    Book Description

"The focus of this guide is to assist you in planning for all the vital factors and imperative considerations essential in enhancing the likelihood of your organization's continuity and survival when impacted by an out-of-course event: planning to prevent disasters, planning to reduce the likelihood of disasters, planning to deal with disasters, and planning to recover after a disaster has affected the organization." — Alan M. Levitt

The only complete, hands-on guide to disaster planning, Disaster Planning and Recovery provides proven strategies, tools, and techniques for helping your company plan for, cope with, and recover from cataclysmic events. Internationally recognized business continuity expert Alan M. Levitt tells you what you need to know to avoid having natural and man-made disasters become business disasters. You'll find out how to:

Earthquakes, floods, fires, tornadoes . . . there isn't much you can do to stop them from happening, but there are steps you can take to prevent natural and man-made disasters from turning into business disasters. And that is what this book is all about: minimizing the damage done to your business by cataclysmic external events.

The only complete, practical guide of its kind, Disaster Planning and Recovery shows facility professionals how to prepare for, cope with, and rebound from a disaster. Alan Levitt clearly demonstrates that the first major step toward minimizing risk and optimizing recovery time following an emergency is to formulate a comprehensive disaster plan. Drawing upon his years of experience as a business continuity expert—and using fascinating and instructive vignettes and case studies (many of them previously unpublished) to illustrate his points—he shows you how to develop the most cost-effective plan possible.

Rather than offer a set of one-size-fits-all checklists and procedures, Levitt supplies a rational framework and proven strategies for formulating a plan tailored to your business. He shows you how to set reasonable goals that will allow you to react more quickly and effectively without losing sight of business outcomes. And he provides the means for researching and conducting the five phases of a comprehensive disaster/recovery plan: identifying potential disasters; quantifying the risk of occurrence; establishing parameters for reducing that risk; forecasting the potential impact a disaster can have on personnel, plant, and business processes; and establishing systems for counterbalancing those impacts.

Throughout Disaster Planning and Recovery, the emphasis is on human factors. Levitt describes techniques for efficiently mobilizing staff in an emergency, working effectively with key departments, such as IT, and most importantly, easing the stress that disasters can impose on staff members. Disaster Planning and Recovery is an indispensable resource for facility professionals, human resources managers, building owners and managers, architects, designers, and planners.

    1 out of 5 stars Find a better book.......2002-08-09

(Note: I had to enter a number of stars for this review. Actually, this book deserves NO STARS!) Unfortunately, I had to purchase this book for a class on private sector issues. This is a horrible book. I do not recommend this book to anyone. The author cannot write. The author cannot communicate. If you have to explain in parenthesis what you just said, face it -- you're not communicating. This book is disorganized, redundant and much of the text unnecessary. The terminology used is cumbersome. But what really concerned me were the grammatical errors. I wonder if Wiley employs any copyeditors! You find sentences like: "Many of this ilk are potential problems are in the realm..." (pg. 119); "If a is plan is in place..." (pg. 122); " ...as low as -- or in the same manner as -- as sprinkler systems..." (277); "The forth domain..." (pg. 283 - shouldn't that be fourth?). There are so many other examples, I don't have space to list them all. Suffice it to say, this book is bad. If you need a book on facility management in a crisis, get it from FEMA and the American Red Cross. Theirs is actually useful.

        Book Description

This conference brought together experts on the manner in which structure emerged from chaos in the early universe. Theoreticians and experimentalists discussed how current and future data can shed light on the manner in which structural constraints were introduced into the early universe and how clues to those constraints can be obtained from the cosmic microwave background, the emergence of the first stars, and the development of galaxies and clusters of galaxies. Almost two dozen invited speakers presented reviews of their areas of expertise. Topics include: The Nature of Dark Matter; The Intergalactic and Intracluster Medium; The Origins of Structure; High-Redshift Structure; Low-Redshift Structure; Future Prospects; Structure in the Cosmic Microwave Background; The First Stars, Reionization, and Induced Structure.

5 out of 5 stars Allenby's unique and honest view on industry&ecology.......2001-01-27

Mr. Allenby is in a unique position concerning Industrial Ecology, he is one of the leading figures of the multinational AT&T. The lawyer, who got his Ph.D. in environmental engineering later in life, takes a critical look at the industry today with 'green glasses' on. He successfully describes the relations between Natural-, Technological-, and Cultural systems, and sustainability in terms of physics, engineering, but most important, in terms of law, economics and social aspects. All of these relations are described in order to create a policy concerning sustainability. He also highlights 'the technological fix', which engineers and company management has: 'You have a problem, no matter how big, we'll fix it, because we can!!' When asking the biggest part of managers in big companies:' Can industry and sustainability coexist?', they all shout:' YES, OF COURSE!!' Allenby actually dares to defy this, and leaves the awnser of this question in the middle, which is more a realistic view on the matter. For an executive of AT&T, this is a darefull attitude. This book looks at the industrial world as it is, with an honest view. However there is one point, which could have been done better in this book. The awnser to the main question is not given. The beginning of the book looks promising, however in the last part; these promises are not met. This book is written in high-standard English, which, for native- and foreign English readers, makes it difficult, but wonderful to read. Therefore this book can be seen as a handbook concerning Industrial Ecology. Definitely five stars!

5 out of 5 stars A very eclectic and enjoyable collection.......2007-08-30

I've read a lot of hockey books and found most of them to be light on substance from either a literary or technical standpoint. This collection, however, captures so many of the nuances and back stories that make the game of hockey so incredibly unique. E.M. Swifts piece titled "A Reminder Of What We Can Be" is my favorite hockey story ever. I was a 15 year old hockey player at the time the United States beat the Soviet Union and I remember following that team in the papers all winter. When the big game was tape delayed, I was so disappointed because I had a game that night and we didn't have a VCR back then. One of the fathers had a B&W television going in the penalty box and although we new the outcome, both teams decided to stop play and huddle around that television to watch the 3rd period. We hugged and high fived as if we had beaten the mighty Russians ourselves. That moment in time was a rare convergence of what is great about life and hockey. E.M. Swift clearly understands the meaning.
"Facing The Shooter" by Wilkinson is a fantastic account of what its really like to play the most stressful position in sports, hockey goaltender.
This book may be a bit difficult for younger readers to get through and grasp, but older fans will appreciate the depth and quality of the writing.

5 out of 5 stars Any true hockey fan will relish this special book.......2007-03-22

Reviewed by Beverly Pechin for Reader Views (2/07)

Being an avid hockey fan I wasn't too expectant upon reading "short stories" about the great moments in hockey and being surprised by what they had to say. Imagine my delight when I found not only interesting and completely out of the ordinary tales of some of the most memorable moments in hockey, right before my eyes, but stories told that I knew with inside looks that make them seem completely different than any other I've read.

"The Greatest Hockey Stories Ever Told" is a wonderful compilation of stories regarding the greatest game on ice, hockey. With everything from "The Miracle Team" from a perspective you probably have never heard before to "A Portrait of The Great One," Wayne Gretzky, you will find each story with its own form and style, told like no other. With so many authors contributing to the book, there is an infinite amount of perspectives that you probably have never seen before on the game. Hockey greats like Toe Blake, Wayne Gretzky, and the infamous Montreal Canadiens and their years of reign are all topics of conversation in this great book of hockey stories and memories.

The style and content are so unique to any other hockey book I've ever read that I am somewhat speechless as to how to compare it to anything else. Loaded with stories, insider's views, coaches' memories, team moments and so much more, any true hockey fan will relish this special book and all its content. The ability to read a story and put it down to come back to later makes it a great book to simply keep around to get your "hockey fix," especially out of season! So after the Cup Craze is over, pull up a seat and enjoy an inside look at the real life stories of hockey and all of its glorious moments. Even the most well-versed and trivia filled amongst us will find an inside look at this great life on and off the ice in "The Greatest Hockey Stories Ever Told."

5 out of 5 stars Wide variety of stories.......2006-04-13

This mini-anthology has a wide range of hockey stories from one written by the American, Pulitzer-winning author William Faulkner (this story was junk, though well written if you like Faulkner) to life on the road as a minor league player hoping to be called up (poignantly and rawly written like the life itself), to a homily to Toe Blake, to a portrait of The Great One (Gretzky) by Peter Gzowski, to how to make your own backyard rink.

The quality of writing is generally very good and virtually every story offers an interesting perspective on the game. Stories are short so you can read one on the subway or before you go to bed at night. All in all, a decent hard cover to have on your bookshelf.

This is my second water-resistant Lonely Planet map, and I'm very disappointed with it. The color contrast is too pale, and the printing is too small. I won't use it for my trip, opting instead for a free map from AAA which is very good. Don't waste your money on this one.

5 out of 5 stars This was the only map I needed.......2000-07-01

This was the only map I took on my last trip to Washington, and it was all I needed. It was most helpful simply because it showed where all of the major sites are, and it had a separate map which focused on and around the Mall. Unlike most maps this one is durable and waterproof (luckily because it happened to rain one of the days I was there). This map was extremely helpful in every way. All I can possibly tell any prospective buyers is BUY IT! (And it's so inexpensive, too!)

          Book Description

Seldom considered is whether markets do an adequate job of shaping our tastes. David George argues that they do not, and that the standard economic definition of efficiency can be used to demonstrate that the market ignores people's desires about their desires. He concludes that markets perform poorly with respect to second-order preferences, thus worsening the problem of undesired desires. The book further investigates changes in perceptions and public policy toward such activities as gambling, credit, entertainment, and sexual behavior.
David George is Chair and Professor Economics, LaSalle University.

          4 out of 5 stars excellent.......2001-12-04

As a student of Dr. George's, I know about the many years of work that Dr. George has put into this piece of economic literature. I believe that, as a result of those years of labor this book provides sufficent evidence of this. This book is a must read for anyone who is interested in consumer choice, or economics in general, as it provides a new view of our preferences.
