The Influence Styles Inventory (ISI) assesses three communication styles that people use to influence others: Passive, Assertive, and Aggressive. Drawing on current research that integrates the importance of assertiveness with interpersonal communication and influence, this assessment will give managers an opportunity to analyze their influence styles.

The concept of assertiveness, and its superiority over either aggressive or passive styles, has been demonstrated as effective by more than twenty - five years of research. Even so, many people still confuse assertion with aggression or are unclear abou t the difference. The ISI is a tool not only for examining one's preferred style but for developing a practical understanding of how the three styles can be seen to be different, in action. In this way, respondents can begin to learn how to use assertion effectively, as a distinct alternative to aggression or passive avoidance.

A brief, clearly - written interpretation section gives detailed explanations and comparisons of the styles, in terms of the feelings communicated, the specific behaviors used, the verbal expressions associated with each, and the aims of each style. This is followed by explicit discussion of how one might develop better assertion skills.

The instrument takes about 10 minutes to complete and score. Scoring is simple and visual, resulting in a graphic display and comparison of the three style preferences.

Adult-associated chemical cues can stimulate settlement and metamorphosis of invertebrate larvae into habitats with an enhanced likelihood of juvenile and adult survival. For example, sediments from adult fiddler crab habitat stimulate fiddler crab megalopae to metamorphose (molt) sooner than sediments without adult cues. A similar stimulation of molting occurs after exposure to waterborne chemical cues from adult habitats and to exudates and extracts of adult crabs. We tested whether sediments from habitats without adult Uca pugnax (Smith), which do not stimulate molting of their megalopae, could become stimulatory through brief exposure to adult crabs. Sediments were collected from tidal flats at several distances (~1 m, ~50 m, and ~5.4 km) from adult habitats, and incubated for 24 h with or without adult crabs. Molting rates of laboratory-reared megalopae exposed for 48 h to adult-conditioned sediments were compared to those for untreated controls. Sediments collected in or within 1 m of adult habitat elicited the highest molting rates, and natural sediments from 50 m and 5.4 km had little or no effect on molting. However, incubating sediments collected away from adult habitat with adult crabs produced a higher molting response, and the magnitude of the enhancement increased with distance from adult habitat. Results suggest that the chemical cues that adult crabs release are retained by sediments and consequently stimulate molting of megalopae, regardless of the nature of the sediments themselves. Lack of chemical cues may retard colonization of newly created or heavily disturbed habitats that are otherwise suitable settlement and adult habitat.

In the reproductive season, mature females of the fiddler crab Uca perplexa leave their burrows and wander about their habitat for mating. To clarify whether the fiddler crabs respond to colour or luminosity, I examined the behavioural responses of the males to the wandering females before and after the females were painted white, red, black or blue. The behaviours of the males were categorized into three types: lateral-circular wave and lateral-straight wave for courting, and repelling. Before painting, almost all of the males courted the females. After painting, significantly fewer males courted the red-, black- and blue-painted females than courted the white-painted females. These results mean that the fiddler crabs can discriminate colours or luminosity. The role of body colour as a visual signal in crab society is discussed.

We describe an in vivo screening assay that uses epidermal chitinase activity as the endpoint following a 7-day exposure of Uca pugilator to test chemicals. Chitinase, a chitinolytic enzyme, is the end product of endocrine cascades of a multi-hormonal system for control of crustacean molting. Wherever a molt-interfering agent adversely impacts the Y-organ-ecdysteroid receptor axis, the effect should be manifested by the activity of chitinase in the epidermis. Therefore, epidermal chitinase activity is an ideal endpoint for molt-interfering effects of xenobiotics. The validity of epidermal chitinase activity being used for such a purpose is supported by our finding that two injections of 20-hydroxyecdysone at 25 @mg/g live weight induced a twofold increase in chitinase activity in the epidermis of U. pugilator. A total of nine chemicals were screened for molting hormone and anti-molting activities. o,p'-DDT was found to significantly inhibit epidermal chitinase activity while kepone and methoxychlor exhibited a tendency of inhibition of enzymatic activity. None of the remaining six chemicals, namely, p,p'-dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (p,p'-DDT), atrazine, tributyltin (TBT), methoprene, dieldrin and permethrin, had an effect on epidermal chitinase activity.

In the United States there is no question that we live in a culture of consumption. We change cars long before they are work out, and our thrift shops are filled with clothes showing almost no wear. And we are overweight.

The complaints about American consumer habits have grown just about as fast. This book examines that critism from the end of the depression until 1979. The book has five broad themes:

. the persistence of highly charged, moralistic attitudes to consumer culture
. how certain writers embraceed psychology as an explanation for and a solution to social problems
. the factors that determined the power of books to set the terms of public discussion
. the role of intellectuals in shaping social movements, public conversations and policy considerations
. the hegemony of the of the cold war consentsus was replaced by new events and ideas challenged its legitimacy.

Uncle Harvey Sets Us Straight.......2007-10-05

Wily ol' Harvey MacKay is a prototypical midwestern multimillionare. This means that even at his most Machiavellian, he comes across as a charming, down-to-earth folksy everyman - just the sort of person James Stewart used to play. This is Mr. MacKay's first book and it's well-worth reading for anybody who'd like to know more about why some people succeed in business while most fail. Some may dismiss many of Mr. MacKay's advice as merely 'common sense' but given that so many of us fall short of financial and personal success I doubt that the knowledge in here is all that common.

On the positive side, we have a successful business leader who stresses the importance of ethics, personal integrity, and steady hard work. I've rarely encountered a management or business-oriented author who stressed strength of character as much as Mr. MacKay does. He also tells personal anecdotes with a refreshing lack of swagger. This book may have first been written in the 1980s but Harvey MacKay does not reflect the Era of Greed at all. It's little wonder he's in demand as an inspirational public speaker, and that he still publishes a weekly advice/inspiration column.

Of course, in any book this old, there are bound to be dated sections and those are the only real negatives. Mr. MacKay's hiring practices (in which employees are visited and interviewed in their own homes so that he can learn more about their family values, yet in which no one calls to verify personal references) would raise a lot of eyebrows today. There's also an over-reliance on sports analogies. Other reviewers have noted this but I would like to add that Mr. MacKay's love of sports anecdotes reflects his age, because sports heroes and coaches of the past were not the money-driven free agents of today.

In sum, this would be a good graduation gift, or a welcome present for anyone beginning a job within the corporate world. Unlike many advice books, I left this one not only with good advice but also with a sense of who the author really was. And, I have to say, I enjoy Harvey MacKay a lot.

It is impossible for a first time writer to come up with a business bestseller that gives out no-nonsense advice. But then, this is Havrey and he does push the envelop when it comes to enthusiastic salesmanship.

A Must Read For Business .......2007-05-14

This is Harvey Mackays first book, and true masterpiece. This book has so much information on how to navigate your career that it is sure to have an impact on you. Harvey has built two successful careers (the envelope business and as one of the country's highest sought public speakers) by living the advice in his book. This is not theory, it is all examples of things that he has done regularly throughout his life that have lead him to great success.

This book ranks as one of the business world's "Must Reads".

An Exceptional Combination by Harvey Mackay.......1997-06-11

Yes, after reading both books, you will be entertained, informed, & business wise by "Swim with the Sharks." "Swim" is actually a "10". Harvey Mackay tells about negotiating, selling, various approachs to business, power of information, and so much more. Read "Swim" and have a great time. Why 8? "Beware of the Man" is more serious and rates "5". "Beware" is more dry reading and not entertaining. Reading material is hard and not fun like "Swim". Harvey Mackay may have written this "Beware" during his battle with cancer. Overall 8 reflects the average of both scores. Both books are must reading for the entrepeneur.
