Another Dickinson winner.......2003-02-16

Published and updated for the year 2000,this book is nevertheless another "stellar" contribution by author Terrence Dickinson.Spiral-bound,it is easily transported and accessed while out "seeing." Well-presented, and down-to-earth(pardon the reverse pun) for those of us who are newbies to this most wonderful adventure of amateur astronomy.Dark skies!

Perfect for the beginner with no background.......2001-07-03

After perusing a number of books, I found this one to be the best. It is the easiest introduction into astronomy and star gazing that is offered. Many of the confusing explanations of other books are ommitted. Moreover, the essentials of finding the constellations are easily explained and easily followed. Lastly, the book had a great further reading and information section that was very helpful. I recommend this book to anyone with a budding astronomy interest.

Dispense with technical mind boggling!.......1998-12-26

This is the first book I've read explaining the universe that keeps it simple enough for a beginner to understand. I checked the book out at the public library and can not wait to get my own copy and a highlighter. Fantastic!

Excellent book, but you should buy the Third Edition........1998-10-21

While echoing the positive comments of all other reviewers, the reader should be cautioned that the new Third Edition (1998) has been released.

The planetary tables in the back of the "New Edition" (1989) only go through the year 2000; those in the "Third Edition" are good through 2010.

Make sure that you are ordering the Third Edition!

This is an excellent book! If you are a beginner and just starting out like I am, this is the book for you. The topics are excellent. They are written in easy to read and understand words and terms. This book covers all the topics including what to look for in your first telescope. The charts are wonderful and easy to read. The pictures are awesome. In addition, Terence provides a list of stars and constellations along with their pronunciation and meaning. Terence shows and explains how to use major constellations to find other constellations and stars. I found that I couldn't put the book down. This book will hook you on backyard astronomy.

Scholarly & readable account. 1st rate.......1999-07-27

Ms. Moss' knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject is apparent throughout this work. As a total lay person, I found it an enjoyable read.

Her scholarship is unique in that she has relied solely on Southern manuscript sources, thereby, confining her work to only those cures and remedies having a documented history in the colonial and ante-bellum south.

She has accompanied the remedies with a history of the medical theories prevalent at the time along with anecdotes and appendices that both amuse and inform.

A most needed addition to the history of folk medicine.

Poorly researchered amateur effort.......2007-08-10

This author of this book admittedly rented or bought a number of videos on Okinawa karate, supposedly watched the videos and then wrote a book based on his limited experience in Shotokan ryu, a Japanese off-shoot of the original Okinawan arts. The author make some fairly outrageous claims that he attempts to pass off as historically correct without one shred of primary research or evidence. It is outrageous that a publishing house would even bother putting this diatribe in print.

Readers interested in Shotokan should immerse themselves in Harry Cook's book, The History of Shotokan. For more information on what Shotokan is missing as a martial art, I highly suggest the Gennosuke Higaki book: Hidden Karate, the true bunkai for the Heian Katas and Naihanchi.

The Best Book on the Origins & History Shotokan Karate & More!

A radical book yes, but it's not controversial OR contradictory at all IMHO. Easy to read & packed full of information about the true origins & history of Shotokan & budo, not just the normal couple of paragraphs that you get in most books on the subject.
I agree wholeheartedly with all the other "POSITIVE" reviews written here below, as for the negative one about "serious injury", the only serious injury to anyone following the many applications (bunkai) described in here would be to the opponent - and you don't have to change the moves in the kata to fit the bunkai (Oyo Bunkai). See Injury-free Karate by Paul Perry.

If you're a serious student of Shotokan Karate (or any of its derivatives or styles) then you ought to read this one FIRST, it'll save you a lot of money. It really is a breath of fresh air compared to the myriad of humdrum copycat books on karate.

If you're looking for a broader & deeper history of karate (& Martial Arts) in general then also look at "Okinawan Karate" by Mark Bishop.

Shotokan Secrets.......2007-04-02

Probably the best book I've read as far as the true history of not only of the Shotokan style but karate itself. Very detail in the history and the applications of the Shotokan style. I highly recomend this book to karate practioners.

A good insight with some interesting ideas on how this great art came about. It goes hand in hand with what I have been teaching for years, when others come up with siliar concepts it validates what you have been doing all your life.

A Complete Farce!.......2007-03-19

Having trained on Okinawa several times throughout the last thirty years I am confident that this book was written without a single visit to the island. Grossly inaccurate, racist, and recklessly missing easily researched information, I can't believe anyone with any experience on the island would find value in this book. The failure to even mention the martial art of the royal family (Udun ti- palace hand) is mind blowing since the royal art is strictly a soft art and this book is trying to justify the development of hard styles. All the author would have to do is walk into a Undun ti dojo and he would have been given all the documentation he needed. Of course, he wouldn't have been able to write this book after that since his theories would have been blown out the window.
This is a fairy tale, new "legends" that some will cling to and pass off as history.

Goats girls consists of two previously written weetzie bat books that are also published seperately and in dangerous angels. It consists of Witch baby and Cherokee bat and the goat guys. When I bought the book I was expecting two new weetzie bat stories, but if you haven't read them they are fantastic. Witch baby is about a little girl who has purple eyes and black hair, she feels like she doesnt belong and the story is about her and her life as she watches everyone. Cherokee bat and the Goat guys is also really good. Francesca has a really unique way of writing and her storys will capture your heart and your attention. But if you want to read these, I suggest just buying dangerous Angels, its got all 5 stories

So what does consumer retail on used car mean anyway?.......1998-07-14

I found this book to be next to worthless. As near as I can tell, this book tells me what price a used car dealer is going to *OPEN* with - not what the selling price (hopefully) will be.

The cars are listed at "Consumer Retail", which is not what a) the dealer paid or b) What they'll sell for. Though I'm sure they'd be happy to sell to you at the price listed.

I admit I *THOUGHT* I was buying the Kelley Blue Book my credit union makes available (my fault - should have read description better - and it turns out the *real* Kelley bluebook is only available via subscription).

IMHO all this book does is add to the obfuscation that the used car dealer can throw at you. I think Kelley has done the consumer a disservice by publishing this.

If you're looking for a used car to buy or sell, hit your local credit union and look the car up in the *REAL* Kelley Blue Book.

This is a must have book for anyone planning on purchasing a used vehicle. Bring it with you to the car dealerships and make sure that the salesman is charging you at least equal to or less than what is in the book. a $10 book saved me almost $2800 when I went to the dealership a couple weeks ago! Sure, each used car is unique, but you needn't go blindly into the test drive. Jack Gillis has reliable statistics on hundreds of used cars, from the Acura Integra to the Volvo 900 series. For the years 1988 through 1997 (for most models), you'll find information on theft ratings, crash tests, airbags, complaints, the cost of parts, fuel economy, weight, and price. There's also an assessment of each car's performance, strengths, and flaws. These statistics are quite helpful in themselves, but Gillis goes even further to provide chapters on understanding the classifieds, properly checking a used car, and getting a good deal. Buying a used car doesn't have to be a stab in the dark.

The book is the culmination of two years of research led by Geza Feketekuty. Among the book's 21 authors are current members of Congress, former government officials, representatives of American business, and prominent academic and policy institute thinkers. A Life-Changing Book.......2007-01-16

This book has changed my life personally and professionally. It enables the reader to understand why so many things in our culture don't make sense and why many of our perceptions from early childhood were right on. Through a series of lessons and activities in nature, the reader can actually experience how natural systems work and what it feels like to align with the natural order of things. The reader can reconnect with innate sensory awareness that enables us to see life more clearly, make more satisfying decisions and drop addictions and behaviors that are not serving us well. I have incorporated the principles of this book into my career counseling practice with the most dramatic results. Clients gain clarity more quickly about what they want to do in life and are more committed to the career paths they chose. Although it is easily accessible for a popular audience, I also use this book as the basis for a Continuing Education Course for psychotherapists, nurses and other helping professionals. Every professional who has taken the course has found the book to be most useful to them in helping patients find more harmonious ways of relating to others and to the world.

Michael Cohen's book RWN is full of historical fantasy........2006-09-12

When I first got this book, Reconnecting With Nature, RWN, I was quite intrigued. As a Sierra Club member I love the outdoors and support conservation efforts. However reading further one finds little ring of truth in RWN. Cohen is writing fantasy and trying to pass it as fact and history.

I totally agree with M. Cohen that exposure to nature is good and healthy and everyone should be out in nature as often as possible.

My problems with Cohen's book are the following:

1. He feels that modern technology is THE cause of human suffering. This is false. The Buddha wrote about the nature of human suffering at 500BC. Certain there was no modern technology back then.

2. He presents a romantic fantasy that people of long ago lived with nature and connected to God and lived happily with no suffering. This is false. He gives American Indians as an example. Reading about the American Indians reveals that their history is filled with wars and killing. Hardly the picture Cohen paints. Ken Wilber refers to people like Cohen as eco fascists. Personally I feel the term fascist is a bit strong but I would call Cohen an eco fundamentalist or fanatic.

3. He equates Earth's nature with God. This is false. Earth's nature is a manifestation of God, but is not God. God is much more that physical nature. Ken Wilber explains this beautifully in his book Sex, Ecology, Spirituality.

It is wrong that Cohen instills a hatred of technology. Certainly technology has created problems for people like pollution and stress. Whenever humans solve problems other problems are always created. Then those problems then need to be addressed, this is the natural flow of human events. Before modern technology people suffered greatly. Just a century ago women often died in child birth. Children often died before adulthood. People usually had ten kids so maybe a two or three would live long enough to have kids of their own. Is this what we want to return to? Not me.

RWN may be a good book for meditation practices but for high level wisdom there are must better books out there, e.g. Sex, Ecology, Spirituality by Ken Wilber. Pathways to Joy by Swami Vivekananda. Any book by the Dalai Lama or any Buddhist monk.

Simply the best.......2006-03-09

This book gives you little tasks after each chapter to really get you in touch with the nature that surrounds you. It opens up a new universe that we are all too busy to see in our own back yard or even a potted plant. Take time to connect with yourself and let nature take its course.

"doing" something about it!!!.......2004-03-18

"Reconnecting With Nature" is a work of genius. It is the only ecological psychology treatise that I have found that proposes activities "to do" beyond ideas to think. Every chapter suggests specific exercises that intelligently inform the reader of how to take action so that the theory can be proven, or not, by the individual. Finally, a knowledgeable, knowing voice that goes beyond philosophizing by introducing the reader to a "yoga" that communicates non-verbally with nature. The bottom line is that "Reconnecting With Nature" empowers the individual to become the specialist/expert via experience, thereby, breaking the typical, habitual cycle of seeking ultimate authority in the academic and scientific communities. Great gratitude to Mike Cohen!!!

Produces the most important results since Earth Day 1970.......1998-10-31

Earth and its people are at risk. Most of our personal and global problems don't readily improve because we are emotionally bonded to the destructive way of thinking that produces them. Our dilemmas are psychological addictions. They must be treated as such if they are to change.

The Natural Systems Thinking Process in Reconnecting With Nature provides a psychological key to personal and environmental wellness. It helps us make conscious sensory contacts with nature that replace our destructive subconscious bonds with responsible ways of relating.

Doing the book's activities produced the following repeatable, teachable, discoveries with respect to living in balance and peace with people and the environment. If you use the book correctly, you can produce similar results. Think about what Earth and our personal relationships would be if many people learned to do these activities.

Sustainability: "As I continued the forest activity, I found myself attracted to the various songs of the birds and then gradually to the various stones and nuts and shells in the path. I would stop in the path, pick up the stone, admire its beauty and then feel clearly called to return it to its appropriate place. So often other times I have felt I needed to put it in my pocket and carry it home. Now, through the activity, I had a real sense of appreciating each rock, each shell, each leaf in its place for the time I was there. I felt suddenly freed from the need to possess something. I had a growing sense of letting things be and to just be still and glory in the fullness of the moment. As I allowed myself to connect, appreciate, thank and move on with so much of what surrounded me, I felt a letting go into being present. In this transformation, I began to feel I was part of the scene more, not my other self that needed to possess. I learned that I do not need to possess something to have the joy of it."

Peace: "I was never taught to ask permission to relate to people or the environment, I just did it, we all do. However, this activity required my senses to learn how to ask an attractive tree covered area for its consent for me to walk through it. The area continued to feel attractive, but something changed. It was the first time in my life that I totally felt safe. It felt like Earth's energies were in charge of my life, not me. It gave me a wonderful feeling of having more power to be myself. I felt in balance with nature and the people here because I could feel their energies consenting to support me. I never experienced nature that way before. It was like a strict law protected not only my life, but all of life. I felt very secure and nurtured as I walked under those trees. I learned that when I seek permission from the environment I gain energy and I belong. "
