                    Book Description

According to his wife, U. S. Representative David E. Bonior is a contemplative man who has had some pretty "harebrained" ideas. It was just such an idea that led Bonior and his wife Judy to walk the 325 miles from their home in Mount Clemens--a suburb of Detroit--to the quaint coastal sidewalks of Mackinaw City, the Lower Peninsula's northernmost point. Walking to Mackinac chronicles the Boniors' three-week journey to connect with the people and the history of their home state, to explore Michigan at human pace, and to appreciate it more fully.
The Boniors plotted their own course, stringing together trails, back roads, and abandoned railway beds. They both carried twenty-five to thirty-five pounds on their backs, so they limited each day's effort to a walkable distance that would end at a campsite or motel. Both in their early fifties, neither of the Boniors had ever undertaken a trek of this magnitude or done any camping to speak of. Their daily challenges were humorous, daunting, and even frightening.
While the book focuses on the Boniors' journey, what moves the narrative forward is the story of Michigan. The journey serves to link the Underground Railroad and waterways, the fur trade and the lumber industry, agriculture and the automobile, and of course the people all along the way.
If you have ever taken a trip on a whim, or if you have even just thought about ignoring the "sensible" voice inside your head, Walking to Mackinac is sure to delight you. Both entertaining and informative, the Boniors' story reminds us once again that even the longest journey begins with a single step.
David E. Bonior is the Democratic Whip in the U. S. House of Representatives. He represents Michigan's Tenth Congressional District and lives in Mount Clemens, Michigan, with his wife Judy.

5 out of 5 stars journey with the Boniors across Michigan.......2004-02-09

I picked up this book with eager curiosity having traveled to upper Michigan and the U.P. with my family many times. I would usually come across Bonior's book in the Michigan outdoor sections of bookstores, and finally had the opportunity to read it when I discovered it again at my local library. Reading Bonior's book this winter made me yearn for a summer camping trip with my family once again.

David and Judy Bonior weave together a tale of hiking, exploration, learning and love of the outdoors. Being a native from Michigan, I was delighted to read the interesting trivia, tidbits and facts about many of the places we have toured in my home state. I look forward to redsicovering many of those places Bonior writes of with my family when we venture "up north" again.

Bonior's love for the people of Michigan, love of his home State, and his love for the great outdoors shines through each page turned. You learn something of Bonior's character and integrity --as well as the strength of support that he has in his wife Judy, who traveled with him on this journey. I recommend this book to anyone seeking to discover Michigan, learn Michigan's rich history, and meet some of the great people past and present that make Michigan that great state that it is.

I wonder if the Boniors will ever attempt this walk again and/or encourage others to travel with them across the State...The book is truly an inspiration to those that love hiking, camping and the gift of nature as well as to those who have a fondness for Michigan.

                    4 out of 5 stars Excellent...Almost........2007-09-18

This book is really geared toward MMA sport fighters, and my only complaint is that the self-defense section was a bit lacking compared to the boxing stuff, as well as I would have liked to see some diversity with hand strikes, for example palm strikes, finger jabs and such. However, great section on combinations in the back that made up for anything that was slightly off with the rest. Lots of ideas you can put to work in your training.

This is all the book you will ever need for striking. It covers everything from basics punches, to edvanced combos. If you want to know how to fight on the street then get this book and a jiu-jitsu book. Practice these moves on a heavybag, get about a thousand reps on each technique and your on your way. I've used most of these in real life and they are good stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for a beginner.......2006-03-25

I have absolutely no background in hitting since my background is judo/soft martial arts. I ordered this book out of curiosity to see what is involved in what I consider hard martial arts and I was delighted. Hatmaker seems at his best in this area -- I suspect he may be a boxer at heart. While he also has a wrestling and grappling background, I find myself questioning some of his approaches in those areas. I think he is more comfortable in this area and really seems to delight in the subject. I also feel that his basic philosophy works better here.
A philosophy of sudden hit and follow up -- than it does in other grappling areas. He is able to show a great number of strikes and combinations -- for the purist -- even the proper way to strike the groin with a low blow when your opponent may be wearing a cup. Keep in mind, I lack striking experience and was looking for a good over all coverage of the subject and was delighted for that reason. You might want to see if any boxer/striker types reviewed the book and get their perspective.

4 out of 5 stars Good bang for the buck.......2006-02-15

                    Pros --
There is good information and lots of pictures.
                    The book is very inexpensive.
The approach Hatmaker takes is fundamentally sound -- he is looking for what really works in real situations.

                    Cons --
Advanced strikers will find little new to them.
The pictures are grainy. In most cases, this is just an aesthetic consideration, but in some it makes it harder to discern what he is trying to show.
There are a few errors in the text (but if you look at the pictures and think it through you will figure them out, and there are not many.)
The text is not always well-correlated with the pictures. That is, as you read along, you can't always tell which part of the information is being shown by a given picture. I think the book would be much more user friendly if the text included picture numbers for reference.

Unless you are already well-versed in this area, worth more than the low price.

Alas, this is where Lisa and her uncle part ways--accidentally. Luckily, our earnest heroine is also pretty street smart. After asking a police officer for help, she's trying to get the attention of the woman at the information desk, when she hears an announcement: "Little Lisa, your uncle is waiting for you on the 64th floor." Saved!

If you're as much a fan of Anne Gutman and Georg Hallensleben's collaborative efforts as we are--or even if you've never met Lisa or Gaspard (Gaspard on Vacation), you'll be utterly charmed by Lisa in New York. Hallensleben's thick, smeary brush strokes are endlessly appealing, whether depicting the "funny-looking Flatiron Building" or a raring-to-go Lisa gazing out the window of her hip uncle's high-rise (he seems to have some Andy Warhol paintings on his wall!) (Ages 3 and older) --Emilie Coulter

                      Book Description

Lisa visits her favorite uncle in New York City and sees the Statue of Liberty, the Brooklyn Bridge, and Central Park. When she gets lost in Times Square while shopping for souvenirs, she is saved by her own cleverness—and a Statue of Liberty night-light.

When I was a child we use to go to visit my dad in NY. Us kids loved Times Square...the tacky souvenirs and dollar store. This book reminds me of those great memories. The illustrator is wonderful...I love all his books.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book for Kids.......2005-11-06

This is a great book for kids with beautiful imagery of New York. It also tells an important story of paying attention to one's surroundings. I would reccommend for kids of all ages.

5 out of 5 stars FUN FOR NYC VISITORS.......2005-07-27

Charming, sweet, funny, and NYC is the backdrop! I'm surprised I'm the first to review this picturebook. I've often given it and/or My New York to young kids who visit me in the Manhattan. When we have older visitors (age 8 to 13), I give them a novel that I wrote, Melanie in Manhattan, which is the diary of a funny New York City eleven-year-old who becomes a tour guide in her own town. Come to NYC--and get your kids hooked on books! (...)

                            Book Description

We are how we shop. From Mesopotamian merchants and the fairs of medieval Europe to marble palace department stores and now Wal-Mart and the Internet, social, cultural, economic, and moral forces have shaped our shopping. In this engaging and generously illustrated book, Ann Satterthwaite traces the history of shopping and considers its meaning and significance. According to Satterthwaite, shopping has become part of the American dream. To choose and to buy constitute not only a basic economic liberty but also the capacity to improve and transform ourselves. How we shop also reflects our culture, as in the twentieth century disposable incomes have grown, women's roles have changed, and new styles of shopping and advertising have made their impacts on an old adventure. But there is a downside. Shopping used to be a friendly business: shoppers and clerks knew each other, the country crossroads stores and downtown markets were social as much as economic hubs. Shopping was meshed with civic life--post offices, town halls, courts, and churches. In place of this almost vanished scene have come superstores and the franchises of international companies staffed by pressured clerks in featureless commercial wastelands. Shopping and community have been savagely divorced. However, shopping as a social plus need not be lost, says Satterthwaite. Examining trends in the United States and abroad where new approaches to an old activity are strengthening its social and civic role, she states that shopping is more than ever a public concern with profound public impacts.

5 out of 5 stars Shopping and the Public.......2002-01-17

This is a very well- written, extremely informative and thoughtful book useful to planners and anyone interested in understanding and influencing the way in which places to shop are developed. The breadth of the book, which includes a survey of shopping through the hstory as well as an examination of modern shopping via the interent, puts the act of shopping into context by exploring the relationship between community and shopping. Is it possible for the public and local government to mold and shape where and how shopping occurs without drastically impeding the ability of retailers and other providers to sell their products? Is the modern way of shopping destructive to the structure of community? These are questions that planners and communities must address. Reading this book will place the elements of the debate into perspective.

                                        Description:
This paper analyzes the effects of pegged and floating exchange rates using a two-country dynamic general equilibrium model that is calibrated to the US and a European aggregate. The model assumes shocks to money, productivity and the interest rate parity condition. It captures the fact that the sharp increase in nominal exchange rate volatility after the end of the Bretton Woods (BW) system was accompanied by a commensurate rise in real exchange rate volatility, but had no pronounced effect on the volatility of GDP. This holds irrespective of whether flexible or sticky prices are assumed-which casts doubt on the widespread view that the roughly equal (post-BW) rise in nominal and real exchange rate volatility reflects price stickiness. A flex-prices variant of the model captures better the fact that the correlation between US and European GDP has been higher in the post-BW era than under BW.

                                          Description:
Guided by psychological evidence, we develop a behavioral exchange rate model in which investors' perception of fundamental shocks switches between two states. According to the representativeness heuristic, agents underestimate the informational content of news in calm periods, whereas they overreact to news if they encounter a series of distinct exchange rate changes. Simulations indicate that the model mimics the behavior of actual exchange rates quite well. For instance, we observe fat tails for the distribution of the returns and volatility clustering.

                                            Book Description

The origins of Japan's 'miraculous' economic growth in the 1960s has been a topic that continues to interest academic inquiry. The initial focus upon international factors has been supplemented by greater emphasis on the role played by the United States and the western allies in promoting Japan's economic welfare. This book provides the British perspective on Japan's post-war economic recovery. It refutes the accepted view that Britain's policy towards Japan was driven by fears that the latter's economic recovery through greater trade relations with Southeast Asia would encroach upon Britian's sphere of influence. Through a close examination of Britian's sterling and trade policies towards Japan, the book illustrates the complex, often contradictory, yet daring British vision of Asia as a whole in the immediate post-war world.

This is a great introduction to wetlands ecosystems! This book begins with an introduction to what a wetland ecosystem is and how it works, giving examples of wetlands in various parts of the US. Each type of wetland ecosystem is presented with a list of plants and fungi found there described in moderate detail, including their niche in the ecosystem. Plants and fungi that may have special interest to the reader are examined in more detail at the end of this section. This book also covers the year-round changes in this ecosystem, tips on observation, specimen collection, and on keeping a nature journal. A section at the end of the book offers various activities and investigations that the reader may find interesting and helpful in understanding more about this threatened ecosystem.

This book would be a great read for anyone who is interested in nature, wetlands, or being a naturalist. It is not so detailed that beginners would be overwhelmed and not so simplistic that a moderately experienced naturalist would find it too light. I checked it out of the library but immediately ordered my own copy! I especially recommend this title to anyone who is interested in nature journals or just plain learning more about the world around them.
