              Book Description

The biggest paradox in golf is that the harder you try to "hit" the ball, the worse you do so. In The Keys to the Effortless Golf Swing, Michael McTeigue offers you a simple system of sequential body movements that produces a true swinging motion with every club in the bag. The result is increased distance and greater accuracy for all sizes, shapes, and ages of golfers for a minimum investment in learning time.

The clarity and simplicity of McTeigue's frell-free approach to the golf swing leads the reader to a new experience of power and effortlessness. He truly shows how to "build a swing you can trust and keep for life."

If you love golf but have never played to your potential, here is a book that you will quickly come to treasure.

              5 out of 5 stars Simplicity.......2007-06-11

I have probably read 50 different books on golf instruction. This one is not only the best, but a remarkably easy one to follow and implement. It has done wonders for my golf swing in a very short period of time. If you are religious in following its simple steps to learning (in most cases without a golf club in your hands), you will be amazed at your improvement.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Golf Swing Tip Eluded Me - Until Now.......2007-06-09

The very first time I played golf I got a hole-in-one.
              It's been downhill ever since.
I was 15 years old and 35 years later I was still struggling to break 80. I'd hit the ball OK some days, but usually I always put too much pressure on my short game to score. I read all the books, took all the lessons and beat balls on the range until my hands bled. Mechanically everything always looked copasetic, but yet I was never consistent in ball striking. Thin, fat, toe, hook, push, etc.

I knew it was important to be in a relaxed and "athletic position" at address. My inherent problem was with excess tension THROUGHOUT the swing. I mistook power for the "coiling of the spring", (bad metaphor!). At the top of my backswing my arms, shoulders and torso were tied in one big connected KNOT. Like most men I thought muscle strength was the key to distance and I would try to over power everything without knowing it. Think Vijay Singh, Fred Couples, Ernie Els. Swing easy, hit hard.

So I took to the range after reading this book with yet another tip to experiment on like I've been doing on and off almost all my life; low and behold, once I relaxed my arms and shoulders throughout the swing and hit the ball in a much more free flowing fashion, I swear to God I felt like the incarnation of Ben Hogan. Solid, straight shots like never before. Feeling the ball compress against the face of the club each time was sublime. Working it right and left at will.

I'm now regularly shooting in the seventies from the pro tees and focusing more on the short game to start beating old man par. I may even start competing in some amateur events next year. The key is ZERO TENSION in all muscles throught the swing. Tension destroys the golf swing. Let the club swing itself. As Sam Snead said, "Feel oily".

The reason a good teaching pro could never help me is because they could not "feel" what I was feeling at the top of my swing. Thanks Michael McT. You saved a once putrid golfers soul. This book is a "diamond in the rough", no pun intended!

4 out of 5 stars Old golfer says:.......2007-04-15

I've been trying to learn to play golf for some years now and found some very good help in various places. Swinging too hard and just trying to hit the ball have been my constant downfall. Tis book is finally helping me to understand and execute a smoother more fluid golf swing. FHurray.

Not only that: this book has helped me understand a number of concepts that I have been constantly encouraged to do and never understood.

I wish that I had found it years ago.

5 out of 5 stars If you love golf and want to play better, do yourself a favor and work with the ideas in this book.......2007-03-10

I am 46 and have been playing golf since I was in my late teens. There is no question in my mind that the better you can play this game the more enjoyable it is. Those players who say it doesn't matter are simply not being honest with themselves. Sure I love being on the course especially with good company, but what is supposed to be a pleasurable hobby can be far from it when you are playing poorly. Lets face it; all of us have been there, and all of us want to improve. Unfortunately golf is not like many things we do in that practice doesn't neccessarily make perfect. If what we are working on (based on information we are given) is even slightly flawed, improvement is not likely to occurr despite our best efforts. Since golf is one area where there's no shortage of instructional material, our success will largely be determined by the effort we put in and information we use. Fortunately the author of this book, Michael McTeigue, has presented in his words "everything you need to know." I could not agree with him more. As a dedicated student of the game who wanted to improve, I went from book to book and theory to theory until I came across this little book. The book gave me a systematic method by which I have enjoyed considerable improvement in only a few months. If you're tired of hours of unproductive practice, I highly recommend you work with the ideas in this book.

I did not like this book at all. The Wakefield twins, who the series is meant to be about, hardly featured in this book. It mostly deals with the story of Jean West and Sandy Bacon. TTHe storyline is very predictable and it ends badly. Not a good Sweet Valley High book.

                          Book Description

Standard economic theory of consumer behavior considers consumers' preferences, their incomes and commodity prices to be the determinants of consumption. However, consumption takes time and no consumer has more--or less--than 168 hours per week. This simple fact is almost invisible in standard theory, and takes the center stage in this book.

                            Book Description

What is the place of agriculture in terms of its contribution to a nation's wealth and share in employment? What is the amount, structure and composition of agricultural production and inputs? What is the remuneration of production factors, what incomes are derived from this activity? The Economic Accounts for Agriculture provide precise answers to these and many other questions for the great majority of OECD countries. They give indispensable insights into the economic viability and quantitative interrelationships in agriculture and, hence, respond to a growing need to have such an internationally comparable information base across OECD countries. This data-set covers the period 1990 to 1996 with longer time-series contained in the electronic version as well as the year 1997 for key variables. It provides a coherent and detailed framework for quantifying agricultural output and its components, intermediate consumption, different value added and income measures, and capital formation.

                            Book Description

This book examines the British government's negotiation of the Treaty on European Union which took place between December 1990 and December 1991. On the basis of documentary and interview-based evidence from leading participants from Britain and Europe, it offers a unique insight into the objectives and motivations of the British government. It analyzes the various constraints and pressures that impinged on the British government and sets its successes and failures in the Maastricht negotiations in a broader context of British European policy.

Anthony Forster's volume is a timely case study of Britain's role in the Maastricht negotiations. Its informative narrative and empirical analysis are based on a thorough understanding of the intricacies of intergovernmental conference (IGC) diplomacy and the domestic politics of one of the European Community's/Union's larger member states. Forster concisely explains the relationship between the two intergovernmental conferences on Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) and Political Union and the significant reasons behind their linkage: 1. the requirements of domestic ratification of the two Treaties that emerged from the Maastricht European Council in December 1991; 2. and an implicit understanding between Mitterrand and Kohl that their countries' commitment to European integration was a long-term one.

Forster chooses an in-depth look at one member state's domestic and European priorities over a manageable time period thus allowing him to analyze the constitutional, economic, historical, ideological, institutional, political and social facet's of Britain's policy in Europe. In view of the legacy Mrs. Thatcher bequeathed to her successor, Mr. John Major, the ideological aspect is particularly relevant on the domestic political scene; here Forster is balanced in his analysis of "the party management dimension." Likewise, Forster distinguishes intelligently between the important role Delors played in the EMU conference from that of the Commission as a whole and from Delors' difficulties during the negotiations on Political Union. Always present is a well-crafted profile of the national context, including debates about the implications of deeper integration for British sovereignty, discussions about the economic merits of a single currency and conflicts among personalities brought up by EMU within the ranks of Conservative party politics.

Forster is right to consider the tactical mistakes British negotiators made on the EMU dossier, especially their failure to understand the importance of EMU as a common goal for the other member states with the possible exception of Denmark for reasons of constitutional and parliamentary politics. His sole focus on Britain's strategy and tactics does not offer him an opportunity to consider either the attitudinal structuring inherent in the EMU bargain or its integrative dimension. Nonetheless, Forster's analysis is sensitive to the fact that all negotiations contain elements of distributive, integrative and intraorganizational bargaining as well as attitudinal structuring.

As Forster explains, the intergovernmental nature of the Treaty on European Union, epitomized by its pillar structure in the eyes of numerous analysts, "should not be exaggerated." Indeed as a complement to the lines traced in the legal dimension by Bruno de Witte, Forster questions the ability of the JHA and CFSP pillars to remain detached from the institutional dynamics of Community decision-making. Significantly, the implementation of the Amsterdam Treaty provides yet another test in this regard. The key point underlined by Forster is that the results of Maastricht allowed the Community to become increasingly embedded in the domestic decision-making of the member states, a process Wolfgang Wessels and Dietrich Rometsch analyze conceptually as "institutional fusion," in terms of "mutual influence and interdependence."

In this context, there is no sequencing in the definition of preferences in the European policy-making of most member states. As Forster explains, although national priorities dominated British thinking on Maastricht, increasingly there is an on-going simultaneous definition of national and European objectives. Here it is necessary to question the degree to which the ever present weight of decisions taken in daily integration influences the negotiators at the table during intergovernmental conference diplomacy, particularly in the more federally-minded member states like the Federal Republic of Germany. In related research beyond the scope of this volume, an analysis of the interactions between the domestic politics of sectoral integration and the domestic politics of a member state's Treaty ratification process, as both are linked to a state's interests defined in IGC diplomacy, may provide clues as to the constraints that shape the "win-set" for participants in future intergovernmental conferences.

The dynamics of changes to the east and south of Europe are bound to exacerbate the distributive dimension of negotiations in the Union as the interests of the members states increasingly diverge. Although coalition politics has a role to play in Council negotiations, the traditional Franco-German alliance is changing in light of EMU's implementation, the challenge of budgetary politics and the prospect of future enlargements. In this volume, Forster at times underestimates the nature and impact of the "privileged partnership" at Maastricht. It is clear, however, that the impetus to integrate provided by historic Franco-German cooperation was noticeably absent throughout the 1996 IGC. The collective impact of the Scandinavian countries, the smaller states, the Presidency and, finally, Blair's Britain came to the fore shaping the results at Amsterdam. This leaves open questions as to the role and influence of larger states in a Union bound to include an increasing number of smaller states in the decades ahead. This is only one of the issues that Forster's book lays the groundwork to analyze. For those concerned about and with the future of integration in Europe, this volume is the most empirically well-researched analysis in print on British conference diplomacy at Maastricht.

This volume is a synthesis of existing knowledge about the flora and fauna of Costa Rica. The major portion of the book consists of detailed accounts of agricultural species, vegetation, amphibians, reptiles, mammals, birds, and insects.

"This is an extraordinary, virtually unique work. . . . The tremendous amount of original, previously unpublished, firsthand information is remarkable."—Peter H. Raven, Director, Missouri Botanical Garden

"An essential resource for anyone interested in tropical biology. . . . It can be used both as an encyclopedia—a source of facts on specific organisms—and as a source of ideas and generalizations about tropical ecology."—Alan P. Smith, Ecology

This book has detailed information about many of the plants and animals one might encounter in Central America. No color pictures, but many black and whites. Book is probably too large and heavy to carry in the field, but is exactly what I was looking for to learn new and obscure facts to impress the non-scientific fellow traveler. I'm very pleased with it.

An amazing reference; everything you need is here, from species accounts to detailed narratives. A perfect reference; my only complaint is that the 800+ pages would have been better as a hardback book - my paperback copy split its spine within a week of purchase and now looks dog-eared and worn!

5 out of 5 stars Immensely useful compendium for the American tropics.......2005-11-30

Janzen's book is over twenty years old but remains an encyclopaedia of tropical America. The 174 authors, all experts in their fields, have penned over 800 fascinating pages. The final product is a milestone, since much of the information presented was previously unpublished.

Introductory chapters cover the history of field biology in Costa Rica, biogeography, climate, geology and soils. The information presented is a thorough background for Costa Rica and provides a wealth of references for those who want to have more detail. These chapters are a useful aid to understanding the biology of any area in the northern Neotropics.

The bulk of the book comprises species accounts grouped systematically with an additional section on agriculture. At the start of each chapter, a well-written introduction gives an overview of the Costa Rican group in question and a taxonomic checklist for the country. However, the meat of the book is the species accounts themselves. Written by a large number of authors, they range from a brief few paragraphs to a couple of pages with two dozen references, depending on the amount of information available. Monochrome photographs illustrate the accounts.

Not surprisingly, Janzen's tome has found its way into universities, research stations and personal libraries throughout the American tropics. For the tropical naturalist who wants to know more than the identity of an animal or plant, this is the book to go for, especially for a trip to Costa Rica. Highly recommended.

There are so many bad books on the market trying to do what this book does so simply and so well. ...few are written with the same authority and attention to detail that Janzen brings to this text. It could be the best money you spend all trip. And I agree with the other reviewers on the book, "Costa Rica the last Country the Gods Made." It's without question a close second to Janzen's masterpiece on the physical world.

With detailed information drawn from hundreds of scientific publications and more than 400 spectacular illustrations, The Natural History of Costa Rican Mammals describes all of Costa Rica?s readily identifiable terrestrial and freshwater mammals.

The clear and entertaining text provides a wealth of information for researchers, students, and naturalist guides, as well as for first-time visitors to the American tropics who simply have an interest in wildlife. The book?s compact, sturdy design makes it easy to carry along on any field trip.

The illustration show not only the mammals themselves, but also their tracks, scats, dens, and anatomical details. Also included are illustrations of numerous other animals and plants with which the mammals have formed close ecological links.

The mammal descriptions include key identification features, range maps, vocalizations, derivations of common and scientific names, evolutionary history, local folklore and mythology, and extensive information about natural history and conservation. The book also describes some of the fascinating challenges faced by researchers and points out numerous questions that remain unanswered. By presenting mammals in a broader context, The Natural History of Costa Rican Mammals provides and entry point into a general study of tropical ecology and conservation.

By far the best guide I've seen for tropical mammals. It includes all information necessary in ID a mammal and understand the ecology of the organism. I met Mark Wainwright and he certainly knows what he's doing. I'm hoping he writes and illustrates a similar book on Costa Rican amphibians.

This book is far more than a review of information about mammals in Costa Rica; it is also a good field guide and a useful text on applied conservation. The author is a professional guide in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve and as such is knowledgeable about a wide variety of natural history subjects. This book is primarily a review of the literature about mammals in not only Costa Rica, but elsewhere in Central America. It contains information widely applicable to other counties and the suggestions for conservation apply just as widely.

I have a pretty good library on wildlife in Central and South America and this beautifully done book is probably the best, not only about a specific group, but also about general issues. The drawings are excellent, the overall book is well put together and, the writing is clear, simple, accurate, and really first-rate. Buy this book even if you don't plan on traveling to Costa Rica.

A marvellous book, compact enough to be a field guide and yet informative enough to be a valuable reference work at home. As a field guide it is particularly valuable for its superb illustrations and also in showing and discussing things like scats, tracks, dens and sounds for those animals that one would like to see but might not! We'll certainly take it along again on our next trip. As a reference work it is excellent as a clearly and entertainingly written introduction to the natural history and conservation of Costa Rica's many fascinating mammals. It also has a comprehensive list of references to the primary scientific literature.

Most field guides provide very little information other than the features of the animal relevant to identifying it. Wainwright's book, however, contains loads of fascinating natural history information, written in an engaging, sometimes clever but never cute style.

This book is handy for those who want to identify Costa Rican mammals, but it is especially appropriate for anyone who wishes to go beyond the simple question of "What's that?" It contains a wealth of natural history information on mammals' feeding, defecating, and sexual behavior. The author also describes ecological interactions and conservation issues. Hundreds of superb illustrations depict portraits of the animals as well as behaviors, food plants, and interesting details such as scats and penis bones. While the book focuses on species within Costa Rica, much of the information applies to mammals in Central America in general. The Natural History of Costa Rican Mammals serves as a fine reference book and a fun-to-read book at the same time.
