In The Crystal Desert David Campbell weaves together travelogue gathered from his many visits to the wind-blasted continent of Antarctica, along with natural history, oceanography, and accounts of the tortured attempts of earlier exploratory missions "in an alien environment, beyond the edge of the habitable earth." He's a gifted writer with an especially fine hand at making his readers feel right at home in a place very few of us will ever get to see. Armchair travelers couldn't ask for a better book, no matter what the season.

          Book Description

THE CRYSTAL DESERT: SUMMERS IN ANTARCTICA is the story of life's tenacity on the coldest of Earth's continents. It tells of the explorers who discovered Antarctica, of the whalers and sealers who despoiled it, and of the scientists who are deciphering its mysteries. In beautiful, lucid prose, David G. Campbell chronicles the desperately short summers on the Antarctic Peninsula. He presents a fascinating portrait of the evolution of life in Antarctica and also of the evolution of the continent itself.

5 out of 5 stars The Crystal Desert: Summers in Antarctica.......2007-03-10

I enjoyed reading this book and it provided me with a lot of information that I found very useful. I had no idea what it was like in Antarctica and this book helped me get a feel for it.

3 out of 5 stars A good (not great) read on Antarctica if you are going there........2006-11-18

There may be a growing body of literature on Antarctica, but let's face it: about 80% of it is about Amundsen, Scott, or Shackleton. That's fine, but if you're reading in preparation for a trip to Antarctica, you want more. Campbell's book is a very readable albeit superficial overview of the wildlife and physical landscape you're likely to encounter. I agree with other reviewers that Campbell comes across as stuck-up, and I do take exception to his disparaging of tourists, since my experience has been that Antarctic tourists tend to be very environmentally respectful. I recommend the book because its insights and information did enhance my enjoyment of Antarctica and the South Shetlands.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting look at the flora/fauna of Antarctica.......2006-09-26

Very interesting reading for those with limited knowledge of what kinds of life exist in this hostile locale.

2 out of 5 stars Not About Antarctica.......2003-10-01

This was a disappointing read, mainly because it isn't about Antarctica, but about King George Island. Like writing a book about North America from research conducted on Cuba. Yes, Cuba is part of North America, but... If you want information on Antarctica, look elsewhere. Why he named it "Crystal Desert" is beyond me because there is NOTHING on the ice cap. Secondly, Campbell, who may or may not be a competent biologist, spends far to much time grinding his environmental axe. For some reason, he thinks he and other academicians are the only people with the right to go to Antarctica, making numerous disparaging comments about tourism throughout the text. Moreover, he seems to have a major problem with males - be they human, sperm whale, or elephant seal, espousing traits such as "machismo" and other derogatory human emotions to these animals simply because they are larger than the females. And finally, he spends the entire final third of the book expounding on the horrors of the seal and whale hunts that decimated the populations of these magnificant animals. Unfortunate, definately. But the book is supposed to be about Antarctica - not a treatise on over-sealing and over-whaling by people from another period in time. It does have some good descriptions of Admiralty Bay on King George Island - mainly from a biological perspective, but overall, it was a waste of time.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but the author isn't big on introspection.......2003-06-01

Since I've visited Antarctica, and enjoyed its haunting, indifferent beauty as well as the spectacular wildlife, I was interested in reading an account of someone who had lived, studied, and conducted research there.

Campbell's strength is writing about the science, the wildlife, the extremes of weather and of living in a difficult place. His weakness is his utter lack of self-analysis. He berates the tourists who come to this place (does he think he owns the Antarctic area himself?), and laments the loss of microscopic and macroscopic life that is lost when the loutish tourist dares step on the fragile landscape, yet he is blissfully unaware of the far greater damage he does to the ecosystem when he powers up the hills to work on the weatherstation, and when he pulls up marine creatures and watches them burst, dying, under his microscope.

I guess anything is fair game when done under the guise of 'science', but woe be to the ordinary person who dares to learn about one of the farthest reaches of the planet.

the idiots who put this book together placed a segment of 35 pages in upside down and backwards.... who lets that kind of mistake pass thru quality control. there was no info on my invoice like a number to call or a place to email to complain and return the book. This book was under the description as "NEW." Very upset with Amazon lately.

The Certified Diver's Handbook is a wonderful reivew book for all divers, new and old school. This book provides a great reference for new divers to continue improving their diving habits. It's also a good review book for divers who do not have the opportunity to dive on a regular basis.

This is a fantastic book. It covers just about every thing and is easy to understand. He even attempts a little humor. Well worth the price!!!!

5 out of 5 stars A bookshelf must for all divers........2007-01-21

If you only have one book on diving in your bookshelf the "Certified Diver's Handbook" must be a top contender.
One of the most informative handbooks I have ever read. I no way does Clay Coleman try to overwhelm with a "I know it all" attitude. He gives sound solid advice based on experience and analysis of many years diving.
Covers almost every aspect of recreational diving in an easy to read and easy to remember layout. A book for divers that have 5 to 500 dives in their logbooks.

                      Simply excellent!

5 out of 5 stars great review and guide book.......2006-03-03

Having not been diving in 1.5 years, I wanted to review some things before getting back in the water, so I bought this book. I thought this book was great. The author talked about his experiences, some techniques he has found useful, and procedures/ways to make things easier. Seems to cover everything, from multiple chapters on equipment to shore vs boat diving, how to deal with problems etc, etc. Very easy to read and understand how to apply what you read.

                        Book Description

This lively best seller by leading Colorado historians Steve Leonard and Tom Noel is the most comprehensive survey ever written of the Mile High metropolis. Informative and richly illustrated, Denver covers the developing region from the mountain towns of Boulder and Jefferson counties to the High Plains settlements of Adams and Arapahoe counties, with more than two-thirds of the book devoted to the burgeoning five-county region since 1900.

In retelling the tale of conquest and city building, the authors explore the role of previously neglected peoples--notably women, ethnic minorities, and the working class--while weaving several key themes throughout the book: Denver's persistent reliance on natural resources, the important role of transportation to overcome the city's isolation, and the city's emphasis on privatization rather than on the public, common good. Denver: Mining Camp to Metropolis will fascinate and educated students and scholars, as well as all readers curious about the boom-and-bust metropolis of the Rockies.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent, with a need for a new edition.......2000-10-05

Published in 1990, this book functions as a dense introduction to the full span of Denver history -- from the town's beginnings as a provider of goods and services to miners leaving for the mountains, to its rise as a transportation and medical hub of the Plains, to its recent oil and high-tech booms. The book is thoughtful and intelligent (and basically the only solid semi-recent book I can find about Denver). The ten years since the book was published have seen immense change in Denver (economic revival, massive suburban growth), however, and the volume sorely needs a discussion of how the recent decade's events and growth have changed the metropolitan area.

                          Product Description

A mosaic of teen chaos, confusion and sexual anarchy is the backdrop for suburban ninth-grader Alison Gepner’s search for meaning and first love. A “good girl” who would rather be seen as an edgy individualist, Alison is surrounded by the soldiers of a cruel and crushing teen culture. She faces the fight of her life, just to have a life. The wily schemes of a jealous competitor (Claire, the newly slimmed-down group home girl) threaten to take away Alison’s new connection with the intensely attractive and mysterious Elijah before she can claim him as her own. The adult world, too, seems to be a lonely mess, full of insecure “helpers” who cling by their fingertips to the illusion of control.

                          5 out of 5 stars Required Reading..........2006-05-07

Author Jerry Sander captures what it is like to be in high school, whether you are a student or faculty. His prose is often times almost too real..."Can I ask you something really personal?" asked Alison..."Do you get high?" and thus begins the conversation between Alison and Elijah, a new guy at school. Their relationship, just one of many in the book, is realistic, fresh and should set the standards for fiction on this level in the future.

Another conversation between Alison and Elijah begins..."I've never appreciated silence before," which seemed kind of ironic, being that shat she had just destroyed it. But she hadn't. Because the next silence was being born even as the sound of her voice died away..." And on it goes.

Elijah later tells someone else..."Drugs are for the unimaginative. I take my own adventures."

Sure, there is sex, violence, drugs and complicated relationships in "Permission Slips" but isn't that what life is really about? Wouldn't you rather read a book with substance than one that is all fluff? This book grabs you from the beginning and doesn't let go even when you're finished.

                          5 out of 5 stars Permission Granted.......2005-12-29

                          Realistic. Almost frightning.
If only the superintendent had her office across from the lunchroom.
Each character is easy to relate too. Each one is a real high schooler, with real high school problems: simple and complex, often both at the same time.

Changed the way I think about high school.

5 out of 5 stars A dark, sometimes violent story of struggling to maintain a stable life.......2005-11-11

Permission Slips is a dark novel about the chaos of teen life, written by high school student assistance counselor and parent Jerry Sander. Permission Slips is not sanitized for one's emotional protection, like most novels about a ninth- grader lost in the chaos of high school are, and not intended expressly for young adults - which may be a moot point since far too many young people live in the world of meanness, uncontrolled sexuality, mindless conformity, and brutal demands to be cruel enough and dumb enough to fit in with the group. A dark, sometimes violent story of struggling to maintain a stable life, identity, and maybe even find love amidst the worst youth has to offer.

                          5 out of 5 stars A+++.......2005-10-15

Permission Slip's breaks down the institution that has so often been stereotyped and presents it without the saccharine. Hadleyville High overlaps the chaos at both the adult and teen levels to recreate an atmosphere any reader will be sure to find strikingly real.
The greatest strength of the story is in its presentation of how one place- a typical American high school- unites characters that under any other circumstance would never interact, let alone share 7 hours a day under the same roof. Sander's ability to add a genuine depth to each character gives the reader a multi-angled perspective of a setting normally seen through only one pair of eyes. An all around must-read for anyone with an appreciation for unpasteurized truth.

                          5 out of 5 stars A Thoroughly Enjoyable Read.......2005-08-09

I didn't know what to expect on buying this book and although there are many differences between the American education system and the Scottish education system, it's really not that different when it comes to a lot of the basic problems and challenges pupils and teachers face on a daily basis.

The striking honesty in some parts of the book certainly gives you something to think on and makes you realise that everyone is human and yet the antics and goings on between the students brings fun and humour in to balance it all out into what I thought was a thoroughly enjoyable read and I certainly look forwards to Jerry's next book.

                                Book Description

Motigraphics is the natural complement to demographics and psychographics - the completion of a triad. For consumers, because motives are the most important dimension of human behavior, motives lead directly to decisions, and decisions lead directly to purchasing behavior. Demographics and psychographics tell us the what, when, where, and how of consumer behavior; but motigraphics tells us why consumers do what they do. Dr. Maddock maintains that academic psychology has failed to provide a formal approach to motivation; thus, marketers have never been able to get a firm grasp on why consumers prefer what they do, why they cancel and don't renew, and what factors enter into their decision making at the point of sale. With Motigraphics we can now measure and compute motives, and the strength of motivation allows us to determine how much equity a brand Motigraphics allows us to describe customer loyalty in terms of a quantitative motivational profile and scale. Not only does Dr. Maddock show how to measure motives, he also helps us assess the amount of emotion involved in a product or service. Since most consumer decisions are based on emotion, not reason, the importance of Dr. Maddock's book for psychologists, marketers, and advertising and sales professionals is self-evident and inestimable.

                                4 out of 5 stars Motigraphics.......2000-07-20

Dr. Maddock's book offers insights into human motivation that are easily understood and more importantly, easily adapted - especially in the marketing arena. Complex issues that have perplexed me for 26 years as a marketing professional have now become significantly simpler as a result of reading this book. The basic premise that spiritual survival is actually more motivating than physical survival helps explain behavior that has historically become jumbled into tired traditional research jargon that is unusable beyond a single study. This book is now on the shelves of every client we handle. And every prospect as well. If you are in marketing, you will either read and use this book to understand your customers, or pray your customers don't.

                                        Book Description

On the great East African plain it is the human who feels himself the intruder. Here, and perhaps only here, the world is that of the animals. It is they who belong, as humans do not. In the more sensitive traveler this evokes a feeling of being privileged to observe ancient forms, settings and behavior that have survived intact from pre-history.

"Matthiessen has the language to express this feeling of awe...Matthiessen also goes into the relationships between humans past and present in East Africa's great fauna with many a flash of insight into the instincts each has bred in the other...This is the Africa book par excellence." (Saturday Review)

                                        5 out of 5 stars Transcendent Prose.......2007-02-09

This is one my very favorite of Matthiessen's impressive canon, ranking easily with Far Tortuga and The Snow Leopard. Indeed, I think some of the passages in The Tree Where Man Was Born might surpass the stunning Himalaya descriptions in the latter book. Matthiessen's eye for landscapes is unparalleled, and his lyric evocations of beast and horizon have an otherworldly quality. A prime example, and one to look out for, is his account of finding rhinoceros tracks on the high volcanic slopes of Mt. Lengai. Another highlight are his crystalline observations of ecological moments during a vigil atop an East African kopje.

5 out of 5 stars Good combination of natural atmosphere and history.......2001-07-19

I wasn't certain what to expect when I got this book. I was a bit concerned that since it was written about experiences in the 1960's that it would feel a bit dated. Although the 1960's view of the future of East Africa's peoples and wildlife is not entirely accurate, I am finding the book to be an excellent way to prepare for a trip to Tanzania--for someone wanting a combination of background on the peoples, landscape and wildlife. Matthiessen's usual subdued, to me, dry style seems leavened a bit by his awe. And the account of the elephant researcher who's 'close encounter' approach puts Matthiessen off his feed, was really enjoyable to me--a departure from his usual, very dry approach. I recommend this one to anyone interested in the peoples and wildlife of Eastern Africa.

5 out of 5 stars A loving and detailed account of a difficult journey.......2000-06-28

Is there anyplace wild enough to lift the weight that Occidental culture has placed on our shoulders? Africa, where the first man walked erect, may be the last place where man can feel awed enough by Nature to try and remember that he, also, is just another among the millions of other species that populate the planet. Paul Bowles, Bruce Chatwin, Doris Lessing, Isaak Dinesen and Peter Mattieshen found that answer, and shared the experience. In Mattieshen's poetic account, the tragic and fabulous beauty of a continent that has been devastated by greed and war is revealed, as the impossibility of traveling Africa and not falling in love with it and being changed by it forever.
