Customer Reviews:
A good book for those interested in the future of our planet.......2001-03-14
The author has good communication skills as well as lots of experience in agriculture-- a somewhat rare combination. The book deals with an extremely important topic: the impact of agriculture on planet Earth. (Let's face it. You just can't feed 6 billion people without having a big impact). Besides being important, the book is also well organized, well illustrated and interesting to read.

Book Description
This proceedings volume includes the most recent research advances in the application of RF power in plasmas, mainly in fusion science. Most papers deal with plasma heating and current drive, profile control, and stabilization using RF techniques, with some on RF sources and launchers. New and exciting results from all major tokamak experiments, and from theory and modeling are included. There is also a paper on RFplasma application in space propulsion by an active NASA astronaut. This book is a valuable reference for the RF researchers in fusion and other disciplines.

I think this has to be one of the most comprehensive guides to caring for one's cat I have ever seen: it covers nutrition, aging, correcting unwanted behaviors, medical needs, and communication with your cat, among many other subjects. As a person who has lived with cats most of my life, there were eye-opening bits of information I never knew before. Overall, it is a well thought out, comprehensive book. My one teeny-tiny gripe is not about the content of the book or the information, but rather the fact that like a lot of other cat books and literature, it refers to a cat as "she" almost exclusively. As a person who has lived with male cats and female cats and is an animal lover in general, I wonder: can't we just use the word "it"? Very good book anyway ...

Managing Director.......2000-05-29
If people psycologists could do as good a job with people as Pam Johnson-Bennett does with cats, we would have a saner and more mentally healthy society. As a pet sitter for the past 12 years, we heartily endorse Pam Johnson-Bennett's books on cats.
great health info, well written, sensible.......1999-09-15
I found great information for my cat's diet and health, plus first aid & psychology. I gave this book as gifts to several of my friends, and they like it a lot, too. The "Vitality Mix" recipe has helped my cat immensely.

Customer Reviews:
So-so.......2007-09-10
Good basics but probably more for the new long-distance cyclist. I felt it a bit redundant and perhaps 1/2 of the book was actually helpful to read. Written in an easy-to-read fashion.
Very slim on content.......2007-08-02
I am a subscriber to Bicycling magazine. Every month I eagerly open the latest issue and almost without exception am disappointed in the lack of substantial content. Most articles are superficial at best, stating obvious facts and making suggestions of questionable value. If you have had a similar experience with the Bicycling the magazine then you already know what you will find in this book.
There is surprising little useful content here. Equipment tips and suggestions are generally useless. For instance much attention is given to the benefit of clipless pedals. Well duh!!! Important topics for long distance cycling such as working out a comfortable saddle system are given almost no useful coverage (usually something like "get a saddle which is comfortable"). Most of the chapters as they relate to equipment are quite dated and need to be revised.
Topics such as Lactic Threshold, heart rate monitoring, and training strategies are introduced but unless they are completely new to you the discussions of each are not likely to be useful.
I generally could not bring myself to completely read any of the suggestions and skimmed through most of the book. I did find a couple of pieces worth reading but to be honest I can not recall them at the moment.
My advice is to skip this book. Anything of value that could be found in it could also be easily found on any of a number of websites devoted to cycling and training. For an excellent alternative book covering a lot of useful training discussion see "Cycling Past 50" by Joel Friel. Despite the title, riders of all ages will find wonderful discussions of training physiology and strategies which will apply well to your long distance goals.
Now if someone would just would make a cycling magazine that is worth reading so I can relegate "Bicycling" to the bathroom stall with Mens Health and Outside..........
Good but not systematic.......2007-05-13
I was a bit disappointed with this book. The title implies that the authors present a systematic way of building skill and endurance for long distance cycling. Instead, it is more of a collection of tips. The content is still worthwhile.
Calling All Cyclists.......2007-04-09
Cyclists of all levels should check out these training tips. Even those not doing long distance can find a lot of useful information.
Love it!!.......2007-03-16
I absolutely think this book is terrific. You must read every word. It has much useable info on some very important subjects such as nutrition, prep, etc. Even if you are not doing long distance, this book is a must!!!!

Book Description
Completely revised and updated guide to Québec's two distinctly different cities
Montréal and Québec City are vibrant cultural centres, pre-eminent destinations for Canadians, Americans and Europeans alike. This new Colourguide offers updated coverage and new images of museums, galleries, heritage sites, parks and gardens.
Written entirely by local residents, this book gives readers the benefit of inside knowledge on accommodations, events, places to eat, places to shop, and places to relax. Montreal Mirror Arts Editor Matthew Woodley explores the art galleries, from the grand to the underground. Actor and film maker Paul Spence covers nightlife both on and off the beaten track, including the gay scene, as well as late-night snack spots. Sarah Musgrave, casual dining critic for the Montreal Gazette, gets to the heart of Montréal's ever-evolving Main, examining the culture, cuisine, entertainment, and shopping.
This edition features expanded coverage of Québec City. The dining section focuses on award-winning chefs who use the region's finest produce to create a distinct cuisine. The convergence of historical buildings and the modern city in Upper and Lower Towns is highlighted by local experts.
This edition is fully updated with a listings section that provides website information for travellers who like to plan on the web. Maps and colour photography illustrate an entertaining and informative text.
Customer Reviews:
montreal and quebec city colourguide.......2006-11-06
Very informative, I am from this area and loved the book.
Good overview.......2006-10-01
I thought this book was quite appropriate for my travel to Montreal and Quebec City. It describes in sections of what to see and do at Montreal and Quebec City. It also gives the reader information on some of the excursions one can undertake while in these areas. However, this book is best used in conjunction with a detailed map as it doesn't not tell the read how to get to the places it describes (e.x. while Montmorency and Orleans are indeed 5 minutes East of Quebec City, it doesn't tell you how to get there). Overall, if you are only staying in each city for 1-2 days though, this is a great book.
Doesn't have good maps.......2006-06-05
This book is colorful which is good. However, I am surprised by the fact that it doesn't provide good maps. It has brief regional maps and some area maps. However, I couldn't find most routes and attractions in the maps. Those routes are mentioned in its introduction of area attractions. The other surprising fact is that it doesn't have a subway map.
Lots of information poorly organized, leave it at home when you travel.......2005-08-04
This travel guide is organized as follows:
1/ The first few pages are simple maps but they won't be of much help if you actually try to use them to navigate Montreal/Quebec.
2/ 100+ pages of text with full-color pictures detailing what to see or do in Montreal/Quebec, a section is dedicated to each city and sub-sections for areas of interest in each city, like the old port area in Montreal.
3/ the book calls it the "Listings" section, it has travel tips, lists of hotels, restaurants, places to shop, etc. (b&w, no pictures, each page divided into 2 columns, looks kind of like phone book listings)
This tour guide does an excellent job of including almost every spot that a tourist might be interested in, accompanied by colorful photos, the problem is a reader often have to scan through whole paragraphs of text to find specific information he/she is looking for. For example, when scanning through the guide a photo of a restaurant caught my eye and I would like to find information about that restaurant, often I would have to scan through the whole paragraph to find the line describing the restaurant, and when I need the address/contact information I'll have to flip to the listing section. Another problem is without a map a street address is not very useful.
If you allow yourself plenty of time to prepare for the trip you might as well get this book, read through it to determine what places you want to visit/restaurants you want to dine in; and then do the preparation work to find out the opening hours/contact information/address etc. But if you just want to hop on to a plane to Montreal/Quebec and roam around, this tour guide is not for you.

Customer Reviews:
Romantic.......2005-07-05
I just LOVED reading about Jen Yu and Dark Cloud! It's great when they had a duel and fell in love. Compared to the part about them, the stuff about Yu Shen, Mu Bai, and all the other characters were boring. I highly recommend this book, except when Jen Yu and Dark Cloud are in the cave...ew. But anyway, it's a cool book with beautiful illustrations.
crouching tiger hidden dragon #5.......2004-11-25
This book was totally cool. I loved it when the book got to show Jen Yu as a girl and show her as an adult. I loved the drawings which are SO detailed. But I didn't really like the ending where this bandit wanted a match with Jen Yu because I wanted to read more!

Book Description
A collection of the best and most recent thinking on marketing and branding
Breaking compromises refers to getting beyond the "either/or" scenario customers face, e.g.: If I want to pay less for this product, I'll have to sacrifice quality. Innovative companies expose—or "break"—these compromises and recalibrate the equations between customer and product. Breaking Compromises discloses the most innovative thinking on retailing, including customer retention, branding, e-commerce, global markets, and staying ahead of the competition. This groundbreaking compilation features a collection of never-before-published short essays as well as recent articles that, until now, have only been made available to BCG clients.
Michael Silverstein (Chicago, IL) is Senior Vice President and head of the Consumer and Retail practice area of The Boston Consulting Group.
George Stalk Jr. (Toronto, Canada) is a Senior Vice President with The Boston Consulting Group, head of BCG's innovation and marketing initiatives, and comanager of BCG's Toronto office.
Customer Reviews:
Lots of Valuable Best Practices and Mini Case Histories!.......2001-06-03
The essays in this book were originally published over the last 10 years and present many coordinated perspectives on key consumer issues. In some consumer products and service companies, the functional silos argue over what to do and reach internal compromises that ignore providing customers, purchasers, and consumers with what they want. You would have to work in a dozen companies over a number of years to capture all of the useful observations in these essays. I found the work to be solid except for an emphasis on overly coordinating brand activities within a sector, and perhaps a little too much of a focus on the financial value of all this.
The sections cover Operating Efficiency, Retailing, Marketing and Selling, the Consumer, the Brand, E-Commerce, Global Markets, and Staying Ahead. I thought that the best sections were the first four.
My favorite essays were:
Don't Get Trapped in the Skills Gap;
Make in a Week What You Sell in a Week;
Price by Design;
The Power of Direct Store Delivery;
Inner Cities Are the Next Retailing Frontier;
Levels of the Game in Frequency Marketing;
The Research Advantage;
Winning a Segment-of-One at a Time;
Customer Retention;
One Size Doesn't Fit All;
Total Brand Management;
Winning on the Net;
Meeting the Local Challenge in China;
The Paradox of Success.
Whenever we address basic consumer issues, we should all be sure to remember the bad experiences we have every day: The line that doesn't move for 15 minutes; the person who cannot help you; the endless telephone menus; on-line help menus that don't help; and out of stocks. And that's before we get to rude and annoying service. It is easy to forget how bad things are. I recently went to a seminar where the panelists discussed how they spent their time waiting for slow Web pages to load.
If you are in a consumer products or services company, at least one of these essays will immediately improve your business. Only you will know which one!
Go beyond hitting budgets to building purchases and experiences that consumers look forward to!
Thought provoking and solid.......2000-01-18
A collection of papers from the Boston Consulting Group from the past four years. They have not dated which is nice.
Occasionally reads a little like a BCG presentation so can be a bit dry - but the CONTENT is great.
Has chapters of related material ie. REAL brand management for the 21st century; dealing with e-commerce effectively and strategically without wasting money.
Nice big picture stuff but with meat - you could actually use the material to kick start some thinking in your company.
Good stuff!

The integration of the European Union may well be a worthwhile enterprise bringing many economic and social advantages, but integration faces many obstacles, from attachment to nationalism to opposition to a federal governmental system. Feld examines how the European Union countries arrived at their current situation and the prospects for further strengthening of ties. Feld contends that, given appropriate leadership in some EU member states, more and more citizens may begin to realize the advantages that flow from an effective combined effort, including a common currency capable of bringing extensive economic and social benefits to the EU population. As Feld maintains, the shape of future developments will depend on the number of added EU members and their economic and sociological histories. A work of value to students and researchers involved with the political and economic integration of Europe.

Book Description
This is the only book by Cleve Backster himself, describing 36 years of research in biocommunication, observed electrical responses in plant life and other living organisms. All life forms have the capability of responding to one another, from plants and bacteria to foods and animal cells. Most amazing is his work with human leukocytes. These discoveries have opened up a new paradigm in science, ecology and healing.

We're All Connected ..........2005-08-15
I have heard of the work of Cleve Backster in many different places over the years, heard a few radio interviews with him (Art Bell, Jeff Rense, Whitley Streiber, George Noory) and finally, he's written a book explaining it all.
His work does seem to confirm the work of others (who are, to be sure, "newbies" compared to Mr. Backster), such as Lynn McTaggart, as well as some of the late night assertions of Whitley Streiber's strange visitor discussed in his book, "The Key," as well as the Chinese and Japanese concepts of chi and ki, respectively -- or "The Force" to those of us in the Star Wars generation, which apparently borrows liberally from the concepts of chi/ki (see Glen St. John Barclay's excellent book, "Mind Over Matter: Beyond the Bounds of Nature" for a most interesting read as well).
Lots of interesting data in Mr. Backster's book ... quite an ideal method to interest a young mind in the field of science, I'd bet.
This book is a must-have.
Enhanced research of Sir J.C. Bose of India.......2004-10-04
I am impressed with the details of the research this author has done.

I've read the book and the information is amazing. Backster never claims "proof" - but does use controls. Here is an excerpt from a fact sheet available on his website:
See Primary Perception Chapter Four pages 64-70
Failures to Replicate
CB: The AAAS symposium presentations by John Kmetz and Arthur Gasteiger revealed problems in their approach. They made it obvious that they were not following proper automation procedures. The plants were in a holding room seven days in advance of their intended use. They then bathed the leaves with distilled water. Any kind of experimenter contact with the plants prior to the actual experiment usage can compromise the experiment by allowing prior attunement between the plant and the researcher rather than the more subtle stimulus provided by the death of the brine shrimp.
John Kmetz had visited my New York City lab in October, 1973, and had ample opportunity to personally observe spontaneous events of biocommunication. Upon his return to San Antonio, rather than to work out the problems involved in total automation and to eliminate human consciousness from his attempted replication of the plant-brine shrimp experiment, it appears that he found information concerning his then current failure in demand. He was invited as a participant at the 1975 AAAS symposium mentioned earlier. Rather than constructively pursuing biocommunication research, which I believe was the original function of the Science Unlimited Research Foundation, Kmetz apparently chose to capitalize on his failure to replicate.
Skepdic: "Backster clearly does not understand why scientists use controls in causal studies."
Anyone who has read either of Backster's published reports knows the opposite is true. Biocommunication observations do not fit into the Scientific Method because they demand spontaneity in order to be authentic. He has always taken a great deal of time and trouble to demonstrate that these recorded responses are not caused by "spurious electric signals within Backster's electronic equipment, amplified and recorded by a system not shielded for such spurious signals."
As Cleve says, You should not be down on what you are not up on.
I say you should read a book before you try to review it! In this case, pass the information of Primary Perception on to the next generation.

fair warning
before you spend your money read at

a one paragraph quote from a long article follows
Backster's claims were refuted by Horowitz, Lewis, and Gasteiger (1975) and Kmetz (1977). Kmetz summarized the case against Backster in an article for the Skeptical Inquirer in 1978. Backster had not used proper controls in doing his study. When controls were used, no detection of plant reaction to thoughts or threats could be found. These researchers found that the cause of the polygraph contours could have been due to a number of factors, including static electricity, movement in the room, changes in humidity, etc.

Book Description.......2004-03-27
Backster's tireless years of research in the laboratory have resulted in a giant leap forward to prove scientifically what others have only conjectured about the nature of consciousness.
Backster's work offers demonstrable proof of a subtle, yet real, mind/body communication--the concept that captured the public's attention when Norman Cousins published many years ago his famous account of the role of laughter in the cure of his near-fatal illness.
Primary Perception details Backster's astounding discovery that the cells of our body--even when removed and observed at a distance--somehow receive the "messages" of our thoughts. As science pushes the limits of wireless communication, not so hard to believe!
This book is a must-read for anyone intrigued by the "mind/body connection" and the amazing potential it offers for all of us in this new millenium.
