Customer Reviews:
Great for recent grads, not seasoned pros.......2006-01-07
Okay, I'm not a seasoned professional, but I can write a resume, and pretty darn good one at that. However, I was looking for ways to give mine a new touch. I bought this book used, and it was worth the $7 I paid for it. I got a couple of new ideas, but it was more of the same old information.
Customer Reviews:
The deepest readily available paper atlas.......2002-01-21
I guess I'm old fashioned when it comes to using a telescope, but I prefer a paper atlas to laptops and software star atlases. And I also prefer star-hopping to using GOTO or setting circles. If you're like me, you already know you're buying this massive work. Yes it's expensive. Yes it weighs about twenty pounds. But it's the ultimate paper atlas for the star-hopper. The three volumes (each covering eight hours of RA) together have over one million stars plotted on their pages!
The binding and paper are of superb quality, sufficient for this atlas to actually be used out in the field! Unfortunately, after you see how pretty it is (and remember how much it cost), you'll probably be content to let it sit safely on the shelf to be used as a reference. Personally, I use an 8" Dob and hence generally observe objects bright enough for Tirion's Sky Atlas 2000.0 to be an adequate atlas. I have taken the MSA out a couple times but it was overkill.
For owners of larger scopes who wish to go after the fainter DSOs, a Mag 11 atlas like the MSA is a bare minimum. A computer atlas going down to Mag 13 or so would be even better, but if you like paper then the MSA is the way to go. I eventually do plan to make heavy use of the MSA out in the field, but probably not until I get a larger scope.
The closest competition to the MSA is Tirion's Uranometria 2000.0 2nd Edition. Note that although it doesn't plot anywhere near the number of stars the MSA does, Uranometria plots three times the number of deep sky objects (30,000). Therefore, owners of very large telescopes may be better served with Uranometria since it plots the very faint DSOs that MSA skips.
Millennium Star Atlas.......2000-06-09
The best description is a Massive Three Volume Set. This is a great Atlas - The organization is much better than Uranometria and the print and sizing of the stars is much better. This may not be the most practical at the telescope atlas but it is printed on high quality paper and the books do open and lay flat. I find this atlas very useful for going after the small faint stuff where you have to know the star patterns to ID the fields.

Book Description
Opening the Energy Gates of Your Body introduces the key concepts of chi gung in a manner both accessible and understandable to Westerners. With fascinating insights gained from years of training in Asia as a warrior, healer, and priest, Bruce Frantzis demystifies the concept of "chi," the body's vital energy life force, and shows why this 3000-year-old system of self-healing works. The book provides a set of enjoyable, low impact exercises that readers can learn on their own, including standing chi gung, a core exercise that effectively boosts performance for martial artists, athletes, business people, and others. Body alignments and Taoist breathing, fundamentals that are the foundation of all Taoist energy practices, are also taught, with special alignments that benefit those who must sit for long periods of time. The book also reveals how chi gung can enhance other forms of exercise, from yoga and Pilates to golf and basketball.

Athletes, Martial Artists, Dancers, Movement Therapists take notice!.......2007-08-19
If your life revolves around movement you must learn what Bruce Frantzis writes about in this book. Studying and practicing the knowledge presented in this work will most definitely improve and enhance your ability "to move" and if necessary, rehabilitate your physical and energetic bodies. Outward movement begins inside and this book explains the how and why. I have been a practitioner of the internal arts for thirty years and know that if you haven't had exposure to Bruce's teachings, you are short-changing yourself. Study this book and be amazed!
Definitely one of the top books out there to start with .......2007-08-15
It seems that many reviewers consider this book, and Master Lam's "Way of Energy", to be two great starting points in learning Qigong, and specifically the various Zhang Zhuang forms of "still standing" or "standing like a tree". I have to say that I fully agree.
I was very, very impressed with the extent of BK Frantzis' writing in this book. He seemed to find the perfect balance of anecdotes, history of the form, explanations and diagrams of forms & postures, discussions of Qi, meridians...and especially what goes on internally during the standing process.
I had practiced Tai Chi and Kenpo karate when I was a kid, and thought I therefore had some idea of what to expect. Wrong! I was bowled over by how demanding these seemingly "simple" standing exercises were, both physically, but even moreso mentally. Being an experienced meditator in a variety of techniques, I found these postures were the perfect challenge for me: a way to make me take things I had learned on my own or through other traditions, and combine them with the way BK Frantzis offers. I knew the power the mind had to achieve internal peacefulness, help achieve goals, and improve general health...but I had absolutely no idea it could affect the physical body like it has using these postures.
Some positive effects after studying and practicing the Opening Gates and Lam's Way of Energy materials:
--Back pain and tightness about 75% lessened; feels like I've received a professional massage after each standing meditation.
--Hypertension and other symptoms of anxiety almost completely erased, especially an over-sweating problem I had for a long while.
--Better control over my breath; changing my entire breathing around, especially just normally when not doing exercises, from the belly/tantien/diaphram instead of from the chest was one of the best changes I've made in my life.
--More self confidence, energy and positive emotions then I've had in years.
--Peace of mind easier to attain.
--My other meditation practices have deepened to huge extents after applying some of Frantzis' Zhang Zhuang/Qigong techniques of visualization and control of Chi energy to my earlier practice.
--Better sense and awareness of my own body, particularly aches, muscles, pains, and especially stress...and how to go about making them feel better.
--No need to drink caffeine to wake me up in the morning anymore...Qigong does the trick!
I'm also impressed with the depth of Frantzis' writing; he supplies numerous anecdotes, pictures, diagrams, and extremely detailed explanations for every possible thing you could want to know about beginning this practice. All in all, this combined with Lam's book are two of the best books that I've ever brought into my life. No dollar amount can be put on both the physical relief and internal peace of mind I've experienced since working with these exercises. Fabulous book, highly recommended.
Engaging material, but the method did not work for me. .......2007-04-29
To his credit, the author writes very well about his experiences with chi kung, martial arts, and healing; and the method and motivation behind each exercise are detailed and thorough. But I tried his exercises diligently every day for well over a year (supplemented with a VHS of the same material demonstrated and taught by Frantzis), with no appreciable benefit in stress reduction, health promotion or chi development. I came to the conclusion that Frantzis might talk a good fight, but I needed a different approach to reach my goals for fitness, health and vitality.
Fortunately, Stewart Alve Olson's Tai Chi Chi Kung method, which I learned from Olson himself, turned out to be exactly what I needed at the time, and later experiences with Flying Phoenix and 18 Buddha Hands helped me even more. So you can count me as a believer in the efficacy of chi kung, but I think you need to learn this stuff directly from the teacher at some point in order to truly benefit, and in any case, there are better methods and teachers out there.
I am sure that many people will find the book (and Frantzis' other materials) of great benefit; it's also possible that live instruction from the man himself would make the material more effective; but it just wasn't right for my needs.
Wonderful Book.......2006-08-06
I have several books on Chi Gung and this book compliments the rest. There is always more to learn and I did. The author writes beautifully and with enthusiasm. My Brother is a doctor of Chinese medicine, acupunture and also teachers Chi Gung and Tai Chi. I sent a copy to Shanghai for him to read, he said it is a great addition to his library.
Still the best book on qigong (neigong) around.......2006-05-21
Most people will not have the discipline and patience to work through this workbook on qigong, but for those who do, this is absolutely the finest presentation around. Even more advanced practioners will want to refer to this fundamental book again and again.
This book works through the physical alignments and beginning standing-dissolving practice as foundation for all advanced work in healing, martial, and meditative qigong/neigong.
The old edition was excellent, but the new revised edition is even better, adding a step-by-step chapter on Taoist breathing which is a very welcome addition, and one which is a stand-alone practice in its own right.

Useful and helpful...but not as comprehensive as other Lonely Planet Phrasebooks.......2007-05-28
Here's what it comes down to: If you're going to Myanmar/Burma and don't have a phrase book, then get this one for yourself and tell everyone else you're going with to get it!
I lived in Myanmar for a while and found this quite useful, especially back when I knew only a few words of Burmese. I would stumble through and try to pronounce the text and fail miserably (though not the fault of the book as they do a good job trying to discuss pronounciation).
Then I would point to the word or phrase in the book. The person I'm "talking" with would then stare at the page for a moment, see the Burmese script, then understand what I was trying to say.
Now that I can do basic conversation and basic reading/writing, I've found it to be a good resourse to keep on hand.
So, if you're going to Myanmar/Burma, take this phrasebook along, you won't regret it, even if you do have to point to the text because of your poor pronounciation!!
My only complaint is that there were times where it seemed additional phrases should be included in this type of phrasebook to make it as comprehensive as other ones.
By the way, just about everyone I showed this phrasebook to wanted a copy so they could learn more English. You might even want to order a few extra for your trip to give away.

Very Handy.......2002-06-14
I have visited Myanmar three times (and plan a fourth) since purchasing this phrasebook. I would not even consider traveling to Myanmar without it. It won't teach you Burmese, but it will do what it is for -- provide you with phrases. At first you will feel like you have to be able to read the author's mind to know where in the book to find the right phrase. The best approach: just remember where you are, hotel, restaurant, etc. It works.
Burmese Phrasebook.......2000-06-26
This is exactly the type of reference book I was looking for. Not only does the book breakdown the phonetics of Burmese in a step-by-step manner, it also is very easy to place in my pocketbook. I have used the book to help me communicate with my nanny and that in itself is a blessing. While I use the book to freshen up on my Burmese, my nanny loves perusing through it to freshen up on her English.

Book Description
Throughout much of the world, two seemingly paradoxical trends are occurring simultaneously. Countries are becoming ever more integrated economically--and in some cases politically--but power is devolving from national governments to regional and local governments.
Earl Fry explores the forces behind the rise of state and local influence in foreign affairs. As Americans become increasingly involved beyond U.S. borders--whether through trade, immigration, travel, or the Internet--the federal government is less able to regulate the multiple strands of U.S. involvement in the world. State and local governments increasingly shape the ways Americans cope with the outside world. Fry suggests how the different levels of U.S. government can best share the conduct of international relations.
Customer Reviews:
All Over the Place.......2000-01-17
This book is all over the place with its analysis, never really getting much into the real debates surrounding municipal foreign policy today. Fry begins by describing how we live in a globalized world and discusses the inefficency of large national government. Although these issues are vital to a discussion of municipal foreign policy, Fry spends more than half the book giving this introduction. When municipal foreign policy does get discussed it is mainly economic relationships between states such as the promotion of tourism. Where the debates on municipal foreign policy lie, such as divestment/selective purchasing, nuclear free zones, and the sanctuary movement, Fry spends only a few paragraphs on each, and only briefly mentions the supreme court cases that relate to this issue. I found Heidi Hobbs' "City Hall Goes Abroad" much more helpful for a real discussion of this issue.

Book Description
More than 600 species are described in detail, with more than 525 illustrations. This is the guide for quick, reliable identification of fishes that you'll encounter while fishing, snorkeling, diving, or even strolling along a Pacific Coast beach.
Customer Reviews:
Great Pictures.......2006-02-25
I had purchased this item before, and loved it! The only problem is that the wonderful color photos in the middle of the book fell out! It got destroyed inevitably by my husband, so I have purchased it for a second time. This book gives you many many helpful ways to identify fish in the pacific ocean--in fact, haven't found a fish yet that wasn't in this book, but dearly would love to find some of the fish that ARE in the book!
a field guide to pacific coast fishes:north america petersons field guides.......2005-09-10
The book is great I use it on our boat every weekend the pictures are very life like and accurate very informative
Peterson solid installment........2004-07-07
This Peterson's Guide to Pacific Coast Fishes is extremely concise and contains countless family, genus, and species entries. Also, this is one of the very few field guides that adds deepsea and pelagic fishes to their list. This section is enough for the price right there! The deep ocean fishes illustrated are stunning, and inspire the reader to explore the deep domain sometime in the future. An example of a deep sea fish is the Daggertooth: a bizarre, 20 inch rodlike fish with a mouth full of razor sharp, daggerlike teeth. This is only a single of the many deep sea families listed.
Another completely amazing but unknown fish family listed are the Poachers. These fish are difficult to describe, but have a few traits of an alligator, to put it simply.
There are dozens more stunning species to be found here, but you will have to read it to find the most mysterious and exhilarating ones. Also, this ocean field guide uses the best identification tool, drawings. Whether for the interested fish worshipper, or the expert marine biologist, this book will please all fascinated by the ocean.
Another great guide from Peterson.......2001-09-14
I bought this book in anticipation of a SCUBA trip down the west coast next year. Why? Because I have good luck with Peterson guides and know that they are concise, well written and all inclusive. So far, as I try to gain some familiarity with the fishes of the west coast before I go I have not been disappointed. I'm sure that this book is to the west coast what the Atlantic guide is to the east and gulf coast. I'll write another review after I finish my trip.
Peterson Field Guides Pacific Coast Fishes.......2000-02-08
This is a well-written, well-organized field guide, like all other Peterson Field Guides. The book is divided into five parts: 1. About This Book, a very brief introduction of the book; 2. Collectin and Observing Fishes, again, a brief chapter, but very useful. The next three chapters are divided into: 3. Jawless Fishes; 4. Sharks, Rays and Chimaeras and 5. Bony fishes, which is where the bulk of the book is about. The book also contained an excellent glossary, and a limited number of references. Particularly useful are the detailed habitat information of each fish described, ways to identify them, and of course, the 48 pages of color and black and white drawings of the fishes. The book is an invaluable sources of information not only to ichthyologist, naturalist, but also to the comercial fisherman, professional anglers and recreational angler. The only complaint I had is that this field guide uses artists' drawing for the fishes instead of the actual picture of the fish. With the actual picture of the fish, it will make the identification of an unknown fishe much easier for the amateurs and weekend angler. Overall, an excellent book.
