4 out of 5 stars A useful book to have!.......2004-07-29

"Leadership and Talent in Asia" by Mick Bennett and Andrew Bell deals with how leaders in Asia are able to make the most out of their employees in order to become Best Employers. The authors used empirical findings from Hewitt Associates' Best Employers studies to support their arguments. The book is basically divided into three main sections; Leadership and Talent, Engagement and Execution and A Framework for Sustainability. The first section dealt mainly with the importance of leadership in an organization, how it is crucial to have a clarity of purpose for their employees and the importance of getting the right talent and making sure the talent stays with the organization. The second section dealt mostly with having the right culture and engaged employees will create great business results. In the last section, the authors provided some trends that they foresee (such as diversity in the workforce, blurring of work and personal life, etc) and some implications for the organization and HR. Basically, they concluded that being a Best Employer is not an easy or an overnight thing. Leaders need to align business strategies with people strategies and also to make sure employees' needs are taken care of. It also takes a lot of commitment from leaders to ensure employees are engaged with the organization.

This is an easy to read book as the writing is very conversational. There are some HR jargons but I think the authors did a great job explaining them. The content itself is not earth-shaking because what they talked about is nothing new in this field but it is still nevertheless a useful book to have as they are able to support their arguments with Best Employer Studies' results and finding. In addition, I like the fact that the authors were able to illustrate their points with case studies of the Best Employers in Asia.

      Book Description

Scholars and researchers have long believed that the ability to irrigate is crucial to the development of civilizations. In this book, archaeologist Patrick Kirch challenges this "hydraulic hypothesis" and provides a more accurate and detailed account of the role of "wet" and "dry" cultivation systems in the development of complex sociopolitical structures.

Examining research on cultural adaptation and ecology in Western Polynesia and utilizing extensive data from a variety of important South Pacific sites, Kirch not only reveals how particular systems of production developed within the constraints imposed by environmental conditions, but also explores the tension that arises between contrasting productive systems with differential abilities to produce surplus. He shows that the near total neglect of short-fallow dryland cultivation, as well as arboriculture, or tree-cropping, has seriously distorted the picture that archaeologists and anthropologists have of agricultural intensification and its relation to complex social structure.

This work, likely to become a classic, will be central to all future discussions of the ecology and politics of agricultural intensification.

The topic of diffuse astrophysical media ranges over circumstellar to extragalactic scales. The physical conditions in these media can vary from cool, dusty gases to assemblies of relativistic particles. Flows can be set up by momentum and energy injection from radiation fields, winds, jets and explosions. Their observational study involves practically all wavelengths, their theoretical understanding involves physics, chemistry and, inevitably, hydrodynamics. The hydrodynamical aspect of this meeting is particularly emphasised since it was held to mark the retirement of Professor Franz Kahn FRS, who has made many distinguished contributions in this area. The book features invited reviews and contributed papers. After a historical introduction, they progress from circumstellar matter to active galactic nuclei and, throughout, emphasis is placed on the overlap between observation and theory.

            Book Description

Overpopulation, overexploitation of natural resources, overconsumerism, the predictions of environmental experts do not bode well for us. What can we do? In her thought-provoking study, "Redefining Moral Education", Kathryn Wayne explores the role of education in developing a new ecological morality. Using two novels by Ursula Le Guin, "The Word for World Is Forest" (1972) and "Always Coming Home" (1985), Wayne explores how language plays an essential part in our apprehension of the relationship between nature and culture. Wayne analyzes how Le Guin's work relates to recent works by deep ecologists, social ecologists, and ecofeminists, as well as leading influences in moral theory and education - Kohlberg, Gilligan, Rogers, and Noddings - and how Le Guin uses language to highlight cultural behaviors and practices that can be held as an example from which we can redefine morality in terms of our environment. Redefining Moral Education provides a groundbreaking analysis of the relationship between rhetorical and environmental practices, of importance not simply to educators, but to all of us.

            Book Description

Marc Pittman, one of 16 children, is the son of a dirt-poor farmer who remains to this day the only man to even knock Marc unconscious. But when he had a son, Marc became the father he had always wanted to have. When seven-year-old Cole asked him about beer, Marc Pittman put down his can and never drank again. He told his boys everything, and they were honest with him in return. They unburdened their fears; told him their dreams; and even admitted their sins. Despite the fact that his sons were star football players, they felt no shame in holding their father's hand in public. People told him he was lucky to have the relationship he did with his children, but Marc Pittman knew the truth-it wasn't luck, he worked at it every day. And then his eldest son, Cole, was killed in a traffic accident on the way to football practice at the University of Texas. This book is the story not just of how Marc Pittman dealt with this tragedy, but of the 21 years he lived with Cole and the lessons he learned about being a good father, a good friend, and a good man.

            5 out of 5 stars Raising Cole.......2007-09-11

This book is a must read for everyone because it is so moving. The story that Marc Pittman tells is one that will change you for the rest of your life. The bond that a father and son have is special and the bond that Marc and his two sons have will make you look in the mirror and think about the relationship you might have with your father. I encourage people to read this book and for them to get their friends to read it.

            5 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2007-07-12

One of the most amazing stories I have ever read. Pittman captures his relationship with his children in stunning detail, while allowing the reader to visualize how this could affect their own relationships. I highly recommend reading this great and inspirational book.

I finished your book this past week while on spring break with my kids and sister in law who had lost her husband to suicide. She frets everyday over raising her two sons without a daddy. I wanted to finish the book before we left each other at the end of the week so she would be able to take it home with her and read it. I had told her there were so many good things in the book about raising kids and relationships... I ended up reading the last six chapters aloud to her on our drive home. My 12 year old son, crawled up in the back seat and listened to the story again. He has read the book twice already. We cried thru most of your story relating to ours and the grief that you experience when losing a loved one. It was healing for us in relation to our own loss. I pray that time has eased your grief some although I realize it never ends.

I also googled Chase and found what a successful young man he is turning out to be at LSU. Congratulations on what wonderful children you have raised... What a proud moment in a parent's life. Now you get a chance to spoil your granddaughter and send her back to mom to do the tough part... That is what my parents tell me. I am sure Payton has you wrapped around her little finger.

What a difference your book will begin to make in my relationships
with my husband and sons. I have ordered copies to give others who are in my life.

Bless you for the courage to write so that you could minister to others.

My husband read this book a little over a year ago, when we found out we were pregnant with our first child. Our lives have not been the same since. This book has made a positive impact on our lives and the relationship we want to have with our children and family.

After being blessed with the birth of our first son and reading your book, we now understand the importance of church, family and God. We are now members of a church and attend every Sunday.

We are expecting our second son in July. We are going to name him Cole, in honor of your son and as a reminder of how important God and family are. We can't wait to have our own Love Wars and my husband can't wait for his first Dead Man's Talk.

Thank you for sharing your wonderful and inspiring story!

              1 out of 5 stars Yawn..........2005-07-10

This is a boring, uninteresting, plotless book. I do not understand how someone could like a book that does not have a plot. I mean, you can't even tell what the book is about! If someone asked me, "what is The Silver Pencil about?" my best answer would probably be,"it's about a girl who does stuff". This is modern art in book form. Do not waste your money like I did.

1 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK IS AWFULL!!!!.......2005-07-05

What has possessed you people? How could you possibly rate this piece of trash 5 stars? This book has no plot. Everyone in my class read this book in literature class (not in one day, of course) and everyone HATED it! When we got a writing assignment about the book, almost nobody did well because you can't even tell what the freakin' book is about! Alice Dalgliesh is now hated by everyone in the 5th grade class in my school. She should be arrested for writing a book like this. I'm glad that the school wasted their money on the book, not me. Do not buy this book. You will regret it if you do.

5 out of 5 stars The Silver Pencil.......2002-10-09

The book was given to me by my cousin, Haley. I needed to do a book report on a book for school and I came across it. So I did it for a book report. I thought it was a wonderful book and very exciting to see what might happen next.

Janet is the main character and lives in Trinidad but then she moves to England. Her father gives her a silver pencil for Christmas. After Christmas, her father dies. She was very sad. She came to America to attended college to become a kindergarden teacher. She wrote a story with her silver pencil and got it published. She liked to write and wrote many stories.

It was a very interesting book and one that one would not want to put down. I recommend this book to teenagers as well as younger children who love to read. It would be an encouragement to anyone who likes to write stories.

5 out of 5 stars A very fascinating book to read........2000-05-15

This book involves a girl named Janet. She expierences a death of her father. She also loves to write. This story based on Janet desciribes how her life begins at age nine reading the book Little Women ending older as being a teacher reading the same book, but with a whole different prespective. This book of my opinion is a wonderful book for all ages wanting to have a good book in there hands.

5 out of 5 stars I read this book and it is a great book!.......1999-10-29

This book is a great book. It deals with a lot of good situations. The little girl is an extremly good writer. Book Description

Sustainable development has been approached from many viewpoints over the past 15 years without a concise or precise definition of what sustainable development really stands for. James has solicited contributions from an international group of experts who write about aspects of sustainable development from many different disciplines. Their consensus is that sustainability depends upon concerted development across the spectrum of socioeconomic factors that affect the environment, natural resources, health, education, and welfare of the populations in the emerging nations. The necessity of incorporating indigenous knowledge with technological and international expertise has become crucial.
