Many candidates mistakenly think that if they only get the interview their personality and speaking skills will seal the deal. As a result, they do not practice or put their best foot forward. The book is a great tool for the experienced executive, inside candidate or new graduate - everyone benefits from evaluating their unique fit for a postion using the structure and advice set forth by Drake. There is nothing like taping yourself answering the 10 most common questions to appreciate your opportunity to clarify your value proposition.

I have used this book personally and given it to my friends and colleagues - who have used it. I know of no one who has used this book and not been offered the job.

4 out of 5 stars very good interview prep.......2001-11-01

I would highly recommend this book for job interviewing preparation. Also recommended for job interview preparation are the job interview guides published by Vault.com, including the Vault Guide to the Case Interview and the Vault Guide to Finance Interviews. Good luck!

5 out of 5 stars Some real help!.......2000-07-17

The perfect interview was exactly the book I needed. It showed me how to present my personality qualitities and job experience in a way that makes a positive impact. During my recent interview (after reading the book) I felt relaxed and confident because knew what I was going to say and how to say it. And, best of all: I got the job!

    5 out of 5 stars Great self-learning tool!.......2000-07-17

The Perfect Interview is the interviewing book I recommend to all my outplacement clients. It clearly explains what applicants must do to make the most positive interview impact. In addition, the book provides practical exercices for developing skills to optimally respond to the interviewer's questions.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Interview Preparation Guide.......2000-02-24

This book is only 200 pages and can be read in a day or two. It is well organized. The first section is how to locate that perfect job and land an interview. Drake makes suggestions for networking, employment agencies, and executive search firms, with examples of contact letters and other great materials. He then takes you into the interview prep phase. He starts with helping you look right - professional, prepared, and confident. The next sections take you through the interview process, and he goes through the 10 "standard questions" asked by interviewers. "Tell me about yourself" "What are you strengths/weaknesses" and so forth. I throughly enjoyed how he assists you in forumlating the proper responses so they are professional and you feel confident. He then assists you in follow-ups, and the much desired negotiation phase. Drake helps you to be prepared from start to finish with this book. You MUST go through his skill builders as these are key to being prepared, confident, and winning that perfect job. I strongly recommend this book to all in the job market, whether it be administrative, technical, or other. I won my first interview and got the job I had dreamed of. The others did not answer as confidently as I did, nor did they state thier answers in a professional and knowledgeable manner. I owe my new job to this book. Be prepared, be professional, and be confident. Read this book, do the skill builders on paper and go over them. This is one book that will help you land that perfect career. Good luck!

5 out of 5 stars An Invigorating Intellectual History.......2006-09-16

This book was a revelation. I was simply enthralled by Joel Hagen's brilliance in reviewing the emergence of the discipline of ecosystem ecology (the study of biotic-abiotic interaction and nutrient flows in ecological systems). He does a magnificent job of introducing the personalities that midwived the new science. He explains their intellectual struggles, philosophical cross-currents, and different academic milieux. He also expertly illuminates sociopolitical context. Through his in-depth research he is able to dispel some misconceptions and truismsm, arriving at the heart of what made each scientist tick. Even when exploring some of the arcane figures and dead-end developments, he is so compelling that they become integral to the story, not sidetracks.

His breadth of knowledge, his discerning inclusiveness, his clarity of thought, all make _An Entangled Bank_ a stimulating read. Very often in science courses we are presented only with the canonical "state of the science," having to swallow its agglomerated whole free of context. Hagen reveals the wisdom of understanding intellectual foundations. Through study of the origins and development of a science, we may better grasp the received tenets of current scientific understanding. As a young science, ecosystem ecology has a historical context that is relatively accessible to us, if less romantic than a tale of the origins of astronomy might be.

A peek into the labs and offices of botanists, limnologists, and biogeochemists might not seem like the acme of excitement. Hagen inspires us with his insights. He makes his subject meaningful to us. Though it is not pleasure reading by any stretch, its clear-sighted intellectual vigor makes _An Entangled Bank_ pure enjoyment.

This colorful book celebrating fifty years of America's most prominent sports magazine is certainly more practical than hoarding 2,500 issues. The six-part book plays to the strength of the magazine: "The Stories" and "The Photographs" sections are the largest. The 35 articles are truncated, often just whetting your appetite for more. The companion book Fifty Years of Great Writing offers many of these in their full glory. On the other hand, the pictures are often bigger than they were in the magazine (or could ever have been with the smaller size). Lose minutes staring at Michael Jordan or Walter Payton frozen in midair. Examine the juxtaposition of a close play at the plate with the bizarre styles of a 60s women's track team. Try not to be swept away at a shot of Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain defining basketball. If you have picked up the special issues released during SI's anniversary year, you already seen a decent portion of this book. The notable new writing is Richard Hoffer's essay about the world (both sports and at large) when the magazine began in 1954 and senior editor Frank Deford's pitch-perfect introduction about why the magazine is special and how it grew up in the age of television. The section most folks will spend their coffee table moments is "The Covers," a listing of the entire magazine's cover images, both in chronological order and grouped in similar topics (Scandals, Presidents, Deja Vu). Punctuated by the best sport quotes, SI's "Signs of the Apocalypse," fascinating lists of athletes and teams that were on the cover the most times, and other sport tidbits through the ages, this area is sure to launch a thousand sport memories. Yes, all the swimsuit covers are in one place, too. One quibble: why is their "Sports Person of the Year" in the book not the same as their well-known "Sportsman of the Year?" --Doug Thomas

              3 out of 5 stars Sports Nostalgia.......2007-05-15

Good coffee table book for the sports afficionado, especially the older one who likes to quietly "remember when". Careful when ordering from an Amazon partner. I got it on the cheap but it obviously had been stored in a damp environment as the pages were "rippled". Since it's not an heirloom or collectible I didn't go through the trouble of contesting it. Maybe the seller will get a hockey puck in the face or a bookcase will fall on him.

5 out of 5 stars Must Have Book!.......2006-03-01

I'm on Amazon to purchase this book as agreed with my 5th grade son who checked this out of the school library in September and has never returned it. After renewing for months (it's now March!) I agreed to purchase it if he would only return it for another child to enjoy!

It is a beautiful book w/ lots of treasures particularly for the almanac-type sports fans. And besides his football book, it's one of his top 3 books!

5 out of 5 stars Worth Its Weight.......2005-06-17

This is a glorious celebration of Sports Illustrated's 50 years coverage of the minor and the major in sport. At first, the magazine devoted a disproportionate number of articles to "gentlemenly" pursuits such as troutfishing and yachting. However, the once timid magazine eventually hit its stride, with the help of television, with the talents of new editors and writers, and, arguably, by the visuals of television.

The book, with an informative but slightly cloying introduction by Frank Deford (he keeps on mentioning the swimsuit issue--about as relevant to the major sports scene as yachting was 50 years ago), organizes the magazine's stories and pictures by the decade. A current sportswriter gives an overview, there arearticles from the magazines, sidebar-like features such as quotes, historic cultural and historical events, and, most importantly, the photographs.

SI photography is the best of its kind, setting a standard that will defy any attempt to cater to some notion of the "new" SI reader. It is as dependable and as beautiful as a museum. The full page and two-page spreads here are magnificent records of sports history, character studies, stories of emotion, action, the literal and the figurative. A low angle shot of the then-named Lew ALcindor beating Houston in 1968. an underwater shot of Michael Phelps winning gold at the Australia Olympics, a black and white of Duke Snider climbng the outer field wall at Ebbets Field, an extreme overhead of Ali knocking out Cleveland Williams in 1966, mini-reproductions of cover of every issue, and yes, that includes the swimsuit issues--it's here at an overwhelmingly fan-friendly price.

In a way, then, the book is a direct descendant of the unique magazine of which one British man complained in 1954: "For 25 cents there is too much value." Although the book was produced bt SI and--as expected--celebrates SI, it also teases itself as well, noting that in 1954, "it published only six articles on basketball but 14 on bowling. It published 17 articles on clothing (but oddly, none on bowling clothing)." My only complaints: There's not quite enough of the original text (more of the writing is included in a companion book) and there is no index. A superb gift with more substance and memories than the usual oversized book.

              5 out of 5 stars What a Gift!.......2005-01-07

This coffee table sports offering has no weak spots. Cover-to-cover...SOLID. I found it to be the perfect business gift for the sports enthusiast. I am not a shill for SI or Amazon but,it's also very efficient. This is my 5th order.

              5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2004-12-26

What a treasure! I got this coffee-table for my nephews (15 and 13) and my own son (13) for Christmas, and all gift-unwrapping immediately halted while they looked through the book. "Wow!" "Oh man, look at that!" etc. while they looked at the incredible collection of stunning sports photos from the past 50 years. Every SI cover is included, too, as well as selections from the best articles, and humorous quotes, even sports art. Everyone of every age picked this book up at some point on Christmas Day, sometimes in groups of 3 or more, all looking at the amazing pictures. The older people wanted to check to see if their favorites were included - and how DID Michael Jordan jump that high!? Look at OJ Simpson back when he won the Heisman trophy. And hockey players didn't wear helmets - not even the goalie?? - in the 1960's? Fantastic book.

                Book Description

With its Parisian boulevards, faded art-nouveau palaces, hidden courtyards and illuminated bridges, Budapest is one of the world's great romantic cities. Bestriding the Danube, the city presents two very contrasting faces - Buda on one side of the water and Pest on the other. Explore the caves and Roman ruins of Buda, board a cog-wheel railway into its leafy hills, take a stroll through the cobbled streets of the Castle District or a soak in a thermal spa. Alternatively, seek out the vibrant shops and restaurants of Pest, admire the Westminster-inspired Parliament building, go boating in City Park, or spend an evening at the opera. History and culture are covered in detail, as is the practical information needed for a fulfilling and trouble-free trip.

                This guide features:

                4 out of 5 stars Mini-encyclopedia.......2007-09-17

Think of it as a miniature encyclopedia to all things Hungarian. This is not the guidebook I would take with me, but has excellent background on the history, detailed reviews on the baths (and what is a visit to Budapest without baths) and restaurant reviews which will probably be out of date by now.
I purchased one for a trip in 2006 and found it to be a wealth of background information, but for the hard hitting on the ground stuff try something else. If you stick to the castle district in Budapest then it's all pretty self-explanatory and in English. If you venture off into real Budapest you'll need a little personal advice, like where the metro shuts down for repairs and what is the Hungarian equivalent to the English names on your map. So I recommend talking to people at your hostel or hotel.
That said, I'd recommend this book, not as "go here and see this" guide but to be used for some context on an unusual city and in that regard it will not soon be out of date.

                Book Description

When the battle to protect the ancient trees heats up, sides are chosen and lines are crossed. When difficulties disrupt plans, some people are willing to do just about anything to prove their points, even if exploiting the legendary Bigfoot compromises their beliefs and ideals.

Indicator species like the spotted owl and the marbled murrelet have proven to be an exceptional tool in regulating timber harvest along California's North Coast. But for an elite group of environmental activists, it just wasn't enough.

While a group of Bigfoot researchers probe the wilderness to prove the creature existence, others use the legend to protect thousands of privately owned forests'. Backed by media attention and public support, things run smoothly until something goes terribly wrong. The outcome takes the issues into the wilderness, one of the largest remaining continuous groves of ancient trees, and into a place where neither party ever expected to go.

                  Book Description

In Shopping with Freud, the author asks: what do we mean when we say `consumer'? Tracking the complexity of the question through literature and psychology texts: Lolita, The Picture of Dorian Gray, Lady Chatterley's Lover, and Freud's work on the Anna O. case, the book examines the surprising manifestations of the consumer subject in these works. Whether the helpless, female victim of advertising deliberately frought with psychological undercurrents to motivate buying, or the rational, male agent demanding his rights to goods and services, the meanings and appearances of the consumer are discussed and dissected, as well as the "two-way street" of influence between psychology and consumer culture.

Bowlby shows how ideas about consumption are brought to bear on questions of choice in areas seemingly far removed from shopping, and how assumptions and arguments about the psychology of consumers throw light on questions of human subjectivity. Shoppingwith Freud will be of great interest to readers in cultural studies, sociology, literature, psychology, business studies and women's studies.

First published in 1960 and closely followed by a hit movie of the same name, Joy Adamson's now classic memoir Born Free continues to introduce countless young people to the wildlife of Africa. Adamson recounts her adventures as the surrogate mother of an orphaned lion cub named Elsa (with parenting duties shared by her husband George and by a delightfully imperturbable rock hyrax named Pati), whom she raised as a welcome member of her human and animal family while painstakingly teaching Elsa the skills she would need to survive in the wild. Her teaching, against all odds, was effective: three years later, the Adamsons took Elsa to a place near that of her birth and set her loose, hoping that she would find her "real pride" among other lions of the Kenya grasslands--as she soon did.

Long targeted to preteen readers, Born Free is in fact a sophisticated work of environmental consciousness-raising, for Joy Adamson believed that any relationship between humans and wild animals had to be conditioned by an attitude "of absolute equality quite different from that between a dog and his master." Although Elsa's story had an ultimately tragic ending--the young lioness died of disease and, in separate incidents, Joy and George Adamson were both murdered--Joy Adamson's book continues to instruct and entertain readers of all ages. --Gregory McNamee

                        Book Description

There have been many accounts of the return to the wild of tame animals, but since its original publication in 1960, when the New York Times hailed it as a "fascinating and remarkable book," Born Free has stood alone in its power to move us.

Joy Adamson's story of a lion cub in transition between the captivity in which she is raised and the fearsome wild to which she is returned captures the abilities of both humans and animals to cross the seemingly unbridgeable gap between their radically different worlds. Especially now, at a time when the sanctity of the wild and its inhabitants is increasingly threatened by human development and natural disaster, Adamson's remarkable tale is an idyll, and a model, to return to again and again.

Illustrated with the same beautiful, evocative photographs that first enchanted the world forty years ago and updated with a new introduction by George Page, former host and executive editor of the PBS series Nature and author of Inside the Animal Mind, this anniversary edition introduces to a new generation one of the most heartwarming associations between man and animal.

When Elsa's natural instincts soften, reality becomes harder and harder to face.
After a young lioness has been raised and transformed from fierce predator to loving house
cat by her owner Joy, the thought of releasing Elsa into the wild seems to be the greatest
challenge the two have had to face.
Born Free is a true story about a woman ,Joy, and a lioness ,Elsa. Joy's husband
was a game warden in Africa, so the two went on many safaris together. During one of these
safaris, they find three orphaned lion cubs and decide to raise and take care of them during
their cub life. The day finally arrives when the cubs are to be shipped to a European zoo,
and Joy just cannot part with the smallest cub, Elsa. Elsa stays with the two of them and
becomes part of the family for many months. Between all of the fun and
suspense, the truth of the matter finally reveals itself. Elsa, though removed of all the natural
instincts she needs to survive, must soon be permanently released into the wild.
Filled with laughter and excitement, Born Free is a terrific bittersweet adventure,
giving people the ability to learn about a miraculous breakthrough in human and animal
interaction. This book is a timeless classic that you can read again

5 out of 5 stars THE CLASSIC TRUE LIFE ADVENTURE.......2006-05-04

Animals have always been a favorite topic of mine, but as a young person who just happened to find a copy of this book some 39 years ago, with the cover torn off, I consider it one of the great discoveries of my life. It was summertime, and I was headed to the 7th grade. I wasn't much of a reader until that momentous day. The story of Elsa and the Adamsons totally transported me to another place, and many wondrous adventures in Africa. Due much to this book, I now am a voracious reader. The story is heartwarming, and is the reason I insisted my 7th grade son read it for his current book report.

Whether you're 9 or 99, Elsa's antics and her loving bond with Joy and George will capture your heart. I guarantee it. And with Africa's Lion population dwindling to probably less than 30,000 today, I can't think of a more timely book, in honour of conserving their remaining habitat. Especially when one considers that Africa had over 100,000 Lions when I first read it.

                        5 out of 5 stars Born Free.......2005-04-25

This book touched my heart, to actually realize how one woman could bome so close to animals that we look at and call beasts. The compassion that one woman had is enough to change they way you may think about how we live. And once you read this book, dont forget that it is a true story. After seeing what Joyce had done wither her love for animals, any dream can come true.

This book is one of my favorites. This book tells you the story of a bond between a hunan and a lioness. This is a great book because it shows you a different side of wild animals and the way they live. When you read it, you will get the excitement as if you are along on the safari with them!

5 out of 5 stars A Powerful, Moving Story of Elsa.......2003-06-27

My first introduction to the Born Free books when I was a child learning to read in school. And what a great introduction to reading it was. The story of Elsa and the Adamsons who saved her life as a cub along with her sisters and raised her brought me into a world of wanting to be there with all the animals and see Africa. This seemed to be treated more as a children's book in my time than an adult book. The idea of the book was to teach people the importance of environmental conservation awareness. The first book, tells Elsa's early life from a cub raised by Joy and George Adamson and their pet rock hyrax, Pati. Joy is Elsa's surrogate mom and with great pains to teach Elsa the skills to survive in the wild. With lots of work Joy did it with success that Elsa was capable of living in the wild again. They released her near her birthplace and hoping Elsa would find and connect with her pride-in which she did. There is the tragedy not long afterward I had read this amazing story that Elsa had died in the Kenya bush of disease. Something of life that I learned early in my life that it was reality in the wilds of Africa or anywhere for that matter. But the cycle of life lives on in Elsa's pride. Still another grim incident ended the lives of Joy and George Adamson. Both were found murdered.

Joy Adamson has left behind a legacy of these fascinating books that moves us to treat our world with respect and have a better understanding between human-animal relationship. Joy Adamson before her death had also written, 'Living Free: Elsa and her Cubs' and 'Forever Free: Elsa's Pride.' Her family extended even further across the grasslands of Africa as she tells about them in her other books, 'The Spotted Sphinx' (about Pippa the Cheetah), 'Pippa's Challenge,' 'Pippa: The Cheetah and her Cubs,' 'Queen of Shaba: The Story of an African Leopard,' and 'Friends of the Forest.' Joy Adamson's book 'Peoples of Kenya' reflects upon the life of the Kenyan people, her concern for the people welfare there and their struggles to make an existence in a harsh, beautiful land. If you want to know more about Joy Adamson read her autobiography, 'The Searching Spirit.'
