Book Description
Our knowledge of pollen, the gold dust that carries the male germ line of flowering plants and is vital for sexual reproduction and seed formation, has ‘come of age’ with the publication of this book. Here, for the first time in a single volume, are all the ideas and techniques developed in the last two decades concerning the manipulation of pollen and pollen tubes in plant breeding and biotechnology. Pollen has never been an easy topic to come to grips with, with its variable and often inexplicable terminology that has made it a more difficult field in which to work. This book will remedy that, with its overview of pollen biology and pollen-pistil interactions that explains terms and concepts of the male function of pollen in a way that is readily understandable to the student and professional plant scientist and plant breeder.

Book Description
This proceedings volume contains a collection of papers presented at the International Symposium on Hadrons and Nuclei. Among many specific subjects in this field we chose to discuss (i) interactions of mesons with nucleons and nuclei, (ii) electromagnetic probes of nucleons and nuclei, (iii) strangeness in nuclear physics, (iv) hadrons in nuclear matter, and (v) lattice QCD and other related topics.
Studies of the nucleon-nucleon interactions are extended nowadays to antinucleons, and new experimental and theoretical investigations are presented. Interaction of pions with nucleons, pionic atoms, and aspects of chiral symmetry are discussed by several authors.
New exciting discoveries at several experimental facilities such as Spring-8 and KEK in Japan, HERA and SIS in Germany, and CEBAF and RHIC in the US are presented.

appreciated this book.......2003-01-01
i did not realize that this book would contain such a wealth of information. the title is misleading, because the contents include very extensive scholarly research , written in easily understandable and entertaining prose.
You are shown a huge trove of information regarding sharks, the various types, their feeding habits, how they mate, where they travel, where to see them underwater, popular myths, how to fish for them, the dangers and pleasures of diving etc etc
I recommend this book to those who have any curiosity about sharks. You can learn the real facts, and a vast amount of information-in fact, sibly more than you ever wanted to know.
The only thing missing is recipes.

Customer Reviews:
And I thought all Pacific NW skiing was bad!.......2000-12-04
Well, Mr. Criscuolo has proven me wrong. Having growing up skiing other places like Idaho, Utah, and California I thought all skiing up in the Washington area was wet and marginal. I had no idea that there were all these different places to ski in the Seattle area (2 hour drive or less).
There are even more if you want to do some traveling but not make the hike all the way to Sun Valley or get on a plane to make it to Utah, Colorado, or California.
Thanks Mr. Criscuolo This is a resource that I needed to make my winters fun in Seattle!
Great Book.......2000-11-03
Finally, a book about Pacific NW skiing that nails it!
Criscuolo obviously did his research, because the information is dead-on. While the book is meticulously detailed, it is easy to navigate and well-written.
Anyone who's serious about NW skiing & boarding needs to have this book.
You need this book!.......2000-11-03
Santo has done extensive research and this book is excellent! Santo writes very clearly and provides and all the pertinent information you'll need to enjoy any of these Northwest resorts to the fullest. Having grown up in the Northwest and skied many of these mountains, I found myself agreeing completely with what Santo wrote. His descriptions brought the resorts back to life in my memory. I especially like that he chose some out-of-the-way places that haven't been covered in other guide books. Santo gives press to some of the best-kept Northwest secrets, for which I suppose I can forgive him, and I applaud his honest enthusiasm for snow riding. This book makes me excited about the upcoming season and want to ride every single mountain he's reviewed! Get this book. Then get out there and make some turns!

New Zealand author Sherryl Jordan has crafted a riveting story, reminiscent of the work of Thomas Hardy, that's shimmering with the romanticism of a fairy tale but told with the vivid detail and suspense of a modern novel. In an ancient time, a newlywed girl is taken to a seaside thatched cottage by her much older husband. His drunken lovemaking repels her, but Marnie must endure because he is the lord's middle son and she has married him to save her family from starvation. When he is killed in a fall, she feels more release than grief, in spite of the village rumors that she caused his death with a witch's curse. Suspicions grow when she befriends an outcast, a "mad" boy called Raver whose rages and yammerings look to villagers like the work of the devil. But Marnie realizes that the boy is deaf, and his bursts of anger come from his inability to communicate. With the help of the kindly and wise village priest, she begins to invent a sign language for him. A tender love grows between them in the cottage, but Marnie still fears the marriage bed. Meanwhile, the scandalized villagers spy on the "witch," and at last force her to endure the bloodcurdling ordeal of trial by hot iron. Readers will gobble up this entrancing story, and may want to move on to Cynthia Voigt's Jackaroo, Michael Cadnum's In a Dark Wood, and perhaps Thomas Hardy's Tess of the D'Urbervilles. (Ages 12 to 15) --Patty Campbell
Book Description
Marnie comes to the remote fishing hamlet of Torcurra as the reluctant bride of Isake Isherwood, a lord of her parents' farm. But two days later, while thatching the roof, Isake falls to his death. Marnie's only kindness comes from Father Brannan, the village priest, and Raver, the strange mad boy whose incoherent cries belie his gentle heart. Taking him in one windy night, Marnie makes a startling discovery: Raver is not mad but deaf.
Determined to communicate with the boy whom Marnie now calls Raven, she invents a system of hand-words. Raven learns quickly and has soon all but shed his madness. Yet while Marnie and Raven forge a deep bond, the villagers, already suspicious of Marnie's role in Isake's death, see his transformation as the result of witchcraft. Even as Marnie's and Raven's bond turns to love, and as they uncover the mysterious value of their cottage, Marnie is forced into a witchcraft trial where the test of the iron bar will determine her fate.
Set in the times when magic was a force to be reckoned with, The Raging Quiet is the epic saga of a remarkable woman whose only crime is being different.
Customer Reviews:
Lovely.......2007-07-10
Well crafted with highly developed characters. The author does not shrink from creating a realistic world, cruel though it may seem.
Raver is the first Deaf character I came across in literature. I would recommend this book to any member of the hearing or Deaf Community because it gives a rich historical background to the injustuces faced by those who are different.
Utterly Romantic.......2007-03-25
Alright all you hopeless romantics out there, this is your book. The pages simply fly by, giving you beautiful descriptions and meaningful dialog. The love story is just beautiful. The two, Marnie and Raven, are so similar. Both misunderstood and outcasts. I found myself caring deeply for the characters, growing closer to them by the page. Suspense winds its way into the book, along with denial, hate, humor, and love. This book has it all. Really.
I was distressed when I heard there was to be no sequal. Oh, dear me. This book deserves a sequal and numerous medals. The characters are loveable and memorable, the action is great, and the romance complete.
I would recommend this book for girls fourteen and up. Although there's not much appauling things in here, it might be too adult for young children. Mainly just the violence and detail of Isake after falling. It's very vivid.
This book is one of my favorites. It's won a spot on my bookshelf where it will stay for many years to come and be remembered forever. I highly recommend.
Teen Girls Beware.......2006-11-27
This book may be fine writing and may have great characters, but I was disappointed to find that in the first few pages, we see a young girl basically experiencing rape at the hands of her new "husband". My daughter is 12 years old, and perhaps the author thinks that 12 year olds are ready for this type of writing. The writing was explicit enough that it made my daughter uncomfortable. Parents, please pre-read this book to make sure that it is appropriate for your teen daughter.
Well Written and Interseting. Two Thumbs Up!.......2006-07-10
This book was fun to read. At first I was hesitant to read it because the description in the book sounded extremely boring, but after reading the first page I was hooked!
The book is about a girl named Marnie who marries a rich lord to keep her family from poverty. They move away from home and live in a broken down cottage that's "supposed" to be worth more than Marnie's husband's manor. Marnie thinks, yeah, right, when she sees it.
Then, Marnie's husband falls to his death while trying to fix the roof and Marnie feels responsible because she was feeling resentful towards her husband and asked god to do something to make him stop wanting her. The village preist assured her that it wasn't her fault, but three old village women overheard what Marnie said and soon everyone thinks that Marnie killed her husband!
Of course, the preist got a man to witness the scene of Marnie's husband lying dead on the floor underneath the broken ceiling, but soon everyone believes that Marnie cast witchcraft on on the poor man to make him fall.
Discouraged, Marnie forms a relationship with the village madman (boy), Raver. His names Raver becauses he throws mindless fits and destroys everything in his path. What the real problem is is that he's deaf and he gets frustrated that he can't understand or talk like other people.
After a brutal whipping from the village Marnie invites Raver, who's name is changed to Raven, to stay with her to sort of protect him. Raven does.
A day later Marnie realizes that Raven his not mad, he's just deaf. So she finds a way to comunicate with him using sign language. Of course, back then they had no idea what sign language was, and when the village people saw this, they took it for more witchcraft.
In Marnie's time witchcraft his deeply feared. They burned witches back then. What will happen to Marnie? Read it to find out!
Really good.......2006-06-28
An amazing novel-it shimmers. I picked it up not expecting much, but this is a really well-written and unusual historical romance with a touch of fairytale and fantasy about it. Marnie, a girl fighting the bonds of her life and the cruelty of the world, is a character who's very easy to empathize with as she denies her slowly growing attraction to Raver, the magnetic, wild deaf boy whom she teaches to speak in sign language. Solid plot and really wonderful ending, vivid and tender descriptions and love story, this simple book about a man and woman persecuted by a village's superstition is one in a hundred. Not everyone will absolutely love it-it is very simplistically written and probably for younger readers-but enjoyable for everyone.

Book Description
On a writing assignment, award-winning author Teresa Jordan spent twelve days traveling down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. As has happened to so many who have visited the Grand Canyon, this intensely verbal woman found herself speechless; she was filled with awe the whole time.
She had brought along a small box of watercolors and stole away from her group each day to paint an illustrated record of her experiences. The results are these field notes from a re-enchantment with the world. She believes the sketchbook was the river's gift to her; in turn she offers the sketchbook to help us find the river for ourselves.
About the experience she later wrote, "I expected the canyon to astonish me. It exceeded my wildest imaginings by at least a power of ten . . . On the river I found myself drunk with visual excitement, engaged in a gluttony of looking . . . Often I would try to recall something I had seen on the river. Other times I would focus on something directly in front of me: a family of barrel cacti in the late afternoon sun, a single cube of zoroaster granite . . .trying to isolate, to understand, the purity of that particular gold of morning light on the ridge, or the muddy claret of the redwall limestone."
The first in a series of Sketchbook Expeditions, Field Notes from the Grand Canyon is the perfect giftfor yourself, or anyone you care about. The paintings are lovely, capturing the canyon's unmistakable luminosity, and the book is produced on special paper with the look and feel of a watercolor sketchbook. This stunning little gem will be a cherished souvenir for anyone who's been down the Colorado River, and an enticement for anyone who has yet to make this life-altering journey.
Customer Reviews:
Teresa Jordan captures the soul of the Canyon.......2000-07-14
This is a beautiful book that not only explores the Canyon through words and watercolors but also our place in the world as human beings. Jordan introduces one to the rythyms of life on the river and shares with us her ability to interpret the daily wonders that make the Grand Canyon so majestic. She has created not just a journal but a moving piece of prose that carries the reader from the widerness of the Canyon to finding meaning in our daily lives. A wonderful journey.

Book Description
This important book offers a revolutionary approach to solving a range of social problems--drug use, smoking, unsafe sex, and overpopulation--by applying marketing techniques and concepts to change behavior. For example, it shows that at-risk teenagers are consumers who decide whether or not to "buy" safe sex practices. This successful approach is based on Alan R. Andreasen's more than twenty years of experience in consulting, teaching, and research with social marketing programs around the world.
Andreasen shows that effective social change starts with a thorough understanding of the needs, wants, and perceptions of the target consumer--who has ultimate control over the outcomes. The book offers a detailed explanation of how to design a step-by-step program that will move the customer from ignorance and indifference to action and ultimately maintenance of that action. Marketing Social Change offers a wealth of information for developing an effective social marketing plan.
Customer Reviews:
Very good basic book on social marketing.......2004-10-10
This book provides a very good overview of social marketing. I use this as a text book in a graduate course that I teach and find it useful in giving students a clear idea of how social marketing relates to the broader topic of nonprofit marketing, without requring them to wade through all of the additional information that a more general marketing textbook would offer. Author Alan Andreason is a leading thinker on the topic of social marketing and has organized this relatively short book in a straightforward manner that makes it easy to separate the preparatory work from the actual execution of social marketing plans.
The one complaint I have about this book, and the reason that I have not awarded it five stars, is that the examples used are less than exciting and I find that I need to supplement this book with additional titles so that my students get the bigger picture of how social marketing principles play out in various cultures around the world, not just in the United States. For those who are looking to expand their understand of social marketing in the developing world and in emerging economies, see also Marketing the Public Sector by Seymour Fine. Sadly, this great book is a bit dated, as it was published in 1992, but balanced with this Andreason book (or a comparable book by Philip Kotler) you will be able to give yourself a solid grasp of the topic.
The definitive book.......2002-07-17
This is the best book to give you grounding in social marketing. It also is a handy reference that you'll go back to again and again. It's well written and very accessible.
Book Description
Economists assume that people make choices based on their preferences and their budget constraints. The preferences and values of others play no role in the standard economic model. This feature has been sharply criticized by other social scientists, who believe that the choices people make are also conditioned by social and cultural forces. Economists, meanwhile, are not satisfied with standard sociological and anthropological concepts and explanations because they are not embedded in a testable, analytic framework.
In this book, Gary Becker and Kevin Murphy provide such a framework by including the social environment along with standard goods and services in their utility functions. These extended utility functions provide a way of analyzing how changes in the social environment affect people's choices and behaviors. More important, they also provide a way of analyzing how the social environment itself is determined by the interactions of individuals.
Using this approach, the authors are able to explain many puzzling phenomena, including patterns of drug use, how love affects marriage patterns, neighborhood segregation, the prices of fine art and other collectibles, the social side of trademarks, the rise and fall of fads and fashions, and the distribution of income and status.
Customer Reviews:
Reads like a textbook -- Advanced knowledge required.......2004-10-20
This book assumes much prior economic knowledge on the part of the reader. If you are looking for an intuitive, digestable text that highlights the relationships between social and market forces... THIS IS NOT IT.
Becker's ideas, though compelling, are often lost in the academic murk of sophisticated formulas and equation analysis. For example, the first three pages of the opening chapter talk extensively about derivatives of utility functions as they relate to social capital. It felt like I was back in calculus or finance class. This book reads like a textbook. I don't recommend it for anyone with less than an intermediate, working understanding of economic theory.
Read this book!.......2002-12-07
Gary S. Becker and Kevin M. Murphy explore the market behavior in a social environment most magnificiently in this book. The insight that I have gained through reading this book cannot be measured by a mere mortal. Furthermore, it astounds me that the sales rank for this book is 72,711, when on my bookshelf it is number 1! This is a must buy for anyone, even if you have no prior knowledge of economics.
Book Description
A surprising number of Jews lived, literally and figuratively, "beyond the Pale" of Jewish Settlement in tsarist Russia during the half-century before the Revolution of 1917. Thanks to the availability of long-closed Russian archives, along with a wide range of other sources, Benjamin Nathans reinterprets the history of the Russian-Jewish encounter.
In the wake of Russia's "Great Reforms," Nathans writes, a policy of selective integration stimulated social and geographic mobility among the empire's Jews. The reaction that culminated, toward the turn of the century, in ethnic restrictions on admission to universities, the professions, and other institutions of civil society reflected broad anxieties that Russians were being placed at a disadvantage in their own empire. Nathans's conclusions about the effects of selective integration and the Russian-Jewish encounter during this formative period will be of great interest to all students of modern Jewish and modern Russian history.
Customer Reviews:
Beyond the Pale.......2007-03-29
I love this book. Benjamin Nathans really captures the thoughts of an average russian man. I know this because im his close friend.
thankyou and good night
Not for Casual Reading; But a Great piece of Scholarship.......2006-08-17
You should know that having been selected a Slavic Studies award it was not going to be all plot and laughs. Though if you read it with the right mindset, some of it looks like it was made-up by Myron Cohen. Probably the most interesting part of the scholarship brought up by Nathans was that once Russian Jews were allowed into law schools, they turned out to be recognized as the most expert in the law.
Anyone who has studied under a talmudic system will know that you must learn not only the law itself, but learn to read between the lines as to it's intent. Even the non-Jewish lawyers admitted that the Jewish lawyers were much more committed to their clients and their clients welfare. Many non-Jews hired Jews as apprentice lawyers because of their attention to detail.
From the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies (AAASS) awards committee:
Benjamin Nathans' masterful study provides a fresh look at an age old problem, the entry and integration of Jews into larger territorial, cultural and political communities. The book takes us, literally and figuratively, "beyond the pale" of Jewish life in late imperial Russia to the encounter of Jewish professionals and intellectuals with Russian civil institutions.
Through exhaustive and innovative research, from newly available archives to private family memoirs, Nathans brings to life key personalities and social interactions that redefine the Jewish presence in St. Petersburg, and in turn reshape ties to the other subjects of the empire and to Russian Jewry. Through these vibrant portraits of the Jewish-Russian encounter, the author paints a much larger canvas tracing a cultural world of understandings and misconceptions, a social existence beset by advances and setbacks, and a political discourse of emancipation and reaction.
Book Prize Winner.......2004-11-20
Beyond the Pale: The Jewish Encounter with Late Imperial Russia won the 2003 Wayne S. Vucinich book prize awarded annually by the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies (AAASS) for the most outstanding monograph in Russian, Eurasian, or East European studies in any discipline of the humanities.
The book prize selection committee wrote the following about this volume:
Benjamin Nathans' masterful study provides a fresh look at an age old problem, the entry and integration of Jews into larger territorial, cultural and political communities. The book takes us, literally and figuratively, "beyond the pale" of Jewish life in late imperial Russia to the encounter of Jewish professionals and intellectuals with Russian civil institutions.

This exemplary, insightful book, argued with balance and nuance and written with flair, provides an original interpretation of a central problem in Russian history and politics. More, the intellectual journey goes well beyond Russia to recast our understanding of broader, ever-present issues of identity, integration, and conflict.
Excellent work.......2003-10-27
This is a fascinating study of the Jews in Russia. The book description is accurate... it is a highly detailed and first rate work of scholarship. The only concern is that it is not casual reading-- it is an in-depth and comprehensive study that rewards the devoted reader.

Book Description
Mr. Apraku gives the reader an outsider's analysis of the good and bad elements that make up the U.S. The author, a Ghanian who has spent the last 18 years studying and teaching in the U.S., brings his personal experiences as an emigre to this examination of American capitalism and democracy. He looks at the strengths and weaknesses inherent in the American democratic system. Many non-Westerners, including Africans, do not know enough about the western democracy of the American economic system they are being asked to adopt as a panacea to their economic, political, and social problems. This book should be especially appealing to scholars in international and economic development, developmental economics, political economics, and African studies.
Book Description
An original portrait of New England's forests, tracing their evolution from precolonial days to the present through a study of the patterns we see today.
Landscape is much more than scenery to be observed or even terrain to be traveled, as this fascinating and many-layered book vividly shows us. Etched into the land is the history of how we have inhabited it, the storms and fires that have shaped it, and its response to these and other changes.
An intrepid sleuth and articulate tutor, Wessels teaches us to read a landscape the way we might solve a mystery. What exactly is the meaning of all those stone walls in the middle of the forest? Why do beech and birch trees have smooth bark when the bark of all other northern species is rough? How do you tell the age of a beaver pond and determine if beavers still live there? Why are pine trees dominant in one patch of forest and maples in another? What happened to the American chestnut? Turn to this book for the answers, and no walk in the woods will ever be the same. 60 black & white illustrations, index.
Customer Reviews:
The woods are lovely..........2007-01-09
Before I read this book, I knew the woods had stories to tell; now, I can begin to understand them. This book is a forensic reference demystifying the clues the forest has to reveal. Each chapter describes, in depth, a particular setting and the clues found there. The drawings, unfortunately, are not as good or helpful as the writing. I would have preferred photographs, but it's only a small drawback.
Reading the Forested landscape..........2006-11-10
...makes more sense after reading this book. The chapters give an introductory look at what you see when you walk through a forest and what it means to the ecosystem and to you if you're just curious or you are in wildlife management.
reading the forested landscape.......2006-08-26
I have grown up in new england and studied the biological sciences for 20 years and Tom Wessel knowledge and wonderful insight to the natural world is amazing. the book is a wonderful read and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys the outdoors and natures beauty.
Read this book and then Read the Landscape!.......2006-01-06
See that tree? - that stone wall? - How about that mound of earth in the woods? Never noticed them before? Well this book will help you to discover all kinds of 'hidden' clues that help us to understand how the land was used in the past and what forces helped to make it the way it is today.
This is a wonderful book to read and then put into practice as you ramble around the wonderful landscapes of New England.
Great book.......2003-08-19
This book provides an excellent introduction to forest ecology. Wessels begins each chapter with an etching that captures a typical feature of northern forest. He then guides us to understanding what one can learn from the etching through asking key questions and making more detailed observations. The book focuses on central New England forests, which he defines as reaching roughly from the Southern half of Vermont to the Northern half of Massachusetts, and stretching eastwards to the coast of Maine. The book will help even beginners understand more about the forests surrounding them, although it helps if readers can at least recognize a beech tree from a maple or a pine before they start. The book is full of so many details that one reading through it is not enough; this is a book to dip into over and over again as one explores the forest. The book includes a number of useful appendices, covering such varied topics as a chronology of New England history, key kinds of evidence to look for in the woods, common woody and non-woody plants, a glossary, and a bibliography.
