Very Basic.......1999-01-05
A basic introduction into Access. Very basic accounting set-up, not in depth. More of classroom / student approach without getting into the "accounting" aspect of the program.
Introduction to Windows/Access.......1998-02-08
This book is an introduction to Microsoft Access. It uses simple accounting examples to show you how to setup a database. The accounting does not go beyond setting up tables and forms. It doesn't have anything on creating financial statments (Income Statement, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow)or even a trial blance.
Book Description
Team Building: A Structured Learning Approach provides a thorough understanding of team building concepts; what it means to be a member of a team, empowerment, and how teams contribute to continuous quality improvement. Your students will apply these concepts in various exercises throughout the book. A structured learning approach is used where team members rotate roles. Students take turns as leaders and observers. The observer records the interactions which occur in solving an exercise, and reports findings to the team at the end of the exercise. These findings are analyzed by the team thus creating an atmosphere whereby teams learn how to learn. There are numerous exercises so the student is exposed to a diversity of problems. Team concepts such as empowerment, cohesiveness, handling difficult members, and team effectiveness are explained and there are exercises that help students learn more about these concepts, while building their team skills.

After the initial shock of even considering a rat-catching professional, the title and content of this book are intriguing. The rat is "the unheralded game-animal of Great Britain," so much so that its proponents are feared and reviled as not quite "right." But from the time D. Brian Plummer received his first rat terrier at the age of 10, he dedicated himself to the sport of rat-catching using either dogs or ferrets. He actually enjoys killing rats and is pleased to share his techniques. Thank goodness for Plummer's wit and charm, which make the experience of reading about such nasty creatures a delight.
Customer Reviews:
Bizarre, amazingly enjoyable read.......2004-09-19
I read of this book in a Forbes magazine some years ago, and was fascinated. I don't hunt at all, but was very diverted and horrified by the details of this sport, as well as an illustration of a side of Great Britain I never expect to see. Remarkably well written and enjoyable, but not for the squeamish.
A Fascinating Insight To A Little Known Sport.......2003-11-21
Being new to the world of rat-hunting,I borrowed an old yellowed copy of this book from a friend.
I just couldn't put it down!
I own two terriers (but i'm still trying to persuade my better half to allow some ferrets into our family)
I learned some very valuable tips from this book that will save me hours of heartache when training my dogs.
Whilst being absolutely rivetting reading it is also a mine of information.
Written in plain English, a true classic.
Ihave'nt read anything on this subject that comes even close.
Tales of a rat-hunting Man.......2002-10-28
I'vebeen involved with terriers for 25+ years and have hunted with terriers for the last ten years. Brian Plummer is one of the true "characters" of the terrier world. A Great read!
Rats!.......2001-08-30
This book is a favorite of mine. It is one of the best books on hunting ever written. Despite its apocalyptic setting, "Tales of a Rat Hunting Man" contains more wildness and freedom than the vast majority of books and magazines on hunting. That description doesn't do it justice. This is a fun book, one that you won't be able to put down. The descriptions of rats and terriers and rat hunts will take you to a world you never knew existed. Rat hunting is a weird pursuit, and Plummer conveys it with humor, adventure and passion.
The introduction by Steve Bodio is worth the price of the book.
Read this book. You won't be disappointed.
A True Hunter.......1999-10-20
Plummer is the most entertaining sporting writer I have read to date. He is thoughtful and well informed about rats, ferrets, and dogs.He also posesses one of the best and blackest senses of humour. A wonderful book.

Spaceflight Life Support and Biospherics (Space Technology Library, V. 5)
ASIN: 0415299985 |
Book Description
Man-Made Closed Ecological Systems explores the interactions between humans, microorganisms, and plants in a closed habitat, and the life support systems necessary to maintain habitability over long periods of time. Problems and approaches involved in creating closed man-made ecological systems (CMESs) from a theoretical and experimental viewpoint are given. Topics include the cultivation of bacteria, microalgae and higher plants; the use of biotechnology to support life outside the Earth's biosphere; methods for recycling air, water and food for human consumption; interactions between humans and other organisms in CMESs; and methods for intensifying the level of photosynthesis. In addition to space the authors investigate problems associated with living conditions in dangerous or difficult environmental areas on Earth such as the Arctic and Antarctica, deserts and mountains.
Book Description
Marathon running is a sport that many consider too daunting, better in the viewing than the doing. Olympian Jeff Galloway dispels such notions in a book that takes the mystery — and misery — out of distance running. Marathon! shows how just about anyone can run a marathon and, given the right attitude and training, finish the race. Galloway has designed a low-mileage marathon training program that has been used by over 10,000 people with a 98 percent success rate. The book includes the latest information on workouts, form innovations, pace charts, prediction tables, and motivation strategies.
Customer Reviews:
Superb, Informative, and Practical.......2007-09-20
I am an author myself and first i must say that this is a well written and thorough book. I am training for my first marathon and absolutely love Jeff's training plan and the Run/Walk strategy. It keeps me fit, motivated, healthy, and looking forward to my marathon. Thanks Jeff. Highly recommended for anyone interested in running.
Yes, you CAN do it!.......2007-06-26
I began running using another of Galloway's books. Then I thought anyone who did a marathon was insane. Now that I've done ultramarathons (farthest was 57.12 miles), well, guilty as charged.
This is a great book for anyone who thinks they can't complete a marathon, or who isn't too sure. He has great advice, and I use the Galloway method during ultras, and it helps immensely. He covers almost everything imaginable, including a temperature gauge to tell you how to dress for whatever condition you're in. There are plentiful training calendars depending on your goal (finish a marathon, best your time, qualify for Boston, etc.).
I started running when I weighed about 240 pounds. In 3 months I went from couch potato to finishing my 1st marathon (which is much sooner than what he suggests, so don't panic). Without this book, I doubt I would've even tried much less succeeded.
He was right - i did it........2007-05-14
I was a non-athletic (translation: couch potato) half marathon trainee with a lot of doubt. Jeff's straight-forward information, hints, suggestions, and warnings were extremely instrumental in my ability to complete my first half marathon at the age of 50. The book is very readable, well organized and to the point. Jeff accomplishes what he sets out to do: give everyone a good plan for training for a marathon. I highly recommend his work.
You CAN do it!.......2006-09-23
I first heard about this book when I began training earlier this spring for the Chicago Marathon (2006). The national AIDS Marathon Training Program, the group I am training with, uses Galloway's program, and I wanted to cover all my bases during training. This book provides a great deal of mental support for the beginning marathoner, and I believe would be most beneficial to those who have never run regularly before. My only complaint is that it could use even more nutritional advice. All in all, though, it's a strong reference book to have around during training.
Good info for all runners of any distance.......2006-06-15
As an older beginning runner who has completed a handful of 5Ks these past few months, the idea of a marathon is one of those "why not" ideas that has been creeping into mind. After reading this book, that goal sounds more realistic than ever before.
In my judgement, Mr. Galloway does a nice job of breaking down the details and convincing any runner that, despite someone's age or athletic abilities, not trying to ever run a marathon will cause more anguish years from now than training to run one. I obviously can not speak for advanced runners but I recommend this book to anyone who has broken out of the run-walk combo program and is ready to add some mileage to their workout.
Customer Reviews:
Run-Walk-Run Really Works!.......2007-10-16
I bought this book while in the middle of following another taining plan for my first half marathon. The other, simpler plan was based on just grinding out the miles though it did include a few longish runs (8-10 miles) split into 2 halves with a short walk in the middle. I kind of liked a short walk in the middle (100m or so), it seemed to rejuvenate my legs. But ultimately the plan I was on eliminated them in favor of pure running.
Galloway recommends many more walk breaks and, at first, this seemed to me like cheating. But I figured I'd give it a try. I started running my 8-12K runs 1000m "on", 100m "off" (walk) and I saw something amazing happen: my split times came down and I could run longer and more enjoyably. My run/walk ratio of 10:1 is actually a lot higher run than he recommends, but it works great for me.
I just used the technique in the San Jose Half Marathon and the results were great. I beat my baseline goal by 10 minutes and even beat my stretch goal by 3. I beat my last 13 mile time trial time by a whopping 20 minutes and, more importantly, I felt great coming across the finish line (I was *crawling* on my last time trial where I ran 3 x 7K with only very short walks). My pace actually sped up throughout the race and my last 2 miles were my fastest.
So, for me, the system works. I am doing another half in January and will follow the entire program this time.
Love this book!.......2007-05-17
It's quick & easy with lots of color & specific tips. It's particularly good if you feel like you're too old or out of shape to run a half-marathon. While there are great tips for training for more competent & experienced half marathoners, as a runner moving into the "masters" category, I really appreciated some of his insight into prioritizing workouts and pacing so I could avoid injury and enjoy myself longer. Took his advice on walk break and set a personal record at my next Half Marathon, despite the aging knees!!
Easy, motivational read.......2007-03-24
Loved this book and still refer to it often. Jeff Galloway's training plan is great and helps you stay motivated till the race and beyond. Also great paired with Jeff's book on running.
Good presentation and detail for any runner.......2006-06-13
I am basing this review on simply reading the book for about 15 minutes while killing some time at one of the big chain bookstores. From what I see, this book is wonderfully written and broken down perfectly, even for "older" novices like me (over 50, run a 9-10 minute mile, have run in about a half-dozen 5Ks' and looking to do more).
The presentation is colorful, motivational, and detailed enough for runners of all levels to get something out of it. I am currently reading the MARATHON YOU CAN DO IT book and that too is written in a breezy fun style yet there is a lot of text. HALF MARATHON seems almost like an outline with easy to view points and notes.
I also own the ABSOLUTE BEGINNER'S GUIDE TO HALF MARATHON but if you only want one guide, Galloway's book appears to be the better and handier guide to own.

Book Description
Ethan is different. He is gorgeous, easy to talk to, and a uniquely gifted pianist. But his musical talent is both a gift and a curse. The doctors label him a schizophrenic, as he claims to have been taught by a long-dead, 19th-century composer. Clare doesn't know what to believe and she's determined to help Ethan find out the truth about himself, even if it means having little time for anything else-including her best friend, Liz. When Liz, feeling completely betrayed, reveals Ethan's secret, she sets in motion a tragic turn of events that ripples throughout the entire community. Beautifully written in provocative prose, her is Anna Myers at her finest. Ethan Between Us is a powerful story, told in the absorbed and guarded voice of a teenage girl, who ultimately discovers the transforming power of truth and friendship.
Customer Reviews:
Could have been better.......2003-03-22
This book started out strong, and I'm not exactly sure what happened to it, but it limped along to the finish line.
I didn't like the main character Clare at all. She was selfish and acted all holier-than-thou. But her worst offense was putting a boy before her so-called bestfriend, which is a no-no as everybody should know.
I won't be reading any more books by Anna Myers.
Love and Friendship.......2002-11-22
Would you choose your best friend over your boyfriend or do the opposite?. Ethan Between Us is a great book for teenagers. I really recommend you to read it. If you see lying on a bookstore, dont have any second thoughts and but it because I know you will not regret it. This book is about 2 best friends(Clare and Liz) being there for each other even at tough times. But Ethan(a gorgious, easy to talk to, and mysterious guy) moved to thier neighborhood and Clare sets eyes on him. If you want to know what happened, read the book! ^_^
"Ethan Between Us' by Anna Myers.......2001-10-17
It's not often that I can say such good things abour one(besides Harry Potter). My teacher recomended this book to me and I borrowed it from her. After reading it twice I decided to buy my own copy because it was so good. I recomend this to anyone who is down abotu their own life because this will make you realize how lucky you are(plus it's a good book).
Great!!.......2001-08-13
The book is not just about romance and friendship. It shows how a simple thing can turn out to be the most unforgetable. For this is not a tale of happiness. It has depth and it has reality. It shows the way one jesture can spark a friendship and one jesture can break it. It is a tale of jealosy, truth and the way we we just want to be. For it shows what it is to love someone and the pain it is to let them go. If you like to cry once and a while and to know what pain really is read this book. it will touch your heart in more ways then one.
Ethan between us.......2000-09-11
Liz and Clare are best friends until an all-good handsome pianist named Ethan moves into their small town. While liz is away at camp Ethan and Clare form a romantic relationship and Clare learns Ethans secret. He was schizophrenic and he claimed to have been taught by a young German boy who has been dead for a very long time. Clares relationship with Ethan breaks up Liz and Clares friendship. Then, Liz finds out Ethans secret and accidently starts the spread of the news that takes off like a rocket throughout the town. This is an excellent book and is sure to break your heart at the end. It's a tear-jerking, page- turning love story, that I can relate to. The fact that this story is so realistic makes it a great quick read.
Book Description
This is the first English-language translation of Jean BaudrillardÆs contemporary classic on the sociology of consumption. Originally published in 1970, the book was one of the first to focus on the processes and meaning of consumption in contemporary culture. At a time when others were fixated with the production process, Baudrillard could be found making the case that consumption is now the axis of culture. He demonstrates how consumption is related to the goal of economic growth and he maps out a social theory of consumption. Many of the themes that would later make Baudrillard famous are sketched out here for the first time. In particular, his concepts of simulation and the simulacrum receive their earliest systematic treatment. Written at a time when Baudrillard was moving away from both Marxism and institutional sociology, the book is more systematic than his later works. He is still pursuing the task of locating consumption in culture and society. So the reader will find here his most organized discussion of mass media culture, the meaning of leisure, and anomie in affluent society. There is also a fascinating chapter on the body that shows yet again Baudrillard's extraordinary prescience in flagging the importance of vital subjects in contemporary culture long before his colleagues. Baudrillard is widely acclaimed as a key thinker in sociology, communication, and cultural studies. This book makes available to English-speaking readers one of his most important works. It will be devoured by the steadily expanding circle of Baudrillard scholars, and it will also be required reading for students of the sociology of culture, communication, and cultural studies.
Customer Reviews:
Symbolic exchange.......2002-07-01
This book is an earlier text of Baudrillard. Baudrillard is considered as a major theorist of postmodernism. But at the time he wrote this book, he was not postmodernist but Marxist. In 1973, Baudrillard divorced with Marxism. But before that year, he maintained the Marxist stance. His main subject was the political economy in Marxist style and the society of consumption in Frankfurt school¡¯s style. He was a pupil of Henry Lefevre who expanded the scope of Marxism into the study of everyday life. Baudrillard took the area his mentor opened up, but approached it somewhat differently: he borrowed frameworks of structuralism. He transformed Marx¡¯s distinction of use value/exchange value into the semiotics of consumption. Society is the field where symbolic exchange, in Marcel Mauss¡¯s term, takes place. What is exchanged in symbolic exchange is not use value but exchange (or symbolic) value. We consume the object not only of its use value but of its symbolic value. Object is exchanged as sign in symbolic exchange. Goods could signify the social status. Object could be desired not only in its use value but in its symbolic value that make difference to its owner from others: consumption could be interpreted as the logic of social distinction. In later texts, he asserted that capitalist society is centered not on production but on consumption. There could be not much objection upto this point. But, he argues, the logic of social distinction is not produced by consumer. It¡¯s the system of signification that is imposed on consumer. In this point, Baudrillard depicts such an unreal picture of iron cage as Frankfurt school did. The system of signification is illustrated as the something of a big brother we can¡¯t exercise any say. But that kind of image is not the one we experience in daily life. Marx said, ¡®Men make history, but not in their own choice.¡¯ Social fact like language transcend individual. We didn¡¯t choose our own mother tongue. We were born into it. But it doesn¡¯t deny the point that we make history. The system Baudrillard delineated is not unearthly fantasy. But where does it come from? It¡¯s the creature we make and change day by day. But in Baudrillard¡¯s world, such a point is lost. On Baudrillard¡¯s picture, the individual is lost. Baudrillard only takes a shot of horror film. In terms of methodology, Baudrillard makes non-sense.

Mind, body, and Spirit.......2001-04-25
Mind, body, and spirit are all the concern of Booth in his book about the darkness of humanity found on the east side of London and the lack of caring shown by the government as well as the churches of the day (mid 1800's).
The sensitivity to the overall needs of man comes out of Booth's love for their soul as well as their body and he does an amazing job of connecting the two. So amazing in fact that there are many establishments of higher learning that still today make it required reading for human service majors.
Booth understood back then that there are certain things about the needs of man that could not be changed by government, society, or time itself. It was this realization that caused him to put aside his desire to feed the souls of the needy until he could feed their stomachs. He was quoted once as saying 'they can't hear the gospel over the noise of their growling stomachs' (not an exact quote).
Booth had been a minister in the New Methodist Connection church in London but left when they would not allow him to minister to the needy who were so close to his heart. Ultimately he began an organization which he called the Christian Mission, we know it today as The Salvation Army, the most successful and trusted charitable organization in the world.
The book is written in the difficult style of old world English authors and may not be the easiest read, but it is well worth it to those who want to better understand both the cause of and the answer to poverty in our world.

It is unnecessary for me to recapitulate the parallel drawn by General Booth between the sombre, impenetrable and never-ending forest, discovered by Stanley in the heart of Africa, and the more fearfully tangled mass of human corruption to be found in England.

Book Description
Some seven years ago a great outcry was made concerning the Housing of the Poor. Much was said, and rightly said--it could not be said too strongly--concerning the disease-breeding, manhood-destroying character of many of the tenements in which the poor herd in our large cities. But there is a depth below that of the dweller in the slums. It is that of the dweller in the street.

Book Description
When Blessed Are The Blood Mares was published in 1978, no other single source existed that contained such a wide range of information on the care of the breeding of mare from mating, through gestation, to foaling and nursing, and on the care of the young horse. Now there is: the second edition of this classic.
Customer Reviews:
For the serious broodmare manager..........2007-06-08
I really enjoyed this book, especially because it went into detail about what to look for in the neo-natal foal and post-partum mare. It gave distinct things to look for which helped enable me to make the decision to call my vet in the middle of the night, and eventually saved my colt's life. Indispensible book to have on the book shelf if you breed and foal your own mares. Another great thing about this book, is that it goes into detail about when to re-breed after foaling, when not to, and what steps you will go thru (explained) on how to get her pregnant. Not quite enough information for me on follicle size measurements, edema measurements, short cycling, etc., but for the most part, this is a must have book.
Pleasant and informative.......2003-09-06
Provides people new to breeding a good overall view of the process. It is easy to read and a good reference. This is not the highly technical manual that would turn away the amatuer. At the same time it lacks depth to be a truly serious resource.
great book.......2003-01-03
A must have for the average horse person. This book is extrememly informative, written in a lively way that keeps you reading from start to finish, and is understandable by the layman. I would recommend it highly.
Excellent resource for novice breeders.......2002-05-29
This book is a great resource for novice breeders. There is great information and knowledge will help you put your mind at ease. I recommend this book for everyone who is hoping for their first foal.
no job for a lady.......2000-12-31
Honestly, I have not read these professional advice books by Dr. Lose. However, If I ever have cause to need advice or mares, foals, or any other health advice on horses, I will be sure to consult her teachings on the subject. I just want to take this opportunity tell anyone interested in her current publications to please read the one book that really gives us the opportunity to have an inside look into what her world is really all about, and to see how she grew into that world. That book is "No Job For A Lady". See where it all started! What a charming and engrossing viewpoint projected by a great veterinarian in the making. Thanks, Phyllis. I read this when I was 10 years old, and 22 years later, I still remeber what I saw.
Book Description
Blessed Are the Foals has been revised and updated to give those who care for the young equine from birth through its first year of life the information they need to make that critical period successful. Once again, Dr. M. Phyllis Lose draws on her decades of experience in equine veterinary practice to explain how to evaluate the foal's health and to recognize when professional help is needed. Profusely illustrated with photographs taken in her practice, Dr. Lose describes in simple, easy-to-understand language for owners, foaling attendants and caregivers what is normal or typical and how to troubleshoot situations that depart from the norm. Beginning with the delivery, emergencies such as failure to breathe, to rise and to nurse are addressed along with such problems as infections and congenital, hereditary and developmental conditions. Other topics include medication and diet—with the emphasis on foal nutrition to meet the changing needs of the newborn—exercise and the special needs of the premature, twin, orphaned and rejected foal. In addition, Dr. Lose discusses current veterinary and husbandry practices and gives candid judgments about their efficacy.
Blessed Are the Foals is, in effect, the companion volume to Dr. Lose's
Blessed Are the Brood Mares—the acknowledged classic on the breeding and care of mares through gestation. Yet again Dr. Lose's expertise, compassion and loving regard for all horses is apparent, along with her desire to offer support to all who would look after them.

The Best.......2002-04-11
Anyone who owns, breeds or cares for horses, this is a must have book. Dr. Lose V.M.D. is a very caring veterinarian who has helped me out tremendously!
A good book with it's own opinions.......2000-02-02
This book focuses almost exclusively on the foal. Dr. Lose has written another book, Blessed are the Brood mares, to cover the mare half of foaling. I enjoyed this book, but found it a bit spare on the actually foaling procedure. It extensively covers diseases and illnesses ... something that occurs, but not to all of us. I would have preferred more time spent on how to keep the foal healthy and happy. I'll call the vets over if my foal gets sick and I'll trust their opinion the best. Dr. Lose covers a long length of time in the foal's life, examining vaccinations during the first year, handling the foal (limited), turning the mare and foal out (some good tips there), and feeds. She is an advocate of early weaning of the foal at 3 months of age. This is a debatable practice, but if you are interested in it, she seems to have her reasoning explained.
