Much-Needed Photographs of Rapidly Disappearing Plants.......1999-09-07

A must-have for every library in south Texas. This well-organized book fills a large gap in reference material about vegetation which remains undisturbed on less than 95% of south Texas' landmass. Placement of photos and construction of keys make this an excellent introductory text for students of botany. It's the first volume I can recommend to junior-high and high school teachers as a "user-friendly" approach to keying south Texas herbs. Lots of south Texas plants remain unmentioned here, however. Let us not assume that they are nonnative or without "use to livestock and wildlife."

A fascinating wilderness diary.......2005-11-29

In Chris Czajkowski's first book, Cabin at Singing River, she wrote about building a cabin and living the wilderness life in British Columbia. In this book, she moves away from her first cabin in southern Tweedsmuir Park and sets up camp on the shores of a high-elevation lake, about a day's walk east from her old location.

This book is written in the form of a diary, covering the period from June 1988 to July 1990. She writes about the mounds of paperwork and red tape she must get through since she is living on Crown Land. She also writes about the difficulties of building the two cabins that will be the base for her new "Nuk Tessli Apline Experience" business, finding the best route out to the road, run-ins with bears, violent storms, the complexities of getting supplies flown in, and the beauty and peace of her wilderness life.

My one complaint about this book is the lack of a good map. There is a large-scale map showing SW British Columbia, but I would have appreciated a more detailed map of her immediate area, especially when she talks about her explorations of the many surrounding lakes and mountains. More than once I trekked down to the library to take a look at the topographical map of that area.

As with the first book, this one is a fascinating tale of life in British Columbia's Coast Mountains. Even if such a lifestyle holds no appeal for you, you have to admire Chris for her tenacity and courage. She tells a great story here.

What a woman!.......2000-01-02

This woman has done things I have always dreamed of doing - building my own log cabin out in the wilderness. Her descriptions of her life during that time is wonderful and I just wish I could have been there too - to help her and learn from her. I loved the book.

A book for armchair adventurers- or adventuers on vacation........1999-11-19

This book came out of nowhere to me, and consequently enthralled me. Chris Czajkowski is a thoughtful, detailed writer (and artist) writing about an amazing place. She, also, is amazing to any society-dweller, living alone in the far wilderness (although she is no hermit). Fortunetely she chose to share what happened to her over the course of building her two cabins in the wilderness, as otherwise this book would never have come to be. Although this book is not for everyone, there are lucky people who will enjoy it. For them, it is superb.

An inspiring, warm story by a modern day pioneer!.......1998-08-19

If you have ever dreampt of walking away from the frantic pace of modern day living, you must read the story of Chris Czajkowski (pronounced Tchaikovsky). My wife and I had the priveledge of spending three glorious and unforgetable days with Chris in the cabin featured in this story. Three years might have been enough to begin absorbing the depth of this womans wilderness challenges. You must read this book!!!

Excellent Youth Coach's Hitting Manual. SEE THE BALL........2001-06-12

The Mental Keys to Hitting is the Greatest most user friendly baseball coach's book ever. I thought the mental aspects of Seeing the ball were extremely effective. Most readers reading this review might think that every player is seeing the ball properly. Players do not see the ball as well as they should because they have never been taught the proper mind set of seeing the ball.Coaching hitters to see the ball is one of the most important things a coach can teach his players.This is absolutely not coached at any level of youth baseball. Mr. Dorfman does an excellent job of explaning this simple but often overlooked method of batting. I have bought The Mental Game of Baseball, The Mental Game of Pitching, and The Mental Keys to hitting. These three books are the TOP Three baseball coaching books ever written. I highly recommend this book and the other two books by Mr. Dorfman. This book will teach you the coach how to apply these mental princples to help you to effectively coach your youth league baseball team.

Great Little Carrying Guide.......2004-03-27

This is one of the two best books on Tagalog I have in my collection. Though TAGALOG-ENGLISH DICTIONARY by Carl R. Galvez Rubini is by far the best and most comprehensive Tagalog-English dictionary I have ever seen to date, this little pocket sized phrasebook is great for carrying on you while traveling. Ofcourse due to size don't expect it to be as complete as a full size dictionary, but you will be very satisfied for all the content it has and still fits in your shirt or back pocket. It starts off with Tagalog basic grammar and how to pronounce the vowels in a very easy to understand manner, which is extremely helpful to say the words correctly. It has a nice 2-way dictionary, a lot of common phrases, Filipino food dishes, Holiday dates, crossword puzzles and much more general info which is handy while traveling to the Philippines. There's also an assortment of fast fact boxes through out the pages which I found very interesting. I was very impressed with so much information in such a small book, not to mention the cheap price. I have been traveling to the Philippines for 6 years now and I still carry this neat little book with me. All in all, I think this is a great little phrasebook and worth every penny.

If you are a non-Tagalog traveling to the Philippines, this book is a must. A concise dictionary, lots of useful phrases organized by topic, a pronunciation guide, even an introduction to Filipino grammar! Small size makes it easy to carry.

lonely planet pilipino (tagalong) phrasebook.......2000-05-14

This is a useful pocket sized book that has mostly common (and some not so common) words you might need while travelling. It is divided into themes and even at the end there are some crosswords to "use what you learned". It also uses accent marks to help pronounce the words correctly. It is a "neat" little book!

Still Pertinent after all these years..........1997-11-02

In anticipation of a forthcoming trip to the Galapagos a visit to the local library turned up this 1924 book by Wm Beebe. Somewhat to my astonishment, the book captivated me. Wm Beebe (1877-1962) was not (as I heretofore had thought) merely a one-dimensioned, deep sea explorer. World traveler, naturalist, director of the NY Zoological Society -- he wrote books ranging from birding to jungle exploration. Beebe turns out to have been an early 20th century Loren Eiseley. This book records a 1923 trip undertaken by fourteen scientists from New York to the Galapagos in a steam power yacht, provided by a wealthy patron. They were later to learn that it was more suited to ladies "sipping tea" than oceanic cruising. They discovered to their astonishment that it was "neither an inexhaustible reservoir of fresh water, nor a floating coal mine". They had to cut short their Galapagos collecting and beat an unplanned retreat to Panama for more provisions. Beebe is a very readable author, with many a well turned phrase sprinkled thru the book. He describes the ocean voyage as, "... driving a momentary wedge thru sunshine, wind, and water..." Later, in a small boat, going ashore in the Galapagos, he describes the gentle swell "...which rose and fell as if the Pacific were breathing quietly and regularly." Accordingly, when it came time to jump, he appropriately waited for the ocean to "exhale". He finds both comfort and wonder in contemplating the Darwinian explanation of all he sees. For Beebe, there is an "honour of being one with all about me and in a small way to have at least an understanding..." He marvels, for example, in picking up a crustacean's shell, that having parted ways uncountable millions of years previously, now, quite by accident, they cross again. Beebe deplores both the early sailing depredations of the tortises and the wholesale slaughter of animals by previous scientific expeditions (how many flightless cormorants do you need to get an accurate description?). This expedition restricts themselves to capturing various specimens, which they hauled back to the NYC Zoo. They also took back sacks full of lava rocks, sand, plants, etc with which to make scenic dioramas in the AM Museum of NH. On page 265 one comes across the single most arresting observation in this book. As usual, profundity lies hidden in the details. It seems that Beebe "secured" (his euphimism for collecting) several specimens of different Darwin finches on Daphne, and found to his astonishment that their crops all contained identical food items, despite their differing bill shapes. All, even the heavy beaked birds, for exaple had uncrushed seeds in their crops. He repeated this observations several times, always with the same results. So there is more to the oft repeated, now almost cannonical evolutionary explanation of the differing finch beaks. The various finches are all eating the same things! Natural selection provides what appears to be a reasonable hypothesis to explain the various beaks, but what is really going on? I can think of no less than four explanations, but that is another tale. If anybody reads this and is curious, I am at proode@pol.net.
