    Book Description

Can your company manage -- even encourage -- turbulence in ways that actually strengthen its competitive stance? Absolutely. In this work, top organizational psychologist Stanley Gryskiewicz argues that challenges to the status quo can be catalysts for creativity, innovation, and renewal and shows leaders how they can keep their company on the competitive edge by embracing a process he calls Positive Turbulence. Developed through the author's work with many of the world's leading companies over the course of thirty years, Positive Turbulence delivers proven methods for creating an organization that continuously renews itself through the committed pursuit of new ideas, products, and processes.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Stay Innovative.......2001-08-17

Positive Turbulence is a very practical guide to keeping your organization moving at a healthy pace and continuing to innovate in order to compete in today's ever-changing marketplace. The theories included can be easily applied and related to any organization with Positive or Negative turbulence. It's a fluid read that's over before you know it.

5 out of 5 stars Practical Guide for Leaders.......2001-02-20

Positive Turbulence is helpful for leaders at all levels of an organization. With theories and examples, the author promotes the need to see the world of work with fresh eyes and to learn from unexpected situations. As a well-known authority on creativity and innovation, Dr. Gryskiewicz provides convincing information about the value of using changing, often turbulent conditions, to shape a flexible organization, open to new ideas. A good source of practical approaches and lots of resources in an easy-to-read format--this is a good book to include in your leadership library.

5 out of 5 stars You'll come away embracing change, not avoiding it.......2000-10-07

Stan Gryskiewicz has a gift for telling a story. This makes his book, Postive Turbulence, a pleasure to read. More important, he has years of experience in helping organizations, teams, and individuals become more innnovative. This makes Positive Turbulence truly useful.

This optimistic, upbeat book stands out because of Gryskiewicz's ability to show how his ideas can be put into action. Pragmatic and practical, he shares his ideas and experience generously. Strategies such as "Focusing on the periphery as a source for innovation and renewal" come to life as a way of spotting technology shifts and marketplace trends.

As a psychologist and consultant, I work with R & D teams and with managers who need to become more effective, forward-looking leaders. This is a book I can and will recommend to my clients and to my colleagues.

5 out of 5 stars Real Innovation? Wow a,d How!.......2000-02-25

As a business man and entrepeneur for more than 40 years, I am forced to confess that this is the most "down to earth" high quality thinking book that came into my hands in many years. It shows from the very begining -and in each page- what real innovation is and should be in any organization operating in any country. It is written out of a life experience which obviously includes knowledge and hard extended atentive work (a good life!). It is not an "instant happening", like instant coffe and other much popular approaches to delicate and far reaching issues, accompanied by an extensive and highly practical "how to" hints and tools for each managerial level and position. Mr. Gryskiewicz, if you intend to keep on writting on the subject, it is not going to be easy to surpass this "Positive Turbulence" you generated. Angel Sanhueza, Executive Director, CPS International.

5 out of 5 stars Innovation Principles That Produce Results.......1999-12-22

POSITIVE TURBULENCE is enjoyable to read, logical in its structure but not stiff, and it really reflects the essence of 30 years of top-level insight into major organizations around the world. The author provides us with the best of this experience, and not all writers do this-they often try to withhold a few gems for the next book, making the current product less than it could have been.

It is our good fortune that the author has avoided this temptation. Rather, this book is a sincere sharing of a breakthrough experience that has lessons of value the reader can immediately put to productive use. I am one of those that tries on a lot of books, and few seem to fit; but POSITIVE TURBULENCE fits perfectly and, like a favorite, it will be enjoyed and appreciated for a lifetime.

          Book Description

Stonehenge today is a battlefield, not only for police and festivalgoers at midsummer but also for rival camps of archaeologists, astronomers, and other researchers into the mysteries of prehistoric religion and science. Controversy flared up in 1963, when Gerald Hawkins made early use of the computer to identify Stonehenge as an observatory for the sun and moon and an instrument for predicting eclipses. Further studies of megalithic sites by Alexander Thom proved that many of them were also related to the seasonal positions of the heavenly bodies. The study of astro-archaeology has now expanded worldwide, bringing new revelations about the mystical sciences of antiquity. This "little history" summarizes the issues involved in astro-archaeology, and illustrates its principal sites and personalities. Included are recent findings of British scientists, whose records of anomalous levels of natural energies at stone circles are in accordance with the magical reputations of such places in local folklore. The present state of research and the exciting prospects for astro-archaeology in the future are summed up in the final chapter. 97 b/w illustrations. Previously published under the title Secrets of the Stones.

Read this book! If you are Christian, Buddhist, Muslim, agnostic, or athiest, these pages hold valuable insights and truths into the need for and possibilities of an eco-sensitive, spiritual life. If you are one of the many disenchanted Christians or former Christians ("but I still consider myself spiritual") out there, prepare yourself to see Christianity in a new and brighter light. I have bought copies for every member of my disbelieving, scientific family.

1 out of 5 stars Different than the anime.......2004-03-01

First of all, they put in americanized expressions such as "you got it chick". And wasn't Tuxedo Kamen supposed to come at the end of the Sailor Mars episode? WAIT A MINUTE! TUXEDO KAMEN DIDN'T COME IN ANY OF THE THREE EPISODES IN THIS BOOK (when he was really supposed to)! Usagi was supposed to use her Luna Pen to get on the cruise ship to become a camera woman! Plus, they changed the endings a lot. They also put in too many americanized names. Scouts? Champion of justice? SERENA????? But worst of all... Negaverse. EWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!

Anyway, since I am a huge Sailor Moon (ehem, JAPANESE NOT DUB!) fan. Cuz, the DIC messed Sailor Moon up BIG TIME! So don't watch the dub or read the americanized books. Instead, watch the sub and read the manga. In other words, WATCH AND READ SAILOR MOON THE WAY IT WAS MEANT TO BE SEEN!!!!

5 out of 5 stars The red planet girl arrives........2003-11-03

The last episode in this book{I saw it} and oh my god, was it terrible. I think the fact that the author makes the scouts more like us is cool. And she also puts in the funny parts, and doesn't make it boring like in the anime. I own both all the manga and all of the novels, and I like both.
In this, the enemy keeps invading by crusies, love charms, and fun parks. I guess Serena isn't happy about that. But fortunately, we meet the bossy Raye Hino who turns out to be Sailor Mars.
              A great book worth reading.

              1 out of 5 stars DON'T WASTE YOUR $!.......2000-09-24

Way too americanized! Did anyone notice those Nine inch nails, X-files, and Buffy posters that according to the book are hanging in Raye's room at the temple? Did you know that Serena shops at Gap and Old Navy? Or that according to this book Darien gives Serena a ticket to get on the cruse ship that Raye and Amy go on, instead of using her Luna Pen like in the Anime? How about that Darien wears Nautica cologne? These are just of the many stupid additions to the book. This book ( ) soooo bad! If you are a true SM fan,. don't waste your $ - buy the manga, watch the anime, they are a whole lot better!

1 out of 5 stars Aviod like the Plague........2000-09-19

this sux. don't buy it. Sailor Moon is great, but this isn't Sailor Moon. If you want a good Sailor Moon book, check out the manga books. They're more money, but they're worth every penny.

              5 out of 5 stars A good book.......2000-07-15

I thought this was a terrific sailor moon book.

              Book Description

In The High Price of Materialism, Tim Kasser offers a scientific explanation of how our contemporary culture of consumerism and materialism affects our everyday happiness and psychological health. Other writers have shown that once we have sufficient food, shelter, and clothing, further material gains do little to improve our well-being. Kasser goes beyond these findings to investigate how people’s materialistic desires relate to their well-being. He shows that people whose values center on the accumulation of wealth or material possessions face a greater risk of unhappiness, including anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and problems with intimacy--regardless of age, income, or culture.

Drawing on a decade’s worth of empirical data, Kasser examines what happens when we organize our lives around materialistic pursuits. He looks at the effects on our internal experience and interpersonal relationships, as well as on our communities and the world at large. He shows that materialistic values actually undermine our well-being, as they perpetuate feelings of insecurity, weaken the ties that bind us, and make us feel less free. Kasser not only defines the problem but proposes ways we can change ourselves, our families, and society to become less materialistic.

2 out of 5 stars First two chapters are good, the rest isn't.......2007-08-19

The High Cost of Materialism is an interesting subject, but the author isn't up to the challenge he sets for himself. The Preface and Introduction are excellent. Both are succinct expressions of the problems that a market-driven economy creates within an individual looking for happiness.
But the method the author uses to accomplish his goal is falls short.

First of all, the author tries to make the claim that "If a person is aware of the effect of materialism in their life, they will probably become happy." This claim is weak at best. There are many people who are happy accumulating stuff. (I don't happen to be one of them, but I don't claim to represent all consumers in the world).

2nd, the author uses questionaires to determine what makes people happy.
He develops an 'Aspiration Index' with questions like:
              1) 'Your image will be one others find appealing'
              2) 'You will be famous'.
There are 15 of these questions.

He gives this questionaire to 350 people. And then he assumes these responses are an accurate portrayal of all consumers.
But, the sampling technique is terrible. I'm surprised the colleagues who reviewed this article didn't point this out.
For the 350 people, he chooses ONLY
              (a) college students
              (b) from one or two universities.

Holy cow! A book on the psychological effects
of materialism, seen through the eyes of college students.
What subset of America is represented by "18-22 years olds in University"?
To me, that makes all the conclusions based on his questionairre responses invalid, or spurious at best.

The book sets up many arguments of why people find materialism frustrating, and then refutes each of these. Sometimes finding some psychological 'causes'. But these arguments are created in his head, and the refutation is just the same.

In the final chapter, the author proposes his 'solutions' for an individual to take so he/she's less impacted by a Materialistic society.
Now, this is interesting, because it assumes a person can choose to not be affected by their own society. A cultural anthropologist would argue against this assumption.

Here are a couple of the 'solutions'.
#3: "Get off the materialistic treadmill".
#4: "Ask yourself why you really want the money, looks or fame."

My reaction to these 'solutions' was to realize, they won't help me.

A major problem with this whole book is, it assumes the individual can remove himself/herself from the way society judges others, without any negative feedback. To me, materialism exists because it's a groupthink type
of phenomenon. I'm often judged by what i wear and drive. Just because i know others are negatively judging me by what i own, and not acting warmly because i don't own what they've been told is 'good', doesn't mean i can control the situation or other people's responses. Yes, i can make my own choices. But my choices are then judged by others. And this judgment by others is what causes conformity. And the conformity is the driving motivator for a materialistic society.

So, i commend the author for taking up the subject. And i felt he wrote an excellent problem statement. But his research to find the causes, and his attempt to postulate a conclusion, left me feeling his whole approach is nothing more than wishful thinking.

              5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-03-25

I am still reading this book, but I am so enjoying it. This book explains the reasons that we as a country and a culture are becoming more and more discontent and unhappy. Our materialistic ideas and concepts, largely due to the media, TV, movies, commercialism are so polluted and distorted by the idealogy that we need more and more "stuff" and things to be happy......this of course never works!! Highly recommend this book....to anyone who will listen!!

4 out of 5 stars Amazing insights, but some flawed arguments.......2006-08-07

I feel this book might better be entitled, the High Price of Possessiveness, since many of the external (extrinsic) motivators that cause personal dissatisfaction are in fact immaterial, such as image and status. The author is a bit loose about what comprises materialism -- image yes, but power no.

Unlike most books on this topic, the author provides real data from replicated psychological experiments, instead of relying on moralizing, criticism, and ungrounded theory (he does however, sometimes insert such unempirical arguments in the mix.) This data presents some amazing insights, and everyone would benefit from becoming aware of what these data show about our sense of subjective well being. The author does a good job of showing how preoccupation with consumer goods and status are highly correlated with personal dissatisfaction. But it doesn't follow that having a preoccupation with external motivations means that consumption or materialism is bad, and that being interested in things condemns one to unhappiness.

The actual data showing these effects is rarely presented in the book, but the one occasion the author shows his own data is enlightening. While the author chooses to focus attention on on what he calls materialism, the critical variable in happiness is actually the extent to which one pursues activities involving unrewarded intrinsic motivation. If one is motivated by both non-material as well as material pursuits, the author's data show one is not less happy than if one forgoes material pursuits. On the other side, if one doesn't pursue active non-rewarded recreation (i.e, only watch TV), you will be less happy if you try to give up material interests than if you have an interest in them (you would be very depressed.)

The author suggests -- without much justification -- that materialism prevents the pursuit of intrinsically motivated activities. This lead him to advocate "voluntary simplicity." Here he abandons science and starts moralizing. He notes rightly that our expectations of what's 'normal' rise as we have more possessions, so our satisfaction remains constant. He notes that we no longer consider a hot shower a luxury, though it was at one time. But he never addresses how a reduction in possessions affects satisfaction. What evidence I have seen suggests that people react differently to status reduction. The author's answer is people can compensate by increasing non-rewarded activities. But even non-rewarded activities such as recycling can be dissatisfying if one introjects feeling of guilt that one isn't doing one's best.

This book can be a great start to a reasonable debate on values and satisfaction, but don't expect tips on how to live contentedly.

              4 out of 5 stars A concise argument for non-materialistic living.......2006-03-15

What is good about this book?
              1) It is very short. The time investment required is minimal relative to the practical impact of the material contained.
              2) It is very precisely argued. Facts are presented intuitively and concisely with footnotes.
              3) It is colorfully written. This is no small feat for a book that relies on quantitative evidence. I could barely put the book down until I finished reading it.
              4) It is short, precise, and colorful enough to provide ample grist for discussion among a group of critical thinkers.

This book continues to have a positive and practical influence on my life. It has helped me to form my own opinion of the degree of materialism inherent in various choices presented to me on a daily basis, so that I could better evaluate these choices and make confident decisions about the prioritization of my time.

3 out of 5 stars Reads more like a term paper.......2006-01-23

Before reading this book, I read "The Paradox of Choice : Why More Is Less" by Barry Schwartz. I thought this book would take things to another level over that book. I ended up very disappointed.

This book discusses studies that Kasser has been involved in. While some of the studies were interesting, I felt like I was reading a scientific journal rather than the unique way that Schwartz presented his material. This book would have better been titled "Why Materialism will not make you happy".

The Schwartz book is a very interesting and thought provoking read. This book is more like a dry term paper, 3 stars was stretching it for me.

                            Book Description

The collapse of the Soviet Union and the Soviet bloc had a profound effect on Turkey economically and politically. On the one hand, the collapse further marginalized Turkey's position in Western Europe, as some of the newly liberated Central and Eastern European countries raced ahead of Turkey to join the European Union. On the other hand, the collapse presented Turkey with new opportunities and challenges stemming from geographic proximity and cultural/historical ties with countries that emerged from the Soviet bloc and from the former Soviet Union. In articles focusing on the 1990s and beyond, this book explores how the economic and political fortunes of Turkey have changed since the end of the Cold War. Two main sections of the book examine Turkey's relations with the European Union and with the former Soviet Union and Soviet bloc countries. Each section opens with a chapter providing an overview of Turkey's political relationship with the respective region, followed by chapters that examine facets of the politico-economic relationships. Located in a potentially volatile portion of the world, Turkey plays an important role in maintaining peace and prosperity in its region. The analysis in this volume allows an understanding of the critical factors that influence the political economy of Turkey, and therefore, its ability to contribute to world peace and stability.

When David Breashears agreed to climb Mount Everest with an IMAX camera in order to film from the summit, he had no idea that his little expedition would become embroiled in a tragedy that would make headlines around the world. On May 10, 1996, two expeditions led by experienced Everest guides Rob Hall and Scott Fisher summited the mountain, only to suffer the loss of eight members--including the two leaders--on the way back down. At the time, Breashears and his filmmaking crew were at the base camp preparing for their own climb--originally planned for that same day but postponed after realizing there would already be several other groups on the summit. Instead of making a film, Breashears and company participated in the rescue and only later reached the summit of Everest to successfully complete their film.

Broughton Coburn, a long-time resident of Nepal and a friend of David Breashears, was commissioned to write a book about the filmmaking expedition, the tragedy on Everest, and the mountain itself. He has more than succeeded with Everest: Mountain Without Mercy, a taut recounting of disaster and triumph at 29,000 feet. But this book is about more than just mountain climbing; Coburn has also included fascinating information about Nepal, Buddhism, and the Sherpa culture, as well as the history of climbing Everest. He covers everything from the causes of altitude sickness to Nepal's increasing problems with deforestation, and through it all he weaves the story of that day in May when Everest again proved unpredictable--and deadly. For a white-knuckle climb to the top of the world's highest mountain, complete with stunning photographs, you can't do better than Everest: Mountain Without Mercy.

                            Book Description

Less than half a century ago, Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay became the first humans to stand atop Mount Everest and gaze outward from the highest point on our planet. Since their historic ascent, scores of other climbing expeditions have attempted these forbidding heights and many have succeeded. But though she can be climbed, "the Mother Goddess of the World" cannot be conquered.

Few know this as well as David Breashears. The first American to scale Everest twice, he was a veteran of nine previous Himalayan filmmaking expeditions when he agreed to lead what became his most challenging filmmaking experience. The expedition was organized by large-format motion picture producer MacGillivray Freeman Films and was comprised of an international team of climbers. Their goal was to carry a specially modified 48-pound IMAX® motion picture camera to the summit of Everest and return from the top of the world with the first footage ever shot there in this spectacular format. Even in the best of conditions, Breashears knew, Everest is a daunting challenge -- but in May 1996, the mountain proved how deadly it can really be.

A stunningly illustrated portrait of life and death in a hostile, high-altitude environment where no human can survive for long, Everest invites you to join Breashears, his climbers, and his crew as they make photographic history. Author Broughton Coburn traces each step of the team's progress toward a rendezvous with history -- and suddenly you're on the scene of a disaster that riveted the world's attention. Everest incorporates a first-person, on-the-scene account of the most tragic event in the mountain's history: The May 10, 1996, blizzard that claimed eight lives, including two of the world's top climbing expedition leaders. It is a chronicle of the courage and cooperation that resulted in the rescue of several men and women who were trapped on the lethal, windswept slopes. Everest is also a tale of triumph. In a struggle to overcome both the physical and emotional effects of the disaster on Everest, Breashears and his team rise to the challenge of achieving their goal -- humbled by the mountain's overwhelming power, yet exhilarated by their own accomplishment.

Arresting photographs taken by members of this courageous team capture the glory and grandeur of the highest mountains in the world -- and the grim toll they often demand. Its pages present the expertise of prominent scientists, the hard-won experience of world-class adventures, and the first-person accounts of expedition climbers including Jamling Norgay, son of Tenzing Norgay, who fulfilled a dream of following in his father's footsteps, and Dr. Beck Weathers, who after miraculously surviving a night on Everest without shelter, is rescued by helicopter in one of the highest rescue efforts in history.

Illustrated with detailed maps and more than one hundred and thirty dramatic photographs, Everest encapsulates the culture, the history, and the adventure that surround this monolithic icon.

5 out of 5 stars Mt Everest: spectacular photography.......2007-07-13

I bought this book for the photography alone: this is as close as I am ever likely to get to the Himalayas.

The photographs are spectacular, and I can see why so many people are challenged to want to make the journey to Base Camp if not further. Appearances can be deceptive: beautiful colour photographs portray a seemingly benevolent picture of Everest which is quite at odds with reality.

Recommended for those with an interest in the Himalayas as well as to those who admire beautiful photography.

This book is for anyone who has an interest in Mt. Everest. The photographs are magnificent. They show just how small mankind is. Our hopes, dreams and accomplishments are put in perspective. I loved it!

5 out of 5 stars This Story Just Does Not Go Away..........2006-09-18

I forget you how many years ago its been since this event took place. But last month I saw the story told yet again in a national "adventure" magazine.

Pros: 1. The pictures are terrific, so the book makes a great coffee table piece. 2. The book is very informative while being a pretty easy read. 3. The side bars are really good. They are very informative and yet concise and to the point.

                            5 out of 5 stars A Big Book For A Big Mountain.......2006-07-17

National Geographic has put together another epic of a book, receiving a rare five stars from this reviewer team. Supported by outstanding color photographs and an array of writings by numerous writers, this is a valued item to keep.

Everest is also a good resource for relevant maps, history, and an interesting discussion of the Sherpa people. Without the Sherpa support, Everest would still be a mountain of mystery.

Typical of the majority of Everest material, this book focuses on the South Face, virtually ignoring the popular North Face routes and climbers.

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful Photography; Okay Writing.......2006-07-12

Having recently read "High Exposure" by David Breashears, I had a feeling of deja vu all over again when I cracked open this tome. Seemed to me that pages were lifted from "Exposure" and copy-pasted into "Mountain".
The photography, however, is beautiful, and provides great visual insight not only to the mountain and the people who attempt to climb it, but also into the lives of the people who live in its shadow, literally or figuratively.
Unfortunately, the text could be denser.
My advice: Buy it used and enjoy the photography.
