Great Photographic History Of The Doors.......2000-01-14

The Doors is basically the same as all the other Bison Group books that I have. Mainly filled with great pictures and a little history. This one was a great gift from my Aunt. It even comes with a poster.

The Doors personify the image of 'Rock Gods'. To me, they are basically one of the first groups ever to be so dang cool.

This is one of the most useful, practical, and understandable mechanical and electrical information sources on the planet! I have a couple of professional degrees and I still learned PLENTY from this book. Don't learn the hard way read this book! This should be required reading for all the girls and boys in the college of engineering. That way they would be comfortable to operate in the field making everyday practical decisions.

My husband and I just bought a vintage steel-hulled Abeking & Rassmussen classic cutter-rigged boat. We are restoring, re-wiring, reconnecting plumbing, refinishing the interior, etc. This reference book is by my husband's side throughout the process. It has been on-target in every aspect. We will be acquiring more Nigel Calder titles, I am certain.

The Korean Experience........2005-02-06

I read the paperback version of this book. It was written in simple text but yet it was very compelling. Being adopted from Korea, I thought at some points in life that living with Korean parents would be better. But after reading this book,I realized, at least I didn't have the cultural differences to go along with being a person of color.
I would recommend this book for other kids/adults that were adopted from Korea. Because it gives you insight on the way we might have grown up if we were living with our natural parents. And it fills in some of those missing blanks that all of us have.

A wonderful story........2004-07-01

One of Jin-Han Park's first memories is of the time he lost a hat that his mother had knitted for him. The wind carried it off and somehow, though he has worn many hats since then, he remembers that particular one best of all. Perhaps it is because his mother can no longer knit him a new hat.

We follow Jin-Han's memories from the time he lost his hat to when he lost his mother. These two points of reference are tied together for Jin-Han, connected forever in his heart. But there are some wonderful stories that lie between them. We can enjoy hearing about class photograph day when Jin-Han was in kindergarten, his first kiss, what it was like to become a big brother, and the many other times he shared with his family and friends.

Author John Son has created a collection of stories that will make you smile. It will also make you stop and think about the life of immigrants and the many hardships they have to face. There are so many things that need to be learned and understood. Jin-Han and his family undoubtedly must have felt isolated at times, like a small island in the vast sea of American life. We also see how the second generation can become separated from the first. Jin-Han wants to be as American as his friends are, while his parents still hold on to the Korean ways. As we watch Jin-Han grow up, we can see the divide between the parents and the boy widen; it is both interesting and sad to watch.

John Son involves us in the life of his Korean family and proves he can tell a wonderful story.

Son's debut novel, an entry in the First Person Fiction series, is a tender quasi-memoir detailing his childhood in a Korean immigrant family, trying to find his place in a new and unfamiliar world. Jin-Han's father is in love with American opportunity and is determined to own his own business. He purchases a wig shop, which takes them from Chicago to Memphis to Houston, where they are at last successful. Along the way, Jin-Han experiences the usual pains of adolescence fitting in, understanding the opposite sex but with the added challenge of an unusual name, language and appearance. Son's language is at times startling with its simple elegance: Jin-Han's first kiss makes his insides feel "like a beehive on a warm, sunny afternoon," and his depiction of a dance party at a friend's house, in which the kids keep playing the same slow dance over and over, captures the essence of sweet teenage romanticism. The family dynamic is strong; Jin-Han's parents emerge as robust and complex individuals. Jin-Han ultimately emerges as his own man, a product of his family ties but not prisoner to them. The book liberally uses Korean words and phrases Jin-Han's mother is his Uhmmah, his father his Ahpbah and includes a brief glossary, which adds another pinch of flavor to an already inviting and warm story. Moving first novel.......2003-10-21

In this memoir-ish novel of growing up in the 70s and 80s, Jin-Han's parents are Korean immigrants to the USA who make a living by running a wig shop with a predominantly Black clientele. While this entry into American capitalism was not atypical for immigrant Korean families, it is an atypical lifestyle for a child becoming an American teenager. Jin-Han's story is told at the point where these several worlds meet, and it is an engaging and moving story. Perfect for young adults and general readers. I found it to be a superior book. I really loved it.

Despite the increasing occurrence of consumer boycotts, little has been written about this form of social and economic protest. This timely volume fills the knowledge gap by examining boycotts both historically and currently. Drawing on both published and unpublished material as well as personal interviews with boycott groups and their targets, Monroe Friedman discusses different types of boycotts-from their historical focus on labor and economic concerns to the more recent inclusion of issues such as minority rights, animal welfare, and environmental protection. He also documents the shift in strategic emphasis from the marketplace (cutting consumer sales) to the media (securing news coverage to air criticism of a targeted firm). In turn, these changes in boycott substance and style offer insights into larger upheavals in the social and economic fabric of 20th century America.

Academic Study of Boycotts.......2005-09-24

This book approaches consumer boycotts from an academic perspective. Meaning that it is not the easiest of reads and it is definitely not a "how-to" book. On the other hand it should be helpful to those interested in looking at different strategic approaches to be used in different situations. I think my two biggest complaints are that there are not summaries of each chapter and that the history of boycotts is attached at the end of the book.

I teach Business Administration at the University of Southern Mississippi and was interested in the how-to's of boycotts. While the internet is filled with pages on how-to organize boycotts there is precious little info on what makes for EFFECTIVE boycotts. One Size does NOT Fit All!

This book fills that gap by providing stories of past boycotts, how they were organized, and describing their effectiveness. My favorite story in Friedman's book was of Rev. Don Wildmon's attempts to clean up television programming and how he backed into an extremely effective method of keeping the targets of the boycott a secret (be advised this only worked because of the size of his operation and some unusual factors that he was not in control of). Wildmon's response to the TV networks claims of "censorship" is the basis for all consumer boycotts in a free society.

From a lay reader perspective, I would recommend that any reader avoid reading the book in order. Rather, read the book's first chapter (definitions), second chapter (factors affecting success), last chapter (historical perspective on tactics) and then the rest of the book or the parts that you feel are most applicable to your situation.

I also recommend reading each chapter and then making a summary of what you learned (on index cards would probably be best) so that you don't have to re-read the entire book at a later date looking for the parts that are interesting to you.

It may seem that I am nit-picking this book to death, but Forewarned is Fore-armed. Aside from the drawbacks I have described, there aren't many other choices for those considering boycotts to consult that have the breadth of Friedman's book. It is an important contribution to the study of various types of consumer boycotts and their effectiveness and will likely be the standard text on the subject for at least a decade.

Colin Fletcher is a self-described "compulsive walker." It is not unusual for him to pick up a map, drive to an area that intrigues him, and then start walking. It should come as no surprise then that a detour from U.S. 66 to visit the Grand Canyon on a June morning in 1963 inspired Fletcher to walk the length of the Canyon below the rim. In The Man Who Walked Through Time Fletcher recounts his amazing journey. For two months Fletcher struggled against heat and cold, lack of water and dwindling supplies. A wonderful adventure story about a solo hiker/thinker........2007-04-03

Colon Fletcher is a well known backpacker who has written the bible on backpacking (The Complete Walker IV; Alfred A Knopf, New York). On this trip he talks about the planning and preparation for the trip and all the details of the execution of the adventure. He explains the natural history and the geological history of The Grand Canyon at length as he walks the length of it. He may be the first non-native man to do so. Mostly, Fletcher has a honest, smooth, enjoyable style of writing that I find enchanting.
The appendix contains a list of everything he took.
With a little philosophy, a little geology and a story of personal struggle with the task at hand Fletcher conveys something of a understanding of humankind's place in the world. One can ask for nothing more than that!

Had a deep effect on me.......2007-02-19

I read this book in my early 20s, about 40 years ago. I had recently discovered the study of geology, and had camped on the rim of the Grand Canyon several times and hiked the Bright Angel Trail twice. The book had a profound effect on me then, and moved me again when I re-read it recently. This is the record of a man's journey -- physical, psychological and spiritual -- vividly and poetically written. He not only traces his trail through the canyon, but the personal challenges he meets and overcomes on the way, and perhaps more importantly, his gradually deepening experience of the canyon itself, of feeling himself an integral part of it, at one with its immense mystery. In that way, it is a deeply mystical story, as well.

For people who read this book and enjoy it, I'd also recommend Colin Fletcher's more recent book, RIVER, his account of a much more recent trip floating the Colorado River from its source to the sea. Particularly more mature readers will find his identification with the river in its various stages, and the stages of his own life, engrossing.

A VERY INTERESTING AND INSPIRATIONAL READ.......2006-01-05

This well written volume is the story of one man and one trip. I suppose if I took the same journey, my motivation might be quite different and my story, I am sure, would be different. I think you kind of have to take this book as just that, i.e. one mans quest, one mans vision and one mans interpretation of what he saw and what he expierenced. I personally felt inspired by this work and felt as if I were reading the words of a kindred spirit. On the other hand, according to my friends and family, I am a bit of a flake, so take this review for what it is worth. Granted, Fletcher did have good support, but then I don't think he had a particular death wish either. If I could afford it, I would do the same. I do regrete that, as one reviewer pointed out, that the hype for the book could be a bit misleading to the reader. I suppose those that like living on the very edge might find this work a bit prosaic in that no death defying feats were performed, yet I really don't feel that is what this work was all about. I suggest just reading and enjoying it.

Amazing True Adventure.......2005-01-01

This book suceeds on every level and is one of the best adventure books I've read. Much more than a hiking guide, it is an amazingly well-written of a journey more mental than physical, as Colin shares deep insights into life, geology and the history of the Earth as revealed by the Grand Canyon.

Backpackers will appreciate his accurate portrayals of hiking: the mixed emotions before setting of on a long and possible perilous journey, the still moments feeling at one with Nature, the way everyday minutia and worry eventually recedes into the background. If you have friends who want to know what backcountry hiking is all about (without actually going on one), this is the book to read.

Also, for Canyon afficionados (such as myself), Fletcher's book captures the majesty, awe, and grandeur of America's (or at least Arizona's) crown jewel.

Although written in the 1960's, this account does not feel dated. It is very much more than a 'been-there, done-that' journal of a record-setting performance, but instead has much to offer to any reader. Highly recommended.

The book, "The Man Who Walked Through time" by Colin Fletcher is an amazing book about how Colin Fletcher himself attempts to be the first person to walk the length of the canyon. Colin Fletcher really goes into detail about what he was thinking and feeling along the way. Not to say that he never talks about what he actually does, he just includes more about what his mindset was. You would think that a book about a man and his journey's would start out as the boring day 1, day 2, day 3 and day 4, then day 5, but Colin Fletcher throws away this idea and beautify pieces together a flowing natural story. He never bores you with every single detail, but instead talks about the most exiting things. The book "The Man Who Walked Though Time" is meant for any reader interested in the canyon or anyone that would want to follow in Colin's footsteps.

I myself live at the canyon, and when reading about how Colin Fletcher walked the length of the canyons National Park I was awe struck. Later I was relieved to find out that the Grand Canyon National Park boundary was a lot shorter. It was also nerve racking to thinks of how he is going to lug his food around for 3 months, but I was soon to read that he was going to have airplanes drop his food off at certain locations. "That's crazy" I though, "you would have to spend millions of dollars to be able to do that". That is when I learned that Colin Fletcher had walked that canyon in the 60's and back then it must have been inexpensive to have an airplane drop off your food or you had connections.

While I was reading the book, Colin Fletcher was talking about the Rhythm of the rocks and how he needed to connect with the beaver, and "be the beaver" and be one with all of the animals. I literally thought that he was going crazy, that he has been in the canyon way to long and has gone nuts, but then I started to realize what type of mindset he is in. He has been alone for so long in such a beautiful and amazing place. When I start to think about what Colin Fletcher was saying about the rhythm of the rocks and how our time and the canyons time is way different I really admired the way Colin put his thoughts together. It was just beautiful writing, that is all there is to it.

I personally thought that the book was amazingly well written, and like I had said before, the way Colin doesn't use the writing format of what he did every single day. He just points out the main facts about his journey.

The book really inspired me to just go out and walk the Grand Canyons length myself. Since Colin explained that he wasn't the fittest guy in the world it really showed that if you worked hard enough you yourself could walk the Grand Canyon. I can't think of anything that Colin Fletcher left out in his book. I mean sure he left out all the little details, which is good otherwise it would have been horribly slow and dreadful. I have never really read any other books about the canyon so I don't have anything to compare this book to. Don't worry though; I still thought that the book was great.

I have walked in and around the canyon a lot but not for very long periods of time. Colin Fletcher, in the book was talking about how Beaver Sandbar (a place in the canyon) really affected him and moved him. I thought that to be a little odd, but since I wasn't walking in his shoes I pass to much judgment. Other that that little oddity the book "The Man Who Walked Through Time" was brilliant. Go read it!
