A classic work.......1999-08-14

When THE TIMES (London) referred to Bill Reddin as the management guru they ranked him with the likes of Peter Drucker, Ted Levitt and John Humble. This is an extraordinary work which will be better appreciated in the coming years. Reddin died in June of 1999 and already over 50 PhD dissertations have been written on his work. A good buy, a good read and a thoroughly useful book.

Wake up America Nature has ways of making us eat humble pie.......2000-09-01

Mr Raeburn's book is a wake up call to all those who think our scientists have all the answers. He exposes Big Agriculture's propoganda that we (they ?) are in control of our food supply. The immense diversity of edible foods is the true secret of nature's success, while reliance on a few varieties of grains, fruits and vegetables could spell disaster for the world's food supply.

In my opinion he doesn't get into the argument enough about the control exercized over Governments and Agricultural Depts by huge multi-national agricultural corporations, whose sole purpose is to increase shareholder earnings (its the "nature" of the beast).

For example Mad Cow disease is most likely one of the side effects of incomplete science used by those Ag Corps who used bovine hormone treatments to artificially increase yields ! The thought of the future side effects of genetic engineering, when most scientists say it is as much an art as a science, really scares me.

Despite the relatively neutral stance Raeburn takes, his work is still a good wake up call. His questioning the "playing at God" scientists, many funded by Big Industry Agriculture, has drawn critics to say his book is scientifically unfounded. This is a simplistic argument often used by self-serving interests and ego-sensitive scientists.

A good follow up to reading this book is Edward O Wilson's, "The Diversity of Life".

The book is needlessly alarmist and scientifically groudless.......1999-04-16

I suggest you to find something better to read. Even if the auctor is an award winner, that doesn't mean that all what he writes is reliable. A last suggestion: even if you'll read this book, don't be panicked: real possibilities of genetic engeneering are far better than what he suggests to be in his book.

A map showing the fourteen natural divisions is included.

Mohlenbrock also provides the general keys enabling the user to determine family names, and provides also keys to the 3,047 taxa of plants in the state. The data supplied for each taxon give the common name, if there is one, the months when flowering plants bloom, the habitat, geographical distribution, and, for very rare plants, the counties in which they have been found.

In convenient-size format for use as a field guide (a centimeter scale is printed on the endleaves), the book will be useful also as a textbook in high school as well as college and university classes.

Pretty good Illinois plant identification book........2000-06-14

The Guide to the Vascular Flora of Illinois is helpful in identifying most unknown plants to genus and species. Although, a botanical dictionary is a must to understand a majority of the terms. I find this book greatly helpful for any college student interested in botany. This is a wonderful book, but it definitely needs to be updated because new species of plants have been found since it was first published. Currently is the ultimate Illinois plant identification book until a new one comes along to take its place.

Good Message, Just Way Too Long..........2007-06-14

Being a golfer who can shoot in the 70's on one day, then in the 90's the next, I figured the best thing I could add to my bag was a book or several on the mental aspects of the game. And, this is one of the most useful I've read. The author applies Professor Albert Bandura's credible concept of self-efficacy to a game that is oh so mental (I suggest you read Bandura's 1994 hallmark paper entitled "Self-efficacy" for more insight). Clearly, this book is helping me go lower and play more consistently. My primary criticism of the book is that the author takes way too long to deliver the message. I was compelled to skip pages containing endless examples and redundant messages. I guess Valiante wanted to hit the 200 page standard to justify the price, but he could have written it in 50 pages.

Nonetheless, if you experience rather wild fluctuations in performance, this book will likely ring true for you.

OK, it started badly for me. The first chapter is somewhat repetitive.

I persisted and found to my delight a book that is valuable, well written and insightful. I don't know what happened in the writing of this book but I found the start nausiating and the rest of the book to be marvellous.

Dr Valiante has changed my focus from the purely mechanical to include the mental side in my swing preparation. My golf swing has become smoother, more focused, more targeted and more confident.

Really relax when you play golf. Among other useful tips, this book will teach you how reducing your grip pressure will improve your shot.

Detailed but disappointing.......2003-01-11

I find this guide much less useful than the guides by Jonnie Godfrey and Elizabeth Karslake (Western Crete and Eastern Crete, in the Sunflower Landscapes series). Wilson's guide contains fairly detailed verbal descriptions of numerous trails and a few black-and-white photographs, but there are no maps (the Sunflower guides show all trails in small full-colour reproductions of sections of a large-scale topographical map of the island, as well as an overall map of the island on which is indicated all the trails or tours covered in the guide). While Wilson's guide might, I suppose, be preferred by those with lots of serious hiking and mountaineering experience using compass and binoculars, people like me who want a map of where they're going will be disappointed with this book.

The route descriptions are fairly detailed, but (unlike the Sunflower series) neglect to mention some things important to more mortal hikers and walkers, like where on which hikes those prone to vertigo will need some help.

I was hooked by the characters and the story.......2005-05-20

This book starts slowly, but by half way through I was so hooked I had to read on without a break. I felt I already knew Charlie, who tells the story, and I was fascinated by her obstinate (and intelligent) younger brother Jerry.
The book deals with friendship, secrets, morality, family discipline, mental illness and urban street life. It has strong, believable characters, and it allows the reader to make up his or her mind about who's right and who's wrong.
I also loved some of the dialog:
"I want to feel the dark against my skin". Jerry says, explaining why he wants to go outside at night.
The book builds up to a dramatic and scary climax, that will keep you involved, make you sad, and will give you a lot to think about.

A Naturalist's Guide to One Part of the Arctic.......2007-08-23

This is an informative read, but not very practical for someone visiting the arctic of Europe or Asia. It's just about Canada and Greenland, although nothing in the title or description provides a clue of this. If you are visiting Svalbard,for instance, some of this information applies, but most of the book won't apply. You'll end up leaving the book at home.

Arctic Ecotour guide's life-line.......2003-05-23

I worked for four years in a remote, eco-lodge and used to carry at least five books for the guest who wanted to know everything. When I found this book, it remidied the necessity to carry so many books. This book covers enough topics to be useful in almost every situation. It is well written and clear. This book was my life-line and I recommend it to everyone who is travelling north of the tree-line.

a book to be read again and again.......2001-05-22

I have backpacked on the arctic plain on numerous occasions. Having this book along helps one appreciate the beauty and inter-related nature of the terrain. This is a book to be read more than once; read it on the flight to Alaska. Reading about how the insects torment the caribou makes one appreciate that one has repellants along, and a tent to be inside of. Of the various guides I have been with, this is almost a standard reference book to have with them.

Beautifully illustrated, elegantly written.......2000-05-20

This book is a "must have" for the advanced undergraduate, beginning grad student, or serious amateur naturalist interested in the North. While a combination of other books may be more comprehensive, if I had to trek north to the Yukon, this is what I would throw in my backpack. Pielou's knowledge and love of the high latitudes bursts through every page, and the pen and ink illustrations convey a real sense of both fauna and flora.
