Business Research Through Argument

Book Description

This book suggests that business research, in the collection, analysis, and communication of evidence, will benefit from explicit acceptance of research as argumentation. Argumentation is the process of compiling an argument through selection and organization of the relevant evidence.
Recently, business research methods books have placed too much emphasis on the scientific method as brute empiricism, using only large sample statistical testing and demanding prediction through retesting old theories. Especially with regard to the study of human activity, there is now much evidence that there is not one special scientific method.
This book argues that all types of empirical data, including statistics and personal experiences, be accepted as data, but that it is essential that these observations be explained. This book will provide researchers and postgraduate business students with a strategy for conducting research that encourages thought, provides a way of critically perceiving previous research, as well as suggesting a logical structure for communicating their research.

This book fills much needed gaps in the strict HSEEP hierarchy. Too often the HSEEP models are like trying to kill a fly with a shotgun. The suggested alternatives provide for effective and efficient training and evaluation events. Short-staffed offices with minimal budgets will find these to be the ticket.

Excellent Overview and Guidebook.......2003-09-11

If you are a planner or trainer that deals with teams of people who must respond to emergent, rare, extraordinary and/or complex events, this book is an outstanding value. Covering the spectrum of tabletop discussions or exercises, "paper" drills, and full field drills, this book offers lots of insight into design and effective use, and tons of ideas on how to develop low-cost approaches that you can use to get people together to discuss, plan, train for, or "pre-experience" almost any type of event or incident you can conceive. I have recommended this book to others, and lent my copy to someone who hasn't yet returned it! My background is in emergency medical services and I am currently active in designing training approaches to some unique "homeland security" scenarios in other fields, and this book has and will continue to be a valuable aid.

Trying to Hard.......2001-08-16

Where Kaplan's "Coral Reefs" manages to take a difficult field guide topic and conquer it, "Southeastern and Caribbean Seashores" Takes an impossible task and muddles it. I don't know what the people at Peterson's Field Guides was thinking! The topic is far to broad to include in one book, and Kaplan seems to try and make it broader. He includes coral reefs and things distinctly NOT on the shore as well as including topics already in other field guides. I do NOT want to belittle Kaplan (whom I enjoy) or Peterson's (who I think makes the best mass consumption field guides available) but unless you really need it, I would stay away from this book. It does win points for itýs illustrations and Kaplanýs knowledge and writing style.

Don't Leave Home Without It!.......2001-08-07

I have taken Kaplan's field guide to seashores to Florida Keys, the Bahamas, the USVI, The BVI, Bonaire, Puerto Rico, Jamaica and Curacao, and have found the book to be indispensible. No matter which island, each seashore seemed familiar, and with a little judicious reading beforehand,I understood whatever natural phenomena I saw, from snorkelling in the shallows to walking the rocky shore to crawling around the red mangrove roots. I would no sooner leave this field guide home when I go to the Carribbean or Florida, than leave home my Michelin Guide to Europe when I go there. I recommend the Field Guide to Seashores to all nature lovers and snorkelers who want to make the best of their trip to the the Caribbean or Florida.

An Amazing Grief Book.......2005-06-13

I know this book is probably written for and marketed to children, but as a grieving adult, it is awesome. The words he uses, the illustrations by Deborah Healy - all beautifully blend together. It appears (I haven't researched this fully) that Walter Wangerin, Jr. is a Christian writer, but this book could easily be used in all religious traditions.

I especially love the part where the townspeople go to the parson and demand answers from him. He simply says, "I don't know." Their response is, "how can we fight a mystery?"

I love the book for adults, but I think there are several good messages in it for children, one, that things are not always as they appear...

In November 1997 Hungarians voted in favor of membership in NATO, primarily as a step toward membership in the European Union and integration into Western society. Andor examines the changes in Hungarian social, political, and economic life after the collapse of communism in Central Europe. He analyzes the difficulties, both internal and external, to making that transition. In the early 1990s, public discourse was dominated by the enthusiastic slogans proclaiming Hungary's "return to Europe." "Things can only get better" was the prevailing feeling surrounding the dismantling of the state socialist system and the construction of the new parliamentary democracy. From the very early years of transition, however, Hungarians faced large-scale and unexpected hardships in their changing lives which made them the most disappointed nation in Eastern Europe by 1993. In the second half of the 1990s, the policies of the Socialist-Liberal coalition, and particularly the positive developments in the enlargement process of NATO and the EU, restored the belief in a rapid and successful accession to the major Western economic and security organizations. But, as Andor indicates, the beginnings of negotiations about entry into NATO and EU will be merely the starting point of difficulties arising in both economics and politics. A thoughtful and cautious look at a changing Hungary that will be of interest to scholars, researchers, and policymakers involved with Central Europe and contemporary European politics and economics.

The problem-solving capacity, and hence the democratic legitimacy, of national governments is being weakened by the dual processes of legal and economic integration in Europe; and the loss is not fully compensated by the development of effective and legitimate problem-solving capabilities at the European level. Professor Scharpf supports his position by examining the normative underpinnings of democratic legitimacy and by a detailed analysis of the structural asymmetry between the effectiveness of the legal instruments of `negative integration' which prevents governments from interfering with the free movements of goods, services, capital, and persons and the political constraints impeding positive political action at the European level. This is particularly true for policies pertaining to the welfare state. Governing in Europe explores strategies at the national level that could succeed in maintaining welfare state goals even under conditions of international economic competition, and it also discusses the conditions under which European policy could play a protective and enabling role with regard to these national solutions. The author suggests that if these opportunities should be used, multi-level governance in Europe could indeed regain both effectiveness and legitimacy.

Truly Useful Field Guide.......2006-07-08

I have used this guide since I moved to Oregon from California. It is easy to use and has helped identify many plants and animals unfamiliar to me. I never go anywhere without it! This small book will fit in your backpack, tote, car glovebox, saddle bag, or a large jacket pocket. The pictures and text are accurate and give you a good "snapshot" of a new plant or animal. I have often loaned it or given a copy to friends who are new to the area and they too have enjoyed it. This guide should be a staple in your Pacific Northwest wildlife library.

Thorough, Compact, and Easy to Use.......2002-12-13

I highly recommend this field guide to anyone who is interested in the species found in the Pacific Northwest. It is especially great for beginners because it is easy to use and contains sections that cover diverse forms of life. If you're an expert and like to precicely identify mushrooms, for example, get a mushroom guidebook. Otherwise this is great for a quick reference to an amazing number of a variety of species in this area. I've had a lot of fun with it!

A nice gift for a newcomer (or yourself!).......2001-02-09

In attempts to find the 'perfect' gift for an active, outdoorsy newcomer to the Pacific Northwest, I stumbled across this guide. Considering the National Audubon Society's reputation for quality material, along with the recommendations and details provided by preceding Amazon reviewers, I took the plunge and bought copies for both of us!

(Since I currently reside in the desert southwest; I definitely needed assistance!)

After retrieving his package from the front porch and opening it at the end of a long day at work, my friend wrote, "The Audubon Field Guide is WAY cool. I spent about 15 minutes thumbing through it last night before I even took off my coat."

Soon thereafter, I opened this addition to my own library. At 15-16 oz, this is a serious weight to consider carrying on a long backpacking trip -- but not so frivolous if you relish identifying everything you're seeing! Its compact size makes it a perfect picnic basket/day pack addition for day trips, and when you're not out exploring, it's a handy kitchen/coffee table reference when you gaze out the window. This is a great all-around first guide for a casual/budding naturalist!

I can't wait to use it on my next trip!

Good All Around Guide.......2001-01-16

I used this guide while on a hiking vacation through the Olympic Peninsula (Washington). Kept it in my backpack and found myself grabbing for it so much I eventually had it tucked in my back pocket. It is nice and compact. The pages have a glossy sheen so the occasional misting from coastal waters or common shower will not ruin it. It has everything in it (animals, trees, mushrooms, lichens, flowers, shrubs, insects...) and nice info on nature preserves, landscape and the weather. It was a great way to not just appreciate the beuaty of the hike, but learn about what I was seeing (a nice diversion on a 10 mile hike). Don't expect a lot of subject depth. Remember, it can fit into your pocket (sticking out the top).

Good easy reference book.......2000-09-14

As a newcomer to the state of Washington, this book has been very helpful in identifying the flora and fauna of the area. Combining the plants and animals in one easy reference source is helpful. The photographs are very nice.
