        Book Description

This report examines the state of knowledge and the future promise of guayule Parthenium argentatum Gray, a little known shrub native to the desert of southwest Texas and northern Mexico that was a commercial source of natural rubber during the first half of this century.

This perennial shrub thrives in arid conditions and can survive heavy frosts. Guayule, after thorough drying, has been found to contain as much as 26% rubber. This rubber can be used to make vehicle tires or any other item currently made with natural rubber. It is a promising plant for use in reforestation of desert fringe lands and is easy to grow. Extraction of the rubber is not technically difficult; in fact, small-scale household extraction is possible. The plant can be cut down to the ground and will grow again from the roots.

The book covers: background and history, botanical information, rubber extraction, agricultural production, rubber quality, economics, research needs, selected readings and recommendations.

When guayule grows actively, it produces little or no rubber. If the plant is stressed, growth slows and the products from photosynthesis are diverted into rubber production. Thus when growth slows during cold weather or because of reduced moisture supply, the rubber content begins to increase.

            Book Description

The rapid growth of the discipline of aquatic ecology has been driven both by scientific interest in the complexities of aquatic ecosystems and by their enormous environmental importance and sensitivity. This book focuses on the remarkably diverse roles played by underwater plants, and is divided into three parts: 10 thematic chapters, followed by 18 case studies, and rounded off by three integrative chapters. The topics range from macrophytes as fish food to macrophytes as mollusc and microbe habitat, making this of interest to aquatic ecologists as well as limnologists, ecosystem ecologists, microbial ecologists, fish biologists, and environmental managers.

To really know someone, as the saying goes, you must walk a mile in their shoes. But to really understand a golfer, you've got to work as their caddy. Sports Illustrated columnist Rick Reilly managed to get some very intriguing golfers to let him lug their bag and write what he learned both about the game and the folks who play it. Going hole to hole with them let Reilly know a different side of veterans such as John Daly, David Duval, Tom Lehman, and Jack Nicklaus. But Reilly also went beyond the pros to caddy for Deepak Chopra, Donald Trump, professional gambler Dewey Tomko, and Bob Newhart. In some cases, the portraits that emerge fall directly in line with the popular image but at other times it's just the opposite. Daly is sober but has shifted his addiction to massive amounts of Diet Coke, candy, and marriages; Duval is intensely driven during rounds but surprisingly laid back and friendly off the course; Chopra's inner peace is locked in a mortal battle with the inherent frustrations of golf; and Trump manages to be both an egomaniac and a pretty nice fellow. And although he's on assignment to profile his temporary employers, Reilly emerges as an entertaining figure in his own right as he commits numerous faux pas, breaks taboos, infuriates multiple golfers and caddies, accidentally dumps all of Nicklaus's clubs onto the turf in the middle of a round, and discovers that caddying is tougher than it looks. Reilly walks a nice line with the tone of Who's Your Caddy?: it's reverent to the game without becoming a misty-eyed poetic ode, and it's laugh-out-loud funny without being nasty or low brow. And while golf fans will certainly appreciate it, Who's Your Caddy? is an impressive book for fans of biography in general. --John Moe

            Book Description

The funniest and most popular sportswriter in America abandons his desk at Sports Illustrated to caddy for some of the world’s most famous golfers, and some celebrity duffers, recounting it all in this hilarious and revealing look at the world of golf.

Who knows a golfer best? Who’s with them every minute of every round, hears their muttering, knows whether they cheat? Their caddies, of course. So sportswriter Rick Reilly figured that he could learn a lot about the players and their games by caddying, even though he had absolutely no idea how to do it. Amazingly, some of the best golfers in the world—including Jack Nicklaus, David Duval, Tom Lehman, John Daly, Casey
Martin, and Jill McGill—agreed to let Reilly carry their bags at actual PGA and LPGA Tour events. To round out his portrait of the golfing life, Reilly also caddied at the Masters, persuaded Deepak Chopra and Donald Trump to use him as a caddy, accompanied high-rolling golf hustlers in Las Vegas around the course, and carried the bag for a blind golfer.

In Who’s Your Caddy?, Reilly chronicles his experiences in the same inimitable style that makes his back-page column for Sports Illustrated a must-read for more than twenty million people every week. From his laugh-out-loud portrait of Deepak Chopra decomposing on the green, to his portraits of good ol’ boys who bet $100,000 a round, to his hilarious descriptions of his own ineptitude as a caddy, to his insights into what
makes the greats of golf so great, Reilly combines a wicked wit with an expert’s eye in a most original and entertaining look at golf.

Who’s Your Caddy? is the next best thing to a great round of golf. It is sure to delight low-handicappers, high-handicappers, and everyone in between.

            5 out of 5 stars Reilly's Right On.......2007-01-19

This is perhaps the funniest book I've ever read on golf and that's saying something because I read Feherty's work all the time. I enjoyed it so much I bought two more copies for friends and also gave my copy away to a dear friend who taught me about enjoying the game of golf. I enjoyed it so much I read it in two evenings. If you like golf stories and you like to laugh this book is a must.

4 out of 5 stars Want your fix without the greens fees? Reilly does the trick........2006-11-01

I was really pleased with Reilly's effort here. After initially hearing the author shilling the book on Jim Rome back when it was first released on hardcover, I never had much of an inclination to read it. I've found the bits of Reilly's work that I've read in SI often too sentimental and too snarky.

In the meantime I have picked up a fairly serious interest in golf, and when I stumbled across the book again, I thought I would pick it up. "Who's Your Caddy?" won me over and proved that I had been haboring a number of misconceptions.

First, you needn't be a golfer to enjoy the work. There are some moments where Reilly sinks into golf-speak of the kind that I think every weekend player grows tired of by about the second tee when you're out playing with that clown from work or the brother-in-law who's sporting a [...] putter, [...] irons, and a $1 million ego because he's a 4 handicapper. But, the book mostly takes a trip around the course that is accessible to golf novices. Especially when Reilly joins amateurs like Donald Trump (I've always wanted to find a way to plausibly refer to Trump as an amaetur) and Deepak Chopra for a round, the story moves quickly and humorously.

Reilly even convinced me that he isn't the guy I would have thought he had to be after reading his SI work. Like the [...], naked under his raincoat, Reilly can't seem to help himself from unleashing overweight sarcastic sidebars. These inhibit the best parts of the story, but with a self-depricating twist that ususally leaves him as his own target, these diversions actually contained some redeeming moments.

Finally, he does descend into melodrama (the typical golf schlock type stuff, i.e. golf is the great game that challenges your will and quickens your mind and personifies American freedom), but only very rarely, and that restraint rescues the book from what might have become the nonfiction take on Bagger Vance.

Other reviews are right on target, this is not the kind of Updike, Heinz, etc. sports writing that actually captures the humanity and value of sports on paper - its silliness. But, on a summer afternoon when you'd rather save the $250 in greens fees and lost balls, this book should do the trick.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good and Very Funny.......2006-10-19

Even if you are not a golf fan I suggest you read this book. I am only a casual golf fan, and still found this book to be good. Reilly tells his experience with each golfer with a lot of humor and insight on how each one lives, plays the game of golf, and how they deal with certain aspects of the golf world and life itself. You will find yourself laughing out loud during this book (especially during his experience at The Masters). If you like golf, you will love this book! If you don't, you will still find it to be worth your time.

4 out of 5 stars LAUGH OUT LOUD FUNNY!.......2006-08-28

Laugh out loud funny - I own the book and this purchase was for a friend and colleage that appreciates the same dry wit and humor that I do. Rick Reilly strikes again!

                      Book Description

Destination Wellness is the most current and comprehensive source available on the new evolving wellness arena, analyzing four key topics: the consumer, the store, the brand, and the future. This report aids the existing conventional supermarket industry and those businesses newly interested in the health and wellness category in understanding current market dynamics and strategic requirements to maximize wellness shopping in the traditional grocery setting. This is done through an examination of the following topics: Current attitudes and beliefs about wellness products among U.S. consumers. Strategies and tactics retailers and manufacturers may employ to attract and maintain wellness shoppers. Communication strategies to help consumers overcome confusion and inertia - the key inhibitors most shoppers face upon entering the world of wellness. Requirements to make consumers more committed to health and wellness shopping; including what constitutes a wellness shopper, the language used to differentiate "health" from "wellness" and the differences between core and periphery wellness shoppers. Associations and lack thereof held by shoppers of health products in food store settings. Key trends in the wellness market, and who is driving the evolution. Retailers wishing to attract wellness shoppers will need to change some of their prevailing practices. The good news is this does not necessarily require expensive remodels to create a "natural foods" look for a few aisles. Rather, it means understanding where a retailer's current customers are on the health and wellness continuum and where they see themselves going.

                          Book Description

Michael Niemann challenges the traditional manner in which regionalization has been approached and suggests that the failure to come to grips with this phenomenon is the result of the modernist relegation of space to margin of analysis. He advances instead a spatially oriented approach which views states as one of multiple layers of a global social space. Regionalization represents the construction of new layers in an effort to search for an institutional fix to the challenges of globalization.

This book has a lot to offer, even though it is staged outside of the United States. This would be a good book if you were a Boy Scout. The projects and hints would be appealing to that age group. There are good insites into the way nature works and what to look for when out camping or hiking.

5 out of 5 stars Good for natural explorers, young and old, or family.......2007-04-09

The book is interesting. My kids, 4 and 7, and I like to explore the outdoors. The book includes the 5 major classes of vertebrates and most types of invertebrates, and plants. In addition to a lot of information for adult professional naturalists, it also tells you what you can do for fun as an amateur naturalist right in your yard or at home, e.g., put a beautiful spider web on a cardboard, make an ant town, make your own snake stick, make a pitfall trap, etc. Good for homechoolers or any family who like to explore with their kids. That's why the title is "The Amateur Naturalist."

This book is made for a kid.....not a thirtysomething like myself who needs a little more beef. Maybe that's why Amazon offered me the option of writing this review as a 13-year-old. That's who this book is for.

In one lavishly illustrated and well-written volume, Gerald Durrell takes readers on a pocket tour of the infinite variety of the creatures that inhabit planet Earth and at the same time provides a brief tutorial on the methods and importance of simple, hands-on biological research. This is a gift of the first rank for any scientifically-inclined child, and great for adults too.

5 out of 5 stars A marvellous guide for the beginner by the ultimate amateur.......2000-04-17

As readers of 'My Family and Other Animals' will be aware, Gerald Durrell's passion for animals was a constant throughout his life, and his legacy survives in the form of the Jersey Zoo, an institution devoted to the preservation of endangered species. Durrell was also a writer of tremendous charisma and charm, recounting his adventures around the world in a prose that is often unmatched in nature writing.

In 'The Amateur Naturalist', Gerald and wife Lee set out to create the sort of guide for which the much younger Durrell, loose among the wildlife of Corfu, would likely have killed (humanely, though). Broken down by habitats, with coloured illustrations and thoughtful, enjoyable text descriptions, 'The Amateur Naturalist' is a treasure trove for anyone interested in studying the world around them, no matter the part of the world in which they might live. Although you needn't be an actual collector in order to enjoy this book, there is also information on how to begin collecting wild flora and fauna (there is no recommendation, however, on the keeping of snakes in the bath or spiders in matchboxes).

For anyone that knows and loves nature, or would like to know more, this is definitely the book to have.

I found this in my local library and loved it. Now I'm trying to get a copy and I hope this works. I you find nature/biology at all interesting, this is the book for you. If Durrell wasn't my favorite author anyways this would make him my favorite for sure.

5 out of 5 stars If your a young biologist, this book is perfect!.......1999-08-13

In my teen years, I was very interested in biology and the world around me (from insects to birds to fungi). This book gave me inspiration and a basic knowledge of biological collecting and preservation. I am a graduate student in biology now (studying entomology); part of my success comes from having used this book. Thank you, Durrell!

                            5 out of 5 stars A great book!.......1999-06-17

Durrell is a wonderful scientist, an excellent writer and a born philosopher. For anyone who is interested in nature (as everyone should be) you will come to understand it and love it through this book. Great pictures. Let spiders live! It's not out of date and it should not be out of print either!

When I first acquired this book many years ago, I was in awe of the attension to detail Vinson Brown poured into the book. It profoundly affected my ability to observe the world around me. Molecular biology has and is doing great things for humanity, however, it is through patient observation of the natural world we come to understand it. Vinson Brown's other books are very good as well, I would suggest collecting them all before they go out of print or further interest is lost in natural science.

A well written piece, so self explanatory that any novice easily use it. It is loaded with well drawn pictures and charts, and not only deals with subjects such as cloud recognition and rock collecting but how to capture bugs, trap building instructions are included.

It deals with just about every aspect of nature all at a very easy to read level for either the casual stroller to the serious student. So you can gather walk along and enjoy knowing what things are actually learn about a certain plants or animals. This is really fun book I take it along on road trips with my kids and have a blast at the beach collecting pill bugs and burrowing ghost shrimp. Now that I know there names I can tell everyone what they are.

Durrell seems incapable of writing a bad book - his ever-so-lively wittiness and ability to describe different people and animals in a funny way are truly amazing!

So, this is a good book - not quite as breathtaking as his masterpieces ("My Family And Other Animals", "The Garden Of The Gods", "A Zoo In My Luggage" and others), but certainly amusing. Durrell describes, to quote him, "how to shoot an amateur naturalist" - in other words, how nature likes to treat people that try to film it (throw in some human nature and you should have a clear picture). This is one of his books written later than the most popular ones, so he is accompanied by his second wife, Lee, instead of Jackie (whom I'd grown quite fond of).

There's not much more I can tell you if you're familiar with Durrell - because, if you are, you'll probably read this book and all the others as soon as you get your hands on them. That's what a sensible person would do... If you aren't familiar with his works - well, I doubt I'll be able to convince you to read him anyway, but you should - oh! - you should. Just start with his other works, perhaps (the ones I menioned earlier, for example).

A good book. Not excellent, but reasonably good.

MANY projects to try at home using basic supplies, within two weeks of buying the book my three year old and I started all sorts of Science experiments and are now keeping a detailed Nature/ Bird/ Plant journal and have decided to turn the back yard into a Natural Habitat. Well written and easy to understand, even for the newbie like myself.

                                Covers:
                                1.) How to get started

3.)How to keep track of your records

Our next project is to grow our own moss on flower pots from spores. This book made my daughter and I both more aware of nature and the animals around us. Wish I could find more great books like this one for our collection.
