Hatsumi does it again. As the quintessential master of smoke and mirrors, Hatsumi once again attempts to sell nothing as something. What else can be expected from the self-procaimed master of kyojitsu tenkan-ho?

An Excellent Book... For the Serious Student.......2007-01-28

This is not a book for beginners. It is, however, a book that the serious student of stickfighting traditions should read. This does not teach techniques...but gives a glimpse of the real skills and strategies used in using the bo, jo, and hanbo. Filled with Japanese tradition, this book attempts to reach toward a deeper meaning of any form of budo. Sure, if you want to learn "The Art of Kata", then you are looking for a different book. If you are looking to reach a higher understanding of combat with sticks, GET THIS BOOK!

Disappointing.......2006-03-03

This book is nowhere close to the original "Stick Fighting." It seems that it is attempting to pry into on the reputation of the former book. When comparing the two books, this should not be entitled "Stick Fighting 2" but something completely different. Buy it only if you plan to sell it later or are adding it to a Hatsumi collection.

fun to read, difficult to understand........2005-11-30

i think this book is a metaphor of what Sensei Hatsumi wishes to teach in genenral. his books are chaotic, hard to understand and have to be read twice (or more) to be understood.

this book features magnificient pictures, a lot of explanations about the historical context and some technique descriptions.

I would tend to recommend this book to advanced martial artists, as the title suggests, but i have to admit that the pictures can be a good introduction to beginners to spark their imaginations.

Read between the lines on this one, re-read it a few times, and weigh it against your own martial arts background. always seek a qualified instructor to practice these techniques properly and safely.

I know that many dislike this book for its highly stylized content. Some say, "Lots of fluff not much stuff." If one was to be utilitarian about it, then this book is really a waste of cash. But then again, it depends upon what you are expecting. It certainly is not a text on stick or pole fighting for a novice. I guess in some ways it may not even be a text on stick fighting! The applications and photos require insight into the inner meaning of things, with little being obvious. I must say that had I not seen Hatsumi actually move, and also practiced martial arts for some time, I would have been clueless. This book for me was less instructional than it was in giving a certain feeling. Again, another one of Hatsumi's teaching methods that can be confusing. He certainly is not teaching to the lower levels. If you are looking for a Hatsumi book that is more user-friendly, check out his classic "Stick Fighting" coauthored with Quasten.

A very accurate description of what to expect.......1999-10-18

I found this book to be 97% accurate of what my experiences were for the week I spent in Damascus and immediate areas. I highly recommend anyone planning a trip to Syria to use this book as a guide to understanding Syrian customs. Coleman South's attention to the details of everyday life helped immensely. The Syrian people were indeed friendly and became even more so when they found out I was an American. I would only add that since Culture Shock: Syria! was written, information access is widespread, as judged by the forest of satellite dishes seen on rooftops and CNN in my hotel rooms.

Wonderful!.......2005-07-02

This is one of my favorite books of all time. It's the third in the serries and in my opinion, the best. It's about Julia Purcell, who always feels as though she has to live up to her older sister. Then, she meets Geoffrey Mackenzie who always feels as though he has to live up to his older brother. They fall in love during World War One and when Geoffrey goes off to fight and Julia to nurse, they make all possible atempts to meet. The language used by the author is wonderful, the historical background is wonderful and it has a wonderful story. I would recomend reading this serries in order.

Another view on the events.........2003-02-20

I remember when these books were first on display at Borders, thinking I wanted to read this one, intrigued by the romance and how pretty the cover was... "Julia's Story" is another interesting installment in the lives of the Purcells. It covers some of the same events from "Sarah's Story" & "Frances' Story" but also lasts a little longer. It ties up what you were left wondering at the end of "Frances' Story". My favorite aspect of all the novels is how each gives a sisters persepective on the walk they took over the Quantocks. My favorite part in the later story would probably be the few days Julia and Geoffrey manage to steal away, to spend time together in Paris. Their romance is a lot more complex than you were led to believe. It just makes the inevitable all the more sad...if you've read the other books, you know what I'm talking about. "Julia's Story" is definitly not a let down. Parts can be quite sad...but so can life. But it ends on a hopeful note. Definitely read these books - all together they are a great story.

World War I as seen from the front.......2002-05-23

I think this book is the best of the three Quantock Hill stories I've read so far. The scenes in hospitals in France during the war are so real, you feel you are there. As with the other stories, you see some of the same events, but from a different point of view. ... it's a sad story in many ways, and very moving. Definitely read the other books in the series too!

Julia's Story is the probably the best book I've ever read!!.......2002-04-06

...I got excited, sad, then actually cried. I've never cried while reading a book before. I tried to persuade Julia to say something although I knew it wouldn't matter. This is an extremely sad and compelling book. The sisters have such a strong bond with each other. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND reading this book!!!

GREAT!.......2002-02-21

I have read the first three of the Sisters of the Quantock Hills books now, and this one is definitely the best so far. If you liked the other books, you'll LOVE this one (as I do). However, this one is more sad than the others (but you'll but prepared for most of what happens by reading the first two). The other books don't say too much about Julia, but this book shows what an amazing character she is. This book is a wider range of time than the others (Sarah's Story and Frances' Story are 1910-1920, Julia's Story is 1910-1930. Julia's age ranges from about 15-35) but its still REALLY good. you also learn more about what happened with Frances and Gabriel. I haven't read Gwen's Story yet, but I hope to very soon!

This landmark study of economic history since World War II systematically explores why postwar trade and payments have evolved as they have, the prospects for their future evolution, and the range of policy adjustments likely to be required. Through a rigorous examination and analysis of historical records, the author makes two significant and unique contributions to the scholarship on the subject. First, he reveals the existence of distinct cycles in world trade and payments, beginning in 1959. While scholars have recognized postwar business cycles, none have identified--until now--trade and payments cycles which seem to run parallel. Second, Cohen utilizes newly researched data to explore the much-heralded J-curve and its relevance in relating exchange rates to trade balances, and he identifies several important factors which have slowed the maturation of the J-curve effect on U.S. balances. The study is divided into four parts and begins by looking at the forces that have shaped the postwar trade and payments order. Cohen then turns to an investigation of the period of advance in the trade and payments order from 1945-1967, describing three distinct stages that reflect the emergence, the establishment, and the peak of this period. Section three begins with an analysis of the structure and causes of the four postwar trade and payments cycles and includes an examination of the differences among them. Subsequent chapters address the different cycles themselves, reviewing the history of each and evaluating the growing challenges to the postwar trade and payments order. In the concluding section, Cohen explores why the J-curve in the U.S. has been so weak during the current cycle and assesses the likely consequences of the failure of existing policies to reduce external imbalances. This coloring book is the best animal safari! Your child will see wonderful close-ups of a variety of animals. This coloring experience is what you would hope for in a zoo trip. Along with the detailed animal drawings, a desciption is included at the bottom of each page...just in case your child wants to know many facts about these amazing animals.

This coloring book is a fabulous way for my children and I to do something fun and constructive, "together" It also allows us to relax as we use our imaginations, yet trying to keep our coloring and blending of colors as close to the real paintings as possible. My children are young, 9 and 7, and I truly feel that this coloring book, aswell as other coloring books of its kind, help them "appreciate" art in a whole new way. And what could be more rewarding for them than to be able to display their final product in a window for everyone to see!
