Book Description
This book offers a practical, hands-on, pluralistic approach to building organizational and team learning capability that is consistent with OD principles and that carefully explores the links between learning, corporate strategy, and knowledge management. Through a systematic series of applied exercises, it shows readers how learning in, of, and among organizations can be recognized, analyzed, and put into practice through a variety of learning actions and styles that improve organizational performance. It introduces the diagnostic Organizational Learning Inventory and provides guidance on how to use/benefit from it in assessing ANY organizational unit--e.g., department, workgroup, task force, or a company subsidiary. The Competitive Edge: Learning for Strategic Advantage. Assessing Learning in Your Team or Company: Learning Orientations. Assessing the Conditions for Learning: Facilitating Factors. Recognizing Your Best Possible Learning Profile. Ways to Enhance or Shift Learning Orientations. Promoting the Conditions for Learning. Learning across Team and Corporate Boundaries. Chief Learning Officers, Chief Knowledge Officers, Directors of Organizational Development, Effectiveness, Training.
Customer Reviews:
short and practical.......2001-12-08
This book emphasizes the importance of developing learning organizations and then proceeds to outline a 3 step approach to actually doing so in your own organization. The chapters are very specific and lay out the process so just about anyone could analyze where their organization is to start (the first step), where they'd like to go and how to get there.
For knowledge officers, this book is a must read: it's easy to follow and clearly laid out with enough charts and examples to lead you through the process.
Learning Practices: Assessment and Action for Organizational.......2001-02-10
How to build the learning capability of an organization? Some researchers and consultants describe in details how learning organization should work. They advise to shape an organization according to their prescription. Approach presented by Dr. Anthony DiBella in his book is different. The first step in developing learning capability of a team or a company is to assess how it learns. After that we will be able to describe our "best possible" learning profile of the organization and start to make changes. This approach is rooted in OD theory and consulting practice. I would recommend this book becouse it is written for practitioners. DiBella presents very usuful tools to diagnose learning of a team, organization unit or even entire firm or institution. He also describes what to do when we have done our assessment. This book is of high value for people who would like to build or strengten the learning capabilities of an organization or a team.

Book Description
Investigates the circumstances and processes required to establish the new Ogene Revolutiono in which genetically modified crops are tailored to address chronic agricultural problems in specific regions of the world.
Book Description
In this selective "biography" of Mount McKinley, considered a classic of mountaineering literature, renowned climber and mountain historian, Fred Beckey pays tribute to one of the world's great mountains.
Alaska's Mount McKinley, known as Denali by Native Americans, has captivated legions throughout the centuries. Beckey explores the rich history and almost spiritual power of this great mountain-from the natural forces that shaped it to the people who strove to conquer it.
Beginning with the geologic development of McKinley, Beckey moves on to another shaping force-the people who first lived in the shadows of the mountain: Native Americans, Russian fur traders, and the first American prospectors. From there Beckey offers an in-depth chronology of the mountaineering history and summit achievements, including his own. For those desiring a deeper understanding of the mountain, this book features chapters on serious mountaineering accidents, and the challenges and logistics of climbing McKinley.
Customer Reviews:
Very good.......2006-09-06
The book is very good. The history of the mountain makes it simple to write something interesting, but certainly Mr. Beckey has done an excellent and very comprehensive work, and he deserves the credit. The reading is fine too. I only missed some more detailed sketches of the routes, and at times I got a bit lost in the succession of climbing expeditions (though it is true that the book has a chronology at the end).
Also some of the final chapters perhaps do not belong in this book, but all in all I certainly recommend it.
An essential climbing book by a legendary climber.......2000-01-25
Commenting on a Fred Beckey climbing book is a little like critiquing a Mozart opera: who among us, really, has any standing to question him? It's remarkable that the man combines such complete mastery of two crafts, both climbing and writing. Compared to Reinhold Messner, another heroic climber and author, Beckey's writing is much better, more insightful, and ultimately far more useful. The book begins with a forward by Heinrich Harrer, famous for the first climb of the north face of the Eiger, as well as his books "The White Spider" and "Seven Years in Tibet." Much of the book is a history, detailing the early explorations and attempts, including Cook, the sourdough expedition, and the Reverend Stuck's successful climb, on through the pioneering climbs of other routes on the mountain. This is one more book that demonstrates that, in his areas of experience, Fred Beckey is unsurpassed. He is a climber's climber (not least because of his legendary guidebooks) and this is a climber's book on Denali. It's extensively footnoted and makes good use of historical photos, which is a nice professional touch, but the real value of the book is Beckey's total knowledge of climbing and of the mountain. One of the chapters details his participation on the first climb of the NW buttress (the first ascent of the Wickersham Wall) as well as his subsequent first ascent, with Harrer, of nearby Mt. Hunter. It's hard to imagine undertaking a climb of Denali without reading this book first; the last section includes complete route descriptions of the four most-climbed routes on the mountain, an extensive record of accidents and disasters, including analysis of what went wrong, and a chapter on logistics and equipment. Some things have changed; Talkitna is already more built-up than it was in '93 when the book was published (with a soberingly well-used cemetary) and the standard routes are more crowded than ever, but the same accidents happen for the same reasons. If everyone who attempted the mountain read this book, it would be a safer place.

What an awesome tool!.......2007-10-02
Living in the desert southwest, I am constantly running into avid golfers. I am a busy mom of three young children and embarrassingly, I have never had time to learn the game of golf. Feeling Naked on the 1st Tee has totally given me everything I need to know and quick! Now I can get out there and look like a pro. How exciting! Thank you for this awesome tool!!
Very helpful first golf book.......2007-08-29
a handy little book with just the right approach for me, a woman without a lot of sports experience who has decided to take up what is probably one of the most challenging sports - really gave me the 'quick and dirty' on what to look for in equipment, the basic rules, the layout of a hole - and did it all with a sense of humor - highly recommend
New golfer age 65--ITS MY BIBLE.......2007-08-22
Got this as a gift-it was interesting--but as I started with lessons it became "MY BIBLE "-it cuts to the chase and simplifies the facts-what this book tells you certainly does help you to feel more informed on what you Need to know and what other golfers EXPECT you to know---I walk with more confidence about the course even though my striking of the ball is sometimes lacking--but with having this confidence I know my ball strokes will become better and better!!!!-hope to be a good golfer!!!!!
Thanks Ann Kelly--for having loved the game so much that you wanted to share it with others by easing those Jitters that even you must have once had
Thank you Ann Kelly!!.......2007-08-20
This is the perfect book for my wife who is just about to start playing golf. It will help anyone get over the intimidation factor that all golfers have felt. A very pleasant read and most informative.
Very funny.......2006-10-16
Just got this as a gift and it was great. It's a quick read, so just pick it up and enjoy!

Unusual children's story from the 1960's.......2006-08-05
Dorp Dead was well known and considered controversial when it was published in the mid 60's. This beautifully written, slim volume is set in a mysterious, surreal world and like many children's stories features a young orphan as the protagonist. This boy, Gilly, is apprenticed to a very strange, solitary man who wants to trap Gilly in his own carefully ordered world. Gilly ultimately escapes the "caged" world of his master and finds his own way but not without some scenes of suspense and horror. The creepy tone of the book is somewhat relieved by the book's "happy ending." The title of the book becomes clear with it's closing words.

Book Description
A reissue of the novel that dramatically changed children’s literature in the 20th century.
Julia Cunningham’s ground-breaking novel, first published in 1965 and unavailable in any edition for a decade, is reissued for a whole new generation of readers to call their own. “Here . . . is the story of a boy who discovers himself, who basically comes to grips with that most contemporary of problems, the isolation of the individual. It is told within the near-classic framework of the story of the orphan who survives and escapes maltreatment to find love, but it is told in frank, literate terms in the lingo of today’s youngsters. And it has, as an additional dimension, a touch of the Gothic tale, a tinge of terror and a shade of romanticism.” (The New York Herald Tribune)

An appealing story of a boy's struggle against many odds.......2004-04-06
The appearance of this classic story in a new hardcover edition promises to appeal to new audiences. Gilly is a ten-year-old orphan who plays dumb in order to hide secrets. He's adjusted to his new life in an orphanage when he's placed in a home with an eccentric ladder maker who may just be insane. A riveting, appealing story of a boy's struggle against many odds.

Lost Classic.......2006-08-31
Gilly Ground lives a dreary life in an orphanage, until one day,he is sent to live with the mysterious laddermaker Mr. Kobalt. But when Gilly learns his master's plans for him,he knows he must escape from this strange man.
DORP DEAD takes place in a fascinating world, deftly blending realilism with surreality. The book's setting is reffered to as ''the village'',(yes, this was written before the M.Night Shamalan film) and is impossible to describe as either fantasy or fiction.
This is a fastpaced, chilling read that would make a perfect read-a-loud for Halloween. Highly recommended.

Exciting...gets you pumped!!.......2006-01-30
This book takes you to a scary place where you feel like Gilly will never get out. I love the characters, how they act, and the bravery from dear Mash...the beloved dog. I started this wonderful book and finished it in the same day, becasue once you get started you have to finish it!

dorp dead.......2005-09-29
There was no way out! There was a boy named Gilly Ground. He was an 11 year old boy. He was abandoned. He also found out that his grandmother had died. Gilly found himself a prisoner. His ally is a dog beaten-down worse then him. This is a really boring book. I hated it so much. This is a fast-moving adventure story. I didnt like it at all but you might like it considering how it is a adventure book. Just to tell u it is so so so boring.

Small but important book.......2003-06-16
At age 11, this was the very last book I read from the "children's" library. Scary and compelling story. Fantastic illistrations, and not too childish for a someone soon to move on to adult fiction (or I guess now-a-days its called Young Adult Fiction). Dorp Dead is about a boy who is not perfect. For one thing, he can't even spell "drop" and so scribbles "dorp dead" as an insult. A hero who can't spell? That's what facinated me about this book when if first read it in its first printing (about 1966). At the time I read it, I was a very poor reader and speller: Dyslexia hadn't been "invented" yet and I had been simply labeled as "slow". But secretly I loved to read (which I could only do privately by running my finger along the lines of the page... something my teachers forbid). So I related to the lonely boy who was considered stupid and not worth the trouble. I recommend this for what appear to be "slow" children. Perhaps they are not so slow after all and may someday make their livings by writing professionally, as I have been fortunate to do. (So you see, this is not only a review, but also a sincere thank you note to the author.)

Book Description
The decision to enlarge the European Union by ten (eventually thirteen) countries has surprisingly not been accompanied by much discussion of the implications for Social Europe. This has led to criticisms that enlargement is a purely economic process that will sweep aside important social considerations:
Will the much lower labor costs and social standards in the applicant countries - especially those from Central and Eastern Europe - lead to unfair competition or social dumping?
Will this process in turn encourage current EU member-states to reduce their own social provisions in order to be able to compete with the newcomers?
Do the specific features of this new accession wave - the largest enlargement so far and including markedly less-developed countries - threaten the global survival of the so-called European Social Model?
What policies should be implemented in order to avoid a weakening of current European social standards?
These are the main questions this book attempts to answer, on the basis of a comprehensive assessment of the social policy areas most relevant to EU enlargement - wages, working conditions, social protection, employment, industrial relations - while also addressing its most sensitive social dumping aspects: capital relocation, labor migration, and redirection of trade.
EU enlargement is higher than ever on the policy agenda and scholars and researchers of European studies and social policy will find this book an invaluable reference.

Book Description
This work by a well-known futurist and Danish diplomat, examines Europe's future, analyzing the deepest currents governing the evolution of Europe in relation to the interaction of culture and technology. The book describes the role of the European nation-states, regions, and enterprises. It provides a sketch of the European role vis-a-vis the United States and Japan. And it outlines the author's view of Europe's passage from the "industrial" to the "immaterial" age: the competitive parameter of Europe's future will be primarily that of culture, and the cultural attribute will define the profile of all European enterprises. Culture, knowledge, and entertainment will take over as the engines of future economic development. Moller is buoyant with regard to the future of European integration, and in suggesting culture as the driving force behind that integration, he offers a new and refreshing vision for Europe's future.

Description:
Sampling schemes are used by the utilities such as electricity and water to assess the condition of their networks, and hence to predict future expenditure. Frequently the assessment process has to be carried out on a regular basis, e.g. every 5years. However there is little published literature to provide guidance as to how much resampling to undertake, how to use the extra information gained and how accurate the results are likely to be. Therefore this paper describes simple linear and quadratic regression models for predicting future condition and investigates their performance. As this investigation requires all items to have a full condition history, a deterioration model is developed to generate this information.

Description:
Given scenarios describing future climates and socio-techno-economics, this study estimates the consequences for agricultural land use, combining models of crop growth and farm decision making to predict profitability over the whole of Europe, driven solely by soil and climate at each location. Each location is then classified by its profitability as intensive or extensive agriculture or not suitable for agriculture. The main effects of both climate and socio-economics were in the agriculturally marginal areas of Europe. The results showed the effect of different climates is relatively small, whereas there are large variations when economic scenarios are included. Only Finland's agricultural area significantly responds to climate by increasing at the expense of forests in several scenarios. Several locations show more difference due to climate model (PCM versus HadCM3) than emission scenario, because of large differences in predicted precipitation, notably the Ardennes switching to arable in HadCM3. Scenario modelling has identified several such regions where there is a need to be watchful, but few where all of the scenario results agree, suggesting great uncertainty in future projections. Thus, it has not been possible to predict any futures, though all results agree that in Central Europe, changes are likely to be relatively small.

Very good guide but getting long-in-the-tooth.......2007-03-02
The information in this book is now 5-6 years old and, in this age of product volatility, a lot of the mentioned rifles are no longer available. There's more here than you probably want to know when it comes to ballistics--I just skip the technical parts. As a casual airgun shooter, I'm really not too interested in the finer points involving physics. What House did in this book was to investigate a subject that is mostly ignored. He reviewed relatively inexpensive American multi-pump air rifles in the context of how they perform in relation to the more sophisticated, expensive--and decidedly less shooter-friendly--European rifles. His conclusion is somewhat astonishing in finding that the American rifles offer a lot of accuracy and utility for a reasonable price.
After reading this book, I felt obliged to dust off my old Daisy and give it a try at 10 meters. Unfortunately, it's been abused and neglected for well over 10 years and the whole barrel assembly was too loose to even attempt to use it again. I again consulted House and went out and picked up a Benjamin 392 that has proven to be a real joy. Every pellet I've tried gives substantially less than .5" groups at 10 meters even in my fairly unsteady hands and with my aging eyes.
The Crosmans, Daisies, Benjamins and Sheridans will never have the following or accolades of the finely crafted spring-piston European models but this book goes a long way in giving them the respect they deserve.
American Air Rifles.......2006-02-25
This book is an excellent introduction to air rifles, pellets and the ballistics of air rifles. It would serve as a good guide to someone interested in purchasing an air rifle for hunting or plinking. The cover indicates that it covers target shooting, small-game hunting, complete ballistics and pellet selection. The latter three items are covered. However, there is essentially no information on target shooting or rifles designed for target shooting. I realize that the book is limited to American air rifles, but at least the Daisy Avanti models could have been included. There was also a lack of discussion of triggers, a critical rifle component for accurate shooting. I would have rated the book at least 4 stars, if it had not given the impression on the front cover that it included target shooting and target rifles, which was the reason that I bought it.
My husband's love of airguns(all guns)........2005-08-14
I purchased this book for my husband who loves airguns(all guns), hence the title. He would not put that book down until he read the whole thing! Especially about the Benjamin 392, which is his personal favorite(if you could pin him down to choose a favorite). In his own words,"It is the best book written on American made pneumatic "pump-up" Air rifles that he has read to date. It has plenty of statistics on fps and fpe and pellet accuracy just to name a few. Also great info on small game hunting using "magnum" powered airguns". I am very pleased with my husband's pleasure with this book and I would imagine any airgun buff/collector would not be complete with a copy for his/her library.
Sincerely,

Good Read.......2004-01-31
Mr. House's book on air rifles is a good informational book for the masses. It may fall short of Mr. Lumley's expectations but it is fine for the rest of us.
Mr. Lumley stoops to attacking the author and supposing his motives for writing the book. I don't think Mr. Lumley's comments are constructive nor will they scare off a thinking person.
The book has good information on air rifles and their performance.
Excellent Guide to American Air Rifles.......2003-09-24
This is by far the best book for beginners and intermediate users of air rifles that I have seen so far. Lots of practical information on the selection and use of pellets and rifles. The author has a way of explaining some difficult topics in ballistics that makes the material useful to the non expert. I was also suprised to find out how accurate and powerful American air rifles are. The only additions I would have liked to have seen in the book are, 1) A chapter on shooting technique (target and hunting. and 2) A chapter on maintenance and lubrication. I would highly recommend this book.
