interesting to read about how the smallest of details changed the course of this sport forever. So many things that the modern fan takes for granted like the salary cap, seeing games on TV or even the logos on the helmets are all explained in this book and their stories of how each and many other details came about are truly captivating. This is THE BOOK for football fans.
Touchdown!!! ............But missed the extra point!.......2005-10-01
I like football, but I was always a little hazy on it's early history. The who, what, when and how of the teams and the game's important people. This book nailed that perfectly!! It's a well written, easy read that lays out the important parts of the NFL's history. A complete touchdown.
Where the book misses the extra point is when the author tries to explain why football is America's most popular game. When doing this it seems as if he is directing the book towards fans of other sports, (especially baseball)as if to say "football is the best, so there!" Basically I think the problem is football is the most popular sport for so many reasons the author is trying to explain something that cannot easily be explained. It's like trying to explain to someone why their favorite color is blue.
But overall this is a great book. If you are looking to find out more about the history of the NFL, this is the book for you.

skull crack book review.......2003-03-26
In the book Skullcrack by Ben Bo it showed that no matter what nothing can come in the way of family not even a hurricane.
My book was about a boy who always knew he was missing something in his life but between being harassed by his drunken father and doing what he loved surfing he really had no time for anything else. One day a mystical man named Mr. Bones followed him home one night and gave him some insight into his future telling him he would meet a very special girl and that when he met adeadly hurricane would hit him and he told him to beware Edwin. One day Jonah's father takes his game a little to far and gets really drunk and really mad and he comes after Jonah and hits him. Jonah not knowing what he was doing or where he was going just takes off with no money or food or anything but he falls off of a cliff causing him to go into a coma. The next day Jonah's father goes to see jonah in the hospital and he talks to Jonah about how he is never going to touch another drop of alcohol again, but then he starts to talk about Jonah's sister who he had never told him about before and it wasn't only his sister it was his twin sister but he had to give her away when they were like one year old because he said he wouldn't be able to raise a girl with their mother being dead and all so he gave her to the adoption agency and he kept Jonah. Jonah's father then decides since Jonah is out of his coma that they can go and see sally (Jonah's twin sister) so they head out to the island that she is on but they here of hurricane on there way there and find out that they are evacuating everyone from the island by bus. Jonah decides not to go with his dad on the bus and he goes to his sisters house. He meets her at her house and at first they didn't believe that he was her brother, but then they figure it out right as the hurricane hits and they all survive it.
I thought this book was really dull and boring at first but after you get about half way through it it starts to unravel Jonah's problems in his life and he tries to solve them. Overall this book was very good, and it showed me no matter what you can always find what or who you are looking for.
In this book it showed courage, but most of all it showed that you just can't keep family apart.
CRAIG p.1
Skullcrack: A Excellent Realistic Fiction Novel.......2000-07-06
Skullcrack is a short novel about a teenage boy living in Ireland named Jonah. His father is an agressive alcoholic. Jonah loves to surf off a small inlet called Craxkull Point. There he starts seeing stange images of a girl in the swirling mists of the cove. I found this book interesting and fun to read because I like setting and the suspense. The ends of most of the chapters leave you hanging on the edge of your seat. This also makes you want to read more. The text contains a group of "demons" commenting on some of the current happenings. Even though his dad is a heavy drinker, he cares deeply about his son and suprises him by buying two tickets to America. What adventures will Jonah find in the US? Read this book, Skullcrack to find out.
Book Description
David Buss updates his classic study of the origin of human mating behavior with fascinating new research.
If we all want love, why is there so much conflict in our most cherished relationships? To answer this question, says noted psychologist David Buss, we must look into our evolutionary past. Based on the most massive study of human mating ever undertaken, encompassing more than ten thousand people of all ages from thirty-seven cultures worldwide, The Evolution of Desire is the first book to present a unified theory of human mating behavior.
Now in a revised and updated edition, Buss's classic presents the latest research in the field, including startling new discoveries about the evolutionary advantages of infidelity, orgasm, and physical attractiveness.
Customer Reviews:
Too basic/introductory.......2007-10-12
This book is too shallow and introductory for the well-versed student of evolutionary psychology, and in many ways outdated (written in the early 90s).
If you're already knowledgeable about the basics of mating strategies and their evolutionary origins, you don't need to add this book to your collection, because there's no new interesting insights or challenging questions tackled here.
Trash.......2007-09-25
Yet another piece of faulty popular science. Although the author conducted a survey of amazingly great scope, he at times seems to even deliberaty ignore or contradict his own results. His only interest seems to be to pseudo-scientifically back up gross stereotypes of men and women. Don't waste your time or money!
How the evolution of mating affects your dating.......2006-12-11
Why do women use makeup? Why do men like to buy big cars? Why do people feel jealous? Evolutionary psychologist David M. Buss digs deep into the ancient past of human relationships to answer such questions, and produces intriguing results, disconcerting insights and valuable explanations. Using observations from the animal world and from many studies conducted in various societies, he provides a theoretical framework based on Darwin's theory of natural selection. Give Buss credit for elaborately fitting in almost every conceivable puzzle inherent in human mating relationships - even though this, admittedly, at times requires quite a stretch of his evolutionary theory. We recommend this "drop-dead shocker" (The Washington Post Book World) to anyone who has ever searched for, attracted, kept or separated from a mate - that is, anyone who is strong enough to face the unromantic truth.
Evolution of desire........2006-06-19
The author does a superb job tracking down the evolution of desire via a plethora of studies, including some conducted by the author and his colleagues. Though it's true that evolution has granted us certain "sexual strategies", psychologically we are more complex mentally than hunters and gathers. The book reads exactly as the title suggest. The author never dabbles into behavioral psychology to explain anything left unexplained by evolutionary psychology. You may catch yourself arguing with the book, trying to explain human motives through behavioral psychology. A major pet peeve for me is I often find the author repeating statements, especially in the later chapters.
Provocative..........2006-04-09
I gave this book a 5 rating because it is provocative and challenges a lot of society's assumptions about sexual behavior. While I realize the book has some shortcomings, it does shed a lot of light on human mating strategy.
I thought the author's notion of long term and short term mating strategies in both sexes was fascinating. It makes logical sense and it seemed to make sense with my experience of people in American culture. I also found the examples and references he used to back up his arguments interesting.
While this isn't a perfect book from a research perspective, it is excellent for what it is... a trade paperback written for a general audience. I recommend it to anyone who wants a deeper understanding of human sexual behavior.
Also... a lot of the information in this book is redundant with the content in the same author's book on jealousy. You may want to get one or the other first and get the other one later depending upon how big a fan you are of his approach to these topics.

Book Description
Employing interpretive strategies from semiotics, narratology, feminist theory, and ideological analysis, Elliott Butler-Evans explores the manner in which the politics of race and gender overdetermine the narrative structures of the fiction of Toni Cade Bambara, Toni Morrison, and Alice Walker. He argues that their writing is "often the site of dissonance, ruptures, and...a kind of narrative violence generated by...these two distinctly different, and often contending, expressions of desire."
For novelists such as those considered, the identification "black women writers" suggests the ideological duality that both limits and expands the meanings within their literature. After locating the nationalist, black aesthetic, and black feminist discourses in the writings of Morrison, Bambara, and Walker, Butler-Evans argues for a problematic tension between the racial and gender ideologies in the authors' fictions of the 1970s. In a concluding chapter, he demonstrates how the writers' use of post-modern narrative strategies enables them to figure a black feminist ideological position in their fictions of the 1980s.

Masterpiece of Motivational Research.......2006-08-30
This is the centerpiece of MR, Dichter's method of discovering the motivations behind consumer behavior. A protege of Stekel, and therefore an indirect descendent of Freud, Dichter was another Austrian emigre who polished American consumerism with continental sophistication in the years following WWII.
The Strategy of Desire explores the anatomy and etiology of motivation as a whole, with interesting sub-studies on specific commercial issues. With the revival of MR under the guise of deep qual and "neuromarketing" and the meteoric careers of Rapaille and Zaltman, it is astonishing that so much of what Dichter explored as early as the late-1930s has come back into vogue.
That said, there is a good deal here that renders large chunks of his argument locked in the 1950s of Ike's baggily pleated golf trousers and soaring silliness of sweeping tailfins. Speaking of tailfins, don't deny yourself the pleasure of reading Dichter's 1939 Plymouth study; it appears as an appendix. There may be portions of the picture that have been brought into closer focus, but it was he who painted the landscape.
My professional interest in this material -- as principal and founder of Applied Iconology, Inc. -- lies in how one uses knowledge of emotional drivers to effect more pwerful brand, package and advertising design. Dichter was one of the very first to suggest the lineaments of a neuroscientifically-inspired design imagery. Depsite the enormous strides in research technologies and methodologies in the last decade alone, Ernest Dichter still has a good deal to teach us about a commonsensical approach to crafting meaningful, emotionally resonant messages for consumers!

Una investigacion detallada y actualizada del tema, basada en estadisticas y encuestas. Recomendable, aunque los primeros capitulos un poco pesados para leer.

Book Description
"This pamphlet's assertion that it is possible for the reader to become fabulously wealthy in 30 minutes is based on its author's enthusiasm upon hearing Confucius's wonderful promise, 'All things come to the person who is modest and kind...' and recognizing it as being very close to similar statements by Jesus Christ and the Buddha. If all these sages concur, surely this recipe is worth testing in our own lives..."

Book Description
This study argues that owing to the wide diversity of nations, their often conflicting policies, and insistence on preserving their sovereignty, the processes of worldwide integration are facilitated by tying these countries together in a system of flexible exchange rates externally, while putting in place a rules-oriented monetary regime internally. The examination of the various issues involved in such an arrangement focuses on money and monetary policy drawing on historical, theoretical, philosophical, and empirical results.
Book Description
Thirty years ago, Alfred Crosby published a small work that illuminated a simple point, that the most important changes brought on by the voyages of Columbus were not social or political, but biological in nature. The book told the story of how 1492 sparked the movement of organisms, both large and small, in both directions across the Atlantic. This "Columbian exchange," between the Old World and the New, changed the history of our planet drastically and forever. The book The Columbian Exchange changed the field of history drastically and forever as well. It has become one of the foundational works in the burgeoning field of environmental history, and it remains one of the canonical texts for the study of world history. This 30th anniversary edition of The Columbian Exchange includes a new preface from the author, reflecting on the book and its creation, and a new foreword by J. R. McNeill that demonstrates how Crosby established a brand new perspective for understanding ecological and social events. As the foreword indicates, The Columbian Exchange remains a vital book, a small work that contains within the inspiration for future examinations into what happens when two peoples, separated by time and space, finally meet.
Customer Reviews:
very important book.......2006-11-09
Slim though it is, this is a powerful little book. This insightful study of the biological consequences of the great culture clash that began in 1492 changed the way I think about history and has proved to be a valuable reference. It is a must-read for anyone interested in anthropology, epidemiology, ecology or history.
The 30th anniversary edition of a classic treatise.......2003-08-09
The Columbian Exchange: Biological And Cultural Consequences Of 1942 by Alfred W. Crosby Jr. (Professor Emeritus of American Studies, History, and Geography, University of Texas - Austin) is the 30th anniversary edition of a classic treatise that shows how the voyages of Columbus caused a sweeping biological change as organisms large and small spread to both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. From the deadly toll of smallpox among the Indians of Mexico, to the introduction of Old World plants and animals to the New World, and so much more, The Columbian Exchange is a seminal, educational, and uniquely insightful contribution to Native American, Medical History, and World History Studies reference collections and reading lists.
